Well, I FINALLY ditched my Heroc and bought a NS4g on sunday and I'm in love (aside from battery life :-/). Now I've been reading up on the Photon and holy crap! HW wise, it's freakin killer.
But...
I'm concerned about not having root for god knows how long (or CM7), the screen not looking as good as the NS and the camera not being as good. Am I being paranoid?
Looking for opinions and info on this.
ZANKS!
It'll probably be rooted release day. As far as CM7, not sure if you've heard of second init but its a way of running aosp over motos locked in kernels/bootloaders. The Droid X and Droid 2 now have CM7 thanks to second init. Its just a matter of whether a Dev takes the time to make it happen. Can't count on moto to unlock it so hacking will be the way.
Spec wise, the photon will be a beast. It has a pentile screen but its still very nice. If you want to get a feel for what the photon will be like, go to best buy and mess with an atrix. Almost same specs.

eh its not all its hyped up to be.. read some stuff about the tegra 2, my buddy has the atrix and its not this crazy super faster dual core
what kind of ram? ddr2?
Thanks for the input folks. Mikeyinid, I was unaware of second init but it sounds promising. IDK, I might just pick it up and try it out for ~2 weeks (I'm only gonna be 2 weeks in to my 30 days when it comes out). Also, I was told by sprint that you can cancel your plan, get a 100% refund and start a new plan to restart the 30 days the same day . So, I am gonna at least give it a shot...
Also, anyone have any suggestions about battery life? I wasn't happy with the batterytweak.sh and juice defender didn't really help that much. Wanted to work on UV but proton caused a reboot and setcpu doesn't have recommended settings.

Motorola has great build quality, but as stated already in this thread the tegra 2 is pretty bad. If you like the nexus, you should consider waiting for the samsung gs2 coming sometime later. (rumored for late August/early September for Sprint. It should have either the exynos could or the Mali gpu, both of which blown away the tegra 2. I'm holding out for that because it fully meets my requirements.
- dual core
- hdmi out
- super amoled plus
- best camera for phone on market
- comes with gingerbread
- (most likely) unlocked on release day.

If we're going to play the waiting game then you might as well wait for the Nexus 3. Dual cores don't mean anything if the phone's software OS isn't optimized to use dual core.
Ice Cream Sandwich + Nexus 3 = ?????????????
Ice Cream Sandwich + Nexus S = ?????????????
Good luck waiting on a carrier/manufacturer for updates. Knowing carriers playing the cat and mouse game with the manufacturers with Samsung. Oh boy you're going to regret it.

I don't see the Nexus Prime coming out anytime soon, seeing as the Nexus S is heading towards AT&T. One can hope, but it just seems like the SGS2 is a better choice purely dependent on the release date. (within the next two months).

^^ THIS.. Never buying a non Nexus phone again. Poor Epic owners were supposed to have Gingerbread months and months ago. To this day they have no official release builds but just constantly get conveniently leaked development builds of Gingerbread instead. The Froyo release for the Epic was ridiculously late by months and months. The snails pace and constant ridiculously long delays of promised updates drove me away from phones that depended on Samsung to update them.

Who ever said Nexus prime? This is all rumors. But it will be guaranteed by later this year during the holiday season there will be a flagship phone for Ice Cream Sandwich by Google.
This is following Google's timeline for when a new Nexus device comes out. It's a fact. It could be,
Nexus Prime
Nexus S2
... and the list goes on.
Who knows? The one thing thats absolute is definitely a new Nexus phone coming out later this year.

I mean don't get me wrong. You have a excellent point about the Samsung Galaxy S2, it looks amazing in terms of hardware. But I think what's really going to cripple it is software updates. Samsung is really good with updates internationally in Europe but I don't know if it's Samsung Mobile USA or if its the carriers. And honestly, I really don't care what the deal is between them two but I want my updates asap.
Nexus One released on January 5,2010.
Nexus S released on December 16, 2010.
Google likes to have a flagship phone for their newest Android OS. It'll most likely be Nexus 3 that gets it first followed by Nexus S and then followed by Nexus One (if it's that lucky but I have good hopes that it will get it.. probably)
And yeah, I know.. people may try and counter me by saying Oh we have CyanogenMod and all that. Well guess what Cyanogenmod can't do. Make a kernel for for that Android X and you're stuck using stock or whatever the deal is. Development will be very limited. And I had a Samsung vibrant and honestly... there are a lot more ROMs for vibrant than Nexus S I'll admit that. But under the hood, they're all the same and mainly built off TouchWiz. That's my interpretation of the Vibrant forums 7 months ago. I don't know how it is today but most of the ROMs are just themed. Nothing is really ever implemented as features.

When I returned the Evo 3D, the store charged me $35 for restocking fee. Later I chatted with a rep online and she told me there's no restocking fee if you are not exchanging the phone but completely returning it.
I emailed Sprint a copy of the restocking fee receipt and $35 was credited to my Sprint account (only reason I had to do that was b/c the store charged my credit card the fee and did not put it on my account).

But I guess the only thing keeping the from releasing another nexus would be Google. Unless Google felt the need to have a larger format dev phone like 4.3" screen, bring back HD video recording and possibly add a dual core processor.

I'm sorry, but anyone who buys a Samsung-supported phone at this point deserves what they will inevitably get.
The Behold II and Galaxy S fiascos should be ample warning: Samsung will NOT support the software on a phone it releases in the USA. The Vibrant 4G will release with Froyo, and will reach end-of-life with Froyo, except for custom ROMS.
Kill TouchWiz already!
Is it really Samsung, or is it Tmobile that delays the updates; or a combination of both?

I like the fact that the new Vibrant Plus has a 1650mAH battery and 4g
This is why you ALWAYS buy phones with the idea that it will be left for dead by the manufacturer as soon as you buy it (unless of course you have a Nexus )
Couldn't imagine how crappy old Vibrant owners who signed 2-year contracts must feel since most people imagine they will have their phone be relevant for at least a year but it's already a "dinosaur" in their eyes in a little less than 6 months

A year is a VERY long time in the smartphone ecosystem, unless you're in a closed system like the iPhone with only yourself to compete with.
I've resigned myself to a new phone every 6 months for as long as I feel compelled to have the "latest, greatest" device.
A lot of Vibrant owners pissed off because of this, but I'm not going to fault Samsung for releasing what's a pretty major upgrade (true HSPA+ and FFC) 6-10 months after the SGS line came out.
Adding SAMOLED Plus would have made it less upsetting to most, I suspect.
I won't give Sammy a pass on the lack of Froyo progress on US model Galaxy S phones, though. They obviously have it (i9000 does, as does this); but is it possible their carrier partners are the problem here?

Seriously?
C'mon, the Vibrant is still "relevant" and anything but a "dinosaur". It's still got one of the best screen technologies out there, a damn good GPU and CPU, 16gb internal and external sd cards, supports 7.2Mbs. Most non-XDA-member types will still love that phone for quite some time to come.
My point in all of this was Samsung denied that they were making a nexus 2 phone up until two weeks before release and dropped that they are making the nexus s; very clever.
Just like there were early rumors of vibrant plus and those were dismissed then at the end of CES it is announced.
So there have been rumors of a nexus s2 and I guess those have been dismissed as well unless they are are going to drop 2 weeks before google's release of "ice cream" a nexus s "plus". Speculative, I know but it fits the MO of Samsung and Google - short ly (apx 6mos.) after the mytouch was made into a dev phone the nexus one was announced with android 2.2. Maybe with the rapid rise of dual core phones and larger screens; google and samsung will want a dev phone this summer that will provide these options (dual core and larger screen) for devs to design HQ games and apps on. Because lets face it Apple iOS is one up on android because the quality games and that is it. Sony is releasing this year a PSP android gaming phone so I can only imagine google wanting their dev phones to start computing in that area as well.
G1 dev phone released Dec 2008
Mytouch "magic" ion dev released phone Aug 2009
(6 months span)
Nexus One dev phone released Jan 2010
Nexus S dev phone released Dec 2010
( ~ 6 months span)
Nexus S "plus" maybe in June/July 2011? marketing wise would take some steam out of apple's typical iphone release date.
Can't deny that there is some indicators of a possible marketing pattern.

The way i see it, is they will NOT do this to the Nexus S, there isnt enough profit in it for them
Ok, so I have a dilemma. At first, when sprint announced the EVO 3D, to me, there was no question I would get it. After HTC announced a locked bootloader (? clarification on what exactly is locked), I am asking this question. What is better, a stock (worst case scenario) Evo 3D, or a modified Nexus S? I know modifications make a HUGE difference (just ask my HTC Hero ) as far as performance goes, so the simple question is, what would perform better? Gaming is a huge factor for me too-- which is the better gaming device (I actually heard the nexus s has a better video card so I might have my question answered already)?
And obviously, the 3D is garbage to me, so don't take that into consideration. The only thing I hate about the Nexus S that has a draw on the EVO 3D is the 1080p vs SD on the Nexus (which is crazy). If there was even a 720p video capability on the nexus (hopefully by a hack) then I would be content with that.
TIA and sorry if this is a really dumb question!
although the nexus s isnt 720p, the vid/pics are actually quite good. and in all honesty, the "720p" on the evo's 8mp was straight garbage. basically the only real advantage the evo has is the dual core.
also, if u do plan on the ns4g, check out wirefly. they have a special right now, $99 on new contract, $149 on upgrade. no activation/shipping/taxes!
My upgrade isn't until July 1st so i'll have some time before I get my upgrade. As far as the processor goes, which is the real major difference, how much better "real world" performance will the evo3D get over the Nexus S (not meaning benchmarks)?
honestly who says it will? qualcomm "showboated" a 1.5ghz dual core cpu with the new adreno 220 in the gl benchmark, it got only 11 fps better then the stock nexus s. why do i say only? a brand new gpu, a dual core 1.5ghz vs a 1ghz cpu and what many consider outdated hardware, and it only got 11 fps. the evo3d is supposed ot have a 1.2ghz version of this chipset, so even lower performance (stock mind you.. if they hack it it will increase obviously). want more proof that the nexus s is still rockin? go to glbenchmark.com and look at the top devices, the ipad 2 (sgx543) is the top of the list, meanwhile the nexus s is number 5 (SGX540) as the top PHONE (all other devices are tablets).
i dont even consider the evo3d an upgrade for the price they are gunna want for it, meanwhile if you want raw power, best just wait for the samsung galaxy s 2. its been kickin in a lot of doors and take'in a whole lot more names
I'd say Nexus phones only forever, but I'm biased and hate all forms of manufacturer interfaces.

I used the Evo since August so for probably about 8 months or so and I just switched to the ns4g with no hesitation and love it. On the Evo I used ADW launcher so I did not even have sense running so for me I got a better faster lighter phone. It was a no-brainer in my opinion and I like the "pure Google experience". I also have two friends that went from the Evo to ns4g and they feel the same. I say take the ns.

Well, if I feel like I'm upgrading every time I flash (which on my hero, seemingly every flash has been a speed boost), then I'm not opposed to it at all.
On a side note, my brother has his upgrade right now, and he is in town this weekend and I am supposed to help him pick out a phone. I'm gonna try to convince him that the Nexus S is worth the $150 over the LG optimus S, which he thinks he wants cause it's free (waste of an upgrade imo [he's upgrading from a palm that is like 2 years old, so actually, anything is about an upgrade]).
My question to you guys, that will hopefully solve mine and his problem. How is the Nexus S as a two year phone? How well do you think it will hold up down the road? I'm not the kind of guy who can afford to buy a new phone out of contract (paying full price), being a college student, but come upgrade time, I am willing to dish out $200+ (but not much more) on a phone that I will be happy with for 2 years. I know that may seem like a lot to ask for with technology, and it's probably a lot to ask for you guys to predict the future too lol. So, do you think the Nexus S will be dead 2 years from now (when my upgrade following then next upgrade is)? Considering the phone will have been out for 2 and a half years plus, I am wondering this question...
I just found out that the evo 3d screen can display 16m colors much like the nexus, I'm going to give the nexus a few more weeks to see if I want to return it. Otherwise I'll keep it. But the evo is rumored to be $199 same as the nexus so this will be a hard decision.

Are you thinking about returning it because of the EVO, or is there something about the Nexus S that you don't like? Just curious to hear your opinion.
I am never going back to a non Google phone. The joy of not immediately rooting to remove a ton of crap is a beautiful thing. Add to that the priority updates. I'm sold. It may be a Samsung phone hardware wise but without the terrible and slow Samsung software support.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
I would bank on the nexus s to be the way to go. I think carriers and handset makers make new phones outdated themselves (software wise) so they can keep pushing out new phones with the newer software to make more money. Eventually the phone in question will receive an update if they choose to do so maybe 2 months, 6 months, or even a year later. This is why I usually keep getting new phones, just to keep up on the latest software without having to flash all the time dealing with instability and bugs. The nexus line will always get these updates straight from Google with no BS. The nexus specs aren't bad and its fast enough for me. Dual core would be nice but you have to ask your self is it really even needed. The nexus will be up to date for a while I assume with no strings attatched.

Well what made me go Nexus was two phones. The Samsung Moment and Samsung Epic.
The Moment got crap for support and not even sure to this day if a dev ever fixed the evdo lock ups and terrible GPS.
Then the epic with its crappy eclair gps. Then the delayed and delayed and delayed and delayed Froyo update. Which still had crap gps. That was later fixed. Sorta. The best was when they sent a rep to xda to calm down the pissed off users about the delayed Froyo upgrade we were promised in Nov. What made me jump was this phone already had Gingerbread and Netflix support and know Google wastes no time getting updates out. I love Samsungs hardware but their software division sucks. No more of that jazz.

i agree.. no samsung for nexus...
but then you say .. you want the GS2...

how do you know it's going to be on sprint? the first nexus never came. but yes, it would be smart of google to never use samsung again for the nexus line.
ill still be waiting on the gs2 for my next upgrade.

Sprint did announce a Nexus One. They just canceled it. Plus Sprint and Google now share what is probably the tightest cooperation out of any carrier so a Sprint Nexus 3 on launch day is very likely now.

Oh,uh, it's the pleats ... the pleats in the pants.

People like to stick to HTC but HTC has had a lot of problems too. I own a N1 and the touch screen sucks, build quality looks nice on the outside but almost always has issues like light bleeding (EVO), and they are known to stick with old chipsets (like slightly updating the same 2008 Scorpion core for their dual cores).
I personally would like to see a Moto Nexus. They do a good job with hardware.
Im sure its just a prototype but that is one ugly phone. I wouldnt buy it off looks already....
Yeah, I'm usually not a big fan of chrome / silver anything ... as a test device I wouldn't be surprised to see it change. Maybe if we complain enough we can ensure a chrome edging doesn't make the final cut.
I will definitely be sitting on my Evo, waiting and waiting and waiting.
edit: awww, if it is fake ... pooh. still going to hold out for some nexus news down the line

I can't get the evo 3D anyways just used my girl's upgrade and she got the nexus s; my upgrade isn't until August so I'm thinking galaxy s 2 maybe. She'd kill me if I spent 599 on a phone when my upgrade is a few months away lol. You guys think by August sprint will launch another device? I'm not into the whole design and 3D gimmick stuff anyways.
Sweet! I would be stoked if the nexus 3 is made by HTC. The nexus s is great and all but Samsung's continuing radio issues make their phones less desirable to own. I'll take a little light leak over a shotty radio any day. May have to sell my 3d for this one.

Hmm, even with the news of the Atrix-like device coming to Sprint I have even less reason to just jump on a phone. For a second there I was gonna pull the trigger on the NS but I'm glad I didn't. I had seen word of that possibly dropping mid summer, but I'm pretty sure that was just rumor. That GS2 - should it come through - is a tempting one. Haven't heard anything on possible / rumored date of landing, but I haven't done a good job of keeping up with everything, either.
I'm just gonna play the waiting game. Something I'm usually not good with, but I've done well enough with putting off a tablet purchase. And totally agree on the Evo 3D - not sure how I feel about it. Especially if some other more than capable device comes to Sprint.
I know I'm not. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me. Its already September and Gingerbread came out last December on a Samsung phone nonetheless, and we're still on software that's almost a year and a half old with no source code or drivers in sight. We can't even create our own up to date roms, and Samsung is unreliable when it comes to updates. Our phone possibly has the worst development community thanks to Samsung slacking on updates, drivers, and source code. I will never go through this again. Goodbye Samsung forever. Its either a Nexus phone, iPhone or Windows Phone for me from now on, and none by Samsung.

I'm strongly considering it...I certainly like the specs
But in all probability I'm going to jump ship to the iPhone next month. Between the last two phones I've owned (Epic and Palm Pre), I'm getting pretty damn sick of manufacturers who can't develop worth a spit.
No Epic Touch for me...
Too much money since i only get 75 dollars off...
Plus im waiting for Nexus to come to sprint by january or the next HTC device.
I like my epic still and am done with samsung unless its the nexus..
Ill be here still

what's the difference between this and the nexus s 4g?
Samsung is getting better I think w/ their newer phones, have way better screens than everyone except LG (which could go either way), and better specs. I'm not getting it though, if I could I would.
I love the specs and hardware on the Epic, but I need a phone with development behind it. I love what our devs have been able to do with what they have, but I am going to wait a month til after a phone is out to see how it is going before I jump in.

I got the epic in October and it was an awesome. Then after waiting for updates 6 months after everybody got there's on other phones I learned my lesson and now waiting for gingerbread official leak sucks. I want the next nexus phone only because it a true Google phone without the bloatware and seems to get its updates quicker than others. I thought about the epic touch but will hold off for now plus its another dual core phone which i dont think will be put to good use till more dual core phones come out.
this is my first Samsung phone... and last. most likely jumping to the iphone later this year. i love android and the specs of our current epic4g is awesome but theres no real development for this.

I'm satisfied with my Nexus S at the moment, but give me a fully functional 80mb CM7 or any AOSP zip & I will get it in a instant.

I'm not thrilled about selling out to Apple either but, let's be honest, Samsung's a waste of time. Google is another story...may be worth holding out until the Prime rather than be subsumed by the Apple dark lord.
Can't get it...
Still have another year and retail is too expensive
Remember buy a phone for what it is not what its gonna get and how fast. Always gonna be something better next month or so. I just refuse to buy any apple products anymore.

Definitely i would go for the Prime if you didn't like the epics updates ... you won't be disappointed on a nexus device ... and don't even talk about the dev community behind nexus devices ...
If I ever buy another Android phone, it'll have to be a nexus device or something I know has the ability to load AOSP on it myself. Between manufacturer bloat and carrier bloat I'm done with all the crap...
I still like my EPIC .... I'd like my next phone to have a physical keyboard .... but I might get this

Just get it at Best Buy when it releases. Best Buy takes $75 upgrades and still lowers it to 199.99. Every single time I upgrade there it ends up 199.99.
Are you happy with your phone still? Are you waiting for possibly a new LTE phone in 2012? Or just waiting on your upgrade?
Just curious to see what others thinking about their phone. My phone still works great, but being the geek I am. I'm itching for something new. The E4GT looks like a sweet phone, and supposedly there's a fix for the LOS that developers got their hands on.
Waiting for something that would be a real upgrade, so far I've been very happy with my evo, thanks to the devs here. Until sprint releases a LTE device that's killer spec wise, & has some decent development going on, I'll stay with my OG. I've had my evo since it came out, and its totally because the devs here keep my evo fresh & interesting.

Yeah my EVO is running strong still, and with the development of ICS. Maybe that'll hold me over? I can't say that if I saw another great deal on an ET4G that I won't pass it up lol. Just have to wait and see.... I wish we had an idea of phones for 2012 and estimates on release dates.

They already said the the first LTE phones wouldn't be out until around june / july. Though they will begin the towers in early 2012.
1. waiting for sense 2.1 = Got it
2. waiting for sense 3.0 = Got it
3. waiting for sense 3.5 = Got it
I guess I'm waiting for my contract to be up. Then I will consider something new, but I see no need right now for what I use the phone for. The next best thing isn't always the best IMO...

My upgrade isn't until August 2012. There should be a bunch of new phones released between now and then. The Galaxy Nexus and HTC Edge or other new quad core phones look intriguing, Iphone 5 (probably not I like the personalization options Android has). As long as we get an ICS rom it will feel like we're running the latest phone though, at least for now.
my upgrade isn't until March, so I'm sure a lot of new phones will be out by then. But if I had to pick right now, I'd either get the GS2 or leave Sprint for the Galaxy Nexus
i cant decideeeee, i dont know if i should get iphone or wait for early 2012 to upgrade
i do want GN not sure if sprint will take their time like they did with Nexus S
for now will keep the EVO going since we have great Devs... and recently swtiched prl to verizon and its working great/better so not sure why switch anyway
time will tell

My contract won't expire for about a year and my evo is still running nicely.
I will likely dabble with iOS and Win7 to test the waters once my evo is done for.

I would like another htc phone. Quad core, lots of internal storage and 64 gb card compatible(hopefully ). Some phones due out next year look pretty nice
We're comin from a pure power source.
I need to switch to verizon because I work in places where sprint's 3g service is junk, so as soon as the nexus is released, i'm gone.
An LTE phone (due next year). A quad core phone. Something with just a little more internal storage.

Honestly, it's going to take an awful lot for me to upgrade. There isn't really anything I want to do with a phone that I can't already do with my Evo.
Hardware Acceleration is going to make ICS run really well (even on older hardware), and I expect that the specs in the Evo will allow it to continue on just like a modern phone. Bluetooth, front-facing camera, etc. will continue to make it a contender.
I will be sticking with mine (not counting an accident) for at least another generation until Nexus Next is available, and then consider based on hardware and Android J+.
I would maybe go for that Nexus S (sexy thang). However, there aren't any phones offering me my Death Ray flashlight and kickstand, so...the Evo stays.
I do have 2 bright spots on my screen though, which is annoying.
Im due for upgrade on 2 evos around February. The only thing I really like is the samsung s2..
That phone will probably be 99 but the time end of Feb comes around..
Who knows though, I may just hang tight without a contract..
Waiting for my contract to end. Hopefully network will be working better by then.
