I thought 3.1 Will bring 1080p hdmi support....but no...it didn't.....thrn I thought 4.010.40 will bring it(as per the changelog)....but still the same.....is everyone having the same issue or my tab exceptionly shows only 720p...!?

Running .40 version and 1080p hdmi out works but it is not smooth at all. It plays normally for a while then the picture pauses for a second then continue this behavour randomly.
Remember to play 1080 video file, so it will automatically switch from 720 to 1080.
Ooh interesting.
I'm not too surprised if the tablet can't decode 1080p but do other stuff work ok with 1080p output?
ie how does it work?
Does the external screen act like a second screen running at 1080 resolution?
I'm more interested in 'normal' apps like QuickOffice or more importantly, RDP running at .. well, whatever resolution this thing can output at... 1920x1080?

Unfortunately, they didn't put much thought into this (probably Nvidia's lack of foresight). The HDMI will only push 1080p video when playing a 1080p source, which it is hardly capable of doing. All other times it will be 720p.
What's the point in that?
I can only assume that app developers will be able to specify what resolution their apps can output in.
eg RDP app devs can allow the app to output at 1920x1080... and NOT mirror the tablet screen.
Or maybe Angry Birds to be in full screen, rather than having to scroll sideways.
Surely it's not purely for video which it can't play anyway.
Just plugged mine into an external screen and I can't figure out a way to demo this new feature whatsoever.
Unless this update is for .40 only.. I only got updated to .38 this morning.

Are you sure you were playing 1080p baseline-profile, not normal- or high-profile content?
Partially in reply to myself and to duongla: I just tried both with 720p high-profile and 1080p baseline-profile. Both are smooth as butter. Only 1080p non-baseline starts stuttering. As such I'd say he was trying to play non-baseline-1080p video.

No, sorry. I have absolutely no idea what software would do that, all the ones I have only show that it's H.264, they don't show the profile in use at all. Kinda lame. :/
I just bought an HDMI cable to watch netflix on my computer and I have an older HDTV, from 2004. It has HDMI input but it doesn't allow 720p for some reason so I get the little Android dude with the 720p bubble. How can I change the output to 1080i? Is there even a way. I'm running Thor's ICS v96.

You can't force a resolution, the tablet tries to output whatever the content is. The netflix app will not do 1080i, at least as far as I know. I'd suggest figuring out why your TV won't do 720p. All the 1080i capable TVs I've ever seen could do 720p no problem.
(Also, this may have been better suited in a new thread, you bumped a 7 month old thread)
1080 or 720 are automaticaly swiched

Hello,
Has anyone tried using the HDMI feature? I just received my cable yesterday and was able to view anything in my gallery and youtube. The only thing that bothered me is that everything was output in 480p. (I had youtube set to HQ and it made no difference)
Does anyone know if the phone can output at a higher resolution?

hmmm... well i wish i could help ya man, i dont have a cable yet
but hopefully someone smarter than I that has a cable will be able to figure this out
I doubt youtube even HQ is streaming in 1080p
EDIT: In fact, it'd be my guess the max output resolution is probly 720p (considering it can capture in 720p)
his gallery should be higher rez though. i doubt thsi phone has the power to play 720p compressed.
The max resolution on the camera's video capture is 1280x720, which is 720p. So I doubt the phone will output anything higher (like 1080p/i). In fact, I saw one reviewer that stated that he "thought" the phone *only* outputs 720p, upconverting any video to that resolution. But I don't think that has been verified. What I *can* verify is that video shot with the camera at 720p and shown on an HDTV shows EXTREME compression artifacts to the point that a lower resolution will probably give better results (although you will not get the 16:9 aspect ratio).
What about regular HD movies in 1080p/i that are saved onto your sd card. How did those do on your hdtv. Did they come out choppy or compressed at all? I'm waiting to get my hdmi cable to test it out myself.

Actually the specs never say 1080p, they say 720p. And from what i've seen that's only when outputting pics and videos form the gallery player.
We want to get netflix on our Evos and do the output to our TV's.
I wonder how the outout will look on that?

I remember seeing a post on engadget a couple weeks back with a video demoing the ability to play youtube hq through HDMI. they were watching a video that had paint splashing around in slow motion. It looked great! Last night I tried to watch a couple of youtube videos that were hq quality with the hdmi cable plugged into my tv and they looked horrible. I thought it might be a setting on the phone, but I could not find one.

I have the same problem with youtube. It seems that it does not use 720p, even in "HD", it seems the "HD" is actually 480p (the EVO screen resolution). Another problem with youtube on EVO (as opposed to TP2) is that unless you click "HD" there is no way to stretch the video to full screen, even when viewed on the EVO screen. This is one of the most unfortunate things I've found when trying to impress my iPhone loving friends. On the TP2, youtube was surprisingly excellent, it filled the entire screen and looked fantastic (without an "HD" option) the EVO seems to have actually taken a step back (albeit a small step) in that department.
While using the HDMI cable to my TV, it will output 720p videos (taken with the phone camera or made with handbreak.) However, it will not scale anything up. So if you create a video at the 800x480 EVO screen resolution, it will display in the center of your TV (not fill the entire screen.) I've not yet tried 1080p, considering the 1600mbs (realistic) encoding limitation, I don't think 1080p will be a good idea even if it does work, just stick with 720p.
So 720P movies and stuff will work just fine?
Can it display the UI of the device and other apps...or only multimedia content?

I'm still not sure if I'm getting an EVO or Streak, but both have HDMI, and either way, I want to be able to hook my device up to a monitor and use it in the same fashion that I would my netbook (i.e. light web browsing, very light office/doc work, maybe some light games).
Basically, I'm looking to get rid of my netbook and replace it with my new smartphone...but I have to break out to a larger display from time to time.

Exactly what I was getting at. I am trying to replace my laptop for the most part. This would be a big step forward in that area.
When watching movie trailers from all three movie apps, Movies, Moviefone, and IMDB. All looks fuzzy. Moviefone will let you pick HD and it defaults to that but it just looks like standard def.
Am I missing something in setting ?
Help please
At the bottom of the product page on Acer's US site is fine print saying that 1080P playback is coming in an update by June of this year. You didn't state the resolution, and I don't know if it's exactly the issue you're having though.
Thanks, but is that 1080p output to tv or better playback for videos. We have have 720p, right. It still looks bad. Try it, play a movie trailer from one of those sites, when the green movie trailer logo come up it is fuzzy bad.
Anyone one else wanna help answer this. Watch a movie trailer and tell me what you think.
Are we getting HD playback or not in 720p. Also does it record in 720p HD
Thanks

Acer said in Q2 of this year (May to August) for an update that will allow 1080p playback on both the Tab and when going to a TV.
Guys, After Google I/O I am starting to think that the update in June Acer is talking about is Honeycomb 3.1.
Ideas?
The gate is not Acer, but is Nvidia. Nvidia needs to farm out codec package support to Archos. Archos may screw up awful on their tablet specs, but they have GREAT codec support in their devices.
I still do not see much value in 1080p, since drains battery and takes up tons of space. Not to mention our tablet is "800p", so 1080p is overkill.
If referring to outputting to a 1080p display and perhaps as a media center, NOW I see the point.
I have posted on another thread that I have tried playing back a 720p movie with huge lags. I think this should clear with the next update.
I justried to play full HD videos through my pendrive......the default video player says file cannot be played and when I try to play through mobo player the audio and video is out of sync....I thought this tab plays full HD videos.....guys some advice!!
AFAIK it doesn't. 3.1 should have Full HD support but 3.0.1 doesn't have it.
I could be wrong though.
3.1 as far as we know will not play 1080p videos only output them via HDMI.
Currently only 720p can be played.
I hope im wrong about the first thing.
But in the tabs config it was written that it plays full hd videos!
And even xoom plays full hd vids!

FullHD 1080p wmv works and probably the same with some mkv's but audio will not ... it will just scale the video to 720p..
you can try mkv's with "Astro filemanager" -> Open As -> video
and the mkv will play, if not already loaded automatically..
this also works for other formats..

its not stuck at 720p.. but if you think about it, your native tablet resolution is 1280x800 , which is natively projected/mirrored to your telly and if you want 1080p which is then going to happen with it?
its gonna scale it...
if your video of 1920x1080 should be played on a tv without mirror, it could work, but i doubt it got the videomemory to have 1 fullHD and one scaled at 1280x1080 . which is the problem right now..
but i know Atrix4G have something like that, as i uses 2 separate displays at the same time. so it might be we get that function..no video on tablet, but fullHD on telly.

I dont think so, because have a checked topic for this problem. And some files is played fine, except 1080 i though have some problem with the Tegra2 decode, not because of OS.
So confuse about this problem, if can not play smoothly 720 and 1080, so HDMI output for nothing.

As I read everywhere, our A500 has many probs reproducing video at 1080p, worse than this I've to say that I hadn't any luck even with 720p format.
I've tried mani different players, with or without added codecs, with hard and soft decoding, but the results are always poor.
I'm talking 'bout Utube films, but also some H264 or .mkv (perfectly working on every pc or notebook even with am embedded graphic adap.
So, what we're gonna do? wait for a solution embedded into the OTA final 3.1, or is it an hardware problem we are facing right now despite the technical declared data of the various OEMs? Isn't tegra2 capable to manage hi-res videos?
Some guru's technical explanation would be appreciate, in order to clarify this situation, at least to give us good reason to hope or to give up with further expectations...
...and in any case, I'm glad to thank you for thy wonderfull job I do in this forum
some facts,
- stock acer rom 3.1 plays 1080p mp4 material just fine through HDMI.
- it will not be possible to play a 720p movie on tv as 1080p require much scaling and looks lousy.
- desktop is only 1280x800 (close to 720p) so don't expect 1080p just like that, it would look awful(even with 720p its still 4x scaling). (i seen it on folio100) and LG Optimus 2x does it too..
I havent got any avi at 1080p, and no mkv's to test at 1080p.
the WMV 1080p i have did not switch screen res to 1080p when played, so maybe its just for mp4..
the screen Is actually larger... its 1280x800 you get 720 because it removes the bottom bar(this is done so you don't see stretching and it will look horrible)...
you cant get actually 1080... its a mirror... you cant mirror something to make it look bigger, Its just a workaround triggered by the hardware decoder... that gets you the 1080...

Do you mean 720 on the Acer screen or on the TV? Cuz when I play 720p thru HDMI the image is perfect.
Why when I plug my device into my 1080 HD TV I can never get the resolution correct, the closest I can get it is when I set it to wide but I see my device not fitting the screen it is larger, now I am just talking about my desktop not videos.

Motorola Atrix(tegra2 baseD) do 2 separate screens. its indeed possible with tegra2 to have 2 different screen, i ported atrix release to folio100 and had a mediacenter on hdmi + android screen locally on tablet..
like with the 1080p playback, where you have a black screen on tablet, i think thats how 3.x handle it for now.. although its possible (since atrix has done it)
the chipset handles 2 screens fine, since atrix can do it, but vendors making the software is not making it possible, so what Google is doing is not much on this area, only motorola manage to do it, with their ubuntu + mediacenter + android solution.
lets hope someone else makes it.

i just looked through the atrix section, and it seems that ppl experience only 720p with its mediacenter function, so it might be 2 diff. displays but still only 720p..
so probably not worth spending time on. but they do have some technique to split the picture.

like with the 1080p playback, where you have a black screen on tablet, i think thats how 3.x handle it for now.. although its possible (since atrix has done it)
the chipset handles 2 screens fine, since atrix can do it, but vendors making the software is not making it possible, so what Google is doing is not much on this area, only motorola manage to do it, with their ubuntu + mediacenter + android solution.
lets hope someone else makes it.
same issues found on pre-3.x tablets... ElocityA7 managed to fix it, but i dont remember if folio100 got it fixed (as almost no updates happened)
i guess they're starting over,.. my tv in "just scan" mode still shows acer incorrectly.. so its for sure possible to look forward to a fix for it..

Thanks for responding dexter, What is odd in this video this guy has his tablet hooked up through hdmi and if you look close everything on hd tv looks the same as tablet, When i hook mine up to hd tv everything is oversized no matter what i set my hd tv to, Do you have the same issue when you try to play a game through your tablet..

It played fine on the Xoom with 3.01 too. There was a review of the A500 on youtube a while ago and they were shocked that this trailer played fine on the Xoom but not the Iconia. It still doesn't play in the leaked Acer 3.1. It plays fine on the Transformer and Galaxy based roms though.
Here's the youtube review. The video is tested at around 10:40 to 12:40 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMmS8ObCMbA
my updated kernel I shipped to Dexter for some testing plays that trailer fluent
Guys the hdmi out audio is too bad........anyone experiancing this??.....is there a fix??

have no idea how the roms will work with it... I'm using asus based rom
I can confirm that the Bourne video lags like hell on my A500 with the leaked stock 3.1 update.

I know, it's exactly the same as the stock Acer 3.01 rom.
I hope that the leaked 3.1 isn't final otherwise I wonder wtf Acer have been doing all this time.

I'm guessing it's probably got something to do with the 1080p output being disabled for now, since it works with the kernels that have enabled that feature. Just guessing though - we'll have to see what Acer decides to do
On a side note, for people wondering, the video file in question is a 1080p H.264 encoded MP4 file with a rather high bitrate (didn't check the average, but some parts of the video exceeded 12 Mbps).

i dont think its kernel issue..
Bourne movie playys perfectly with Galaxy rom with my kernel "angel" edition, which does not work with the "dextersiconia" rom, where bourne movie stutter.. so its drivers...any acer image has the issue.. so decoding issue is placed in the handling of the containers..
but firmware for chipset is different in galaxy/virt. images, compared to acer stock roms..
I've tried MX player, rock player and the default video player to playback my 1080p videos but they all still lag and play slowly. All videos are in mp4. Are there any apps out there that would be able to do this?
Cheers
try out dice player, and overclock, if ur tf is rooted, should be able to play smoothly. anyway I believe there are threads ard discussing this, please go do a search for them.

Dice player is the best by far IMO, even gets rid of the home and back buttons illuminating.
It plays mkv files and I have files over 3gb which also play without any problems.

Just for fun I searched this forum for "1080p" in the thread title only. This doesn't include all the other random ways someone has asked this exact same question at least 100 other times.

And there are more. I believe on of the rules of xda is to search first and I know it asks if you have searched for existing threads before you start a new one. Granted it searches all of xda to show you threads but the search button is easily found and searches a specific forum.
This is the first rule of xda
1. Search before posting.
I guarantee this has been asked and answered many times this week alone
not sure about 1080p that's going to be hit and miss especially if you have big file sizes.
I'm using revolver 3.2 at 1.3 and can confirm 720p playback with file sizes of 3 gig or so play perfectly with dice player.
This can play back 1080P files just fine....DEPENDING on the bitrate. It's a limitation of Tegra 2. If the bitrate is high, it will have problems. Just like 720P files with really high bitrates have the same limitations.
Honestly, why does it matter? If you're outputting through HDMI to watch things, then I can kinda understand, but the screen itself only supports 720P. Why bother with 1080P?
Just out of curiosity, does overclocking improve video playback?

Bitrate, uh?
How much is "really high"? 10mbps? 16mbps? and why the lower the resolution the higher the bitrate it can handle, if I got your post right?
Nah. I have a 1080p file, 16mbps. Plays well without overclock. I have another 1080p file, 10mbps, dosen't play well even at 1.6ghz. 720p file, still 10mbps, needs overclock (even 1.2ghz is enough). The difference between them? the kind of encoding. All this with Diceplayer, not the horrid Rockplayer, mind you.
Diceplayer works on most of my DSLR footage 1080 with 40-60datarate

I'm struggling with 720p encoded @L4. 1.. Mostly all L3. 1 plays nice in diceplayer.

If I remember correctly, movies encoded in High Profile will not play back well. Main Profile is the best this machine can handle. I believe it's a Tegra 2 limitation in general.

Let me comment on that:
LOL
Without OC, DICE player (and transformer itself) can only play Level3.1 content and it will slideshow on 99% of internet standard (scene) releases. If you think 'plays perfectly', then you're brain and eyesight damaged.
With OC, you can play play simple 720p content (think WebDL releases) with decent quality (though they will still drop frames in more complex scenes), but more complex releases (think blueray rips) will drop frames on most scenes and slideshow totally on more complex ones.
You would have to be really lucky to find a 1080p movie that will play. Many won't open at all, rest will be dropping frames constantly. When ASUS said that 3.1 update make 1080p playback possible, by playback they meant rendering first frame of the movie.
Dice player is the best
go for it
As mentioned on the other posts about HD playback, the hardware decode of 720p or 1080p H264 with AAC is currently broken in 3.2. Worked fine in 3.1, then got broke. Asus are aware of it and have promised a fix.
If you have such files (e.g. BBC iPlayer HD content) then no player will be able to play them back smoothly as software decode simply can't handle them. Only option is to either transcode or downgrade to HC3.1 to get hardware decode back.
Let's hope the fix is not far off now.
bro just play 720p. trust me you THINK you can tell the difference between 720 and 1080 on a 10' screen but you cant......unless your not human

Well, there cannot possibly exist a difference between displaying 720p and 1080p on a 1280x800 screen, since all 1080p content would be scaled down to 720p. Where 1080p would actually matter is if you often connect to a big monitor or HDTV that is capable of 1080p, such as I do on a regular basis for when I want to watch movies without having to boot up my desktop computer. There is definitely a noticeable difference between 720p videos I've converted with Handbrake and the actual 1080p Blu ray movies, but it's not really a big deal for me.
My suggestion for those truly concerned about high quality 1080p playback would be to buy a netbook equipped with a Nvidia ION or comparable video chipset, as I have had no issues playing Blu ray from my own ION-equipped nettop.
yeah my MX player would lag like crazy. Dice is the way to go!
