xoom Vs Galaxy Tab Vs HP Touchpad 10.1 July - Xoom General

Hi,
I have xoom wifi only. I bought it from staples and today when I went to staples I saw galaxy tab 10.1 as well as touchpad. My requirement is very simple. I want to give this to my parents, so that they can have a video chat with me. I was initially disappointed because skype did not have video chat available, then after reading some forums I was able to configure gtalk.
Another issue of wifi connectivity came up after 3.2 update. I guess that can be resolved after configuring some static ip. That I will try on xoom tonight.
Now I searched some forums in regards to which one is better and I could not get to conclusion. So need help from pros.. I do not want to spend more money than $499. Please help because I need to make my decision in few days as my 14 days will be over in next couple of days.
Thanks again..

Go back to the store and try them all out. It's the only way to know which you prefer. They're basically all the same software and internal hardware so really it's just the feel of the thing you want to find out.

Touchpad
The Touchpad uses the WebOS....

Don't forget to use the Staples $100 off tablets printable coupon that you can find here:

xoom xoom

if you're parents aren't techies, then go with xoom. that way you're familiar with the device and they can run to you for tech support.

[Q] Should I wait a few more months or should I get a galaxy tab?

Hi all,
I need a suggestion about buying a Galaxy tab. Right now, I am using a Nexus One which I am going to sell soon. So, I am thinking about buying a tab. I liked Honeycomb devices (Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Xoom), but, those are very costly for me. I am not sure if Galaxy Tab 7 inch will get honeycomb on it. If it does, then I'd not regretting buying a GTab. So, what do you suggest? Should I go for a GTab 7 inch or should I wait a couple of months more?
Your suggestions will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
There is always something new around the corner that is bigger and better. I am loving the Tab and got it fairly cheap on eBay. It was a new T-Mobile for $425. I would like to see Honeycomb at some point, but after playing with it a bit on a rooted Nook Color, I wouldn't let the lack of it right now prevent a Tab purchase.
I use the Tab everyday and find something new to love each day so far and I can type on it fast while using it to stream video like a remote control from my desktop to my tv over the network.
Hope you figure out the best purchase option for yourself!
If you wait a few weeks or months...will you be asking the same question at that time?
If you want a Honeycomb based tablet the only choice right now is the Moto Xoom.
All of the manufacturers will eventually release tablets with Honeycomb installed and there will be a lot of choices to consider. The question is what screen sizes will be available and will voice capabilities be provided. What about locked bootloaders? A lot of questions remain about many of the upcoming offerings.
The Galaxy Tab will get Honeycomb either through a Samsung release or through the developers here at XDA..... it just a matter of time. It has voice capabilities, can be easily flashed with different roms, fits in a jacket pocket and is available NOW.
Everyone on this forum should have waited. Sometimes you just have to get on a do something.
Im in the same position, I want a GTab but i know as soon as the new one comes out, im gonna feel like i wasted my money. meh, i will still get it i think and then wait for the XDA honeycomb release, cos it aint gonna come from samsung.
Hi
I bought a tab because it came cheap when I updated my mobile phone plan (didn't need a new phone).
Whether you buy it or not depends on what you use it for. I do heaps of reading on it, with occasional surfing and video watching. The high pixel density beats the ipad or any other 10 inch displays for reading. Surfing and videos are great, but you may a bit want more screen real estate if you're going to watch heaps.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
If you want a tablet that is also a real cell phone then get the current Tab, otherwise you might want to wait as Samsung is saying they'll be releasing an 8.9" Tab soon.
its all about what u wanna do with your tab...... but honestly if u want the closest thing on the market to an all-in-one device then it will be hard to beat the tab....
i use mine for everything and i mean everything!! yea the 10inch models might have more screen real estate but they are not phones or have the capabilities of a phone, therefor to me they are useless, i've hooked my tab up to a jaw bone bluetooth headset and it looks the part...
.... and as for honeycomb, i'm sure a couple of the talented devs here at xda are already working on a rom for the galaxy tab...
Phone call was a little bit important for me, so, I didn't look back and bought the GTab a few hours ago. Thank you guys for replying me

To Xoom or not to Xoom

Hi guys my wife just got me a Wifi Xoom from Costco for my birthday. I want to see how everybody feels about their Xoom and if I should return it and wait for a newer tablet. I already have a rooted Evo 4g so I don't need the 3g version of the Xoom.
I'd great appreciate some feedback.
Thanks

Can I ask how much you paid for it? I was in Costco MK yesterday and I didn't see any in there so I got mine from PC World instead.

I've had my Xoom for a little over a week and think it's the best thing I've ever owned. My iPad doesn't even compare and ended up giving it to my kids. Love the form factor, great screen and Honeycomb rocks. I highly recommend keeping it if you like Android.
On the other hand, the iPad is much more "dummy proof" and much better for someone not very technical.

I think the question is, what are you planning to use the tablet for? The Xoom still has some features that are a little better than some tablets, and is also missing features compared to some others. Also if cost is a concern, you are almost guaranteed to be better off in 3-6 months since the newer series will be out by then and you'll see discounted clearance prices.
SO, tell us what you think you're going to do, and how comfortable you are in waiting, and I think we can better answer your question.

Ill mostly use it for reading and surfing the net. Also ill be doing the usually nerdy stuff by trying out new ROMs and such.
I wasn't considering an iPad, I was more curious about if the performance isn't up to par, and if I should wait for a better honeycomb tablet.
Thanks for the feedback

I paid £479 for mine that's $791 damned they are expensive here. =/
These questions are so stupid. It's like asking if you would prefer a blue dress or the red one with laces... C'mon dude, there is an argument on both sides on whether or not you should keep the xoom, wait for another tablet or get an ipad. At the end of the day, it depends on your personal preference, your knowledge of computers/ android os and YOU doing research. Everyone's taste is different! I get tired of seeing these types of questions in forums. It's ridiculous.

If you don't like the question dude then don't read it. The subject made it pretty obvious what the question was.
Back to the question: I've had the Xoom since Feb 24 and like it a lot. I use it primarily for web browsing, news reading (RSS), email and FB, and the occasional game. I had an iPad for 8 months and was sick of the iOS limitations so happily gave it up.
The only thing I don't like about the Xoom is the rear facing speakers. When watching a video on the web or doing a video chat, to hear the sound good I either have to really crank the volume up, or cup the speakers to get the sound to come forward.
Thanks for the feedback. I've been playing with it all morning. I'm still trying figure out the best way to type on it though. Browsing isn't as smooth as I would like and it is a little heavier than I would like. My kindle spoiled me there. Everything else seems work pretty well. Email, tapatalk, google reader work well on the tablet.
Still trying to find useful 'tablet' apps though.

I picked up a wifi Xoom the other day, since I decided it's a keeper it's already rooted and isn't going anywhere. I also have a Viewsonic G Tablet which is nice but doesn't hold a candle to the Xoom. The G Tablet is now for hacking and testing software that I'm developing.

Why are you reading it if you find it so stupid?
Right now its not a great deal having a xoom. For me its been kind of a dissapointment the apps support. Not even google have updated theyre own apps! they work but are not for tablet and low awful. The apps from big company names like facebook, twitter, etc havent even bother to upgrade to honeycomb. Maybe in 5 month we will find more than 20 apps for tablet (if you are from other country other than us. you cant install many honeycomb apps), but by that time xoom will be obsolete and there will be xoom 2 or whatever

That was a very thoughtful and special gift. Sounds simple enough to me - Keep it. Enjoy it. Appreciate it.
Most of all - Allow your Wife to feel good about her decision then root it and enjoy things yet to come.

You do realize that the Honeycomb/tablet interface 3.0 is a mere 9 weeks old? Apple's IOS for tablets had already been out for roughly 55 weeks and had the the advantage of using existing iphone apps from June of 2007?
I believe Android didn't come around until November of 2009.
It took Apple quite some time to deliver apps and polish the software to where it is today.
It does take time and I would think Google is prepared to put up a hell of a fight.
interesting discussion guys, I am about to decide whether to buy xoom or ipad 32GB wifi.
Simple user, prefer a stable and trouble free tablet for daily use. Occasional movie, email, light gaming and some ebook reading. Wont be experimenting much. Almost decided on xoom, any last moment advise?
I love my Xoom. My only concern is the lack of apps. I think 6 months from now it won't be an issue.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
The XOOM is waiting for one or more important software updates. The XOOM was the first HC tablet and has been out the longest. I have also yet to see these other tablets advertised (as) much. Which one will get the most app / accessory support? My bet is on the XOOM regardless of which tablet ends up being technically superior later in the year. When things don't end up working as well other tablets (even though they perhaps should) as the XOOM, I'll be mostly unaffected.
The LG G-Slate has a smaller screen and lacks a SD Card Slot. The newer Samsung Galaxy Tab lacks a built-in HDMI port. The HTC Flyer may have their Sense UI Skin on it, I personally dislike manufacturer skins. The ASUS Transformer's build quality is not as good IMO but it can be had cheaper and supports mouse usage with optional dock. The Toshiba Tablet will have a full SD Card size card slot. Rea search the differences, decide what is important to you.

I need your opinions

Could you guys let me know if i should keep it or send it back and find a tablet with unlocked bootloaders?
also, any tips on the reviewing would be appreciated too

Keep it , until the honeycomb code will be released there will be no good roms for any tablet
And its just about time for working recovery for our iconia.
second guessing yourself
Sending a item back or not.I do believe that you should think about what you have.does the iconia do what you bought it to do.if you are thinking you bought the wrong tablet you will likely never be totally content with the iconia.
For me I can't seem to put mine down. So no second guessing here. Just buying time and the kinks and customs roms will be Available
Erica
Thank you guys for your replies, im gaining more and more confidence in this tablet.
@erica i am actually content with it now but i get bored with technology alarmingly fast and I tend to splurge. for example, my phone keeps me entertained because of all the development. Before I got it I was spending way too much moving from phone to phone.
I was reading about both the transformer and A500 when i bought it and mixed myself up and thought that it was actually Acer who had released the source code and not Asus.
....doesnt help that their names are so similar either LOL
giggles
For meI don't get bored with tech stuff often unless its bad device.I bought a Archos 9 it was lame heavy and slow. But this I have loved it. I use it on the couch in the van sitting at doc office.even onced used it to look up price on something at walmart. And showed sales person and got better price.
I have a cheap cell phone on a even cheaper network. So to me its not having the latest and greatest.I have a Acer 11.6 inch well gateway notebook and its flawless and well built.so I think this tabwill do my for very long time.
I just wish it did not look such a guys device. If you find a nice femmme case out there I would be so happy
Giggles
looked up a price in walmart eh? lol yeah that is handy, did u tether it to your phone? and yeah i know what u mean, the more i use this thing, the more i love it, like i just used it to write a long email to someone with no form of discomfort, this is not the case with the galaxy tab i have.
plus the screen is an absolute delight. I dont want to deal with the transformer's light bleeding. just gonna keep this one for the length of my 14 days to see how much in love i fall with it lol. then i'll make a decision, but its looking pretty good at the moment.

[Q] Missing Google Movie Rental

I bought This tablet For a few reasons and one being honeycomb 3.1 with google movie rental. My buddy's Xoom got the movie rental update on 3.1but after booting this tablet up, I don't see the movie rental icon...does anyone know where that app is or whether I need to download it? I've already tried checking for updates and my tab is already 3.1.
Any one know what's going on or have the same issue?
Thanks!
The wifi xooms just got it yesterday. No word on us yet

wrong.. i have xoom for 2 weeks and its only wifi but it has movie rental on marketplace.
i have now the GT10.1 and rental is nowhere to be found.

This sucks as we already have no way of getting netflix. I am about to travel quite a bit and bought this device with that in mind. I hope google doesn't take too long because between this issue and my newly wasted $30 purchase of logmein not working well on GT 10.1, I am a week away from returning this and gettng an IPAD 2.
For all of Androids flexibility, I'm getting frustrated with the lack of apps/funtionality existing on the "other" device.
Sorry for venting but I'm having my doubts about this purchase for me but want badly to love the android experience. That said, I love the ibternet surfing experience with full flash capabilities and the widgets.
Ok, I'm done now

from my experience the only issue with log me in is for certain programs that specifically require you to press the (enter/return) key such as when I use Disby (messenger program) since it simply wont send the messages. a different keyboard like swype or swiftkey should fix that i believe
FYI you can watch them through the browser by going to market.android.com/movies

Acer Quality

I don't know if anybody here has heard, but Acer just teased a new tablet, amazing sounding one, to say the least, and I was just wondering everybody's opinion of Acer's build quality, and how well they update their devices currently, and just the overall performance that you get out of this tablet.

Oh my! as much as I don't want to spend more money, I might need to THIS LOOKS TO BE QUITE AN UPGRADE ..
To answer your question Acer has good quality for the bucks in your bank. I like Acer as this is my fist Acer product matter in fact the only complaint I have is the microphone it stinks.. but if they have fixed that which I'm sure they have ill be sure to pick this up!
Thanks for the link!

Mic isn't bad at all, just not very loud... Some voice chat programs (including skype and gtalk, unfortunately) mess things up, though, giving you weird background noises (not on all devices, though, it works for me). Other than that, the Acer devices are very well worth their money.

If you Google Acer A700 you'll see that the specs on that tab have been out for awhile. I'll be waiting to see if Acer delivers ICS to this tab first. If they drop support on this tab, there's no way in h3ll I'll be purchasing another Acer tab. If they do give us ICS on our tabs, I'll be grabbing the A700, as it seems it's going to be the best "bang for the buck" among the 2012 tabs

I agree 120% with this .. I have a birthday coming in MAY .. Giggles..
if my a500 does not get the support it should.. i might just wait and get a win 8 arm tablet.. and Dual Boot it .but there is always battery issues with windows . we will see what the tech word brings us in 2012.. for now my a 500 meets all the HAVE to have needs.. as if i really NEED a tablet.
Acer always seems to be giving the best bang for your buck, whether it is laptops or not tablets.
One gripe I have against acer is their bloatware. Some may like it but others (like myself) can't stand it.
Also keep in mind that acer is releasing the A200 soon. It's pretty much the same spec wise as the A500 but apparently has no rear facing camera. The pricing looks quite attractive though. I'm still happy with my A500. I actually have no desire to replace it with something newer and better, and I usually drool over the latest and greatest in technology.
I've had an a500 since november and the build quality is great. They have been providing adequate updates so far, and I expect them to provide ICS, but we will see.
Ive been wanting to get a second tablet bc my daughter always has this one and wouldn't hesitate to buy another acer.
Other than build quality ill be looking at development on market app as well as on xda
Gameloft and other game developers choose a500 as a flag ship for development another reason I choose this tablet over Asus, Samsung, and Mototrola. I contacted Gameloft before I picked up a 10.1 tablet around September and asked them what tablet to pick up they told me Acer Iconia because Acer has been the only company that was helping them out the most with developmental needs.. so of course when I went to best buy they were out of a500s and I had 300 bucks from trading in my Droid incredible and I didn't want to wait so I picked up the thrive because of the nice stuff included with it.. but ended up having nothing as far as xda & others so picked up tf101 loved it but it kept slipping out of my hands.. lol so bestbuy finally called me to tell me the Acer was in so I picked it up answer fell in love with it. So that my awesome story and we lived happily ever after
So I will most likely pick up Acer if top devs do aswell.

Thanks for the replies guys! I still have plenty of time to think this over. Acer is definitely a huge choice now though, and I like this community, way friendlier than the original Asus Transformer. Back before the Prime came out, I made a thread like this, asking about Asus and what to expect in the tablets, and it was immediately hostile responses. Terrible, but glad I didn't have enough to buy that Prime, so much bad reports about it. My choices are now this A700, thanks to your responses and some research, and the Asus TF700T.

Oh, also something else, is Acer good with the bootloader? Like is it locked, or is it somewhat easy to root? Not a big deal, but just curious

Lol your welcome too root is simple as long as u dont update u will just install an app that do it 4 you but if you dont know much about rooting you better search thses forums

The Acer bootloader does some checksumming and stuff that makes rooting hard on the newer FWs, but there's a rooting method around that works (downgrading isn't much of a problem). As has been said, just use the search.
Alright, I was just wondering though, different company's products usually have completely different rooting methods than others; I've only ever rooted all my HTC phones, but thanks.

Just thought some would find this info helpful..
UPDATE: Looks like this is indeed the A700. The folks at The Verge managed to find the new Iconia Tab lounging around in Vegas and discovered that it's packing a 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, as well as the aforementioned 1080p display. It's also got Bluetooth support, a microSD card slot, and an HDMI port. As far as release details go, the A700 is said to be landing sometime in the second quarter, but no other specific launch information is known just yet.
