Wasn't sure where to opost this but I guess there will be some who upgraded from MT4G to Sensation when it came out. I've been using a Touch Pro 2 for 2 years and now I'm ready for an upgrade with T-Mobile. I liked the Sensation at first but now I'm questionining whether I really need a screen that big and the reports about poor battery life and heat. The Sensation is obviously a more powerfull phone but the MT4G seems to do everything the Sensation can do with a more compact size, more options to mod it and possibly better battery life. Can someone compare the two?
I'm looking for a good business phone overall. Email, web browsing, tethering, document support (will install documents to go) and I'll be working with spreadsheets a lot. The Sensation seems to have a very busy home screen with 3D and all that crap. Don't really care about that. Would care more about my tasks and calendar fused together in an agenda view for one of the home screens, but it appears they care more about social networking rather than important stuff. Not sure if I'll need the larger screen of the Sensation or not. Would like to try without a keyboard this time. Will keep my TP2 just in case it doesn't work out.
I haven't tried the sensation for a long enough period of time to give you a real impression on it, but after using a friends for a bit, I went for the mytouch. The phone is very slow and laggy, and there's so much more support here, especially if you're into optimizing your phone and installing custom roms. Maybe when they unlock the bootloader, but until then...

well i have had the mytouch for about 7 months now or so.. i like it but for me its to small for my fat fingers lol. i would hands down go to the sensation 4g. it might be a bit laggy so ive heard but i cant confirm that myself but im sure they can do a maintenance update to maybe fix that. as for support for custom roms i think that is a unfair comparison because the sensation 4g hasnt been out that long and it also has the bootloader locked. so once htc unlocks the bootloader then we will see how much fun people have, doing roms for the sensation 4g. i wouldnt do the mytouch 4g if i was u. its a downgrade to a sensation 4g. or just wait and get the mytouch 4g slide. at least the phone is duel core and has a badass camera vs the mytouch 4g. i will be upgrading from a mytouch 4g to a sensation 4g in a few days.
From what I saw, the Sensation is not much bigger than myTouch 4G. I have myTouch 4G, rooted, and I love it so far. Beware of the bad screen and bad eMMC chip. Lucky me, I think I got both good.
From what I understand, if you don't like the phone - you can exchange it withing 30 days period. That how I understood the rep. Correct me if Im wrong.

It's 14 days. That's what they call the buyer's remorse period. After that, you can only exchange for warranty issues and only for the same phone. Only way to get a different phone is after doing a warranty exchange 3 times, in other words going thru 4 of the same phone.
My opinion, go with the MT4G

From a productivity standpoint, the qHD (960x540) resolution of the sensation's screen is superior to the WVGA (800x480) resolution of the mytouch 4g's screen.
Really, if you don't absolutely have to upgrade right now, I would wait for the MT4G Slide to launch and decided between that and the sensation. Those two devices are more closely matched in terms of internal hardware.
Also, the buyers remorse period depends on where you live. In most states, it's 14 days. But where I live (california) its 30 days.

its a no brainer imo, sensation is a much more powerful phone, and about the same size as mt4g.
i bought my aunt her mt4g, and have played with it quite a bit, and for me, its just too slow of a phone. tested the sensation at tmo and was very impressed, but not enough to take it over my n1
Funny to see reference to MT4G as "too slow" from someone with N1. MT4G is very fast, and easy overclocking makes it even faster. People in Virtuous Unity thread report that MT4G is running this derived-from-Sensation ROM smoother than Sensation itself.
To the OP: if you're not into messing with the phone, there is no price difference for upgrade and the size doesn't bother you - go for Sensation.

Side to side they are almost the same in size.
Edit: shouldnt bigger screen and bigger processor suck out more juice from the equal battery?

Virtuous Unity on the MT4G is fast and very smooth. One guy who had both phones reported having graphical glitches on his Sensation that he posted screen shots of and that it was very laggy compared to his MT4G running essentially the same rom.

Ok, so I recently negotiated an offer to trade a mytouch 4g for my mint condition Vibrant. The problem is, the mytouch has some scratches on the sides, which will definitely bother my OCD; also, I will not be getting T-Mobile warranty with the Mytouch as I will with my Vibrant. So should I do this straight trade, or will I be regretting it. My main concern is is the Mytouch 4g any faster than a modded Vibrant?
I have done search but each one compares stock to stock.
They said MT4G is good because of CM7.

Its about the same. The vibrant has a better gpu and screen and bigger screeen that's about it

I had a vibrant then got a mt4g and now I have a vibrant again. If you go with the mytouch 4g make sure you get the type 2 sony screen.
Personally I like vibrant more - 3.8" screen was too small for me.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
One other thing to consider is UI. I haven't used the MT4G, but I have used both a MT3G Slide and an HD2 running a MT4G port. No offense to Samsung fans, but TouchWiz is pure rubbish in comparison IMO.
I'd definitely trade my Vibrant for one. As others have said though, you'd probably lose some speed. As the post above mentioned, the bump down in screen size might hurt as well.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
What about that 1.8 ghz overclock on the mytouch? I know that anything above 1.5 ghz overclock on that device will show no real performance gain.
I saw a mytouch 4g model at the T-Mobile store. I believed it had the sony screen which was pretty good. Too bad sense lagged like hell on it.
My other concern is how development on the Vibrant seems to be slowing down, while the Mytouch is going strong in terms of development. Even my Hd2 with the Expresso Sense port ran much much faster than it.
Perhaps I can get lucky and snatch one of those Galaxy S Plus metal back covers for my Vibrant, and completely forget about the slick, but a bit cheap looking, plastic.

Which ROM did you use? I was likewise impressed with the speed...if the video camera had worked properly, I would've kept the HD2 and just used imilka's (I think it was his) ROM.
Motoman's port. It is based off the Iced Glacier custom rom I believe, which may explain the speed. I tried imilka's ram port but it didn't seem to be quite as fast.
I am now rocking DFT's WP7 though, can't wait for NoDo. /offtopic
Had a mytouch 4G. Be careful, they have wifi issues (Weak, complete fail) and the external speaker isnt the best. With cm7 the phone was fast as **** and it felt very solid! I LOVED the ffc more than I ever thought I would. I loved the phone but since it had wifi issues a friend wanted to trade for this Vibrant.
The Vibrant, well.... it has a slightly bigger screen.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I was playing with my friend's mytouch 4g just today. And quite honestly i wasnt impressed at all, I wonder why the hell one would trade his vibrant for that!
Just have a look at the screen for crying out loud.
Sent from my JPJPM V2 powered SGH-T959 using XDA App
When you say fast as ****, is that faster than a cm7 vibrant? Or even faster than a hd2 running Android on ram. And yes, I mean ram. Some roms on the hd2 run directly off the ram instead of nand.
Decisions, decisions. Great, I just got an offer for a HD7 with an otterbox.
Though I am inclining to stay with the vibrant, see as if TW, EDT, and others continue to dev on the Vibrant.
HTC sensation will be released soon and I know some of you are planning to jump ship. What you probably haven't heard about is the dreaded death grip issue it suffers from. Yes, the same issue the iphone 4 experienced but this time it also affects the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity of the Sensation.
gsmarena did an article about it complete with video.

HTC quality control recently has just been crap overall. Dust issues, touchscreen issues, bad eMMC chips on the Mytouch 4g and G2, etc. Makes me happy that Samsung's hardware is still relatively bug free,
My vibrant, heck, any phone with an internal antenna for that matter, does the same thing. Try it yourself. Hold the phone as you usually would in a place that would give you, say, 2 bars. Then turn the phone upside down. You will see an increase of, at a minimum, 1-2 bars.
I've done this with various kernels on CM7. The its amazing. Sometimes I go from 0 bars to 3 or 4.
Lastly, my son has an htc sensation and so far its a love fest.

Yes, except software is mostly fixable with custom roms. With HTC, you will have a crapload of unfixable hardware issues. The newest KB5 official update on the Vibrant has already improved much of responsiveness of the device. I am sure that even if you get the Sensation, you will be flashing a ton anyways since Sense 3.0 is said to be less responsive than a stock Desire HD.

I gotta agree XPLANE9. I was 100% in the camp for an HTC Sensation. My Vibrant GPS got borked a month or two back because of BiWinning V2, after Odin to Stock failed to fix it and after screwing around with CM7 for a month, I got tired of it and went back to the Vibrant and somehow my GPS fixed itself after a 2nd Odin to stock after CM7.
I have the hardware GPS fix for great reception now, a front facing camera that works quite well, and a perfect form factor. I even walked into Wal-Mart and asked if they had a Sensation in stock for me to purchase. I almost got it, but thought to myself: There's just not enough that the Sensation offers that makes it worth it. With the hardware GPS fix I've done, and the FFC I added, the Vibrant hardware has everything I need. The screen on the Sensation is a step down, the extra screen space is nice, but I really do like the 4" my Vibrant gives me every night (oyeah). It's not an HSPA+ device - just another 14.4 device. And the dual-core still chokes on Sense 3.0, so that'll inevitably need tweaking assuming the hardware doesn't come up with any more defects.
I'll wait for the Hercules.
I think in the end, it's all user preference.
I too have the vibrant but will be getting the sensation tomorrow.
There will never be a perfect phone. We have to remember we all were disappointed with the gps issue but worked around it.
If you end up with a bad phone, we have the option to return it for a refund.

I was on the "100% Sensation" bandwagon for a while, but I though
"Why get the Sensation when Samsung said they'd step up their update process (which the phone I'm getting, the SGS2 unbranded, will be getting updates), their hardware is superior (and you rarely get a bad phone), and HTC hasn't posted IF they'll unlock the bootloader on the Sensation, while the SGS2 ships with an unlocked bootloader."
So now, I'm getting the SGS2, and I can't wait to get it.

Who cares about a camera, HTC is notorious for having crappy camera anyways. I mean its a cell phone, if you're into taking high quality pictures get a Canon D SLR or some type of professional camera lol.
yeah i would upgrade most devs are heading to the evo 3d
Depends on whether you want to root and run custom roms. The Evo 4G has a huge already established dev community. The 3D's bootloader is still locked (if I'm not mistaken) so it might be a long while and an uphill battle before we see a fully rooted 3D and custom roms.
Having said that you should consider the 4G is a year old handset. The 3D's hardware is better in every respect.

My guess is you will have to wait till it has been used for a few days by actual people to get a feel for what battery life will be. Also initial releases have always had "bad" life, updates fix it usually within a couple weeks(using thunderbolt as example). I'm sure if you left 3d off you will get much better battery and better performance, again just a guess since I dont have one....yet.

The pictures are sharper and more accurate. The camera seems to adjust well to the light levels. Overall, I am happy with it. I am no camera expect, but I do use the camera on my phones to take pictures of experiments and data in the lab. These pictures are then put on powerpoints for presentations. The evo3d is a better camera.

They must have not seen the actual phone (I played with it for about half hour).
1) The build quality is unbelievable. It is much prettier than the Evo. The camera button and the 2d/3d switch are actually very small in person, they don't stick out like a sore thumb in the pictures. The back of the phone is like an order of magnitude better than the old evo door. It feels and looks absolutely great. The buttons are very nice, but are elevated from the surface a little more than Evo's. The camera lenses/area also don't stick out like a sore thumb in the pictures - in person, the back looks absolutely fantastic. Evo3d feels a bit smaller/thinner and lighter than the Evo.
2) The device is very snappy much more so than Evo on launch or even now, but there were only a few extra apps installed compared to the factory setup. May have something to do with optimized sense for the Evo3d + 60fps native refresh rate + faster storage.
3) The 2d camera is very good. It takes a bit darker pictures than Evo's, but they are sharp and the color reproduction is excellent (unlike Evo, which often gives decent but incorrect color balance). The pictures basically looked like what you saw in real life on the display.
4) The battery life was so so . According to the graph, going from 90% to 10% in 22 hours and 1:50 hr of display on time, it seems to be on par with the Evo. Evo can do better, but of course, my Evo is optimized. Not sure how it will perform there. There were no flat areas in the graph where the phone was sleeping, so it will probably be better than the evo once the mobile always on and google talk are turned off.
5) The lcd is as good as Evo's but sharper. Kinda reminded me of the retina on iphone4. No pixelation, no overblown colors like samoled. About the same brightness as the Evo.
6) The 3d stuff is AMAZING. It took me about 30sec to figure out how to adjust my eyes for the 3d, and subsequently, I was able to adjust the eyes immediately (maybe less than 1 sec), when viewing new content. The effect itself was very convincing, and it was perfect, at least in sample photos and videos - there was no blurriness or parts of the image separating, it wasn't difficult or strenuous to keep 3d effect going - ah... perfect.
I had my doubts before, but now I'm sold. This is a true successor to the Evo.
The one thing holding back from the EVO 3D is the rooting issue so far. I know Sense 3.0 improves on the previous version, but I cannot stand Sense.
I'm aware you can also run LauncherPro and ADW or other launchers, but knowing it's still there kinda bugs me, lol.
I'm sure in a few months the phone will be unlocked and some AOSP roms will be available, but to the OP, if you like and use Sense on the EVO 4G, I'd definitely upgrade.
So I'm positive everyone see's this question all the time. But they always judge it on the stock phones. Well I'm looking to get one of these phones, but to ROOT them. Which one do you believe I should get and why? I'm also looking into battery life even though buying an extended battery isn't a problem. Also which rom do you think is best for your pick? Thanks in advance.

I would bet that the Epic would perform better and imo the keyboard is also better. Epic is easily rooted and has a nicer display. Easy pick.

The epic pretty much is an all around better phone
An argument could be made on the SW side, but that falls by the wayside if you are not staying stock
Mainly, the EVO Shift is simply missing to many top level hardware items, that make it a upper mid range phone rather than the top tier the Epic is
I was faced with the same question when I bought not long ago.
Screen size favors Epic (4.0" - 3.6" That's a significant difference in Real Estate)
Screen brightness favors Epic (Samsungs Super AMOLED easily tops anything HTC has IMO)
Keyboard favors Epic (the larger size of the phone spaces the keys better, Epic has 5 rows including dedicated number row)
Processor favors the Epic (1.0 Ghz Hummingbird - 800 Mhz Snapdragon)
I believe rated battery stock time is 5.50 hrs for Epic to 6.00 for Shift.
Epic has front facing camera (which I never use, but some people do I'm sure)
The list goes on, but you can google other features.
As far as Flashing ROMs, I am NOT really tech savvy, but after reading through these forums I was not only able to root the phone quickly, but flashing was simple and I have found the ROMs I've used to be stable and functional with very few bugs. Can't beat that.
Epic, all the way.
Epic. Who ever choosed shift needs a swift kick in the wallnuts.

Even though i love my epic i would go with the shift because it has locked gps in a few seconds and capable of overclocking to 2.0Ghz and 1.6Ghz stable.
Its fun to use but i like epic 4g because of its screen. and Samsung is Easy to manipulate and easy to use like rooting and all that stuff.
But now its easy to get the Shift rooted in all.
I just like the bigger screen and AMOLED is deal breaker. i went with the shift at 1st because Samsung pissed me off as well as thousands more, with a certain phone.
Thanks everybody for your answers .. I'm leaning towards the Epic now.

Yeah .. I'm leaning more towards the Epic though just because of the screen and 5 row keyboard.. But the thing I heard is that the Epic phones screen black out all the time, and I'm not going to have insurance or be on Sprint (flashing) .. And the HTC build quality is superior to Samsung. So I'm stuck.. any more suggestions?
I figured I would post this here, even though I also placed it in the troll thread, as it was having the same discussion
I haven't heard of the Epic screens blacking out, but mine has held up beyond belief, even after facing harsh abuse.
IMO, it is a not a "power/speed" issue that makes the EVO Shift a lesser phone, but the overall lack of top end hardware features, and those CAN'T be modded in later
Here are several reviews with the conclusions, as well as links to the original reviews, and the Epic is not just a winner, but a CLEAR winner in every case.
From Techd
You don’t have to imagine how two Android smartphones would perform when pitted against one another, as the folks at WireFly have done the deed. Pitting HTC EVO Shift 4G against the Samsung Epic 4G, the latter wins out big time.
...
So, it seems like the EVO Shift 4G did admirably well for some basic processes, but stumbled badly when it comes to complex 3G graphics. But then again, it has a lower running processor than the Epic 4G with only 800MHz — though that’s not the end all be all performance measurement.

4G Phone Fight: Evo Shift Battles Epic 4G
Avatar for Brian Barrett Brian Barrett —4G Phone Fight: Evo Shift Battles Epic 4G Let's say you want a 4G phone, because 4 is one more G than your current phone has. If you're deciding between Sprint's finest—the HTC Evo Shift and the Samsung Epic 4G—you're gonna want to watch this.
Both phones are sliders, both are on the same network, and by outward appearances seem pretty much identical. But! The Epic 4G, it turns out, is packing way more horses under the hood. As it should, considering it costs almost twice as much as the Shift.

The Winner
Unlike other previous battles such as the HTC Thunderbolt vs. Motorola Droid Bionic battle, Samsung Epic 4Gthe HTC EVO Shift 4G vs. Samsung Epic 4G battle seems to have a pretty clear cut winner. The Samsung Epic 4G, even though it came out first, has huge advantages when it comes to display, and features while the HTC EVO Shift 4G manages to win a slight edge in design and software. Overall the advantages of the Samsung Epic 4G are too big to ignore and it easily comes out on top in this battle of 4G keyboard slider smartphones on Sprint.

heres the thing though Shift is running 2nd Gen Snap. And even @ 800Mhz it pulls double score than Epic @1Ghz both on froyo.
Then Shift on 2.3 just blows the sh*t outta the Epic.
Newer Technology is better.
Older Technology is Wiser.
But in the end its all down to personal preference.
Just mess with both phones see what you really like and want.

Never had my screen go black or anything at all for that matter, but that would be covered by manufactures warranty I think.

What do you mean goes black out? like the power saving feature? you can set the timer on that...
As for build quality..who told you HTC phones have better build quality? that is a myth created because the samsung phones feel so light..the build quality is top notch, not to mention Gorilla Glass..

SmartBench 2010 and other various benchmarks but Quadrant does pull higher but thats not point. the point is its newer technology 45nm instead of 65nm.
I gotta say.... what a beautiful device.. So light, and the screen so much better than my previous device the HTC Evo which ain't that bad of a device, but the screen is phenomenal.
Nice you like it, but what make you choose this over the 3d? If I can know

THIS, and that i don't want a phone too big, so the Nexus S is just the right size.
I just got one as a replacement for my EVO 4G as well. I chose it for a few reasons, but primarily because on my old EVO (before I had to get it replaced) I was running Deck's EVO ROM which was basically AOSP modified to look and work just like stock 2.3, and I really liked its simplicity while remaining fully-functional.
Now using it on the Nexus, it's a marked improvement. I don't really care about dual-core processors and what-not with my phones. Not having Sense by itself makes it worth have one core to me, frankly.

I never used the Sense widgets anyway, so it's no loss for me. And I hated the dialer, though I seem to be in the minority on that one.
Well I'm asking cause I got both and I can't decide which one to keep nexus s screen is really nice and the camera is OK but no 720p I got a 32 micro SD card but I can't use it here and I don't know if this one will last me a year, root is easy and I got both rooted, the qhd is nice cause you can see more text while browsing xda which I love, but the evo won't get updates as quick, I'm really trying to figure out which one will be better for me but I'm having a hard timetrying to decided. Games seems to play better on evo 3d and battery sees better too, idk is hard

I'm in the same boat. I've got the T-Mo variant of the Nexus S and I've got a Sensation. Not sure which I want to keep at this point. I like Sense and I like the qhd display, but I also like the simplicity of stock Android and I really like the SAMOLED display. The Sensation isn't a whole lot faster than the Nexus, and when it comes to updates, we know the deal there. I switch back and forth, but I'm getting tired of doing that.

At least you can swap sim cards I need to call sprint everytime the evo 3d has great development support but no cm7 or miui, if I had cm7 I would be definetely take the 3d , and yeah sampled is great, sense 3.0 is amazing but no enough IMO, the screen density on evo 3d is good too

T-Mobile sucks at home and at my job. I pretty much rely on wifi calling when I'm at those two places. I don't know. I'm leaning towards the Sensation. I might just hold on to the Nexus S for when ICS comes out.

My 3G has been comparable to my EVO, so I feel no loss there. My reception sucks at home but it does on every network; Sprint gave me an Airave to resolve that problem.
