SGS ultra hot during Dungeon Defenders - Galaxy S II General

Hi guys,
I'm just wondering, my phone gets ultra hot when i'm running hd games or dungeon defenders.
It's so hot that it's barely comfortable holding the phone.
touching the screen on the left keypad (which is the top left of the phone - near the cameras) is near impossible and borderline scalding and blistering.
Are you guys experiencing this on your phone?

I have similar during "Medieval Castle Defense", especially if I have brightness turned up.
Since I have rooted my phone and locked its upper clock to 800MHz this has decreased a lot, its now getting only hand warm. Performance is still good - no lags, no hangs, and if I need more power, I can just "unlock the lock".
So I guess while using very graphic intense applications while having brightness not drecreased, this is normal.

Thing is, I don't have brightness up that high. I usually keep it in the low region. And by low, I mean in the 10-20% region.
I'm surprised that the phone cooks up a lot during intensive gaming. a bit worried that it might fry itself during gaming..

Same issue here...

Dungeon Defenders working on SGS2 already?

Yes, this the only and first game that I have found makes the phone exceptionally hot, in particular near camera area, even some of the heavy graphical gameloft games only make the device warm, must be something wrong with the game I would say, removing the game

From the tear down, the problem lies with the processor. or mainboard.
What's your settings?
Rooted/unrooted?
Rom?
I'm running stock unrooted 2.3.3 and i'm having this problem.
I did notice that it doesn't get heated all the time. Hot yes, but not all the time. It does mean that it might not be safe to run background apps while heavy gaming.

Im geeting the same problem with guns'n'glory and robo defense. I have brightness at 50% but the phone becomes a fire risk after about 30 minutes of play.

I think I actually burned my thumb (left hand) while playing for 20 mins this morning. Fun game though
Badly designed phone or game not optimized well enough for SGS2?

Not sure.
What is your phone setup?
i'm running unrooted stock rom I9100XWKF-1
What are you running on?
I have read somewhere that KE-2 version does not overheat.
Cannot confirm that though.

I have Asphalt 6 a racing game which isn't playable with my silicone cover around it. It will eventually lag and will stop. Without the cover i have no problems. Also having this problem with the gangster game from gameloft.

Guys, the actual problem on the phone is heat dissipation. It's very thin and made of plastic. So,all the heat the processor generates goes directly to its environment.I don't think it's going to get burnt or something, but it makes everyone feel uncomfortable.
The best solution available for those who don't want to sacrifice any performance is rooting and undervolting. Most phones should be able to handle 1200MHz at 1200mV.This saves you from a good amount of overheating.Tegrak Ultimate or custom kernels allow for undervolting for those who haven't bothered yet.
I for one am overclocked too,but don't experience any overheating that often.Only when I go up to 1.6GHz my phone overheats a lot,but still, not as much as when it was stock.

I havent had any game really warm up my phone, this game makes the phone just a tad bit warm like angry birds.

I can coming from KE2 - same issue with RoboDefense. I did factory reset the phone and I think it solved the issue mostly. I tested it only briefly so cannot confirm 100% as I uninstalled the ancient RoboDef version I had short after that and installed a new one from market. Phone did got warm, not burning though as it used to.
I did the factory reset because I suspected something's draining the battery and couldn't tell what (factory reset solved this as well) so I think it has something to do with combination of some processes which are running concurrently.

I am currently running the KE2 kernel and I am here to report that I have heating issues when playing HD games also. The heat really bothers me or shall I say worry me a lot? I'm looking to root my phone and underclock it so it won't get that hot.

Yeah,me too.Believe me,I had some serious overheating at stock speeds, let alone when I tried 1.4GHz.I used to underclock to 1GHz or 800MHz to play games in fact.Since I made it 1.6GHz,overheating adios.Well, kind of.Still,it's far better than stock.Never burnt my finger with 1.6!

So we may say that Exynos is done for 1.6. and underclocked and this pisses our little dual-core gem off ))
But i'll give it a try. Actually most of the time phones get hot ehen they're intensly used for connection. I never had CPU overheating any of my phones till now. I gues Samsung's own softcraps screws their hi-tech device. A slimmed modified undervolted-kerneled ROM without Samsung's softcrap will do the job...
By the way..t hanks for the heads up man...

try underclocking to 800mhz, performance shouldnt suffer too much, and the phone wont get as hot.

Well,it's not guarranteed this will also work on other's devices.Keep in mind that every CPU is unique, for many reasons that I won't discuss here, you probably already know. Many things are in play here though. Some people have even experienced overheating more than normal when undervolting.Things are reaaaally ****ed up.It's probably that with changes in voltages, resistances also change inside the chip. That MAY be causing it,just taking a wild guess here,so take my word with more than one pinch of salt.

The answer to put it in Power saving mode kind of defeats the object of having a phone like this.
But yeah, i would expect it to get quite warm, still awaiting my delivery so can see for myself soon enough!

oh im not saying i disagree, im just saying thats the way it gets. however
-you can disable power saving mode effecting the screen at all
-also try putting a thin case on it that might help if you just dont want the feeling of a hot phone

At least it does not get hotter than Xperia Z and google nexus 4. I have this s4 qualcom version as well, and it does get warm but it gets hot only if i turned on 3g + playing games. i think it is normal.
Got the same issue on my I9505... its really hot imo. This is my first Android so i dont know any to comapre it to maybe the iPhone 4s when it gets hot. But S4 is way hotter that the Iphone.
Any idea if this is indeed normal or my unit is broken?
I am having the same problem with my i9505. There is already an opened thread on the subject. For more information go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2252978

Placebo effect. The new firmwares have indeed some tweaks, like slower recharge in order to not render the phone unusable while plugged to the wall, but it does not solve the main problem.

My G2 D801 with KK lags on low requirement games

Hey I'm back once again with another issue I am really surprised to be seeing LAG or FPS skip on games like temple run 2 or subway surfers when I get no lag on any of my GTA games (I own all 3) the only time GTA starts to lose fps is if I play for an hour PR so logically but like I said I get fps lag on those games that don't require a good CPU and yet even with a beastly phone they lag .. So can anyone help me fix this or know how because its pretty frustrating how one can't play a game like subway surfer without losing his mind ... ADDITITIONAL INFO: the UI of the phone is really fast and I have no problems web browsing or going on apps like fb.

Thanks for attempting to help though

Nexus 9 is #1 on Passmark

Looks like the Nexus 9 far surpasses all other tablets in performance.
http://www.androidbenchmark.net/passmark_chart.html
Amazing how much of a difference there is. While the Nexus currently scores an average of 8152, the Samsung Galaxy S line of tablets score around 5500. The Nexus 10 and Nexus 6 both score around 4000. The original Kindle Fire, which was my last device, scores just 1400.
EDIT: The Nexus 9 is also the fastest device on Antutu.

This tablet has been factory reset probably 20 times between trying all the kernels and a few of my own, resetting is just a temporary fix. Factory resetting isn't doing anything special. Its just clearing cache and ram giving a temp fix. When the tablet heats back up starts throttling and ram starts filling up, the same issues come back every time. Trust me, I wish it was that easy. I really want to like this thing.
I have no idea what people do on/with their tablets to cause these so called issues but I don't get any of those problems with mine. Perhaps if people stopped effing around with them then they would work as expected. Just saying........

3 tablets 3 times? Doubt it. I don't think this should be news to people. I will say this though- being slow at opening some apps happens all the time. My nexus 5 is always faster than the 9.
The lag OTOH, only gets really bad proportional to heat. While browsing earlier the CPU got to over 140°(F) in a relatively short period, and that is when it turns in to a lagging turtle of a tablet. I have not looked at any of the thermal cut offs in source, but it didn't seem to be going past 1500 MHz.
Add to this not much free ram, which happens all the time on this tablet, it becomes a nightmare.
But, I either get pissed and return , or I get pissed and want to help. So I cloned the source get it compiling now I have a few things I wanna try. One seems to be at forefront as soon as I have so me patches in my treeq may I'll give it a whirl.
Gotta get back accustomed to git its been a while.

Lag Playing Spider-Man Unlimited

Hello guys,
First of all I have a great time playing any games so far on my 910C, even heavy ones, but Spider-man Unlimited is giving me a pretty hard time! Most of you will say the game is butter smooth, and it is on the first hour or so of gameplay. When you advance in the game a lot of explosions and stuff start to pop up and the frame rate goes down. When you fight Electro the lag is unbearable. Keep in mind that my unit is not a fake or faulty.
What I have tried so far:
Downscaling resolution with NoMone Resolution Changer.
Disabling DVFS.
Emulating different GPUs and lowering the render resolution using GLToos (graphics optimizer)
Setting the governor to performance.
Disabling activities in the background.
Different combinations of the above.
And for my surprise none of these seemed to make a huge effect.
Yet to try:
Messing with the thermal throttle (haven't seen how yet).
I obviously don't have power saving mode on and sync is off. It's clear the game is not optimized and I'm aware that some other flagships have the same issue, but I'm looking for a way to fix this as I'm really addicted to the game and the lag is killing me.
Any ideas? Thanks.
U pretty much tried what u could, so the only thing really left is to email the dev and wait for it to be optimized for our phone. At least ur not one of the many people on xda that is like, oh why does the snapdragon suck, why is this phone so slow blah blah blah. Those people really annoy me that the first thing they blame is the chip/gpu, when it's clearly the software not being optimized.

Nice to hear!
My freezes followed by restarts were caused by disabling dvfs (incompatibility of some apps I guess).
Maybe this game is impossible to optimize from our end, so I'll leave it as it is. But it was good to make the post for other people having similar issues with this and other games.

The Ultimate Kernel helped a lot! Totally recommend it (intended to the C version, check the main thread for other versions)! If you crank every setting up and manage to keep the phone cold if really flies, but even just swapping the kernel improved gameplay.

S7 Edge Exynos GPU throttle

I've been using s7 exynos variant for quite some time and it's a very nice phone but there's one huge problem with it, when I start playing some games like modern combat 5, Hit etc at first I get 60 fps then after some time the performance drops. It's probably due to aggressive gpu throttle as the device barely gets warm. Is there any way to disable the gpu throttle?

BUMP
Firstly, i have no idea what modifications you could make as i dont have any issues like what you report.
Secondly, modifying any throttling is inherently dangerous. A slight tweak and your phone could overheat and batteries tend to explode when overheated! You've been warned!
I would suggest you look at whether its an app issue before doing something that could brick, damage or destroy you phone. Its also kinda jumping the gun a little to say straight away its GPU throttling as it could be CPU doing work of the GPU due to a dev error (and thats seriously slow!) or even a delay due to loading graphics from an SD card etc.
Also, it could very well be root related...

It's not root related, i know exactly what you're talking about. I sold my S6, got an S7 just because of this problem. Exact same problem. Now i have the S7 edge, still the same. I dont know what's the problem, but it's very annoying.
Works fine on my shield tablet though
All i can suggest now is to wait for Modern Combat Versus, hopefully it will be better optimised, with Vulkan support
Update : So I recently updated my phone with Nougat and the problem still exists BUT I have noticed something weird, As I said before the game loses fps in less than a minute (it's still quite playable but it's definitely not 60fps), when I press the recent button/key and jump out of the game and press it again and get right into it again I start getting 60fps, then again after a minute I lose the frames.

This is exactly what happened to me,and weird thing you mentioned has been there since marshmallow, this is very weird, some games that isn't even gpu extensive also experience fps drops here and there on both my snapdragon s7 edge and exynos s7
Also weird such a beast machine couldn't run psp emulator without fps drop
Been waiting for more than half year for the fix or solution without rooting

Update : So I recently updated my phone with Nougat and the problem still exists BUT I have noticed something weird, As I said before the game loses fps in less than a minute (it's still quite playable but it's definitely not 60fps), when I press the recent button/key and jump out of the game and press it again and get right into it again I start getting 60fps, then again after a minute I lose the frames.

Hi, I'm having exactly the same problem with my S7 Edge and I'm getting crazy trying to develop my little 3D game.
Did you find any solution to this yet? Did you try to contact Samsung?
Thanks for help!

I think I've found a solution but it requires root. if your device is rooted then install any kernel manager that supports your rom (I use EX Kernel Manager) and choose the "high performance" profile for both the cpu and gpu. no overclocking is required. now I get full fps all the time. Actually the device throttles the cpu after some time when a resource heavy app is launched (I've done my own testing with on-screen cpu monitor app) so selecting a high performance profile disables the throttling but keep in mind, the device tends to get hotter than usual but not too much. hope this helps
