Ok.. So a friend of mine suddenly got a triangle with the exclamation mark picture on his phone. That's all it boots up to. So, he took it to T-mobile, they told him it's FUBAR, and sold him a new phone.
The fact that the thing boots to a recovery mode tells me that there's SOME way to un-FUBAR this phone. My friend is too technologically inadiquate to attempt to do any modifying, so I'm going to assume he was at whatever firmware level would hve been blasted out to T-mobile as of last Friday 01/15/2010.
If I boot the phone normally, it gives me the TriAngle. I pop open the keyboard and hit alt-L and the I get the Android System Recovery menu. at the bottom I get "E:CAn't open /cache/recovery/command"
I've spent all day bouncing around this forum, and many like it, downloaded all sorts of G1 fimwares trying to go back to RC29, RC28, 30, 33.. gah! The latest one I'm trying to update to is "signed-kila-ota-116143-prereq.TC4-RC19+RC28+RC29.zip" Which i rename to update.zip . I hit alt-L, select 'update from SD card' It goes through:
--Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update package....
Installation aborted.
That's it... no more log than that.
I've done the Alt-W, and Alt-S.. wiped cache partition. I think playing around with the recent firmwares might be fun, but I'd like to get this bad boy reset back to factory defaults. I've read the forums here on how to do that.. but all of the procedures fail.
I can get Windows 7 to recognize the phone, but I cannot access the sd card while it is in the phone. I've been transfering data to it by taking the sdcard out, and putting it into a known good SD card reader. I've formatted the sdcard to FAT16, and FAT32 quick and not quick.
Seriously.. why is this so complicated? Now I need some serious digging assistance. Is there an interface that will allow me to directly talk to this phone via the USB cable? How can I force an firmware onto it? Clearly something is functional, or I would get no I/O. How can I get this silly thing back to where it was? I know this thread seems like a redundant one, but as far as I can tell, its not. The typical procedures posted here don't seem to work, but I'll be happy to run through any steps y'all suggest. I'll resign that it's been bricked if that's really whats happened.. but I'm not ready to throw this unit away yet.
Ask questions.. let me answer them. I know this team can get this phone working again.
Thanks y'all.

bingo !
sounds like your friend tried to flash something he shouldn't have. or messed around with stuff he shouldn't.
as far as taking it to the store, and accepting their suggestion to "GIVE US YOUR MONEY!" that was a mistake.
the phone is likely fine, and maybe you'll buy it from him for cheap, then fix, resell/use.
good luck, should be easy.
The "press camera and power to get to bootloader" procedure. I've tried holding the Camera while pressing power over and over and all I get is the triangle. However if I press power and the "back" button (swooping arrow to the left), I'll get the bars screen, and a Gray screen telling me to press send to restore.... Which is all good, but there's no progress or any thing to indicate that i've done something by pressing the send button.(based on cell phone standards, I'm assuming "send" is the green "call" button.
Is this normal?
No yeah.. he gave me the G1.. its mine. I just need to fix the little bugger.. .. well.. then laugh at him
Ok.. one more day (well ok.. couple hours) of fiddling with this thing, and i'm begining to wonder if Microsoft was involved. I'm not able to get this poor G1 to do anything new. I tried using a different SD card, hoping perhaps the one I got with it was bad... no dice. camera + power doesn't do anything useful.
I can connect it to the PC.. but i can't see the data card that way. adb devices reads no output, so its not correctly attaching to the PC (tried Windows 7 32bit, and Windows XP 64bit).. There's gotta be a good way to force a known good image onto this silly thing.
Is it probable that the internal memory has gotten corrupt somehow? I know someone out there's got the golden suggestion, please do tell if you do. I'd really like to use this phone.
--Rob
If you can get into fast boot (the tri color screen) there are ways to flash it... try getting into your tri color, then plugging in the USB cable and see if it switches from Serial 0 to USB at the bottom, if so you are golden to flash using the fast boot method.
There are guides around on how exactly to do that, as well a couple places that you can download the official RUU that will do all the hard work for you!
gah.. nothing doing. I can hit Back and Home, and end up with the tri-color screen for about 1/5th of a second, then a gray screen saying:
This operation will delete all your personal data, and reset all settings to manufacturer default. Press Send to restore manufacturer default, or press other keys to cancel.
At this point, the unit is dead. I can remove the battery, and continue on my little quest.. but hitting *any* key at all (including the Send key) will not produce any sort of output. I've tried pressing Send one time, then setting the phone down for a full hour (watched a netflix show) nothing. I can't power it off either w/o removing the battery.
I would throw in the towel.. but from all the research i've been doing, it seems as if this one is behaving in a manner in which other forum users havne't posted. Maybe by continuing to try options and post results, a positive outcome will come out, and someone else who has a G1 behaving this way will have an easier time.
... or y'all can tell me that its toast and to bugger off.. ha ha.. either way.. I continue to google. If you can think of anything, please toss it out.
OH!.. tried an RUU.. found one called. RhodiumSPLRelocker Looks promising.. but can't see the device when attached to the PC... yeah.. guess the phone has to have a functioning OS before that will happen...
You would want a Dream RUU... I looked around a bit and couldn't find one. Maybe someone has a quick link?
Double check that your SD card is formatted FAT32 and see if you can get ADB to see it when on that greay screen.
I've formatted the SD card in FAT32 multiple times.. I even questioned if my Windows 7 32bit would do it, and formatted it on a laptop running XP 64bit. adb doesn't seem to see it ever.
I don't get why I can't get it into fast boot. I've been looking on ebay for dream G1s with broken screens.. heh.. I guess i'm preparing for the worst. really sad, becasue this G1 was actually pretty well taken care of. My friend didn't do anything he shouldn't. HE woke up one morning and it was like this. He lives out in the country.. so he gets pretty spotty signal. I'm wondering if T-Mobile didn't push out an update, and it got interrupted by signal loss.
By the by... I've been doing all this work w/o a SIM card. Does that matter?

its not the green send button -- its the red end button
see below extracted from http://theunlockr.com/2009/07/05/how-to-unroot-your-t-mobile-g1/
Load the DreaIMG.nbh File
1. Download the Original DreaIMG.nbh file:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=XXSQ0T7W
2. If the file downloaded above downloads as a .Zip file, please unzip it first then put the DreamIMG.nbh file that is inside on the SD card, NOT in any folder. (If you did Section I the phone is off still, take out the memory card, put it in the MicroSD adapter and plug it into your computer to transfer the file over, since your G1 won’t turn on right now if you did Section I above. Otherwise if you did not need to do Section I above, then you can just put it on the SD card normally using the usb cable and the phone).
3. Turn the phone off if it is on.
4. Turn on the phone by holding the Camera button and the End key until the bootloader screen turns on.
5. Hit the End key to start the update. DO NOT INTERUPT THIS PROCESS.
6. Once it is done, hit the trackball to restart the phone. You now are on the stock firmware RC29

You mention that you can access fastboot by pressing the back button while turning it on, isn't that how the hero gets into fastboot? maybe your friend tried flashing a rom that was meant for the hero. if you have access to fastboot you should be able to flash a new image from there, just place the image file in the root of your card and follow the fastboot instructions
Also if fastboot isn't doing it for you have you tried adb? if you don't know what that is look it up I've seen a couple guides on how to do it and they are really detailed.
Im having the same problem, Im stuck in the recover triangle of death. Ive done the alt+w and reboot, the RC29 DREAIMG.nbh , the update.zip, camera+power, I cant get the gray screen to pop. The only idea I have is make'ing an goldcard so your sure your phone accepts the update (dreaimg)... other than that...
Sent from my HTC Dream G1 using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Any chance the home button is stuck? I'm not 100%, but I think if you were to hold home, camera and power, the recovery would come out on top.
Home button is not stuck, and cant seem to figure out the CID of my SD card since my phone is unaccessable.
Well. that's the sh#%*t I made:
I tried to revert to stock then I used this package: Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2.zip flashing it with vol. - + power button.
The problem is that the screen went on as it was install this update normally with the message "booting recovery kernel image", but, after spinning Android gears, the device is stuck at the green Android robot with the yellow exclamation.
If I try to boot with power button instead, then it's stuck on the boot screen Android logo (the shiny blue one).
I tried to reset and to flash another update.zip, unsuccessful. With the last ROM I had, civato Flexthunder, I had CWM, but now, neither it's menu is showed if I press only vol. - + power button - what I have is "booting recovery kernel image", then the Android exclamation on the screen. Notice that, when I was using that ROM, I had CWM. But I used Acer Recovery Installer to flash the US recovery from it's menu. After that, I installed CWM again with this Acer Recovery Installer...
In the end, I tried what I read here, but I can't solve on my own...
It's so confusing! How can I have my A500 back, please, someone!!!
Need to know how you got back to stock recovery? Did you use Acer Recovery Installer?
If so you should just be able to put a stock 3.01 image on your SD card labeled "update.zip" and recover from there?

Yes, K, I used that Acer Recovery Installer when I was still with civato's ROM.
So, from Acer Recovery menu, I flashed that "US stock recovery" version available there. Following that, I installed CWM from Acer Recovery menu again. So, I put that update cited above and... stuck on that!
mmm... but that update is 3.2 - I didn't try with a 3.01... let me see that...
UPDATE: the links from Vache post for 3.01 full packages are a kind of xml... It's not possible to get the zip files! Is there another available link, please?
I'm not even going to ask why you used Acer Recovery Installer once you had installed a rooted ROM, because I'm afraid of the answer .
I think I might still have a 3.01 at home, but won't be there until Wednesday.

Had the same issue, then I realized that the update.zip has to be on the EXTERNAL sd card...not internal storage.
Hope this helps.

So, I put the 3.01 from here:

as update.zip in the SD card. Did it with vol - and power button. Again, the Android robot with yellow exclamation.
It's strange... everyone here did it and apparently it worked perfectly, why not in my case?
UPDATE: I changed the update for 2GB SD card. The progress bar went on briefly and so stopped in some point and, again, the Android robot with yellow exclamation.

now then you have to ask..
What browser am i using to download this file.. How am i pushing it to the device.. Does the stock recovery like my sd card..
try downloading to using a diffrent browser / diffrent computer.. try pushing it to a diffrent sd card..
there is something in the above post that is consistant.. im guessing its one of the above i mention above that is your issue..

You can be right, but since it's not made here, I suppose any update.zip can be used... or not... but in fact I'm not able to know what's the specific file for Brazilian devices... or can I?
man, it's 1+ month tablet! How could I do that? crying out loud...
Take erica_renee advice......download the zip on your PC. make sure you extract the update.zip. from the file you downloaded. Open update.zip file and make sure it doesnt give an error. Im assuming you can use the same update as north america. I dont follow that too close.
If you have a micro card reader ...pop out the micro sd card and plug it into your PC and copy/past the update.zip to it....then put it back into the tablet and reboot into recovery....
that will at least remove some fault factors.
Edit--instead of extracting the update.zip file from the download you may just have to rename it to update
You got your UID Serial number from the USB? It will be 16 digits long.
If so, use a paperclip and power button to put it into fastboot and then flash it.

OOPS YOU ARE Correct . to flash with stock recovery.. only need to extract it to flash with cwm.. But i think its a bad download bad copy or bad sd card issue..
might want to get the md5 sums and check them before on the computer then again on the tablet... after you put the sd card back in the device.. I had this issue with a older 8 gb sd card back when acer first released the tablet..
Again stop trying the exact same thing. change one at a time and you will find your issue.. . AGAIN GOOD LUCK...

I did it. Renamed the file to update.zip, but the yellow exclamation came along briefly...
I have had my acer iconia tablet for 2 months.
I am a total noob when it comes to rooting, flashing or installing new roms on any android device. Never done anything like it.
My tablet just boot loops and all i get is "green android icon holding a yellow triangle with an exclamation point".
What can i do. I have seen a youtube video of a user holding down the volume down + power key and he is presented with a menu to factory reset and cache resetting and all that good stuff. I do not get any of that. Any help would be appreciated.
the menu that you seen in the video. was likely CWM RECOVERY. You do not have that menu due to the fact you do not have a custom recovery installed. the android with exclamation leads to believe you have acer recovery. Its limited Only able to flash a ACER Signed update.zip only .
Reply back with exactly what you did with details about rom version and so on . So someone can better help you. To get the right help we need to know how you broke it..
At this point Do not do anything until you know you are doing the correct fix for your situation.. You are NOT Bricked.. you just have a bad UPDATE.ZIP FILE OR Bad format on your sd card..
Help is close by..
To be honest i really do not know what rom version was used. Like i mentioned before. I myself have never rooted or altered an android device.
From where you are right now in a boot look .. where do you want to end up.. ROOTED ... STOCK TO WHERE YOU can accept the acer OTA. when they push them..
sounds like you may be able to reset the tablet withe hole next to the usb port.. You have to push quite hard to get it to push the Button..
Im guessing due to the lack of information you are providing.. Sorry..
Thanks for your help. The darn thing is still doing the same thing. Guess i got to do a little more research.
If you're asking for help you need to describe what actions exactly you have taken in order to reach this state (as Erica suggested) of your tab. From your post 1 thing is clear - your tab is unable to boot, but what has been modified before remains a mystery.

Yeah, probably my guess, is you tab started to do an OTA update, and as in a lot of cases, it failed. And you're stuck with where you are now.
If using the pinhole reset near the PWR button doesn't work (a hard reset), then I suggest ;
1. Make sure your tab is charged.
2. Go to this thread, and select one of the rom update packages.
3. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
Use one of the HC 3.2 update files near the end. Note that the Megaupload file no longer works.
Note that some of the packages are encrypted, so you will need to use the "decrypt" tool he has listed there in his 1st post. Copy it to PC, run it, select your encrypted rom, and let it do it's thing. This will give you the same rom, only states "decrypted" at the end of the file name.
4. Open the rom using Winzip or 7zip. Remove the update.zip (do not extract the contents of it), and copy it to the SD card (replacing a current update.zip if there's one there).
5. Holding either Vol- press and hold PWR. This should force the tab to install that update.zip (you should see some text on the screen, then you can release both buttons. Hopefully it will install.
Post back results please.

Be patient. Try later. Vach's server is probably overloaded due to the leaked ICS Rom.
You only need to get 1 of the A500 update roms. It's actually a fully signed rom in the file "update.zip" Just decrypt rom you the original rom you downloaded using the instructions, use winzip or 7zip to open the decrypted rom, remove the update.zip and copy it to your sd card.
And Then?

Rgds,
trying to recover A500 - boot recovery failed
Hi - I'm trying to reset and recover my son's A500 tablet. I copied one of the HC 3.2 Update.zip files to a microSD card, then held down Power and Volume - buttons. As long as I hold down the Volumn down buttin, the tablet seems to be stuck in a never ending cycle of loading the update and booting recovery image kernal, then restarting, then loading the update.zip file and booting recover image kernal, etc.... If I let go of the Volume Down button, I get in red letters "Boot Verification Failed" message, and it stops.
im trying to help fix an a500 tablet. apparently the tablet gets stuck at the acer logo. when i hit power and the volume button i get some lettering in the top letft. I took the advice here and went and downloaded one of the HC 3.2 updates. copied the update.zip onto the root of the Sd card and then put it back in. I hit the same buttons again and the letters came up. so i assumed things were working. all of a sudden i get an android with a blue diagram in its belly (kind of like it was loading) and then it froze. after waiting for a second I got a second android that popped on the screen and this one is laying on its back with its chest open and a red triangle is showing....So I don't know exactly what I did wrong here. Any help would be appreciated. I am not exactly sure what he did to mess it up. I believe he was trying to install a custom rom and did not go about it correctly and therefore messed up an update and now he has nothing. so im not sure what to do exactly.

Yeah, probably my guess, is you tab started to do an OTA update, and as in a lot of cases, it failed. And you're stuck with where you are now.
If using the pinhole reset near the PWR button doesn't work (a hard reset), then I suggest ;

I to have had the same problem with my Acer Iconia A500. I followed the instruction and booted the Acer...got to the screen with the Android robot standing upright with the spinning in his stomach...goes to about 1/4 of the way and doesn't go any further....looks like it's trying to continue but has been at the same place for over an hour. Do I need a different rom perhaps?? I used A501.000.00_4.037.01.emea_tmp

Well, you can try this. Below are links to update.zip files already decrypted on my server. I have renamed them, only so you can keep them separate. You will have to change the name to "update" (update.zip) and copy one to ext sd card. Reboot holding Vol (+ or -) and PWR. See if they install. You may have to try each until one installs as there is no way to predict which one will work.

This is probably the easiest method to try first.

the "41-125-03-update.zip" seem to work for me. The status bar finally is showing but it doesn't seem to be moving. It moved to 1/4 of the bar and it stayed there. Last time it did this, it stayed there for over 2 hrs. I hope it's working this time. Anything else I could try?
My tablet was working fine and I left it there to go to work, coming back I found it on the Acer logo. Many search brought me here.
update ========
tried and tried and tried.......a few times that the status bar did come up, many times it stuck at around 25%. A few times it got all the way to 75% of the bar. It refuse to go farther when I left it there all night. It finally died when the battery was complete drain.
Acer A500 Stuck on ACER Logo (not rooted) finally fixed!
Just wanted to post some positive things for a change. My ACER A500 tablet (not rooted and running ICS 4.0.3) was working fine two months ago and I wanted to watch an ESPN3 football game on the tablet which I then hooked to my HD TV via the HDMI cable. For about an hour, all was fine then the tablet did an uncommanded reboot and then I had the android figure with an opened belly followed by an android laying on it's side with an exclamation mark. On the next restart, my tablet would not pass the ACER logo screen. After reading many posts with the stuck ACER logo, I was not sure how to proceed exactly. I have rooted a 7 inch tablet last year but I could not get my act together on the exact steps to revive my tablet. Finally I came across this post with the ACER ROMs already decripted which removed many questions I had about the exact steps to create an "update.zip" file for my SD card. Based on just downloading the file from your web site and renaming the file to "update.zip" and moving a copy to a formatted SD card, I was ready to try the process to load another ACER file to my tablet. On my first attempt, I tried the file named "206-03" based on a guess of the naming convention used or maybe blind luck. I preformed the PWR button and Vol down button combination with the "update.zip" file on the micro SD inserted in my tablet. The tablet started with three lines of text and then the android figure with it's door open and activity inside the android. This screen stayed then with a completion bar followed by a large text screen warning not to turn off tablet. After about 15 minutes total, my tablet was alive with a request to select my country. Bottom line, taking the steps to put the decripted file on your server and the simple button combination to start the reload process allowed me to get my tablet working great running ICS 4.0.3. I just wanted to post a success story and follow up. Thank you Moscow Desire for taking the extra steps to help the uneducated user!
Anyway I can check if my ROM hardware are working properly? I have tried all the update.zip and all of them show a dead android at the end. I can't even tell if it read from the microSD.
first let me tell you how i bricked my tablet... i was on cynogenmod 10 but i wanted to go back to 9 but for some reason because of all the freezing when i was wiping i accidently loaded the official asus rom update US epad etc etc so when i rebooted it gave me that bar and its stuck there i tried to reboot it to recovery but it wont give me the option to go into recovery like it did.
its said something like checking for android ota recovery...so i cant go into adb because usb debugging is not enabled in my tablet because i wiped right so I can go into apx mode because i can see it show up in my devices but it wont do anything with the easy flasher program, it acts like its goinng thru thr proccess but nothing happens on the tablet.....so then i went to try to update the drivers but everytime that i point the apx driver into the file it said that the driver is up to date..... so that where im at now please help me......
I donwloaded NVFLASH but i get that black screen it takes the tablet out of apx mode and the black screen desappears. and i think the same is happenning with easy flasher something is happening at the end that it does not finish the process
You get the OTA message because you removed CWM and moved back to Asus recovery.
You can try to reinstall an Asus stock ROM using the stock recovery. Get an Asus stock ROM (e.g. the one you already flashed), put it on a SD, power off the device and reboot into recovery.
Stock recovery just checkes the SD and if it finds an Asus ROM there it will install it.
I don't remember if the file had to be named something special or not, sorry :silly:

Yes rename to EP101_SDUPDATE.zip
Remember to extract the zip from within the zip first, rename the extracted zip.
Thanks!
I have done it lots of time but never quite remember if I should use the zip I download or the one inside it, and which name should this file have... I always end searching the same info over and over :silly:
so even if im stuck on that screen , when i put the update in the sd card it will recognize it immidietly without doing anything special? ill try that, i have tried to install the naked driver on all my computers and it wont let me , im getting a message that said that there is no software for my device in the folder.......... i really appreciate the help guys ill try that tonight see how it goes...do i have to format the sd or something or just place the file in root any other options witll be appreciated, what i dont understand is why there is not like a stock recovery or something
i dont think its gonna work because i dont get the screen that allows you to put into recovery i just get a message that states checking for android ota recovery
Well. Ler me tell you how I did it. It's been sometime since I used stock recovery, but I think it's allright.
1. Download the desired stock ROM from Asus.
2. Unzip the file. You will find another .zip file.
3. Rename this new .zip file as baseballfanz said.
4. Put the renamed .zip in the root directory of a uSD card.
5. Power off the TF.
6. Put the card into the TF.
7. Press Vol. Dn. + Power and keep them pressed until power is on and you see a message in the screen.
(Don't do this... If you press Vol Dn again you will get two options: wipe or coldboot)
8. As soon as you get the message in small caps press Volume Up.
Now the TF will look for an update in the uSD and install it. You won't have to do any further action. If it doesn't work the TF will tell you (I think it was and android with a red X, or with the innards showing or something like that  )
If this doesn't work then maybe you don't have stock recovery installed ok, or there is some problem with the zip file.
Hi guys, getting kinda desperate here, appreciate any advice.
I've been mucking around with my phone trying to install some of the mod roms from here, but always get stuck in an endless reboot sequence or on the 'huawei' screen. Havent been able to get CM10.1 or 7 installed and working.
I have followed the instructions, including the partition size mod....
This is not my current issue, however, just the background.I was at a loss so after giving up last night I tried to copy b162 to my sd card, but was read only for some reason - showed up as CD rom on my PC.
Out of desperation I formatted the sd (in CWM) and tried again, but couldnt even get CWM, only pink or blue screen.
Pink screen I tried copied recover.img to the one available drive on my PC (windows), no luck. It copies over, but will not enter CWM with vol up + power.
Went out and bought a card reader this AM, have tried to install the stock roms B162 and B136.
I can copy the .app files to the SD card (root/dload), but my phone when going to pink screen does not start updating, just stays in pink screen.
Have formatted the card in windows (fat32) checked for errors etc. Does anyone know if the 'allocation file unit' during formatting makes a difference? I have left it as standard at 32kb....
The current rom boots as far as the animated huawei (splashing stars thing) logo then cycles.
Cant get shell access with ADB on pink or blue screen.
Never really used linux but Im willing to try anything to save my phone.
I have some experience with microcontrollers and think there are some jtag pads on the back of the phone that might be useful but am reluctant to try this as I fear I will make things worse....
Many thanks in advance!
To add ? volume label important?
Just managed to get into the stock recovery screen, selected 'apply update from sdcard and got reply 'failed to mount /sdcard (no such file or directory).
I cant swap out the recovery.img file in the purple screen, I dont have acess to that part of the memory from purple screen, perhaps wrong version of android on previous install?
Was wondering if volume label should be something? I just left it blank, and have tried again as 'sdcard' still no luck.
Thanks again....
OK I did a factory reset from within the stock recovery sftward (couldnt even get this before) and it will now boot heh.
Oh well, thanks for listening! Will have another crack at aurora now =)
