would you take this deal? - G2 and Desire Z General

I GOT A DEAL FROM LOCAL TMOBILE G2+300 FOR samsung galaxy S2

uhhh... I paid 500$ for my G2... i dunno if I'd pay 800 for the galaxy s2. after my poor experience with the original galaxy s, I don't think I will ever have a non htc android phone again.

Idk. what condition is your G2 in? thats really what it depends on. if its in mediocre condition then its really only worth about $200. so $500 for a good condition SGSII is a screamin' deal.

I hear Samsung has actually gotten more developer-friendly recently, especially after releasing the NS. Either way, I'd wait and see what the reviews and root procedure for the SGS2 are.

dunno about you, but i was still miffed with the fact that samsung refused to sell a gsm version of the epic 4g (unbranded from sprint's crap ofcourse) to the rest of the world. I was so intent on getting it that I hoped it would've appeared 3 months after the epic went on sale in the US....

You know the Epic 4G is just Sprint's variation of the Galaxy S? T-Mobile's is the Vibrant, AT&T's is the captivate, Sprint's is the Epic 4G, and the global GSM version is the Galaxy S. Sprint just made it fat with a keyboard.

ofcourse i knew it was a variant of the galaxy s. you also do realize that the epic is the only one with a keyboard and the look that i like.
that's why i got a DZ. it has a keyboard. My biggest prereq is that is HAS to have a physical keyboard

The reason why it has a keyboard is because Sprint stipulated that it had to. In other words, Samsung didn't want it to have a keyboard but made one as a Sprint exclusive. Aka Samsung wouldn't be able to sell a GSM version to the rest of the world because it was a 1-carrier build. Why is that Samsung's fault? Its Sprints fault for wanting the exclusive. Not to mention that Samsung would have never made a keyboard one if Sprint didn't ask.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here, but all I'm saying is that I'm not happy that Samsung did not decide to release a gsm version. It does not matter if it was sprint's stipulation or anyone else's for that matter. the point is that they never released a gsm version and that I would've bought it if it was for a gsm network.
No need to go defensive for samsung. Not to mention that it is not difficult for them to sell a gsm variant for the epic.
after all this is simply my view on what I would've gone for if I had a chance, but i'm unhappy that they didn't because it was such a nice phone.

When carriers ask for a customization for a phone, that phone doesn't exist anywhere else. It was clear that Samsung was going to sell their variant of the Galaxy S without a keyboard. They sold the i9000 version in Europe sans keyboard, that was their unlocked GSM version. Sprint requested the keyboard and got it. Samsung made that phone for Sprint, its not like they had it in the pipeline and Sprint stole it as an exclusive to keep it CDMA. Its pretty clear Samsung was willing to do whatever the US carriers wanted by re-designing the phone 4 times for all the major carriers, and even some regionals.
I'd understand your frustration if it was a GSM worldphone kept on lock to AT&T/T-mobile, but in reality they'd have to redesign it to be a GSM version, and whether Sprint wanted this to be the only keyboard Galaxy S or not, Samsung surely wasn't going to make a GSM version of it.
But regardless, this has absolutely nothing to do with OP's question...

Which is exactly why i dont understand why you were so intent on arguing this when its not related to the op. It simply seems to me that you are arguing for the sake of doing so

Hero Coming SOON to US!

It has been confirmed that the HTC hero will be coming to US, but the question now is, WHEN and How much? I am certinaly in for one, after they speedup the firmware. There are too many issues with the lag at the moment to warrant a purchase.
Who else is looking forward for this release??
Details Here:
http://android-simplicity.blogspot.com/2009/08/now-usa-can-get-hero-too.html
it should be on tmobile
It looks like it's coming to sprint and AT&T, T-mob has it in europe already, so them possibly too.
I'm holding back my purchase just to see if i can has 3g.

I agree with it. i think its even more stable than windows mobile but thats for me
I don't think at&t is gonna get this. They only say 850/1900 3g bands and Rogers is the same. I bet you rogers will get it first in north america which is ok by me because then at&t customers can get it with the reduced price for data as at&t will not detect it!
The new Firmware update fixes all the lag... I have modacos 1.4 running based on the leaked update and there is no lag at all and i have finally been able to have all 7 screens filled with widgets... everything now runs smooth...

The HTC Hero will cost $179.99 with a two-year contract and after $150 in rebates when it goes on sale Oct. 11. That's a slightly lower price than Sprint's other flagship smart phones, the Palm Pre and BlackBerry Tour 9630, which both cost $199 after rebates.

Don't know about you guys but I'm not diggin' the industrial design of this "Hero". Looks like a redesigned Magic than anything else. Wonder if it has the teflon coating of the original Hero?
When they get Wifi Tethering working on the Hero, I'll get one... I need something to play with until wm7 comes out.
That's no Hero! It's more like the Villain!
I need a Hero!
I saw the announcement of Sprint's Hero not 20 minutes ago and it made me sad and disappointed. I HOPE the Hero that was passed through the FCC with AT&T/Rogers bands comes soon and I hope it's the European version.

Samsung Epic 4G GSM Version in Europe?

Hi,
does anybody have information about availability of this wonderful querty device in europe?
Considering what Samsung did with the Galaxy in Europe (what a crap!), I would be very upset to not see a GSM version.
Anyway i haven't heard nothing about a GSM version.
What i know is that Samsung did several version of the Galaxy S with different name.
And if I'm not mistaken, in Europe, is suspect that we will only see the Galaxy S, wich i hate.

Ummm, what exactly?
Not sure where I saw it but in one of the reviews of the Epic 4G the author pointed out an empty fully functional SIM card slot next to the memory slot and pondered why it had the SIM slot.
Is it true that the shipping model will actually have that sim slot?
Knowing Sprint, it'll be the same situation we had with the PPC-6700... our phones will have a plastic sticker over an empty cavity where the CSIM slot is supposed to be, then after we've moved on someone will buy up Sprint's remaining stock for a pittance, pay workers to hand-solder CSIM sockets into them, and sell them in some other country for 10x as much money.
If my Epic4G arrives with a real CSIM card in it, I'll be celebrating for a year ;-)
For anyone who doesn't know, CSIM is the latest revision of R-UIM, which is itself a superset of GSM SIM. CSIM is also (an optional?) part of the USIM standard.
Um? Maybe? Its called a Galaxy S Pro. But no, you won't get the Epic 4G in Europe... Europe doesn't use Wimax... or CDMA... so this will be as useful as a phone as an ipod touch. You may get a varient which will look different (probably more like the original Galaxy S as I've seen mockups of that with a keyboard).
Umm if the Epic 4G doesn't get a variant (plz plz same specs) with a GSM module instead of CDMA it would be very stupid of Samsung.
It would make sense to do so since there are several variants and international versions of the Galaxy S, and this is like the head of the Galaxy S family.
But something tells me Samsung will not outs the Epic 4G with a GSM, and I wish to god that I'm wrong OR that Samsung will release it with the exact specs but without the 4G antennae .... which will also be very aweful considering that 4G will be available in the near-future in Australia (and there is proof for it like 3G prices are crashing).
I want my GSM Samsung Epic 4G here in Aust!!!!!
Yea I'm not really sure why people ask if they will get certain phones in Europe. Not that it doesn't happen but certain phones are made exclusive. That's why it's called the epic 4G!
That's why it's different from all the other galaxy s phones. if europe did get this it would be 4gless and just a galaxy s with a keyboard. but i highly doubt because they would of announced this already. would it be cool? sure but i highly doubt. not every phone can be duplicated. it's a reason for every device.
I'd say just give it some time. It should be out.
The Samsung Wave (Bada phone) had a slide out qwerty keyboard about 4-5 months after the candy bar style phone came out.

I'd be really happy if it does come on at&t bands because all of Canadia works on the same bands
that doesnt mean anything.. the stock sgs ii has att bands and just becuase it is going through fcc approval doesnt mean it is att requesting the approval.. could just be samsung getting it approved as it does all its phones.
Either way he can use it just fine, so it's a lot to get excited about
he could use it without fcc's approval...
also engadget was really slow this is friday's news
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_gal...mode_i708_prototype_hit_the_fcc-news-2412.php
what did you think? ffc doesn't work on sundays
Well I for one happy about this.
I held out for waiting for the atrix, but in the end it just wasn't enough for me. I have a captivate and have enjoyed having it rooted and running froyo way before AT&T and sammy got off their ass.
i fully expect the s2 to have all the same bands that the galaxy s1 had, and the omnia hd also had, the same quadband coverage, dont expect anything to change here. because they are the most widely used bands, perfect for an international model.
Oh man, this is getting harder and harder.
Is going to be either SGS2 or iP5.
So difficult.
i still believe S2 will be compatible to all providers, like S1,,
make the base of fight with ip5,,
using tegra2 to ensure the quantity for sale ,, which makes sense.
This was known for a while now, that the Galaxy S 2 wwould work on ATT 3G bands. What is not known is whether ATT will pick up the phone or not.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
They would be fools not to pick it up.
Phones are just bait to get and keep subscribers. The phone should be a great device.
If this is a AT&T only phone, there is no justice in the world.
The international version works on AT&T.
Even if some US Carriers carry it, it will suck in comparison. Look at the Captivate/Vibrant compared to the i9000.
Yeah, that is true.
If AT&T does get they will probably request that sammy retard the phone some how. Like taking away some of the radios or no front facing camera.
I'm hoping they wont do that this time, but they probably will find some way to screw it up.
Agreed! I won't ever buy a AT&T retarded phone again, if there is an international one available I will pay extra for it. Like the Captivate vs i9000.

I completely understand if you guys didn't dig into FCC documents to read what they said, I don't blame you, but just to clarify, the device passed is an 850/1900 ONLY phone, meaning it can only be for AT&T or Canadian carriers.
Other versions will likely be released, but the version that passed FCC is not going to work on other US carriers.

We'll have to see if they strip out features again. FFC is a must, and I don't think they'll strip that out. I think they took that out last time because the network wasn't ready for video calling. They wanted HSPA+ prior to letting people use video calling. Other phones AT&T sells have an FFC now, so I don't think the SGS2 will be any different.
Other than that, what, FM radio and no HSUPA? AT&T SAYS they are going to start rolling out HSUPA, we'll see, if not I'm sure a radio swap with an international version will work again. And FM radio would be a nice addition, but I certainly won't make a decision on a phone over it. I can always use TuneIn and iheartradio if I really want to listen to my ****ty local stations. Oh, and a flash on the camera. That one actually may sway my decision to buy it if they don't include a flash. That was one of the stupidest things I've seen, but I found that I don't care about flash for pictures as much as I do for a flashlight. Most cell phone pictures taken with flash look like crap anyway.
I would go for an international version if they were at least somewhat reasonable in price, but I'm not paying $700-800+ USD for an international version.
Anyway, I hope they will hurry up. I have an upgrade that I'm itching to use!

Because I don't want to spend that much on a phone right now. I just bought an iPad 2 as my latest toy, so I have to limit myself. Depending on the cost on AT&T, I'm up for upgrade price plus $50 off. If it hits a $200 price point again I can probably get it for $150. Make up your mind samsung! Tmobile

OK, there's always an international galaxy s (I,II) and variants both regional, and united-states.
There's gonna be 3 variants AT&T Attain, Verizon Function and Sprint Within that seem to share the same form-factor.. though both Verizon and Sprint are cdma... whilst AT&T is gsm.. then there's no mobile announced for T-mobile..
http://androidcommunity.com/us-gala...-verizon-function-and-sprint-within-20110516/
Now we have this super-mega-variant for T-mobile.
"Samsung Hercules"
http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/17/unannounced-samsung-hercules-headed-to-t-mobile-bearing-godli/
4.5-inch 480 x 800 Super AMOLED Plus display
Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)
NFC support, though compatibility with the forthcoming ISIS mobile payment standard is “to be determined”
Category 24 HSDPA (42Mbps) and Category 6 HSUPA (5.76Mbps) for extremely fast HSPA+ support — faster than any HSPA+ phone currently sold in the US
AWS plus 850 / 1900MHz compatibility for support on AT&T’s “4G” network if the merger succeeds
Preliminary measurements place it at 5.16 x 2.76 x 0.37 inches — within a few hundredths of an inch of the Infuse
16GB internal ROM, 1GB internal RAM, external microSD up to 32GB
Here’s where it outdoes the Infuse: it’s quoted with a Qualcomm 1.2GHz dual-core APQ8060 application processor, which is extraordinarily unusual for a Samsung — particularly considering the availability of Samsung’s own multi-core Exynos line; it’s paired with an MDM8220 modem processor
8 megapixel primary camera with flash and 1080p video capture, secondary front-facing camera
Like the Galaxy S II, the Hercules won’t have a dedicated HDMI port — it’ll move high-def video over Micro USB using MHL

Total outcome? International nfc-less model, 3 variants with possibly different software due to radio cdma/gsm, and one super-variant for t-mobile compatible with AT&T but with a different chipset, and a bigger screen!

Why can't samsung keep it simple, and have a mix cdma/gsm/lte chip with different design. Not different chipsets, software, and what not.. this is starting to look like a nightmare in terms of porting roms.
I know the answer. Carriers want their own exclusive phone.
Samsung should just say "nah". There's only a need for ONE phone, the SGS2. None of this Captivate/vibrant/Fascinate/blah naming. An SGS2. That is all.
Unfortunately, money tends to speak for these sorts of things, so I doubt this will change. Networks enjoy crippling capable handsets, taking 16GB internal storage, and making it 2GB, so they can sell more SD cards to clients who don't know about shopping around and Amazon...
Words fail me sometimes with Samsung...
WFT!!
I can't understand why Samsung does not say "take it or leave it". It's not a small company and I am pretty sure none of the US carriers could even dream of matching the financial muscle of Sammy (you can forget about the Samsung conglumerate, just talking about Samsung electronics). It's time for Sammy to flex it's muscle.
The problem is US networks are retarded and built not to work like the rest of the world. Verizon and Sprint use CDMA, so the Int'l. SGS2 won't work on them, hence the Function and Within. The other 2 GSM networks have different frequencies, so Sammy has 2 make 2 different phones for those 2 too. It's not a "take it or leave it" issue because even if they "took it" the phone wouldn't work properly anyway
Actually the Galaxy S2 works on ATT without any need to change anything....I'm using it now.
I think ATT should get the Galaxy S 2 before any other U.S. carrier because there is less work needed to be done to it to please ATT's customers......pleasing ATT is another story.

This is indeed true, about the market cap, 184 for AT&T vs 132 for Samsung. Wait, it is Billions vs Trillions. Oh, USD vs Won. Duh
So $184B vs $121B , AT&T wins
T-Mobile probably requested something crazy good like this "Hercules" as a marketing tactic. Similar to their new program of trading in old phones, no matter who the service providor of the phone is, for new phones and upgrades with T-Mobile. All in an attempt to bring back some of the declining numbers to T-Mobile.
My guess is they (T-Mo) particularly asked for an outragiously nice phone like the Hercules, also in an attempt to grab a bunch of people back to T-Mo. Chances are, maybe they're trying to see if they can prove they can keep or grow their numbers, then they may not sell out to AT&T..?
All this is theory of course. But why else would T-Mo ask for such a beast of a phone if it was a certainty that they were being bought out? This could possibly be T-Mobile's final stand to prove themselves before giving up.
I mean cmon, if I wasnt with T-mo, I'd freaking switch for a phone like this! blazing internet, awesome customer service, and the absolute best phone on the market! Who wouldnt want that??
lol..lets just hope that the battery capacity is higher than the SGS2!
This is precisely why I went with ever SGS2 on AT&T's network over waiting for a crippled version that gets no updates, because of carrier approval on top of Samsungs customizations.

Samsung Electronics, which is their phone division. The whole company, Samsung, has to make MUCH more money. You would have to look up all their divisions and add all the money up.

Actually At&t has a higher market capital than Samsung.
Maybe even double.

...you certainty don't know Samsung then. Samsung is much bigger than just a mobile phone company.

Well to be honest, AT&T isnt just a cell providor either. Going by gross revenue, AT&T is one of the largest. And yes, it is above Samsung. Dont get me wrong, Samsung is large, but AT&T has their hands in waayyyy too many things.
Like for instance, the whole reason why the T-Mobile and AT&T merger might actually get approved (even though it is completely and obviously a monopoly over GSM phone service in the US). Alot of the representatives in the FCC were funded for their campaigns by AT&T.
AT&T is very powerful and we all know how many companies they've swallowed up...
like for instance SBC, TCI, Western Electric, Audion, NCR corp, McCaw Communications, Alascom, Media One, Olivetti and Oracle Research, IBM's Global Network division, Bell Systems (22 separate companies), and so on.
JD Power and Associates rated AT&T the leading cable tv, internet, and voip providor for the past 4 years straight since starting "U-Verse" which started 4 years ago.
Samsung hasnt done anything close to that.
AT&T is just money hungry, monopoly loving bastards haha.

No SGS2 for Verizon

Confirmed by a VZW spokesperson...

So the T-Mobile version's a Celox in drag and AT&T's will most likely have a keyboard. The only one remotely resembling the original is Sprint's. Looks like the U.S. carriers once again tortured a phone with their customization.
Stupid Verizon... and it looks like I'll pick up an unlocked international version. Stupid US carriers. How retarded can they be?
This is why I plan to use my yearly upgrades on iPhones & re-sale for profit while buying original international models.
Look for the ATT ROAD MAP that was just put out. ATT is getting two sgs2s. One with keyboard and one that is normal touchscreen and basically looks like the one in the video that Samsung just released (like sprints front what I have read). I too think it is pretty dumb of Verizon but all the articles are guessing it is because they will get the Nexus Prime in October. Also coming from an ATT captivate owner I would ALMOST BET on it that Apple has something to do with it. Look how the Captivate (and all the us carriers) dumbed down the sgs1's compared to the SGS international versions. I always figured that since ATT had exclusive rights for the iphony when the captivate came out that it was dumbed down or would have been (is still in my opinion) better than the iphony 3 or whatever it was at the time and possibly bit a bigger chunk out of apple at the time. I am just glad ATT is getting a sgs2 normal looking one. As far as the phones that have been kind of confirmed everyone thought it was not going to T-Mobile since there was 3 versions of it. But since Verizon chose not to does that mean the T-Mobile is actually getting one or just the 4.5" somewhat version of sgs2?

Massively disappointed, looks like I will have to go to the dark side with the Droid Bionic now.
