I really want an android tablet. I dont need it to have cellular access because I'm never without my phone and I have wifi tether. I would like it to have a strong development community. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg. Any suggestions on the best wifi tab for the money? I was actually thinking of a nook color, since honeycomb has already been ported over, but I don't know what the long-term future for that is. Thoughts?
I have a nook its working out pretty well for me. But as investment down the long road most likely not.
I am hoping Google drops a nexus tablet so I can just have that bought outright

You have to determine your price range and what do you want out of the tablet. Me personally, I am going to get the Xoom WiFi edition. It's $600 BUT it's one hell of a tablet. The 3G/4G Xoom is $800. The ONLY difference between the WiFi version and the 3G/4G version is the cell radio. The specs are below.

Currently have an iPad, I'm probably going to just get the iPad 2 when it comes out. I'll get an android tab after they've been around for a while and we start to see some nice games for them.
I think the previous poster meant to say elocity a7 tablet. I'm considering the Xoom, Samsung Tab 10.1 or whatever catches my eye by the end up May. I think the dev community will be better with Xoom.

Xoom will be worth the money imo, and there is also the LG G-Slate http://www.phonenews.com/sprint-nixing-10-premium-data-fee-15767/
Id say dont settle for anything less than dual core and Android 3.0...it will be worth the money and the wait. If money is > longevity...than current smasung tabs will probably be available for much less when newer ones arive.
Wait so if I am correct that I saw a xoom wifi only for 600?

I honestly thought about an ipad, but I am just completely in love with android. As far as honeycomb, I know there will be a port for just about everything. Dual core is a good call. Are any of the archos tabs worth a damn? they're inexpensive ...

honestly, i'd get an ipad 2 (when it comes out). that way you could have the best of both worlds. steve makes a pretty good tablet. just jailbreak, install some tweaks, and enjoy.
If I wanted an ipad 2 I would have an ipad 1. I hate apple and don't believe their hardware ia any better than mediocre. "People don't want to know how their device works, they just want it to work. That's why apple exists."

why would you want honeycomb on a cellphone? Honeycomb is geared towards 7" plus displays like netbooks, tablets, and in the very near future 7 inch doubledin car stereo systems, yup you heard me right 7 inch touchscreen stereo systems with honeycomb will be coming out soon, my guess 2012 or 2013, currently trying to hack a chinese stereo system with windows ce on it, it has a 800 mhz processor and a separtate 500 mhz gpu processor, trying to hack into it now. I know the hardware can support honeycomb.

Yea, I know usually for 7" but I actually feel that the Vibrant's screen is big enough for Honeycomb...I mean its not that that much smaller the the Galaxy Tab 7".

Get a Nook Color. CM7 nightlies are available now and the HC isn't bad (not great either, but they're working on it).
I'd be happy with GB on the Vibrant. I have it on my work phone (G2).

Which one do you think is better, and why? I'm leaning towards the HTC because I'm a sucker for HTC Sense. Any chance Sense will be ported to The Xoom? Any word on the Wifi-Only pricing? I heard it will be about $640 for the 32GB, anyone know if that's true? Sorry if I'm asking too many questions.

Pretty unlikely that the Xoom will get Sense, that hasn't really been ported to any device other than HTC's. With the xoom you get stock google experience, so it gets updated first, Flyer when HTC chooses. I have heard that the Xoom wifi will be $540 at Sam's Club, but just a rumor so who knows for sure? Not us... I love my Xoom, yes it has some issues but I feel those will be addressed in a couple weeks with the first update.

First off, HTC sense CAN get ported and has gotten ported to devices other than HTC products. Also HTC is doing away with dual core and using a single core 1.5 ghz chip. And they aren't touching gingerbread and using a heavily modified 2.2.3 or some ****. I'm taking a **** right now

The Flyer is actually running a modified 2.3 build with a tablet-specific version of Sense.
Sense eventually will come to the Xoom via some kinda port, but HTC has to release a tablet with 3.0 and Sense first. They have yet to even build Sense for 3.0 so it won't necessarily be available at the moment...
OP, these aren't really comparable imho. The Flyer is only 7" and runs 2.3 like I said and has a single core 1.5ghz processor, and the Xoom is 10" with 3.0 and running a dual core 1ghz processor. It really comes down to which size you prefer and how important 3.0 is to you.
Also, based on some rumors, the Flyer is not going to be much cheaper than the Xoom, which is kinda disappointing considering its only 7" and has a single-core processor.
I thought flyer had gingerbread -> honeycomb - not Froyo - so 2.3.3 not 2.2.3...?
Also I thought about this same question myself....
I came to the conclusion that:
1) I am using the tablet 99% of the time at home (so a bigger screen would be better, aka Xoom 10" over Flyer 7"
2) I won't be needing a 3g/data bundle as if I do need to then I'll use my phone - either Xoom or Flyer would be ok here.
3) I'm not overly bothered by note-taking or playing around with the pen - don't get me wrong, its an amazing feature if it works well as expected - but it's not that important to me (Xoom)
If I was out and about and wanting to make some quick notes in a meeting or such - then the Flyer would win in my opinion.
As I am going to be using it as a home-device in place of a laptop probably - then the Xoom with its larger screen wins it for me.

This is correct. Coming out with 2.3 + Tablet Sense. But I'm unsure on its upgrade path to 3.0.
Pretty sure HTC have said they'll be upgrading the Flyer to Honeycomb but they haven't given a date. Since they first need to port Sense to it, it might be a while.
Flyer looks like a good product but I'm not a fan of the 7th inch form factor.

I recall them saying that too.
Realistically Honeycomb will probably be at least 3 months from Xoom release - that seems to be a pretty much standard release time giving the last few releases...
that may be because google want their prime device to stand out among the rest for awhile - or because it takes people around 3 months to develop their sense/touchwiz/blur/whatever and test with multiple devices before roll out
I wouldn't by a flyer because it only has a single core cpu, and there's bound to be loads of heavier apps and widgets released that required a bit more steam when fitted to a tablet.
The Galaxy Tab 10 spec looks good. And the Galaxy Tab 7 is a bloody good tablet, so it has some pedigree.

I get what you're saying. There will, hopefully, be a lot of apps which will be optimised for a dual core processor. But a 1.5ghz single core is by no means a slouch. Imagine overclocking this to even 1.8ghz... nice!

I just like the way its setup, thats all. First Android I ever used was the HTC Hero running Eclair, I think. Does anyone know what kind of screen the XOOM has? I really liked the vibrant colors that HTCs seem to have. What are they? OMLEDs?
That's another reason I like Sense, everything looked so vibrant and colorful. When I look at pictures of the Xoom's homescreen, it looks dull and boring.
I just wanted to ask you guys my fellow Epic owners if any of you own an Android tablet and from a development standpoint which one would you go with? Are there any Epic devs that do any tablet custom work?

I had a sylvania tablet for the the longest and manged to get Google Market and froyo on it (unless you had one, you know that was a GREAT feat!) and I was happy with it...unfortunately, circumstances forced me to sell it and when I did he had just gotten rid of his 7' Galaxy Tab, telling me that the simplest tilt would make it change orientation quickly. I was surprised that he chucked it for a sylvania. I plan on either getting a Color Nook next, or try to find a sale on an Acer a500.
Also:ironically, 3 weeks after I sold the Sylvania Tablet, the source code was finally released for it, which means development for it is soon to rise *sigh* real bad time, I guess...
We bought a bunch of sgtabs at work. Love mine from a practical standpoint, but the dev world is a bit behind. I don't think its lacking much, just a reliable cwm and then a complete set of stock files (modem, kernel, rom) and things will be moving. I expect the source will eventually come out. I hear that's what's lacking in the kernel dev dept. Personally I like samsung. When the 4g 10.1 is released I plan on getting that one. Despite the slow update releases, you have to admit, the galaxy s line rocks.

This tablet doesn't appear to be worth the $400 I paid for it. The tablet itself is just boring and laggy, a ton of incompatible apps and games (due to both the tab and devs)... I mean damn, this tablet is a real disappointment. What reason do I have for justifying this tab s purchase? On top of all that, Samsung really ****ed up in the tablet area.

In the entire rant above you never once mentioned anything specific that: 1) you want to do, 2) you can't do. I use mine for streaming video from Plex and PlayOn (Hulu Plus, HBO GO) over Wi-Fi and 3G, download and watch HD movies from Google Play, read books and magazines, catch up on the news through dedicated apps and the browser, control my Google TV's with the remote app, use it navigate all over the world with CoPilot, etc., etc. That doesn't seem boring to me. Of course a newer tablet with a Teg3 processor is going to be faster. But for doing what I described above the G-Tab is more than capable. And when the ICS update is released in a couple of weeks it'll get a lot smoother too. Look at it this way, with all the tablets in the world for Apple to try and get banned they picked the G-Tab. Kind of flattering actually.
Seriously; give me some reasons why I. Shouldn't trash this cheap and. Get something better.

Personally, I and I'm assuming others could care less what you do better you convince you to stay with a device you're clearly unhappy with.

Really? I'm a troll because I dislike this piece of **** tablet? I've been an Android user since 2008, since the dawn of the G1, but I'm a troll for disliking a product? Kill yourself. The other Android users are right; Samsung fanboys are some of the most defensive, stuck up people ever. Just because I'm a long time Android user doesn't mean I'm afraid to call out a ****ty product when I use one.

It's not exactly about what it can and can't do, it's how it does it. Biggest problem I'm having with this is lag, the lag is ridiculous, and it's pretty funny because a lag free experience was what nVidia boasted about at the debut of Tegra 2.

Running CM9 right now (I LOVE Aokp on my Sensation, myTouch, Galaxy Nexus but AOKP is a bit odd on the tab, and crashy). Some apps are smooth, some are laggy as ****. egl drivers on this really suck though, it could be a lot better. Gonna wait and see how good (or how bad) ICS runs with Samsung's official drivers. If it's still awful then I'm just gonna get rid of this crap and go for a Nexus 7. ASUS actually does **** right and gets it right. That's why Google made them the official Nexus 7 manufacturer, and that's one of Google's best choices ever.
I wouldn't pay 400 for the GT today. A year ago, it was well worth it. If your problem is with apps, get the the iPad. If it's speed, get the Transformer Infinity or the Nexus 7. Simple.

I have no problem with apps at all, Google Play is amazing annd has a great selection of apps. But this tablet can't run most apps without lag, and it's ridiculous. iOS is an extremely boring and disappointing OS so any of those iCrap devices can go dig a hole and die in it. I want the Transformer Pad Infinity, but with $500+ vs $199 (and tax, shipping), with the only significant different being screen resolution... The Nexus 7 is hard to pass up. Sadly my laptop is ****ting out so I might have to pass up on the Nexus 7 for now and get a new laptop, but God damn.... You really have no idea how much I want that Nexus 7.
I'm still running HC 3.2 cause I want the camera but task650 has done a great job. I don't see any lag but some apps don't work which is a bummer, but I still don't think its a waste.
Lag has always been an issue but I've always just lived with it hoping for ICS to come out and save the day. Still waiting (have the verizon tablet and paying for mobile data so no, CM9 is not in the cards for me). Now having a One X in hand for my phone makes the GT feel even more long in the tooth but until there's another android based LTE tablet out there to jump to with better performance I'll stick it out with what I've got.
Depending on when you bought this, yes. I got this the first day it came out and for what it was, it was awesome. It was one of the first Android tabs and I've watched Android's tablet ecosystem grow. If you've passed this recently, there are way better options. I myself got a nexus 7, but there are lots of praise for the Asus infinity and people with their prime are generally happy with it. Good luck and see if you can get an exchange as the Samsung tab definitely isn't worth 400 anymore

Its definitely not the fastest thing these days but I use it non stop and it runs games, music, movies, etc. just fine for me so I have no complaints. Official ICS would be cool though.

Hey I am an Android user since G1 too and I am looking from the same perspective.
Here is what I am going to do with this crappy Tab:
I am not going to trash it but I will keep it and hate it.
This will help me remember not to get any heavily customized interface (Touchwiz, sense ... etc) device in the future and waiting 1 year for an update then getting dropped in the second update because my device cannot handle it because of the customization.
Moral: Keep it simple and light.
Can not say install CM instead, as it is not an valid alternative. Don't take me wrong but my level of reliability I am looking for is just higher than that.

True, GalaxyTask ROMs are actually the best ROMs here, which I find disappointing because ICS is a lot lighter than Honeycomb ever was. Even so, apps still lag, and every browser I use crashes.

I have a bad feeling ICS won't save the day either. I have an even worse feeling we'll just be getting ICS after Jellybean is released.

Nexus 7 is calling your name too
Its a shame your experience is so poor with this tab. I love the galaxy tab 10.1, running honeycomb 3.2. I luckily don't experience this lag and never have. I have the US model bought on first release a year ago and I still love it today. Use it for everything these days. Music, movies, streaming all from my WD Live hub, connect to my smart tv via HDMI or wifi direct. My mate bought the galaxy tab 2 10.1 yesterday and running them side by side the tab 2 was even smoother ics is an improvement but with touchwiz looks the same as honeycomb tbh.
Maybe you should take your tab back for a refund and do more research and see if there is something more suited to your needs.
