SGS2 bubble of problems just got burst on me! - Galaxy S II General

Hi, I got the SGS2 last week from three UK as an upgrade! It was all well and good. Just yesterday I updated firmware from KIES (from KE1 to KF4). Then I used chainfire's kernel to root it and then again installed stock kF4 kernel to remove yellow triangle at boot. Then I successfully Unlocked the phone and now can use any SIM.
Just today it all started. Not a single call lasting for more than 10-20 seconds. I know I have read it elsewhere as well and then I am posting here. Just when a single signal BAR GOES DOWN, the stop hearing the other side and the call ends. I confirm that the internet has no problems till now but sometimes it is a bit slow. So What I did was to put the same SIM in my old SGS, it worked fine then started to have occasional call drops. As the phone is unlocked, I tried vodafone and O2 and they worked well, though occasional call drops. (THE SIGNAL BAR IS FULL OR ALMOST FULL) so it's an area of good network coverage.
I called three, they booked me in for returns, I have rooted phone and dont have JIG, so I wont send until I've done that. Is there any other way I can tackle this? like flashing KE1 modem on this firmware? or flashing a sim-free firmware??
Please help guys!! I hope I have made things as clear as possible.
EDIT:Now I cannot even login to google services, it states (network error) although all other things are working perfectly as wifi is connected

Just flashed:
PDA: I9100XWKF3
PHONE:I9100XXKE7
CSC: I9100XEUKD1
Call dropping is the same with the same sim, when i changed the sim, now it is occuring 50-60% rather than the 100%.
But in the battery info, time without signal is still 100% after going through the forums, I tried turning airplane mode ON and OFF and also checked setting>about phone>status, it helped drop the time without signal to 80%, the longer I open it the better it gets, but this aint no solution

Phone hangs sporadic after calls (2.2 only)

Hey dear devs,
so ive got a little problem. Im a flashjunkie and tried all the different firmwares. All eclair firmwares JM1/3/5/8/9 went fine for me and i had no problems, but since the first froyo (JPC) ive tested, ive got a little problem with froyo.
First some things about me and my phone. I live in germany, my provider is o2, and i also bought a brandet o2-phone. The first day i got it, i flashed to JM5 and unbrandet it, but now to my problem:
My phone hangs somtimes and very sporadic (1-2 times a week) normally after longer calls >10 minutes.
But let me explain a little deeper. It first appears with JPC (my first froyo).
Im doing a longer call and when i finish i take the phone of my ear and have a look an the display to end the call. But i cant click the hangup button. The green listener symbol in the upper left corner is there and blinking. The only thing i can do is to press the menu-button to get back to my homescreen. All is working fine then, but i cant do or recieve any calls because the upper-left green listener symbol is still there and blinking.
When i try to go to flightmode the phone normally hangs completely, only a reboot is fixing the problem. I also had the prob one time within a call. I was on the phone and suddenly my partner was gone.. i didnt hear anything and he also didnt hear anything. Same symptoms: green listener symbol blinking, and when trying to switch to flight mode, the phone crashes. Only reboot is working.
This problem appears in ALL froyo firmwares i tested (JPC, JPK, JPM, JPO), and yes a wiped, i cleared all caches, i reflashed all the firmwares, flashed with kies, flashed with odin (with and without repartition). So i did all the stuff we all used to do to get this problem fixed...
I first thought it was a failure of the beta-firwares, but also the JPO has the problem. There is one thing that might have to do with it... I live a little bit outside of the town and in my house i have a low signal. The problem appears in 9 of 10 cases in the house until now. That might be bad luck, because its very sporadic, and normally i do longer calls only when im at home... But it may also be part of the problem, perhaps because my phone wants to change the to another umts-provider, that has a better signal?
I also thougt that it may be a sim-problem, because my sim is about 5 years old. But i ordered a brandnew sim from o2 and yesterday i had the failure again. It only appears after or right in the call.
Has anyone experienced same problems? Or can help me find out what problem i have?
Thx for all answers
Cheers, Donald!
hi!
yes, i can second that! i have exactly the same problem with my o2-germany-provided SGS, even though I unbranded it by applying the scandinavian froyo-beta via registry hack. So far I did not find any solution. Sometimes this even happens during rahter short calls of 10-15 min. Too bad
Yes i can confirm the Problem. I'm with O2 Germany too. First I thought it is a Problem with both party's hanging up the same time. But I couldn't reproduce the problem at will...
So, the only thing, we can do at the moment is to wait for official o2 brandet firmware. Does anyone know when it will be released?
Greetz DN
Until now i haven't heard about a release date...
also on jf3!!!
i've got the same problem! but i had this bug already on stock eclair jf3!
so i updated via kies to official jpo ( i also tried jpc, jpm, jp6) and my phone still hangs sometimes. is it possible thats just a strange behavior on sgs with o2 germany?
or is there anybody else (other country or carrier) getting the same issues?
i get this bug every third call (when calling longer than 30 minutes)
....
hmm.. perhaps we found something that causes this o2-bug... There is a discussion in the german forum android-hilfe and there is mentioned that the homezone-indicator signal might be the failure, that you might have enabled.
So what about you? Have you also enabled this feature?
Today i called the O2 hot line and they told me that O2 did not receive the Froyo update from Samsung yet. So they haven't had a chance to test the Froyo release. That mens we have to wait for Samsung to give the update to German carryers for testing. I mean if they encounter the problem too they will fix it since it is a real annoying bug.
Look also at this boards and threads about the same issue:
ht_tp_: / /_ww w._ handy-faq._ de/forum/ samsung_i9000_galaxy_s_forum /174359-probleme_empfang.html (german, translate. google. de may help )
ht_tp_:_//_forum._o2online._de/t5/ Handys-und-Zubeh%C3%B6r/ Galaxy-S-Froyo-o2-WCDMA-massive-Probleme/ m-p/58562#M7640
(remove spaces between first parts of the links, as - unfortunately - I'm not allowed to post links cause of my "newbie" status )
I've got the same issues (hang after/while phonecall, aborted call, no net service and so on..)
Same problem here!
BUT mine locks up every 30 Minutes!
And I use drei.at (Austrian Provider) NOT O2.
So it seems, that its not a specific Problem within O2 only
Andy
happened to me once...but SGS unbranded with O2 sim...
Hey,
i have the same prob. When the phone lies all the night and some1 wants to call me at the next morning i'm not reachable. every morning. 100%
now i installed the i9000xxjm3 modem. lets see if it fix the prob;-)

Hi,
there is finally news on that.
O2 meanwhile confirmed the issue to be connected to the homezone display in the Froyo firmwares.
They propose a solution where they delete the homezone data from the SIM card without affecting the homezone functionality as such. Just the homezone icon will not be displayed anymore.
So the assumption it has something to do with the O2 homezone became true.
Here is the thread (sorry, its German) in the official O2 forum:
http://forum.o2online.de/t5/Geräte-...-o2-WCDMA-massive-Probleme/td-p/45714/page/27
I just wonder if some clever developer here could even remove the homezone icon functionality out of the firmware. I somehow do not trust O2 to come up with their solution quickly enough...
Thanks
Andi

No network after installing CM7.1

HI ALL, Im pretty new here. after so many tries finally i was able to install cm7.1 on my defy. but im facing some issues. before the installation i forgot to take a back up of the existing ROM so if i have to go back to the previous ROM how to do that? and also there is no network coverage after the installation. please please anybody help!!!!!!
Have a vibrant myself but I'm helping a buddy get cm7 on his defy and after flashing didn't have a network signal. I looked at the cm7 install guide and it referenced a defy base band switcher app for better coverage. Had him try that and he got his data connection back. Might want to look into it or read the guide.

If your previous ROM was stock that came with your phone, flash the corresponding SBF file from the sticky on the Dev section to go back to stock. If it was some other custom ROM, wipe data/factory reset in CWM and flash the old ROM. Make backup of your apps using Titanium Backup if you want.
For CM7 network issues, choose the correct baseband from Defy Baseband Switcher. For India, pick anything that is 900/2100MHz...
Also, make sure you have read as many guides and First Posts on important threads as you can. Here is a collection of good threads you can read for these questions, and more that you might get later:

Hello! Noob here as well.
I installed CM7.1 stable on my Defy (running 2.2.2 foryo) 2 days ago.
All went well, except that network connection is lost after a couple of minutes after boot. Sometimes it takes an hour or two but I still end up with no connection.
I've googled everything about it in the last days. I played with the Baseband Switcher and although most options in the BB Switcher work right after a reboot, it still looses the signal after a couple of minutes.
One thing I noticed, when the signal is lost, trying to set the "Airplane mode" will fail. If trying to set Airplane ON - the notification icon will not replace the signal icon and will also be unable to set Airplane OFF (since it didn't finish turning ON).
I also noticed that if I force stop the "Dialer" system app, then the Airplane notification ico shows up, but still there's no way to turn it OFF (it's disabled in the menu). After a reboot Airplane can be set OFF and everything works for another small period of time (..until baseband crashes again?).
Hope it makes some sense. I'm quite sure this is not an operator issue or hardware related, since my Defy worked just fine before CM7.1
Also, I am located in Romania, operator is Orange.

I have the same issue, except that it is much rarer (ranging from every other day, to even a month between such incidents). It can also be triggered sometimes when I turn off Wi-Fi and the device tries to regain mobile data connection (not sure if it matters, but I set the network mode to 2G on my phone). The battery drain is increased if this occurs without the user noticing - the phone seems to search in vain for the signal.
Using the latest SEA baseband on M1 (Singapore).

I get this problem too. Happens every so often when I'm at work. I've always put it down to a bad signal where I work but as I always turn the wifi of before leaving home it could be down to that. If anyone has any solutions it would be great
Ok, a little update on this:
At the office now, further playing with the Baseband Switcher, I ended up selecting "Italia RT 2.51.1" which has the same 900/2100 freq that my operator requires and it seems to work. Even getting 3G.
If "2.51.1" is some sort of protocol version, then all the other options I've tried were either 4.x or 3.x or even 2.21.x ..and none of them worked for more then 30 minutes.
Also, not sure if signal strength has something to do with this because I did a test, going to the basement of my office in order to loose signal, then back up and it worked - got the signal back, without reboot or anything.
Also, I would really appreciate if someone could explain in a few words what those version numbers mean (ex: "Italia RT 2.51.1"), as I know nothing about gsm bands and protocols.
UPDATE: Back home, lost signal again, after a whole day without any problems. Funny.
UPDATE 2:
So after much google searching and trying literally every option in the Baseband Switcher, I switched my SIM card with a friend's SIM and guess what.. IT WORKED! Even more, when I inserted my original SIM into the other phone after a few minutes it lost signal, too! It was a faulty SIM, that has just started to "die".
Conclusion:
- Keep playing with that Baseband Switcher until you get something that works for you.
-Make sure your SIM is working properly in other phones, otherwise ask your operator to replace it.
Thanks and hope this helps.

Not really. As long as you have a working Baseband selected (with correct frequencies) I don't think it matters.
But overall CM7.1 has better battery efficiency then stock ROMs, or at least that's what I felt.
update:
Well, I had a play with the baseband switcher, realising i was on 'international'. I switched to uk t-mobile and from there it seemed to work much better. A slight blip at work today (think it's a bit of a signal black-spot though) but restarted and it seems fine again. I've also just realised it's gone 37hrs since its last charge too
Strangely my other problem, the backlighting on the soft-keys not working, fixed itself at the same time. dunno if these two things are linked or not?
i use the CEE one.

[Q] S4 - disconnecting from network and not reconnecting again

Hi all,
Regular reader but hardly ever post!
I have a Galaxy S4 (GT-I9505) - with Android 4.4.2. Unrooted.
Purchased and used in Singapore on the Starhub network since around October 2013. Everything was working fine until approx Feb or March when the latest Android version, 4.4.2 got rolled out.
Ever since then I am experiencing regular disconnections from the network. But the phone does not re-connect back to the network again, the only fix is to restart the phone.
These disconnections are often once or twice a day, and are very frustrating because if I don't notice it, I may be off the network for hours before noticing it - and are therefore missing out on calls emails etc etc.
This only happened after the Android 4.4.2 got rolled out, so I am pretty confident this is the cause of the problem.
What I tried myself to fix:
- restore APN's back to default state
- Factory reset (both via settings, and via boot screen)
What I have been able to narrow down troubleshooting, is:
- Disconnects seem to only happen when Network Mode is "LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect)"
- If I use network mode "WCDMA/GSM (auto connect)" the disconnections have not happened (yet!)
- When the disconnection does happen in the first mode, I cannot manually change the network mode. The radio buttons are greyed out, and if I try to select "WCDMA/GSM auto connect" the request times out (I forget the exact message - it does respond to the tap but then nothing happens)
So it seems to me this is some sort of software bug/fault introduced with Android 4.4.2 that affects 4G connections.
After that, I have taken it to Samsung for warranty service. I have now had 4 visits to them and they have not been able to fix it yet. This is what they have done so far:
- First visit - factory reset (despite telling them I already did that) - did not fix
- Second visit - checked hardware and replaced mainboard. Did not fix.
- Third visit - checked hardware again and factory reset again. Did not fix.
- Fourth visit - who knows. I think same as visit three but done via a Service Manager instead of staff, Did not fix.
When I first called them back in Feb or March, they said it was a "known Issue' and sugegsted to "wait for a patch". However since visiting them, they said the known issue was only with Note 3's (not with S4's) and replacing the mainboard on the Note 3's fixed the problem. In my case replacing the mainboard - twice - has not fixed it.
I'm getting very annoyed with Samsung who seem to just be trying the same thing each time and are not fixing it. Staying in 3G only mode is a workaround but not an acceptable solution.
Now they've asked me to take if back again - for a 5th time.
Beginning to wish I had never bought the S4, or at least never got Android 4.4.2.
So I thought I would turn to here for help instead, I think you guys and gals probably know more than the Samsung service staff!
Any suggestions?
By the way, I don't run any memory/battery saver apps. I do run one data usage monitoring app that I thought perhaps was conflicting, so I tried not installing it after one of the resets, but the problem continued.

you CAN try other modem flash, but be careful with your warranty.
I do not know about the warranty conditions in your country, but in EU normally 3 unsuccessful repairs = phone refund or replacement.
I would try reflashing stock file or just flash a different modem
Hello, just like you i have been reading the post but never posting because i just came here to learn, nothing to share from this side...sorry.
But i am having the same problem as you. I bought my phone in Switzerland on march 2013 but i live in Uruguay. I was just thrilled with my s4 until the 4.4.2 update came out. My connection keeps on crashing and it doesnt matter if its on 4g or 3g just make me miserable all day. Only the two of us is having this type of problem??
I believe is some kind of issue with the new bootloader i just updated with a patched rom that came for Germany last week (the one with kids mode) the phone work fine for a hours and then crashes, so this update didnt work. I have also flashed very differents official roms and modems but nothin seem to affect the problem.
I have another problem even though my s4 is 4g i cant connect to 4g network, every configuration is fine i just cant connect, any thougths??
Thank you very much.
Sorry for my english.

I should add, I took it in *again* to Samsung, to the Service Manager. Said they would replace the antenna and try that, which they did.
Still have the same problem though.
Not sure who to believe, Samsung are starting to run out of ideas and starting to say it may be a network issue. But if the network is down, then the phone should automatically reconnect once the network is back available again. And it doesn't.
I'm convinced it's a bug introduced with KitKat, as the problem only started then, but of course I cannot prove it...

Sounds very similar to my problem, that it just started with Kitkat only. I'm sure it can't be just us two having this problem! I don't have anything special or different installed on my phone, and it's too suspicious that it was working fine, 100% perfectly until the KitKat software came out...

I know it just cant be the two of us from such diferent places in the world but, i just cant find any similar in any post or google. It has been almost 3 months from the update an me using another phone...
Well I thought I would post again to close the loop.
After Samsung tried 5 times to fix my phone, checking hardware and trying to reinstall the OS with no luck, they suggested I try replacing my SIM card.
Surprise surprise, it has fixed the problem with no recurrence yet after a week so far.
I still don't understand how the sim card could be the problem, especially as my phone was working perfectly right up to the Kitkat software update. All I can assume is somehow KitKat either had an incompatibility with my simcard (maybe the new sim is technically slightly different?) or maybe KitKat somehow changed something on the simcard, if that's even possible.
Interestingly, I did contact my telco first, and they told me to contact Samsung. As it turned out, the fix was in the control of the telcom right from day one.
Anyway, so far the problem is resolved, so I thought I would post this here to help anyone that may have this problem.

Trouble with phonecalls

Im in Norway with Telenor subscription. When my Edge+ is LTE/3G/2G (auto connect) Im experiencing several issues:
1. During phonecalls:
- Several times during a call, I can hear the other party, but they can not hear me for several seconds
- The sound become "static", and the phonecall ends.
2. During browsing:
- Page never loads
I cant find any system in these problems, they can happen in places with good reception, or it can be during driving (handsfree).
But all these issues disappear if I set the phone in 2G only, then everything is working perfectly.
What I've tried:
- Reset APN
- Enter APN manually
Any suggestions?
I'm in Norway too but with NetCom. I've used my wife's Telenor SIM card in my Edge+ a few times, not really noticed any difference except for slightly worse sound during calls. Har du ringt Telenor?
I have the same problem. Are you rooted by any chance and have recently installed viper4android?

Hmm... I'm rooted and have Viper. Are you locked to Telenor? If not, try and loan a Netcom/Djuice/Chess/whatever SIM card and test - at least then you should definitely know if it's a device problem or a Telenor problem.
What's your signal strength (Settings>About phone>SIM card status)?

I'm not locked, so I will try a simcard from a different operator. When I have auto connect (LTE, 3g 2g) its constantly shifting between H and H+.
Where I'm now, the signal strengt is stable on -51 dBm 31 asu (Mobile network type EDGE).
Switching to (LTE, 3G, 2G) its -65 dBm 24 asu (Mobile network type LTE)
I can confirm having the same issue #2 as OP in Sweden with Halebop as my carrier, but I only got it once and since then there has been several security updates so I though this issue was one of the things fixed (thanks Samsung for not supplying a proper changelog)
I've just tried with two Telenor SIM cards from my wife and son - both work fine. I'd contact Telenor again and ask for real help... Their customer service is dreadful, that's why I switched to NetCom. Lykke til?

I sometimes have the same problem. Called my service provider (Telenor) today. They are going to send me a new SIM-car, going to se if thats help, and Im going to test with anoter service providers SIM-card
Got the new SIM-card last week.. Same problem, people people can't hear me for 3-10 seconds several times during a phonecall. And data seems to "hang" from time to time. Tried a full factory reset this weekend, so are going to test more next week. And then try a Netcom SIM-card

Just to recap
I returned the phone, and I just got an email from the repairs workshop saying it was a warranty. I dont know if I get a new phone, or if they have repaired the old one.
update: got an email from repairs workshop. They did a network calibration and "reinstalled software". After that they tested the phone OK. I think I will get the phone this week.
I have same problem now, only work on 2g. When on 3g phonecalls hanging all the time.

Same problem here.
In general, the problem is not with the sim card neither phone hardware. The problem usually is with any app that we have installed. To ensure this, switch on the phone in SAFE MODE ( safe mode temporally turns off all user-installed apps). To do that:
1. Switch off the phone
2. Wait at least 1 minute
3.Press and hold volume down button AND the power button
4.Once screen lights up, you can release power button but you should NOT release the volume down button
5. Hold the volume down button until you get the lock screen
You will notice there is a Safe mode icon in bottom left of the lock screen.
Now try to do some phone calls and accurate if the phone call sound is ok. If so, you must uninstall all your apps and discover which one is making this problem

Are you talking seriously?? First of all, I think that finding out that the problem isn't neither from sim card or hardware, is a great new, and now you are asking which app YOU have installed is the problematic?! Lol ok, I suppose to believe you're naïve and I can help a bit...
It is not necessarily only one or the same app for both. Sometimes can be one in conflict with another also installed, one in conflict with the specific firmware of each one or one of several app's with low maturity (you can check it in Google play). I can give you an idea: for instance, periscope app is very problematic in android. But there are a lot of a lot problematic app's. So, as they are so much, there is only a solution if you don't have an idea: uninstall all of them ( phone hard reset preferably) and after this, install one by one manually (not restore any backup cause the errors come again). After each app installation, make some calls to check any call sound problem. When you notice the problem in call sound, the cause is in the last app that you've installed immediately before this. For next time, check with attention after installing any app if any problem appear and never install several app's in the same time to have time to notice problems in a narrow way...
Anyway, you can write here your conclusions

Flashed to Stock Rom, but now have "No Service"

Hello, First time poster, and quite frankly a noob at a lot of this. Here's my issue, i have a at&t Samsung Galaxy S4 that i recieved from a family member that was stuck in a serious boot loop. Only way i could get it to come back was to flash the stock firmware, which worked excellent....now my issue, it seems like about 98% of the time i have the "No Service" icon up top. I got the phone locked through at&t but have since unlocked it to use on Straight talk, as thats what i was originally advised to do by an at&t member (turns out I didnt even need to do this in the first place as ST is just using the at&t towers as a reseller). Unlocked phone, still no service. I had ST previously in a Galaxy S2 in my current location and service was superb, so i know its not a carrier issue. Is it possible that when i flashed stock rom, that i missed something? I checked around and it seems like my modem is updated to the latest setting. When i switched it to ST after about 30 minutes the signal popped up and it seems like as soon as it showed up, it was gone again. Since that point i've been able to make 1 call (I activated ST about 4 days ago) and that call was today, with only 1 bar of reception. Shortly after that call the signal dropped completely again. I am at a complete loss as to why it refuses to get any reception. I was thinking maybe the modem needs to be updated, but the wifi works perfect, and the reception seems to show up (just as 1 little bar) rarely. Anyone have any ideas?
Also, as a little side note, i have done a hard reset a few times and to no avail at fixing the issue. I assume since at certain times i do get the little "1 bar" connection that its not a hardware issue but a software issue thats withholding the phone from reaching potential reception. Any help would work wonders as i've paid the $60 for the BYOP Straight talk.
Which firmware did you flash as the latest firmware is 5.01 and there is no stock rom from att for this version.

If your wifi is working perfect, then modem is not your problem. I have never used Straighttalk but you mentioned that ST is using the AT&T towers so there might be a problem in your simcard registration. Call the ST customer service, tell them your problem and ask them to reprogram your simcard with your phone IMEI. See that would solve your problem.
