[Q] Skype with video for Honeycomb - Acer Iconia A500

Skype with video chat is not available for Honecomb tablets yet. It is available for only select android phones but people have found ways to make it work with other non supported phones e.g with Galaxy S.
Can someone do the same for our ACer iconia?

I too would like this app. Anyone know how?

yeah only way I've found to video chat with someone is with GTalk.
Thought Skype would work but no luck

Anybody want to join and create one?
I got the this source code from this project here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153285
I have no experience with Android but I started too look the code yesterday.

I have been using an APP called "Seen Video Calls For FaceBook"

There's lots of different apps for video calls on Android, many that work on Android. They're pretty much ALL totally useless as they require the person on the other end to be using the same app.
Android BADLY needs not only proper Skype support, but also needs MSN video chat support, and possibly also ICQ (though that's more used in Eastern Europe AFAIK).
For me, I need MSN video chat over everything else, as that's the network all my friends use.

Steam Community App?

I am probably not the only one who uses and loves Steam (Digital Distribution service from Valve), So I was wondering if its at all possible to get a form of Steam Community working on the Rhodium or any phone for that sort?
I know Steam uses a different type of networking/coding than something like WLM or Skype or whatnot, so it may be a little more difficult or even impossible at this time (Steam community has to validate your Steam account and then provide you with your friends list and the rest of the community stuff).
Its just that I use Steam ALOT more than I ever use MSN or anything else. All my friends are on Steam and I literally have it on 24/7, would be really wicked to have an app to access my friends list and chat to them on my phone.
+1 for seeing if this is even possible.
Well, it's not a steam community app. But I wrote an application that displays your team fortress 2 statistics. You might want to check it out if you play team fortress 2 (http://www.undefine.nl/index.php?op...tf2-stats-eng&catid=34:applications&Itemid=67).
I looked into a steam community app a while back, getting the list of friends is possibile if I remember correctly, but chatting and the other stuff is impossible for now I think. At least without help (API) from valve. The connection they use for their chat client and other stuff is encrypted and as far as I know that makes it pretty hard to create a custom application that can work on it.

Any hope to use android for business ??

Hi,
I am in a situation where I really wonder how I will be able to use my Samsung ( or any other android phone) to work ...
I have the feeling that for everything else I will be able to forget the iphone ( I am waiting for some app on android market for aussie users but it's coming soon) and for many features it will be way better than the iphone ( music without itune, video and game on this awesome screen ....)
Regarding the business I need to be able to do something simple : read a mail and reply/forward it
For the moment I have not been able to do so completely.
For instance, if there is a screenshot embedded in the mail, when I reply or forward the mail my apps will either
*put the image as attachment ( the best case)
*let an empty box and my screenshot will not be anmore in the mail
*create an unreadable mail with xml node everywhere
*put the whole mail into an attachment.
Even for the display of the mail receveid only few app will display the screenshot without changing it into an attachment ( it can be annoying if there are several screenshot with text around in the original mail....)
For the moment I have tested the stock samsung app, HTC work mail 1.00.024, K-9 , touchdown, HTC on froyo stock app ...
Do you have any idea if Android will be one day able to do what windows and apple do for years ??
I thought Froyo would be the answer but I am less and less confident on this ...
PS : I knew when I bought the Samsung that the android 2.1 was not supporting exchange but I thought froyo would and that iterce app would also
PPS : here is an example of what my mail looks like when forward with android app :
<html xmlns:v="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" xmlns:w="urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:word" xmlns:x="urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:excel" xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeowerpoint" xmlns:a="urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:access" xmlns:dt="uuid:C2F41010-65B3-11d1-A29F-00AA00C14882" xmlns:s="uuid:BDC6E3F0-6DA3-11d1-A2A3-00AA00C14882" xmlns:rs="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:rowset" xmlns:z="#RowsetSchema" xmlns:b="urn:schemas-microsoft-
and of course all the text around the screenshot has disappeared
Now my colleague is using Froyo on the Desire and he is still not able to do what I want.
Samsung (the conglomerate) is converting their entire mobile infrastructure to include android powered (specifically the Galaxy S) devices. I'm not sure if the proprietary apps can be ported/moved to other phones or companies but it seems to show that there is alot of confidence in using android for businesses.
Things it will include from what i gather are:
VPN to corporate network.
Access to corporate mail (POP?) from wifi and HSPUDA (secured connection licensed from mobile provider).
what's wrong with installing 3rd party software to connect to outlook/exchange ?
Android doesn't have out of the box support for exchange yet, if that is what you are looking for.
The idea of Android is open source, and a big wide market for all programmers to make some profit by release software that will fill the gap, to gather whatever the people needs.

I am not sure you have read my post correctly ?
I have nothing against installing a 3rd party app that's why I said that I hoped that a 3rd party app would support exchange entirely... but there is no 3rd party app which does the job as the iphone !!!
That's why I tested so many different app
Now one moretime when you say : doesn't support yet ... did you read my post ??
I have tested Froyo and it 's just as bad as android 2.1
So now I have to wait maybe android 3.0 for a potential spport of exchange, is that what you meant ??

WAV File bug in Froyo unacceptable!!!!

FYI: Froyo will not play wav files... worked in 2.1, bug in 2.2.
Why does it seem I'm the only one who cares about this... I know I'm not the only guy who uses Cisco's unity messaging or vonage???
Anyone out there have a free work around or know where in the 2.2 source this is screwed up? On principle I refuse to pay $3 for a market app (remote wave) just for functionality that should be built into the stock OS.
If you care, star this:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4875
i care
I am also frustrated with this as well. Same thing, I have voicemails recorded as wave files in the email. Now I can't listen to them. So, do we form some sort of club for this or something? But I also have problems with the email and our Scalix client at work which I had to buy third party software to fix. I also miss voice command with windows mobile because voice dialer is absolutely worthless. Nobody seems to care about that either. What are ya going to do...
I'm also having issuse after the upgrade with wav. file. Before Froyo I was able to listen to my vonage voice mail in my email on my phone and now I can't do so anymore. Why would they disable such a playback file format. I'm thinking they rush Froyo out to soon before covering all grounds with it's use and performance.
I was never able to play wav files from voicemails on my company's system with 2.1 or 2.2 but I downloaded remote wave and it works well. It's not free, I think it cost a buck or two but well worth it. It's simple however the only thing lacking is a seek or rewind feature, but hope that helps..
Yep... maybe cyanogen can find the bug in source and fix it in CM6? Here's to hoping anyway.

[Q] first impression, Qs about Acer A501

Hello folks,
My father-in-law showed up to visit with an Acer A501 in hand. He was challenged in getting it to work according to his needs, so I offered to take a look...
His "needs":
Google Voice via WiFi for "telephone" operations
Skype video conferencing (with front-facing cam)
Light Email usage
Netflix / Pandora
I was baffled that:
Google Voice (and various other things I expected to see) were missing from Market
Skype installed, but without video support from either cam
Netflix didn't show up in the Market either...
Bluetooth paired to a Plantronics Voyager Pro headset, but wouldn't see the Headset or Handsfree profiles offered by the device... WTF?
...the internal mic seemed nearly-worthless at first use
BTW, shortly after connecting it to WiFi, the Acer proposed downloading an update (v4.0.something - about ~370MB). The WiFi kept dropping and I had to set it to never disconnect to the update.
Unfortunately, the update didn't address any of the issues above. I suspect these are by brain-dead-design, rather than any inherent limitations of the hardware or of Honeycomb, but finding out what's up with this is why I'm posting here... I did search a bit and browse this Acer forum, but I confess to running out of time and I apologize for missing the answers if they're up here.
So, what's up with all this? Will I be able to work-around these things with a custom ROM sans Acer-or-Google-imposed limitations?
Thanks!

These limitations aren't either Google's nor Acer's design. It's Skype who has decided not to support video, it's part of this marketing campaign in the US where only a select carriers' phones will get videocalling in Skype. Similarly, Netflix is doing exactly the same thing, that's why it's only designed to work on a selected set of devices.
Apparently Netflix can be made to work on A500 though, haven't seen anyone being successful with regards to Skype.
Well
No Skype support for video calls. This is due to Skype, not Acer.
Netflix has not added support for the a500 yet - but we have a work around that enables it and allows you to watch video - you will need to root your Iconia first, however.
Netflix patch for Iconica : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116393&page=5
root for Iconia (assuming your ota update gave you 3.1): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138228
Pandora should work just fine with no Modding.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the answers. I gathered that about Skype - lack of video being their choice and treating the tab like a simple smart phone...
My suspicions of "by-design limitations" were bolstered by the elusiveness of Google Voice (I did find the posts about getting that working , and the annoying fact that with default browser settings the tablet is seen as a mobile phone and gets limited page views... Why GV doesn't show in the Market, after all this time (I saw some rather old posts about this and other Honeycomb tabs), still has me wondering.
Thanks again.

In your browser, click the icon in the top right corner, select "settings" then "advanced" and you can change the view mode from mobile to desktop. Also most mobile sites will have a link to switch the session from mobile to full.
Welcome! Glad to help always.

just like to let everyone know that acer a501 ics update is now ready for download

Usage of higher privileges in store

Hey,
After seeing that Moliplayer Pro and other 3rd party apps like phriz.be got access to the ID_CAP_MEDIALIB_PHOTO_FULL to get access to videos, I wanted to discuss how weird Microsoft seems giving these privileges to a video player app but not to Whatsapp, which is of crucial importance for the platform. I don't say this because I need it, but Whatsapp is #1 app with extremely bad reviews, and the most used reason for the bad critics are the inability to send/save videos. What do you think, should Microsoft just open up the API for everyone, or just to selected developers? Furthermore, does anyone happen to know why they gave the capability to these developers and not to those of Whatsapp, Facebook or any other social network that could really make use of them? Not even Instagram and Vine, who are about sharing videos, can access them from the device. It seems extremely enological to me..
EDIT: Whatsapp seems to have gained the capability in their recent beta, at least WPCentral reports so. Other apps that are allowed to use it were the old youtube app and nokia video upload

They should open up the god forsaken APIs to everyone.
It is not as if you can do a lot of harm by saving videos to ml.
