hd2 touchscreen not working well - HD2 General

Hi all !
SOrry if I have opened a new thread , I have red that this is a common problem anyway basically my touchscreen isn't working welll anymore, sometimes it works sometimes not. I think that the touchscreen connectors on the motherboard got too hot during android usage and the melted. My hd2 is out of warranty and got repared it cost me a lot, is there anyway to open it and restore the connection ?!? I know that there is a tutorial video to disassemble the entire phone !
Also I have noted that if I make some pressure on the physical key the touch cames back working

Android is not the cause... But I suggest you have someone with good knowledge in repairing touch screen phone.

well I have contacted the HTC UK assistence ( I got my phone on ebay ..) and they said the phone is still on warranty. ANyway they said me that if the found that the failure is caused by me they will ask me to pay etc, do you think that this failure could be considered user damage ?!?

look at the back 2 water indicators, are they white?
Does the phone have dents or look like it's been dropped?

no there aren't any dent either the phone hasn't been into waters, actually I have seen just one white circle sticker under the batter cover and yes it's white..
My concern was about the digitizer because I have pressed preatty hard this morning in order to have touch work ( if I press on the physical key the tocuh start working again...) abyway I have done it just 2 times so I shouldn't have broken it...

Mmmm. Tricky perhaps. A hard reset will either cure or leave you stuck. If you hard reset and the screen is indeed dead (touch wise) then you'll never get past the alignment stage. If the touch issue is software related then you would be sorted with the hard reset.
A gamble I think!!
However you are stuck at the moment so in a sense you have nothing to lose. If it ends up being useless then you are faced with a warranty (hopefully) repair otherwise some DIY though it's not entirely obvious what has broken/come loose - possibly just a ribbon connector.
Mike
Maybe the ribbon cable came loose on the LCD side?

Yeah i think its that as well, i hard reseted it a few times with no effect, in the begining of the day, it could still reconise the screen taps around 2/3 times before it totally went dead.
Are there any tutorials on how to open it up to check the ribbon?
Thanks.
This maybe the hardware problem with the mainboard itself. I read about this on here a few times, most people had the get their phones exchange....

Yes, I am equally unsure that this is just a simple loose connector. It may be, but it appears to be fine for a short while and only then goes off.
Like you myztikal47, I suggest going for warranty replacement if at all possible. Only if you have no warranty shuld you attempt a repair yourself - this is a notoriously ellusive fix and indeed I would say there is no 100% works for all answer. Certainly do not assume it's the screen - most probably it isn't and you'll waste your money.
There are dismantling links in this forum - but you'll find them on my small Hermes site http://michael-channon.spaces.live.com- go to the loose keyboard section and you'll see the links.

Need advice from a trinity hardware guru ....

hi everybody.
some weeks ago i bought a new casing for my trinity on ebay. as I had to open my trinity while on a long trip far away from home and htc tech support (the "hang up" button broke), i had already broken my guarantee. so i decided to change the casing myself. i managed to do that (it was not easy!!) and closed the casing and everything was alright, but some days later trinity started to have graphics issues. sometimes it hangs and the display gets kind of scrambled, when i reset it it posssibly doesn't show anything on the screen or it hangs during the boot, sometimes it helps simply shutting the device down and restarting, sometimes it helps pressing the left side of the casing (front and back casing elements) together.
what can that be? at the moment it works alright, but this is not ok for me. somebody with hardware know-how can tell me which part can be the "bad one" and what i can do to fix that? i don't want to pay the repair fee at htc tech partner, and i want to wait till the htc touch cruise is available to buy a new one!
thanks

Hi, I did similar thing...I assembled my trinity to change case to white. After the LCD did not work at all.
Of course service said, I broked garantee, and there is some problem with LCD cable plug.
what did the repair cost?
did you go to HTC? did they change the display plug?
it's a very subtle error in my case...
How To Disassemble HTC P3600
I also want to change my casing.
From what I hear ... this may be not such a good idea.
Hoever ... all I can help with is this disassemble manual for HTC P3600 (http://rapidshare.com/files/82751326/How_To_Disassemble_HTC_P3600__Trinity_.pdf.html).
Maybe disassembling, cleaning all the plugs and assembling it again can help (sounds stupid ... but who knows).
thanks ..
one of the problems with the casing i bought was that the metal counterparts of the screws were not(!) present in the new one. so i had to cut them out of the old one, heat them and press them into the new case. luckily, i had ordered two new casings (to change it again after some months when the grey/silver paint would have fell off till total aesthetic destruction - of this otherwise really slick phone - again), because trying to press that counterpart (don't know the word) without heating resulted in total damage
then I had hoped that not only the keypad, but also the electronics plate under the keypad (my "hang up" button still isn't perfect i have no "klicky" feel any more) would be included. no luck here.
so everybody please stay away from trying to change casings or any other hardware issue with your htc phones. i am opening my htc/qtek (before: s100, three units) phones for a longer time now and must say i will stop doing that and return to being a "normal" user. it all gets worse
thanks
I just remembered ... take a look at this site: http://cnn.cn/shop/p3600-trinity-c-277_278.html
All the stuff looks genuine ... maybe this casing will fit you better and there are spare touch screens also.
P.S. White casing DOES NOT peel.

I went to E-care, the HTC support in Hungary. I was lucky, the expert repaired it free, but in the future there is no garantee
Lucky you ... there is HTC support where you live
my LCD screen broke.
I have replaced my LCD screen because it was cracked, the new screen does not even power up. I can hear wm6 running in the background but the digitizer nor the screen seem to be responding at all. If use the old screen it seems to work fine.
Any ideas or comments on how to get this new screen working?
btw, I have a gen1 htc p3600.

Digitizer replacement?

The warranty for my HD is gone and I would probably need to change the touch screen digitizer myself, found these on ebay for ~60€, but does anyone know how to change them? Again, any help would be appreciated!
Originally:
HTC Touch HD, it has been a wonderful phone until now. I have encountered a wierd problem with the touchscreen.
First the touchscreen stopped working completely, after awhile it suddenly started working, at first it recognized some bits and pieces but now it recognizes every touch as normal, except..
It is very inaccurate and the "sum of inaccurity" seems to change depending on where I push the screen, the screen alignment option in settings does not fix this.
I recorded two videos to show this problem better:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xd1vjiHr2QU

Any help would be appreciated on how to fix this!

I have handled it with great care so no big knocks or drops. Ill contact the store about the warranty. Just wondered if theres a way how to simply fix this.
Just noticed, the screen works normally sometimes for one touch, then it goes back to the inaccurate **** :/
Im now guessing that some cable could be loose or something like that?
Have u tried recalibrating the screen? I can't remember exactly where I found it, but its in programs or settings somewhere.

I can tell you from previous experience, HTC does NOT warranty touch screens. You mentioned "a store", so I hope they help you, because HTC will not. >sigh<
Seems a little unfair if they don't seeing as the HD is purely touch screen!

Hmmh, well the store probably sends it to some service center here in Finland that fixes HTC phones.
Indeed sounds very stupid if the warranty doesnt cover the touchscreen.
Perhaps my HD suffered from something else than a broken touchscreen, eg. mainboard or a chip that controls the touch screen. Who knows I'm just hoping it "passes" the warranty :|
Well... Had Hard-SPL on my touch hd and duttys 1.7 rom, so the warranty is gone
Didn't know they were so picky about it, they said it would cost 605€ to repair the screen. So now I should probably start looking for a screen digitizer on ebay and some help on how to change it... Already downloaded the service manual, but there was nothing on how to change the digitizer, could anyone here show me some light to this? Thanks.
I have dismantle my HD to see if there's any way to change only the screen (it's broken)
There's no way, as far as I saw. You have to replace LCD, tourch screen and screen. It's one piece and there's no way easy way to open it without break it.
You can find all of them for about 200E.

Another sad story // hopefully with a good ending
I kinda have the same problem as Viba and others. Sorry for the looong post. But decided to describe in more details my experience up to now, and hope you can help as well.
All of a sudden, I started having problems with the touch screen of the Touch HD. I started noticing that whenever I touched the Touchflo buttons, the phone vibrated. Soon I came to realize the if I touched in some spot, the phone recognized that I was touching lower, to the point that it could not recognize touches in the taskbar, for instance.
The united has 2 or 3 months max. It had some falls before and I do not really know who (or which one) was the culprit.
Tried this as fix: re-alignment, hardresets, Official ROM upgrade. Then I started reading and understanding that the problem was probably the digitizer ("nice to meet you").
I live in Brazil and the Touch HD is not expected be released here any time soon. So the few HTC service centers do not know how to fix it and do not have parts for it. And also, I bought mine from an auction site by some user who bought it abroad, with no warranty whatsoever. I am left alone in this.
I was very frustrated and eager to get my device running again. So I started looking for a new digitizer and also the tools to open my phone. The digitizer (just the digitizer, not the LCD screen) I ordered from an ebay shop in Hong Kong on Monday and is expected to still arrive sometime in this century (IF Brazilian port authorities do not mess up). The tools arrived yesterday.
I downloaded the service manual and said to myself, let's see if the digitizer problem is maybe due to a loose flat cable. Got to work and carefully disassembled the device as per the service manual. (I have to say that, although I try to be carefull, I always scratch, bend or mess something up when I do jobs like these. So I was afraid of cracking some plastic or worse and actually did some.)
Up to where the service manual show, it went incredibly very well. But that's the problem. The service manual guides you to disassemble the unit up to the point where you are with the bezel, LCD and digitizer in one piece.
But hey! I saw zillions of internet shops selling the bezel (actually, the hole housing, but with no LCD), the digitizer or other parts separately! What is going on?
So I started trying to unmount the bezel, LCD and digitizer. Tried several things. It got really late. I was impactient. So I tried splitting the digitizer from the LCD, by inserting a hard plastic aluminium tip between the digitizer and the housing. A very thin plastic kind of tape came out (at lest part of it). So I tried doing it more. No success. And then I put a very thin screwdriver between then (just enough to get an ulgy bent it the plastic housing).
When I had played enough with that puzzle, I gave up and began mounting everything back. The good part is that I was able to get everything back and the phone is working. Well, except for the digitizer.
First thing I did was to kidnap the wife's Nokia E71 I bought her last month and she is not using yet (she couldn't learn to use yet; well, she hasn't even tried it), because I have to have mobile access to my emails.
And I really started now to consider other alternatives. Will some user like me EVER be able to change just the digitizer? Is it even possible? If it is, I would like to give it at least another shot.
But I am also afraid that it could be another part which is in failure. I just don't want to spend more $$$$ in this. It would be better to buy another phone (and maybe not a complete touchscreen - gosh, I miss my Tytn II). I so regret being a gadget freak and not waiting a release in my country.
Shoud I send my phone abroad for a service center repair? My sister lives in Dubai and she may be able to help.
Should I give up my unit and seel the used parts in ebay?
Hope to hear your suggestions. Thanks anyway.

I have already tried with 3 custom roms and 2 original SPL:s with two original roms.
The Finnish law allows me to get my HD replaced if I could prove that the custom rom didn't brake the digitizer. Already sent some emails to the local repairstation for HTC phones here in Finland, lets see...
I run a repair center (US). I have not gotten curious enough to take mine apart, but if someone has a dead one to experiment with, PM me.
Broken digitizer glass
I have the same problem with the digitizer glass being broken. I have had the back off the phone and stripped it back as far as I dare, but the service manual just doesn't tell you how to replace the digitizer and glass only. Checked out youtube where there are many videos with instructions on how to replace the screens and digitizers on lots of different phones as well as the iphone, just nothing on the Blackstone yet.
Any one else found a solution or decent instructions?
Today I disassembled my HD too, found a loose screen wire but nothing else. Even when I attached it properly the screen didn't work.
Has anyone found out how to change the digitizer?
some info
Hello,
I am also have HTC Touch HD, and I am also thinking about replacement of touch screen and housing because of scratches. Here instruction in Russian
http://www.pdacenter.ru/razborka/htc-touch-hd/
step 24 is not shown on the picture, but there is mentioned that in order to replace screen you should push it forward from back side of the screen; also mentioned that screen is fixed with double sided tape (probably it is fixed to the touch screen)
Also, did you try to use any polish to remove minor scratches on the touch screen? HTC Touch HS has resistive screen and probably may be polished (in contrast to capacitive touch screen that has some coating).
All the best
Also, about this problem see

You guys should be smarter! If you want to warranty exchange it, flash the normal SPL again and flash a stock rom!

HTC HD2 Screen Unresponsive

Hello Gents and Gals. I am trying to fix my friends HD2, I flashed his ROM with Energy couple of months ago and all was working fine. He gave the phone back to me saying that it is locked.
I tried unlocking the phone but it seems that the screen is unresponsive, so I flashed it again by going into the boot loader screen "Volume Up + Power Button". The phone stated that it is starting for the first time but the screen was still unresponsive. Any ideas on how to fix this issue? Or do I need to tell him to send the phone back to HTC for repairs?
Sounds like the touch screen died ....
Time for a repair ..
Also this really should have been posted in general , as it is not a ROM release , just an FYI
Aww okay. I'll let him know. Thanks.
I'll post like this in General next time. Tks.
HI, I have now the same problem after ROM Flashed, did you solve the problem by yourself, or really the touch screen died.
Rgds
Same thing with me. I ordered new digitizer+LCD and changed them, but the screen is still unresponsive. Other ROM didn't help.
Some advices?
i seen this happen with several phones, reflash to stock and send to HTC they will repair it for free.
I have same problem, yet my phone was bought 18 months ago...worked perfectly until now.
Can a touch screen get defective after normal usage ?

Yes it can, if your touch functionality of your HD2 has stopped working then your digitizer has probably went out.

This is usually due to the replacement components not being properly installed. Also when one is working with the internals they have to be very careful as some of the internals are very easy to break without you even knowing you did. So the cases you spec of are more than likely not because it was not the Digitizer or LCD was not the problem, but human error.
i fixed mine and it didnt cost me
the unresponsive screen maybe the digitizer buts its more likey the end call button, believe it or not dirt can get behind the contact or because the back button is next to we use the far edge of the end call button thus leading to bending the contact, when any of this happens your screen will be unresponsive
you can either take it to a shop and pay for a new screen and digitizer or take it apart and clean the contacts
go to ifixit for step by step guides
hope that helps

I have no idea what are you talking about, that doesn't make sense, as far as I know is no direct relation between END button and (non-working/responding) touchscreen: you may even disconnect/replace bottom buttons ribbon/flex from motherboard and touchscreen will work if OK(or not, if defective).
Is there anybody who can confirm this(or not)?
3 weeks ago I had a LCD/digitizer replaced (cracked screen, but was still working) all was great till 2 days ago. Screen stopped working - took it back to the place I had replace the screen and they tried 3 brand new screens and still no go. Ended up being my main board - luckily I had a spare HD2 and they pulled that board and all is well again.
Believe it or not your LCD/digitizer might be fine - find someone or a way to test main board would be where I would start after the last 3 days.
Good luck
PS - I did NOT try the end button idea prior to the repair.

From my own experience :
1. It's a common issue, there are hundreds of reports in this forum and I read them all because I had the same problem some months ago
2. Probably not. It's generally hardware-related and often the digitizer (touch responsive screen) . Brief explanation : There's a flaw in the design of the HD2, the thin cable wiring the digitizer to the motherboard, is just below the power button. After some extensive use of your powerbutton, it might happen that the power button touches the cable and cause some kind of shortcut in it which makes the digitizer unresponsive to the motherboard.
3. I replaced mine here : http://www.htcphonerepairs.co.uk/ . Fast repair, secure shipping to Belgium, good price and excellent customer support. (Sounds like advertizing but I swear to be only a happy customer )
There are also multiple videos on youtube explaining how replacing the digitizer yourself if you dare !
Also, I read answers saying that you can somewhat "play" with your buttons (especially the power one) to turnaround the problem. That's correct, BUT it's absolutely inevitable that the problem with come back again if you use the buttons, and you'll have to force more and more to unblock again and repeat again and a again... and that will damage your button bar.
I did this during almost 2 months and that put down all my buttons and now they are really close to the chassis which is very annoying. If only I knew it before I would have replaced the digitizer directly !
For 6 months with my new digitizer + using ICS with soft buttons, I have no problem at all !

Just because this dude has "no idea" it doesn't mean he knows it better.
It IS the END button that gets pressed too often and at some point it begins to mess with the digitizer connection. It can be dirt. It can just be the cable came lose and needs tightening, it can be wear-out.
whatever it is, it is caused by the end-key being too close to the connector cable.
If you guys only searched for this on the HD2 Forums before posting this Thread hat not been necessary. It is the most well known design flaw of the HD2 and as such well documented and commented here.

This is truth. Save yourself some time and frustration and repair it or get it repaired. It's a great phone.

You didn't get it right or at all:
END key may determine touchscreen failure along the time(being the CAUSE! of this), but the EFFECT is an unusable touchscreen, which cannot be repaired in any other way than replacing it(the touchscreen!!, I mean).
Any other attempt to repair, clean, bend, press, cut or whatever WILL NOT FIX an already faulty touchscreen (even caused by END button excessive or not usage) and who thinks otherwise, no problem with me: SWEET DREAMS!
You sound like my comment hurt you. Sorry if it did. I'm not one hundred percent sure that this issue can be fixed without replacing the screen, yet fairly certain. I've now disassembled two HD2 and couldn't quite find the precise spot where the damage occurred, yet after properly assembling the devices again, one came back alive, the other not. The one which has the screen and buttons not working right is the one that got thrown at me by a kind person. It most likely has physical damage somewhere, although I couldn't locate it. The other one didn't get damage and has screen and buttons work well after complete disassembly and assembly.
Both devices also have different screen types.
I now gave up both devices and am withdrawing myself from the HD2 world. Too many issues with the devices getting old.

HTC HD2 Touchscreen doesn't work!

Hello out there.
Something bad happened today.
My HTC HD2 touchscreen suddenly doesn't react anymore to touches.
Windows Phone 7 was flashed at that moment.
10 min. ago, I flashed an Android ROM, and the screen worked again for 1-2 minutes, before it started to ignore touches again.
I've had it for 2 years now so warranty is over.
What is wrong? A loose connection? Software error?
It's the best phone I've ever had, so please help! :-(
Try to push power button hard.I think digitizer is moved or dead...

Okay, I tried to push the power button hard, and the screen now reacts to touches again. But I think that it will stop working again suddenly. What's a permanent solution? Disassemble the phone and tighten the loose connection or what?
BTW Thanks for the answer!

Hi my friend Mooooooa,
don´t use Voodoo-Tricks; Magic Glas-Marbels onto the Touch and don´t press the I/O Button to hard ( this can damage the tinly little Power-Button, too ). You have to replace your almost dead Touchscreen to fix your Problem correct.
I recommend to Change the LCD too, means--->BUY in denmark a complete tested "LCD/TOUCH" Combo ( need only 2 Days to your Home-Adress, maybe faster ), because it´s a lot easier for you.

Agree, same issue happened to me last week on my hd2 and that phone was not dropped or hit. The digitizer just stopped working. I replaced the digitizer with a new one and voila, touchscreen is working again. Just make sure you dont buy a cheapo digitizer cus it may not work.

Thanks for the suggestion. But I think it's to expensive, the combo costs about 140€ here. I can buy a second hand HD2 for about 200€.

So you only replaced the digitizer and not the whole LCD screen? Because that's cheaper then, about 60€ for a new original one.

Here in Germany you have to Pay for a complete Touch/LCD Module 80-85 Euros ( incl. Shippingcosts ). Denmark belongs to the European Union ( or not ?! ), so you can use ( if you have 3-4 Days time and a few Shipping-Euros more to Denmark ) every Dealer inside the EU...
You will never get a used HD2 in good Condition ( maybe with the same Killer-Touchscreen ) for only 80 Euro-Bucks.
Best Regards,
Micha

If you have a Micro-Touch 0x30 ( 60H00295 Combo) inside your HD2 you have the old crappy Solder-Version. I know a lot People, they have big trouble to do that ( my whole Workplace is full with murdered HD2 Modules ). If you have a 0x50 ( 60H00300) the Replacement is easy because its the ClickOn Touchscreen. The Only Problem ist to remove the Touch from the LCD. I need 20 Seconds to do that, but i have expierence to do that. And the next Problem you have is to find the Original Sticky-Special Tape to bring all back together...
I recommend 1st timern to buy a Complete new Combo. This is mutch easier but include enough work and big chances to destroy your HD2...
Best Regards and be carefull to do that ( you can Crack the LCD-Module very easy ),
Micha

if you don´t find a cheap solution you can have mine HD2 here:
http://mperlitsch.hintergrundbild.com/hdr/IMG_1036.JPG
http://mperlitsch.hintergrundbild.com/hdr/IMG_1037.JPG
Everything is NEW ( LCD; TOUCH; FLEX-Cable; Cover and used Battery-Cover with special finish).
I don´t need that HD2 ( looks new and everythink works fine ). So you can have that for free if you want. Installed is Artemis-ROM V65 German ( i can flash the DAN Version too ).
So you have another Option, if everything is going wrong...
Greetings,
Micha ( from Kiel -Baltic Sea-; nearby Danmark )

Hello again. I have tried only once to disassemble the HTC HD2, and that wasn't a success, I unfortunately broke something. . If you don't need the HD2 your talking about, I would appreciate that a lot. I like the HTC HD2 phone, and I would be happy if I could still have one. It's the greatest phone ever, in my opinion.
- Off topic: My parents live nearby the German border, so they often do purchases in Flensburg. And I've been to Kiel before, nice town. . I live myself in Odense, about 1½ hours driven from Flensburg.
I have a different problem. My friend have a HD2,and I have install him a android on HD2.Its worked fine for some while, and then he(my friend) started a CWM and do a some of "system restore" and touch is stopped working, and now I dont know what is the problem, what is he did, anyone pls help,I want to fix the phone for him ? any solutions ? anyone had a problem of this kind ?
Sorry for my bad english.
