Just looking for someone to point me in the right direction... I know it can be done but google searches only seem to return ads for people selling already flashed phones. Little help would be greatly appreciated!

Google how to do it with the Epic 4G...thats how I go mine on Boost. There is a youtube video and a section here on XDA in the Epic android development section on how to get data working on the Epic on boost mobile. It works for the NS4G..trust me..
as mentioned above.. its the exact same method as epic. tho the code to put the phone in diag mode is different. *#*#DIAG#*#*
now i just wish we could edit wimax settings. :/

If it was once activated and that line it was activated on is still active, the RSA keys are still valid. Until it's activated on a different account and someone either cancels service or doesn't pay their bill.

Oh really? I still have my Sprint account but the NS4G isnt active right now on the account. Where I live we will not see 4G for who knows how long so thats why I went to boost on it.

there are no RSA keys in the nexus s. thats htc stuff. its the mac address that gets put into the system. and the ppl getting 4g via other means dont have it activated on sprint.. theyve edited the mac address to one that is valid. HOW they edited the mac is my question.
*edit*
i will agree partly with what lancerEVA has stated.. some phones have previously been activated and kinda got lost in the system for now. but i still stick with my original message... there are people that are editing the mac address manually.
on the epic this was possible using the wimax debug menus. these menus have been removed on the nexus.
Why would anyone want to use a Nexus S 4G phone on Boost? Boost Mobile consists entirely of iDENT which is totally incompatible with the Nexus S 4G. Boost phones that use CDMA just use the Sprint towers anyways so there would be no difference in coverage. Boost Mobile has never, ever had CDMA towers of their own. Also, iDENT is vastly inferior to CDMA in every way. iDENT is just TDMA with a few "enhancements" like AT&T's old network used to be.

Yea your right...the coverage is the same....I get the same ho-hum 3G speeds with Boost as I do Sprint except I'm paying $45 for unlimited everything because of the shrinkage plan with Boost. What are you talking about Boost has never, ever had a tower of there own? Hey "techguy"...do you realize there owned by Sprint?...and by the way, when you say iDENT are you referring to iDEN? They have CDMA and iDEN networks and the Nexus will run off of the CDMA network like on Sprint because it is Sprint...get it?

exactly.. people use sprint phones on boost for the best of both worlds. virgin is also a great candidate.. the $25 plan is pretty nice. tho i did just read that virgin will be getting rid of unlimited data.. well.. throttling after 2.5GB I believe. regardless.. 2 great options besides Sprint.. which is a great option compared to the other US carriers. win/win/win.
I will be getting my NS4G in the mail soon. I would love to do the flashing myself, but still looking for a guide. I have the guide on how to flash the EVO tho.
Is it safe to do software upgrades on the phone when I get it? And if I do any software upgrade after I get it flashed, will I lose my 3g or mms?

WHY is it illegal? whats the actuall reason why its Illegal?
It's an FCC violation to tamper with serial numbers. You're committing fraud.
Ok understood is there any other way that i could the epic 4g to work on boost
why? you that broke that you cant afford a monthly bill, but can afford the phone?
I CAN afford sprints everything data plan as well as i can afford Sprints simply unlimited plas as well as to purchase the phone out of contract i just dont like to be in contract and i prefer to pay $50 over $100 a month.

Tampering with serial numbers is illegal, but not taking the phone to another carrier. Thanks to the FCC you can take any phone to any compatible network. If IPhone was CDMA sprint would have to let you put it on. They may fight you and they don't have to support the phone, but they have to let you use it. This has been talked about tons of time on XDA. Search it. Boost will probably have no problems. Just no support for the phone.

Well one reason you care if they support it or not is because of issues you can potentially run into that can't be helped. I know someone who works for Criket who talks about people who bring phones from other carrier onto their plan, and how some people might not be able to send or receive, txts or calls or what not and the carrier can't support it at all. I guess if enough people put the epic on boost and it was a phone software thing that could be modified to make boost and the phone play nice then you'd have no issues, and of course it all depends, many phones will be just fine on other carriers, but there is the risk. Luckily since boost mobile is sprint, this hopefully is a nonissue and I'm just being silly.
First off, Sprint WILL NOT activate a non-sprint phone on their network. Simply will not happen, just like Verizon (who used to if you found an easy-going rep) will not. Since Boost IS Sprint, it just won't happen.
Secondly, the reason Sprint won't let you activate the phones on the Boost plan is because those devices are tied to specific plans that Sprint offers. There's a reason NOBODY has gotten an EVO, Instinct, Pre, Pixi, Hero, Moment, Bold, Tour, etc on Boost or Virgin without tampering with the ESNs, and it's the same reason why the Epic won't be on there either. The only Sprint phones you can activate on Boost are the non "everything plan required" phones, and you'll never see a non-Sprint, non-Boost phone on there.
I'm fairly certain you can use it on Cricket or MetroPCS, if that's useful. No promises that it'll work perfectly, but it'll likely work to some degree.

I'm not going to start anything. Just google Evo on boost and it will probably lead to the same with the epic. But... There is always a way.

Just wondering if the Epic can be used on MetroPCS like the Evo can. I recently sold my Captivate for an Evo, and I hate to say it, but I think I liked the Captivate more. Better screen and better processor is hard to downgrade from
If it's possible to flash the Epic to Metro, I would pick it up in a second.
I haven't found any search results on Google or here, so I figured there was no harm in asking.
Thanks in advance for any help or answers you might have.
From what I've read, slim to none. At least, if you plan to use the internet for anything besides web browsing with the stock browser (ie, forget anything that accesses the internet directly within an app).
The problems:
1. MetroPCS uses proxies for everything.
2. Android proxy support sucks. No, wait... that's not strong enough. Android proxy support sucks monkey balls. In theory, you might be able to build your own kernel that includes iptables support and use iptables with some handwritten helper apps to deal with them... but you'll basically be trailblazing virgin territory, and mostly on your own. Your phone is unlikely to ever work properly. Android's crude proxy support only (kind of) works with the built-in browser. This isn't kiddie stuff. This isn't even "L33t" stuff. If you're a true Linux God who works for Metro, chills with Linus once or twice a year, and has access to Metro's internal documentation (or possibly the guy who created Cyanogen, with a close friend who works for Metro), you MIGHT get it to work... eventually. Nobody less is likely to ever get an Epic to work properly on Metro.
3. Android depends on Sprint for things like network-based location service. Guess what isn't going to work on MetroPCS?
4. Did I mention that Metro is 1xRTT, and the one place where they have 4G (Las Vegas) uses LTE, which isn't compatible with the Epic?
Really, if you add up what it would cost to buy an unsubsidized Epic and 24 months of service with MetroPCS, and compare it to the cost of buying an Epic with a 24 month Sprint contract and 24 months of Sprint, it's insane to even contemplate trying to use the Epic with MetroPCS. The only reason to ever use a Sprint Android phone on Metro is if you have an old one that you'd just chuck into a drawer, and would rather give it to a needy friend or family member with MetroPCS. Buying Sprint's most expensive phone at full retail to use on Metro would be insane.
(By the way, I know this because I *was* going to give my old Hero to a needy friend with Metro).
If the evo can gain access then most likely the epic can. I'm just making this broad assumptions considering the run the same operating system with mostly all the same functions.

Maybe you can use the Epic on Boost Mobile and what are the limitations with Boost Mobile besides 4G?
From what I remember when was with Metro (had a Touch Pro), Howard Forums are where a lot of their modding community hangs out. At least that was where all the work/discussion seemed to be going on back then. A simply google search should show the way.
The keys are internet & MMS. Internet tends to be the first thing to get unlocked, but without that MMS is hopeless. Even then MMS isn't always possible, depends a lot on the phone. In the past HTC phones were very easy to make fully function, with Samsung & LG phones being rather difficult. Also keep in mind that, as much as Metro used it as a marketing ploy, they really don't like the flashed phones ideas. They've already nearly disabled all flashed phones once by changing the passwords needed to access the web proxies.

native sprint coverage only, no roaming.
for some this may be good, for others it may be a dealbreaker.
to make mms work, you need to simply alter the mmsc URL in the ##DATA# > MSL menu and change it from Sprint's to boost's
changing the MMS url is easy for boost..same w/ making internet work... Samsung phones are CAKE to put on boost FWIW

Even if you could get all the 3G services working properly, you could never use it as a 4G phone on MetroPCS. Epic is WiMax, Metro is LTE.
Trust me, you want the 4G. Now this is my opinion only so take it for what it is worth. From what I have seen of the existing Metro 3G network it sucks plain and simple, not just for data, but voice services as well. I have tested out the 4G network a bit in South Florida though and am duly impressed. Speed was very good, and even though I don't believe 4G is used for voice services yet, the phone I saw still had much better call performance (most notably actually receiving incoming calls).
what you need!!!!! to get an EVO and put it on BOOST. I was with SPRINT before and its riddiculous that i used to pay about $90-$1000/month with my Touch Pro2 and now i pay $50/month to use it on BOOST and i have the same service except everything is unlimited and i have no phone insurance. Calling BOOST to activate an EVO will definitely not work but if u already have a BOOST CDMA account all you really need is the MSL code for the EVO then reprogram it with your BOOST# and MSID, thats what I did with my TP2 and its been working great since Feb. Have not heard anybody whos tried it yet but im sure they will. Theres is no 4G service in NYC as of yet so thats no problem as SPRINT makes you pay$10 extra for something you dont have. Metro PCS is supposedly getting 4G service by Dec. so BOOST which is owned by SPRINT is sure to be getting it too and if I have to pay $10extra to BOOST then so be it $60/month is great compared to paying at least $40/month more to SPRINT for the same thing

#1. It is not the exact same service, in the past boost phones were mainly nextel devices, the nextel network isn't nearly as large. Both current boost phones like the katana, blackberry, etc. and virgin mobile phones connect to a LIMITED number of sprint towers, its not the same coverage.
#2. How is boost going to charge you $10 for 4g service on a phone it doesn't offer and a service it won't provide?
"except everything is unlimited"
Uh, no. You have the standard 5 GB monthly cap. :V
Anyway i can do this with a bad ESN Evo?
Could someone possibly go into more detail about this?
I've been lookin for a guide like crazy and cant find one, I'm a little confused on whether its as easy as changing the boost number and msid, some people say yes, some people say no you have to change the esn. Would somebody please verfiy!
You do not need to change anything to your phone. You simply need to get it on the Boost network. The only way to do that, is by calling and playing dumb. If you have a phone with a bad ESN, you would have to clone it, which is illegal. No 4G for Boost, only 3G.
ok has anyone tried the above method of changing the phone number and msid to match boost, ive tried and not getting it to go can someone please help. Phone has clean esn, is it only the one with bad esn that needs to be "esn repaired" please let me know thanks

There's no legal way to do it.

Both vzw and sprint use CDMA... no simcards involved.
To OP: No, verizon requires the ESN to be already present on their database (same way as sprint) before activating the device.
The process is likely the same as it is to get the evo to work on boost, cricket, or other cdma providers.
I haven't done this personally, nor do I know anyone who has, but in theory, it seems like it should.

Boost is owned by Sprint so it makes some sense that you could cross those phones.
Not sure about cricket but it's my guess that they don't lock down their esns.
The only way I've ever heard of using a Sprint/Verizon phone on either network is with esn spoofing and it's not legal, at all.
Until carriers allow other phones ont heir networks it's a no-go. Except as said above by changing ESN (illegal) or having one hell of an inside connection. The ESN would have to be added to their database of accepted devices. Like I said...a hell of an inside connection would be needed.
You said it bro! Spoof was the word I was looking for. Will require a donor phone though on the network you want to use it on.

It's not illegal to change your ESN as long as you are paying for the fees. The legality comes in when you try to clone ESN in order to avoid fees.
But even if OP were to clone the ESN, the frequency's don't really match and would have problems working
And if this was remotely feasible, I'd have a Verizon iPhone 4 on Sprint right now.

Its kinda the culture of XDA.
And to be completely honest its encouraged by the rules, or lack there of.
A close friend of mine got an Evo to put on Metro recently, and after he got the MetroFlash done to it, I went ahead and got the web, gps and MMS features working on it by flashing the MetroDroid rom over it. Once I got it done and confirmed working, another friend of mine and his sister who also have Evo's on Metro wanted me to do this to their phones, as well. I did so, but during the process, I realized that her phone was connected to and running on Sprint's 4G network. One of my cousins also has an Evo on Metro and I just confirmed with him that his 4G takes him to the Sprint one-day pass for $9.99 page just like the other Metro Evos do. I've dealt with 5 different Evo's that are on Metro, and this is the only one that has 4G working on it.
I did a ##3282# to compare the Wimax settings of her phone to the others, but there were no differences that stood out to me.
Does anyone know if there are any version of QPST or CDMA workshop out there that have the capability of reading/writing the WiMax parameters of these phones? I am sure there are setting that can be adjusted using a dedicated program that aren't available using EPST (##3282#), but I would need some help getting this done.
Does anyone have any ideas? Or is there already a fix out there for Evo users on Metro to be able to use 4G that I did not find when I searched? If not, I'd love to get this out to the community. I'm sure this would also work for people who have their Evos on Cricket, too.
The wimax for Sprint is provided by a separate company, i think its called "clear wire". Anyway they provide wimax to lots of places. You get a contract with them and use the EVO to pick up the signal. You don't need Sprint.....

Thanks for your insight, but I am aware of the fact that Sprint's 4G signal comes from Clear and that you can get a contract with Clear if you were inclined to do so. However, that is not the case here. This phone is fully flashed to Metro and still says "Connected to Sprint" when you turn on 4G and works at 4G speeds. She does not have a contract with Clear, yet it works. Somehow, the way her phone is set up, it runs on Metro's network with 4G off and Sprint's 4G network when the antenna is on.

No, it is always connected to Metro, the only thing that runs on sprint is the 4G, the $10 pass is also technically from sprint, this is because the wimax mac address is assigned to sprint. This will happen on any Evo, as long as you don't corrupt the RSA Keys. No you don't need QPST/QXDM to rewrite the MAC Address, it can be done thru adb, but with the evo it has an additional level of security of the RSA Keys, so it wouldn't help.

I understand that it always runs on Metro and that the 4G is on Sprint. I meant that it switches back to Metro's coverage if there is no WiMax signal or if you turn off the 4G antenna. I also know about the RSA keys and about MAC addresses. However, I do have access to a phone flashed to Metro and it connects to Sprint's/Clear's 4G all the time. If one phone can do it, then any phone can do it; which is the entire point of this thread. What I need help with is figuring out why that one phone does connect AND run on 4G.
Again: I have no use for this personally, as I am on Sprint. I only want to know how it works so I can share it with everyone.
That sounds like an error on sprints side of things. Like that device is unknowingly accessing the network, or it's permission was never revoked.

I know metro PC's has 4g coverage in certain markets. I am pretty sure she is getting 4g provitioned through metro. Also when flashing metro it always does not change the sprint sign on top. Even though it is running on metro. I think one way to find it is to ask her how much she pay a month. Because metro pcs plan with 4g is 10 dollars more.

That's a possibility, as I found out after making this thread that her phone was brand new in the box and activated on Sprint, but it was never used on Sprint at the time it was flashed over to Metro. All the other phones were used on Sprint and later disconnected from Sprint at one time or another and for one reason or another.
Is it possible to re-write the WiMax MAC address on the phone? If so, then I could back-up her WiMax settings using Amon and try flashing the RSA keys from her phone onto another phone after the MAC address has been changed to match hers. It's just a theory......I don't know. I'm willing to hear out any other ideas you guys may have.

That is definitely not the case. Metro's 4G network is not compatible with Sprint and will not work on the Evo. Sprint is the only carrier that uses WiMax for 4G, and the only way she should be able to connect to 4G is if she was paying Clear for their service.....which she is not. Her plan is the basic $40 a month for talk & text.....nothing more.
Using Rom Manager should make a FULL back up....including ALL wimax setting.

Agreed. However, the RSA keys for your WiMax are married to the MAC address on your phone. MAC addresses are not backed up as they are particular to individual hardware. Therefore, in order to try this I would first need to re-write the MAC address on whatever phone I'm flashing the WiMax back up onto to match the MAC address of the phone from which the WiMax back up came from.
Even then, it's a theory and it may not work.
Oh sorry I didn't knew that. I stand corrected. Also if you don't mind can you tell what sort of 3g speed you get with metro pcs.

No need to apologize.....input is appreciated and necessary to figure something out.
3G speeds? None. lol More like 1x speeds. Also, my Evo is on Sprint, so I wouldn't be able to tell you exactly what the download speeds are. I can tell you that it makes Sprint's super slow data speeds seem faster than lightning. lol
Next time I'm with any of the people who have a Metro Evo (which is quite often), I'll try to remember to download and run SpeedTest just to see what it does.
