Phone modems. - Galaxy S II General

I can't seem to understand which Modem version I need to install on my device.
I rooted my SGS2 and installed the villain rom and it said in the end to update the modem to a XXKG1. Atm I have a XXKE7 one.
Can I install the XXKG1 modem?

First of all, thanks for the reply.
But I was looking for a more general rule:
Can I install any modem? I saw a thread in the developers forum which has a very long list of modems that have the PHONE, PDA specs under each modem name.
I thought maybe I need to install one that matches my own modem or something of that sort. Would love to get a proper explanation.

The baseband (modem) update contains the information required to operate the radio chipset and generally gets refined and improved with later releases. That's not to say you will encounter any issues using the KE7 version with KG1 firmware but of course it would make sense to upgrade.
Regards.

Generally its good practice to match the modem software to the rom, but some members have suffered poor signal when they installed the kg1 modem, and ended up going back to the kf2 modem software.
At one point i was running villainrom 2.0 with ke7 modem, but have just updated to the kg1 version. No real difference so far, except maybe slightly better wifi performance?

How do I update the modem btw?

Either a modem.bin is contained in the ROM's .tar, then it gets flashed automatically AFAIK, or you have a seperate .tar for it, put that into the "Modem" or "Radio" slot in Odin and off you go

But do I have to put the phone in some mode?
Download / Recovery mode?

Yes, would need to boot phone into download mode.
And choose modem file in "Phone" selection in Odin (as is mentioned in this thread).

Maybe try flashing a stock low level (with bootloaders) rom via odin so that the bootloaders are replaced. And use the latest odin, I think it's 1.82 now, that should reduce your problems flashing.
is all the data lost by returning to stock (is there a way to do it without formatting )

Ok ill do that, but how do i find a stock low lvl Rom? could you point me in the right direction? i dont wanna brick my phone hahaha ive already messed it up with the bootloader stuff...
this is what i know about my phone
PDA. I9000XWJVH
PHONE: I9000XXJVO
CSSC: I9000XXEEJV3
MODEL NUMBER: GT-I9000
FIRMWARE VERSION: 2.3.3.
BASEBAND VERSION: I9000XXJVO
what else do i need to know ?
Your best bet is to do a bit of reading around just so you know what you're trying to do.
[Ramad]'s thread of stock firmwares is probably the most helpful to you. It's got loads of stock firmware and some detailed instructions, as well as downloads for odin and all the necessary files.
If you're going to flash bootloaders you need a file from this thread that has "sbl" in the filename. From the info you've posted you're PDA is XWJVH, your modem (PHONE) is XXJVO and your CSC is XEEJV3. If you want to keep this setup just find the right download with the bootloaders and you should be good to go. Of course you can always flash another ROM if you'd rather. If you're going for a clean flash also flash with a pit file and repartition checked. All the gingerbread so far use 512.pit but you can always check on samfirmware too.
Also below are a couple of links to general guides (which are stickies in the "Galaxy S I9000 General" section. They've just got a load of useful information for all kinds of things:

Connection between kernel and a modem

Hello,
I wanted to ask if there is any connection between a kernel and a modem version ?
Can I use any kernel with any modem ?
Thanks !
Yes you can. Also there's a q&a section

I believe so since the firmware has the modem inside. But from what I have read you can use any modem you like on any Kernel but some may not work for you depending on where you live.

If by firmware you mean rom, no, not automatically, it depends if the rom comes with a modem inside.
You can always flash another modem ontop of the one installed if you want to, and unlike in the old days, modem flashing is a low risk operation, as generally at worst you just have to reflash another modem.

Change baseband

I'm not sure if you can but I want to change my baseband from kl7 to kkla4, sorry if it sounds dumb but thanks if anyone is willing to help
use odin...or the Q&A section, whichever you see fit
I'm curious about this too. Im familiar with the multi file firmware but not the single file LA4. How do you extract just the baseband?
Can you elaborate a little on how to use Odin mate
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
Chang baseband is just changing modem. Go to the dev section to down load the la4 modem and flash it from cmw . Warning tho my kk1 start to have issue with data connection after flash la4 where it would disconnect itself every now and then. So make a bk up first

Yes it's possible thru Odin, I have done this too. From my experience KL7 is the best modem, it holds on to signal better and wifi wakes-up very quick. But overall LA4 rom is the best stock rom out there, you might just wanna flash the whole rom as well.

The most radio is la4 and is better than other modem. Why do you update the complete rom la4?

[Q] How to extract a ROM

Hello, i want to extarct the ROM from my moms S4 any way to do that? and i preffer a way that wont damage the device or any data on it i just need a copy of the ROM
What exactly are you wanting to achieve by doing that ?
The only way I know is to make a backup on her phone in CWM and then restore it on yours.
Pointless though.

What's the point in doing that?
If your mom's phone has a stock rom in it right now, why not just download the stock rom
from SamMobile.com ?
If your mom's phone has some custom rom in it, why not simply download the same
custom rom which you can find here in xda ?
Or perhaps you just want to spy on your mom and see all her texting, email and phone numbers? LOL
My moms S4 has a modem that works well in israel the i9505 works badly if its bought not from sanny ( a i9505 supplier ) and my is a T mobile from the states so yes getting her rom would work best for me and i couldnt get to copy her modem to the PC always stops before starting like its blocked or something
Ummmm you should make sure that its not an i9500 if it is that will explain why it doesn't seam to be as good I think.

Hers is a different model than yours. The ROMs are interchangeable but the modems are not. You cannot use a 9505 modem on a t mobile 919. Besides, the modem isn't part of the ROM so backing up her ROM wouldn't let you move the modem to your phone.

Yeah but extracting/flashing a ROM on the s4 will not change the modem. Modem can only be changed with Odin or heimdall and flashing the wrong modem=bad news. If you're asking how to extract a ROM to fix modem issues you probably shouldn't be playing with your modem... but here you go.

Well, there are a plethora of modems in there. Puerto Rico, Mexico, Canada for a few different firmwares. I don't know what exact phone or baseband you have but I linked that for the reading about modems.

N910TUVU1COD6 - Modem - Stock Kernel - Stock Recovery

If you are looking for the Stock Kernel - Stock Recovery or Modem file for the latest Lollipop Update for the TMO Note 4
You can use FLASHIFY to install Kernel or Recovery
You should be able to flash the modem using ODIN 10.6 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711451
I am not certain about earlier versions of ODIN.
you will find all files here - DOWNLOAD
Stock Rom from Sam Mobile is being uploaded to GOOGLE DRIVE - when it is finished uploading you can access at link above.
Flash in ODIN 10.6
I hope this is helpful
I am not responsible for your actions or your phone.
Not yet considering upgrading to Lollipop as I am not willing to give up Xposed.
Curious though if there could be any benefit or adverse affects in flashing the "Modem" ONLY to KitKat based ROM?
Anyone tried - comments?
modem file is no longer on mediafire. says it's removed.
edit: got it

I have posted a new link for the Modem - Kernel and Recovery - but will need to post a new link for the STOCK ROM a little later - sorry for any inconvenience -
PS - anyone know why Media Fire is banned? Just curious?

I totally agree! Fingers crossed that xposed works with TW one day. Yeah, I just flashed the modem file via odin. Works great on KitKat. Tried calls via cellular & WiFi calling, data via LTE & WiFi, tether, and Bluetooth all around. Don't know about battery life yet or signal (cell tower practically in my backyard) but will report any negatives here if found. Oh btw, use cp button for modem on odin. And you we can always flash back to the old MK7 version if there any issues.... Enjoy!

The OP loaded them on Google Drive now.
Do we still need install modem file, boot.img and stock kernel even after I flash (through ODIN) the firmware from sammobile? Sorry, I have been installing custom ROMs and trying to get back to stock to see how it works. I thought just flashing firmware would be enough (and I thought this will take care of latest model, boot.img), am I wrong?
No need to flash these if you did the whole deal.

Indeed. These phones are hard to brick
So has flashing this modem to a kitkat frimware and rom change/increased the signal/data speeds?

It's possible to have minor improvements through an updated baseband/modem/radio version but nothing miraculous. Sometimes newer versions are worse. Just depends. Mine seems the same so far. We'll see. You can always go back.
