Cognition, Villian, and Litening ROMs are the most popular in my opinion.
I know the Cognition ROM will let you overclock. Not sure about the others.
Theres really no need to overclock, this phone is lighning fast as it is and you can run it at 800Mhz with no noticable drop in speed....
Read up on odin, don't bother overclocking (as stated), buy a jig off ebay and don't rush into flashing ROMs (at least til your jig arrives)
and well done for winning

Hi
sorry if it sounds stupid but wots a jig? Lol
A jig could well be your "get out of jail free" card. It will enable you to get the phone into download mode should you screw up flashing a rom. It also resets the download counter should you need to return the phone.
Search ebay for galaxy s 2 jig, only a few pounds.

Yep, just look for your firmware version in about phone, grab the CF-Root kernel that matches the firmware version (Last characters like KE4, KE7, etc.) and then flash with Odin. For Odin, simply install Kies to get the proper drivers installed, load up odin, check PDA, look for the .tar file and flash. Pretty straightforward!
Keep in mind that some ROMs come pre-rooted (Like Cognition) because they use Cyanogenmod capable kernels (Supplied by codeworkxx from CM)

Hi guys,
I think my galaxy s is knackered - it boots then goes to a black screen and vibrates.
I can get into recovery mode and set defaults but still no joy.
Now i have read i need to flash my phone using odin and my original firmware - but where do i get these and how do i do it?
Im on 3 UK if it makes any difference.
Thanks
samfirmware.com
You're welcome!
How about we read the rules and learn where to post...hint hint, his isn't development
As the previous poster said, make an account on samfirmware.com and download the UK firmware of your choice. You may as well get one of the official (or even JPU if you're feeling adventurous) Froyo builds while you're at it.
It's almost impossible to brick SGS for good (emphasis on almost)
Search in general here. You will find all the roms.

I have Searched but cant find my original rom, i have managed to flash the 2.2.1 rom thats about but would like to know whats the best stock rom at the moment?
And whats with the roms with different pit numbers? can i use either?
Thanks again
JPO, JPU. Those two are the most popular ones at the moment.
Pit files dictate how the internal memory of the phone is partitioned. Most ROMs use 512.pit, but a few of the beta Froyo ones have specific pit files. Just follow the instructions on samfirwmare.
And again, not Q&A section. Go away.
okay, as i said i'm new to the site and i've bought myself a few days back my first android phone, Samsung SGH-I5800 Galaxy 3. I have a iTouch so i'm guessing the things you do here are similar to the term "jailbreak-ing". Now if isn't hard for any of you, i'd appreciate if some you could post me some directions or post explanations on certain aspcets such as:
What is root-ing and how it's done and what does it do?
What does the term "flash/flashing" mean?
What are ROMs? (Where to download and how to install Kyrillos 5.7 ROM)
What is ODIN and how to use it?
Thank you.
Hi there,
I have my Apollo only for a week, so i'm not pro user, but i've installed my first few custom roms on my Apollo so.
Personally i don't know that many as most users arround here, only thing i know is the following:
First download Kies software from Samsung support, that wil install the neccesary drivers for your apollo.
then,
Flashing: the prucedure u do to get other/custom android software on your phone/pda
Rom: the piece of software itself, what needs to be downloaded to put on your hpone/pda
Odin: the software program you need to run to start flashing your phone.
So in the therms of XDA: You download your Rom, put it in Odin flashing software, and start flashing your phone.
i hope i'm a bit of help, before flashing, i would read some posts here in the forum, more precisely on how to flash etc, cuz there are some risks involved if you don't do it right.

1) What is Rooting?
2) How To Root
3) Installing a new ROM/Kernel into the internal memory of your device is called Flashing.
4) If you are familiar to Linux, a ROM is similar to a Distribution. They are essentially all the same, built on the same platform. And most of them are tweaked, to deliver a better performance than the stock firmware.
5) Download Link + Install Instructions for Kyrillos' ROM
6) How to use Odin?
^ thanks guys, appreciate the effort
so, if i'm not mistaken all i have to do is download Kyrillos ROM followe instruction in ODIN and that's that?

You on froyo or eclair?? You mean z4root. It doesn t take that much time. Reboot and retry.
And if you are on froyo, z4root will not work. You have to use superoneclick.
well, to be honest i don't know what is froyo nor eclair, i just know that froyo is commonly linked with 2.2 FW and eclair with 2.1. i know that when i've plugged my phone to Kies it uploaded to 2.2...
could you please link me that second program?

To OverClock your device, you need an OC Kernel. Download one of these :
1) FuguMod I5800 (froyo) v2.2 (Bleeding Edge)
2) FuguMod Ultra Pre-Realease
Now flash this as 'One Package' using Odin (the same way you flash a ROM).
Install Set CPU from Here
Open SetCPU, and move the slider upto 1300MHz (/1366MHz) and you now have an OverClocked device
thanks, i'll try it right away, just one thing...which is the safest OC setting?

800MHz is by far the most stable. But if thats what you want, flash This Kernel.
well, i'm trying to get a bit more "juice" out of my phone, i bought it exclusively so that i don't spend big bucks on the iPhone and i was thinking if 1100 or 1000 were stable enough, as i've read somewhere that on a certain ROM 1300 runs perfectly without any bugs or overheating problems...
could you now please help me configure my phone to lets say 1100Mhz and what other options should i tick as it's a bit confusing...

There are no 'options' that are to be ticked. Download one of the 2 Kernels I gave links to in my earlier post. And flash it as 'One Package' using Odin (the same way you flash a ROM). And use SetCPU to do the rest. Nothing else to be done.

Use my guide but with an appropriate firmware from samfirmware.
Not a hell lot you can do about the download speed. I suspect it might have something to do with hotfile - I get incredibly ****ty speed from hotfile, but not from any other file sharing service.
There should be a few threads lying around in the general section about stock roms. Try downloading from there instead of ****ty hotfile.

Before you flash anything you gotta make sure you have 2 backup plans. One is, of course, the nandroid backup. The other is having a stock firmware file you can flash with Odin in case everything goes to hell.
In my case, I have a JPU stock firmware stored on my home computer and on my work laptop. Every time I screw up so badly everything is FUBAR I go back to JPU and works like a charm.
Ah also, along with the JPU I have a CF-Root flashable file for JPU (just needs to be Froyo specific, not firmware release specific) so I can have root.
That's the only advice that hasn't been given to you already.
In reality, the Galaxy S is pretty hard to really brick. The bootloader may get corrupted but there's almost always a way out.
ok thanks guys +1
i will flash my phone with 2.3 and when I'am bored with it i'll flash it with some custom rom

Hello and welcoming myself to this new community of SGS 2 users. Coming from the HTC Desire section, I am quite confounded (entirely my own fault, of course) by the sheer confusion between the "Original Development" and the, uh, "Derivative Development" sections. More on that later, but...
Now what's REALLY confusing me is the complete lack of a start to finish rooting guide, or even a CWM guide for the SGS2 in the forum. Does anyone around have good link, and also where should I go to for my first ROM? Any ideas?
Go for the big well-known roms to start. VillainROM, Cognition or Lightning Rom. They all have tutorials to flash the specific roms when coming from stock.
I came from the Desire too, the weird thing about the SGS2 is that you flash roms that have the root installed in there. So you flash a rom with a rooted kernel inside of it, your phone is rooted. Change the kernel only to a stock one, root is gone.
So check the rom threads.

The usual steps would be:

- flash cf-root
- choose your custom rom
From here onwards, its an ocean of info.

There are no pretty guides because , its so extremely easy to root SGS2 , all you do is flash "cf kernel with CWM" via ODIN = done you rooted
Then you have CWM recovery and you can flash any SGS2 ROM. No need for any hacks or exploits.

I was confounded by the mere mention of ODIN. Apparently, everybody knew where to download/get it and how to use it but nobody provided a link. I sorted that out anyway.
