Help please - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hi guys,
I think my galaxy s is knackered - it boots then goes to a black screen and vibrates.
I can get into recovery mode and set defaults but still no joy.
Now i have read i need to flash my phone using odin and my original firmware - but where do i get these and how do i do it?
Im on 3 UK if it makes any difference.
Thanks

samfirmware.com
You're welcome!

How about we read the rules and learn where to post...hint hint, his isn't development
As the previous poster said, make an account on samfirmware.com and download the UK firmware of your choice. You may as well get one of the official (or even JPU if you're feeling adventurous) Froyo builds while you're at it.
It's almost impossible to brick SGS for good (emphasis on almost)

Search in general here. You will find all the roms.

Thanks guys
I have Searched but cant find my original rom, i have managed to flash the 2.2.1 rom thats about but would like to know whats the best stock rom at the moment?
And whats with the roms with different pit numbers? can i use either?
Thanks again

JPO, JPU. Those two are the most popular ones at the moment.
Pit files dictate how the internal memory of the phone is partitioned. Most ROMs use 512.pit, but a few of the beta Froyo ones have specific pit files. Just follow the instructions on samfirwmare.
And again, not Q&A section. Go away.

yes I cant get to download mode or recovery
Same problem. My vibrant does not boot Tried the battery method, removing battery, holding volume buttons while putting it back in. Does not work Any other ideas I could try ?
DEAD Vibrant after OTA
Yesterday I borked my Vibrant. Spent alllll night using Odin to get it back to factory and then allowed the Tmobile ota update figuring that it worked fine before. Well it went to reboot and never came back. BLACK screen. Left it plugged in while I ate breakfast with tears dripping in my pancakes (I went to bed at 6am!) and I noticed the top of the phone was very hot. Not the battery the top.
Sometimes I hate technology but technology always hates me!
Would it be worth building a DIY plug?

First of all, what the HECK were you trying to flash onto your device? The only thing you should be using ODIN for is JFD or JI6. Those are the only official T-Mobile firmware you should be flashing to restore from a brick besides Eugene's Froyo, but that's for like emergencies.
Second of all, If you have the Bell Vibrant, this is the wrong forum.
Finally, there is no ODIN 3.1. You must be using Odin3 1.0 which is VERY unstable. Please do more research before you attempt to do things to your phone.
Address these concerns and we can proceed.

If Odin3 v1.0 is unstable you should offer the ignorant massess here the correct version to use including a link to it.

Listen here little guy, I was talking to him not you. I asked him three questions to verify what he did because if he doesn't even have the right model phone then this is the INCORRECT forum. The firmware he was trying to flash is incorrect and not stock. T959UVJE8 looks to be firmware for the Vibrant but stock firmware is T959UVJFD and the OTA update is T959UVJI6.
Posting in "our" forum Mr. 3 posts? You are telling me to do more research? That's funny.
Everything I mentioned can be found by simply going to the development section and looking in the Bible. I already mentioned that you need JFD and JI6. The latest version of ODIN is 1.7. All of this can be found in less than 2 minutes.

Honestly, you need to start by looking through there. It seems you both have a lot to learn and spoon feeding you isn't going to solve the bigger problem. Hope you get it resolved. Look through there, find the files you need (you need to get use to looking in the Bible) and come back. If you still have problems after READING, I will walk you through it. Good day.

TMobile Vibrant. It does not even start. So, Odin is not even in the picture. I was flashing the 3 button fix for vibrant using update.zip method. It flashed successfully, but after flashing, it never came back on.
I managed to get my Vibrant into DL mode the other day when it was just a black screen by...
-take out battery, sim, and sd card
-plug phone into wall charger (not computer)
-hold volume buttons while popping the battery back in
it took me a couple times, but i guess the wall charger gets a better jolt?
fyi: my vibrant is not hardware locked
hope this works for you

You don't need the pit file just put the tar file under PDA and make sure only auto reboot is checked

I suggest you check the wiki. You will find odin + pit, the proper dk28, & good instructions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700
Why go to dk28 when there is ec05 out? Try to flash a rom based on ec05. Also viper synergy is based on eb13 at the moment. Going g to dk28 is not a good idea. It was a test build. To many bugs compared to the builds we have now with the custom kernels

nice i wasnt sure if you could use the old roms on new software
Wiki has all the information that is needed.
Yes u can odin to anything at any time.
Some roms can run on higher modems than there built for (a dk28 rom on ec05 modem).
U really only to odin modems for upgrading, rom zips contain the rest.

Hey Guys,
Iam trying to flash my samsung vibrant to a new ROM. But what if I wont like it and want to go back to an original firmware my phone came with? I tried searching answers but there are multiple ones and I cant understand it so figured I ask here. Can I somehow backup my current version or download it so I can go back to just stock firmware that the phone came out the box?
Thanks for your help
You can make a back up with rom manager or you can learn to odin back to stock. Check the stickies or search for more info.

thanks, tried rom manager but cant get it to backup need to look into odin backup
Odin doesn't do backups, you can flash back your stock Froyo rom using it though.

In order to make a backup, you need to be rooted, in order to root you need to have an update.zip file on your phone in order for the file to work you need to be on 2.1 firmware, you can probably find the file stickied in the development section, or q/a section.

Odin is the ticket. It doesn't do a backup - it restores your phone to it's fresh out of the box state. There are 2 files you need, but they're easy to find.
But blaqr0d is going to be right - once you start flashing you will only want to go back to stock if you encounter a problem.
Here's a vid I think is very helpful.
OP, please read my stickies in my signature. You will learn a lot and not waste others time.

Cognition, Villian, and Litening ROMs are the most popular in my opinion.
I know the Cognition ROM will let you overclock. Not sure about the others.
Theres really no need to overclock, this phone is lighning fast as it is and you can run it at 800Mhz with no noticable drop in speed....
Read up on odin, don't bother overclocking (as stated), buy a jig off ebay and don't rush into flashing ROMs (at least til your jig arrives)
and well done for winning

Hi
sorry if it sounds stupid but wots a jig? Lol
A jig could well be your "get out of jail free" card. It will enable you to get the phone into download mode should you screw up flashing a rom. It also resets the download counter should you need to return the phone.
Search ebay for galaxy s 2 jig, only a few pounds.

Yep, just look for your firmware version in about phone, grab the CF-Root kernel that matches the firmware version (Last characters like KE4, KE7, etc.) and then flash with Odin. For Odin, simply install Kies to get the proper drivers installed, load up odin, check PDA, look for the .tar file and flash. Pretty straightforward!
Keep in mind that some ROMs come pre-rooted (Like Cognition) because they use Cyanogenmod capable kernels (Supplied by codeworkxx from CM)

TOTAL N00B: Where do I start?

I have the SCH-I400 (hardware version i400.0.6) , still with stock software:
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: S:i400.0.6V.DL17
Kernel version: 2.6.29
Build number: SCH-I400.DL17
I would like to upgrade it to Android 2.2 (or higher) with minimal risk of bricking it.
Where do I start?
Are there special tools that I need?
Is there a difference between "firmware" and "ROM"?
Which is the latest stable firmware/ROM that you can recommend?
Is it possible to try a particular firmware/ROM without replacing the current firmware/ROM?
What do I need to do to save the current stock firmware/ROM so that I can restore it later (if I ever want to).
I am basically clueless at this point, so any tip or link would be very much appreciated.
Thank You!

That's what I did before posting my question but the best I could find was this HOWTO for Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10.
My understanding is that instructions that are good for one brand/model are not necessarily good for another. I couldn't find such a HOWTO for the Samsung Continuum SCH-I400 and I really don't want to brick my phone just to find out that I missed or misunderstood a step. Can you help?
For example, I found in this thread a reference to something called odin:
Is this the recommended way to flash the Samsung Continuum SCH-I400?
Is v1.85 the latest & greatest?
Is it possible to try a particular version without flashing it? (I have almost 8GB of free SD space)
Do I have to root the device before attempting any firmware trial or flash?
Just look in the development section
Literally all of your questions have been answered throughout the forum..
1. you'll want to download odin (or heimdall if you're on mac/linux)
2. firmware is the version your phone is running, and a ROM is a custom OS. for example, you're firmware is 2.1-update1. however, you are using the stock ROM. for the samsung continuum, as far as i know there is only one other ROM on 2.1-update1 (which is the firmware) and that's the debinged/debloated DL17 ROM (which is the custom OS).
3. just go through the development system and look through the ROM's and look at the comments to see if there are any bugs. currently the latest firmware is 2.2 but i don't know if there are any bugs.
4. not quite sure what you mean by that
5. what you're talking about is a nandroid backup. to do a nandroid backup you have to get clockwork recovery. just check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1057072

He is talking about running a ROM off his SD card. That's probably the one unanswered question. From what I know, not you can't.
You have a LOT of reading and research to do before you're ready to do any of this stuff. Read through the Android Development sub-forum.... Then read it again... if anything is confusing, read it again. You can SERIOUSLY mess up your phone if you don't know what you're doing... Once you understand it all, then try it out.
My advice would be to first do research on the terminology. Once you know what words like flash, rom, odin, cwm, cwm cyan vs. yellow, recovery, and what things like a tar.md5, and update.zip, mean and do, it will be a lot easier to understand what you are reading. Google is your friend. Most of what I've learned has come from there. Also, peruse different forums. I understand that this one can get a little techincal for a noob. I still have to scratch my head about half of the time and think about what I'm reading before it makes sense. It will come, slowly. Just save yourself a lot of headache, and read read read, and if you have ANY doubts, find the answer BEFORE you start the process.
This video helps a lot with cwm, and flashing via odin

Start by googling root and cintinuum and look for addictivetips tutorial and then look for how to install clockwork mod recovery (this was the difficult part imo) should also be at addictivetips. By time your done you should at least be familliar with programs involved and asking troublshoot Q's instead of general "how do I" Q's......

There is a great tutorial on getting to 2.2.2 in the EC07 clean thread in development.
The quickest method ive use so far (i am newbie 2 rootin etc) is download the tool to root 'superoneclick' then youl have to search for the correct flash tool for your device, then download cwm recovery to backup/restore and install your 'mod rom'. Theres some very good roms about on this site,im only on a x1o mini pro came with 2.1 and s.e refused to release any futher updates 4 this model!but its now running either 2.3.9 or 2.3.5 quite smoothly ..made up ,so u should be able to find and try later than 2.3 and choose which rom you prefer.

well you dont have to start by rooting your phone... rooted roms flashed by odin work on stock 2.1 thats how i did it... i used superoneclick only once, on ec07 stock. havent had to since, cause i flashed roms with odin/cwm that are rooted and deodexed.
