[Q] Noob, just need to unlock SIM - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I recently acquired a MyTouch 4g and want to SIM unlock it. I've been doing some reading here, and it looks like Gfree and the ultimate s=off root can achieve the results, however, it looks a bit too tech-y for what I need. I just want to be able to use a different carrier, that's it. I don't need different ROMs, or anything, just to be able to use my phone. Any user-friendlier alternatives? Or a dumbed-down way to do it? Thanks

You could call T-Mobile and ask them to send you the unlock code and instructions on how to do it. Takes about 24 hours for them to find your code and email it and the instructions. It's very easy to do. They will ask you for the iemi and an email address. Takes about 5 minutes to do

As long as he has an account with T-mobile currently, been a customer for 40 days on post paid or 60 days on prepaid. No account means no way for a rep to do the request. The electronic form requires an account that has been using the phone.

Doing the engineering radio s-off should sim unlock, according to the guides. It's one of the stickies in the android development section

Hi,
I perma rooted my phone and have su privilege. However, when I put in my Rogers SIM card it still says no sim card available. I was under the assumption that this phone used all GSM carrier frequencies, so is my phone not unlocked properly?
I will try a Wind sim car later today.

unlocking t-mobile G2

Anyone know how or where to unlock the new G2? I want to use it with ATT LOL
Is there a method or a website I can get the unlock code?
Thanks!
Ps. I had the samsung captivate but the gps and lag on that thing made me return it. That's why I bought the G2.
You do realize that it won't work on ATT's 3G ; only EDGE?
Also, you might want to wait for the NA version of the Desire Z going to Canada ; you might pick up one of those since they have the 850Mhz band used for ATT's 3G.
About the unlock, you will have to wait for the phone to officially launch all over, and then unlock codes should pop up soon on eBay and other such sites.

Yes I'm aware that it will only work on edge.
The disire z is running sense which I don't want. I want as much stock android 2.2 on the phone. Besides the discontinued nexus one, this is my only choice.
Thanks for your reply.

Or.....if you're an existing T-mobile customer you can call them and request the unlock code.....That always seems to be the easiest way.
Yup, if you've bought it from them, and have been a customer for quite a while, just tell them that you need the unlock code since you travel a lot, and they should give it to you.
I see your point about being totally stock, however, some users have flashed the G2 ROM on the Desire Z with no hiccups, and thus getting Stock Android.
would you guys say that t-mobile can give me the unlock code even if did not buy the phone from them? lets say i bought it at best buy. i do have t-mobile account for my brother. but i bought the g2 full price from best buy.
As long as you have an account they should do it.

have your brother call them and tell CS that he bought the G2 and is planning an international trip and wants the unlock code. Simple
you should buy a desire z and flash a vanilla ROM on it so you'll get 3G support. Why get a super nice smart phone and only use EDGE?

You don't even need to say that. Just say you want it unlocked--you just need 40 days of active service. Check T-Mobile's SIM Unlock policy, it's the first hit on Google for "T-Mobile SIM Unlock".
Well my brother has had his account for over 5 years already. Well try calling and ask
For the unlock code because I "am leaving the country for travel" lol

Once its unlocked its unlocked . I always get mines done via tmobile live chat because u dont get all that chit chat just and ok all put that order n for u an ur have the code in 1-7days.
Also note to enter the code u must put a non tmobile sim n the phone then it will ask for unlock code. Thats how they all have worked but I havent unlocked my g2 yet tho

What do they ask for exactly?
Do they charge u for the unlock code?
stupid question but....
I don't get signal in my new house, but my friends on verison and att do. If I unlock my sim, does that mean I can use those towers when i don't have signal, or does that just mean I could switch my carrier and keep my phone? I had a rooted G1 and when I traveled to my mom's house who's town did not have t-mobile yet, I was able to use thier local carriers signal, I didn't know if everyone could do that, or if it was because my phone was rooted or what. anywho, sorry for rambling, but if someone could kindly make me less stupid be answering my question...

when we say "Unlock" we mean that you can put any simcard and the phone will pick up signal depending on the carrier.
if there are no towers near you, if you have roaming enabled, your phone will roam using other towers but they may charge you for that as far as i know.
Just called Tmobile to unlock
They said I could, that they would give me the code, but that the G2 is still not in their system, so they can't request unlock codes for this phone.
They asked me to call again in a few days.
Does that make sense?

[Q]Unlocking Carrier

Okay i will b getting my HD2 today and its on T-Mo and im on ATT i know i need to unlock it to use it on Att but i want to run Andriod on it.
Now the question would be do i have to unlock it prior to using andriod via nand or can i just unlock it in andriod or will it remove the unlock ?
There's no hack to unlock it, you're gonna need a code. Reportedly unlock codes work fine in Android, but you might just as well unlock it in WinMo. Flashing another firmware does not remove the unlock code.

ebay cost me £6 and took 12hours. The local shop wanted 30 and the phone for 2 days
I'm not sure but I think you can call T-Mobile and they will give you the code for free. There was a post some time ago talking about this. Maybe you can look it up and see what people have done to get the code.
I will be trying to get the code 1st off of Tmobile see if that works i spoke to a buddy of mine that works there. He said that they have to give it to you no matter what. Since i dont have there service i will have my firend call it in and she been a customer for ages of theres.
i will post back once i get a response
*Edit*
So we called last night they said 24hrs been about so no email yet.
I got the code its unlocked but now no 3g speeds that is so disappointing
No 3g speeds on aT&t? Well that's expected since aT&t operates on 3g bands the HD2 doesn't support.

The only way you would be able to use AT&T network is if you buy the Telstra HD2 T9193 other than that your just going to be stuck on edge.

[Q] MT4G on the verizon network?

Ok 1st off I'm a noob, sorry if this question upsets anyone, I have looked and read a lot of threads. I have just switched carriers from Tmobile to Verizon. Before anyone gets upset I could not get service at my work on my Tmobile, and since we have a Verizon tower on site it pretty much what everyone uses. Well i'm trying to unlock me MT4G so I can use it with my verizon sim card. I have already rooted and simlock off via gfree. what my next step?

Umm... right.
Completely incompatible networks. Sorry.
There are plenty of nice Verizon Androids. If you don't like the Verizon phone you already have, trade the MT4G for a Verizon Android.
Next step: sell mt4g and get verizon compatible phone.

thanks guys that was what i thought just was hoping it wasn't the case. i picked up a new android today but was hoping to continue using my old one since it was fairly new as a back up. I have both the MT4G and 3Gslide from my old Tmobile acct.
Poor bastard. No wifi at work? Get a verizon mifi and use that with wifi calling. Ha!

Unlock

I have AT&T and am trading an unlocked HD7 so can I unlock this MyTouch4G VIA root or any other way? I don't have the money to pay for an unlock code.

I hope you know you will not get HSPA+ speeds. The bands are different.
And look in my signature. You'll see a link for ./gfree rooting. It'll allow you to SIM unlock the phone.
Well the guy told me it was unlocked and was for Tmobile and I have AT&T and so I don't need the high quality speeds, I usually don't use my phone for internet anyways. But I do want to know what the difference is between this MyTouch4G section on XDA and the Tmobile MyTouch4G Section?

This is the T-Mobile Mytouch 4G section...?
Only TmoUS carries the Mytouch 4G, though Canada carries this phone, but with a different name. They call it the HTC Panache

Info on unlocking

I have a few brief questions regarding unlocking and such thanks in advance.
So I recently bought a new phone and want to this give this phone to my Girl but she's in at&t.Would it be possible for her to use it even though its a T-Mobile phone and she doesn't have a data plan with at&t?
Another question is this glacier is rooted so is it unlock? or is there a total diffieent process to "unlock " this phone? so maybe she can use it for other carrier..
Thanks for any input would be appreciated, good day

1a) this this is a GSM phone, yes you can use it on any GSM network if you have a SIM card from your carrier. IF the HSPA(+) bands are different you will not get HSPA(+), you will only get EDGE/edge signal or lower.
1b) AT&T might pick up that she is using a smart phone and automatically want to charge for for a data, IF you delete the APNs it should prevent them from "talking" to her phone.
2) Rooting doesn't equal SIM unlocking. You can be unlocked w/o being rooted, or be rooted w/o being unlocked.
