Hi,
Well, now that we've (almost) got Froyo on our Galaxy 3s (i5800/i5801), do you think now would be a proper time to get something done to port CyanogenMod to it? I dunno why exactly it hasn't been done yet, looking at the popularity of the phone. We can request the CM developers/maintainers to port it or if someone is willing to do it themselves, that'll be good.

good idea - I've red today an article about the new release and improvements in it. Would be great
well ask this question cyanogen's forum. Hopefully they will take note.
Else one of us will have to take initiative and ask them for help
see here: hxxp://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/6711-samsung-galaxy-3-gt-i5800/
Well, that thread's been there since the 12th of September, and I don't think anyone has noticed it yet. What I think we should do is that one of us should PM any of the mods on the CM Board, and then they'll do something about it.

Have you done this? Any replies? CyanogenMod would be really cool
Umm, I haven't approached them yet, I will soon, as soon as I get my phone. Till then anyone who's a member in the CM Forums should PM them.
Guys, please keep in mind that the cyanogen team can not do a port to a phone they do not own, so there are two possibilities,
start porting ourselves, like the Galaxy S comunity did
ask the devs if one would consider porting if he gets a "fundraised" SG3 and if so start a bounty...
We can try porting it ourselves. I'm in. I'll do as much as I can. I have some experience in coding. Anyone else who wants to help can join. I will search their wiki and ask them instructions on how to port CM to G3.
The fundraiser method can also be done, unfortunately, I can't donate much. If others can, then we can do something.
You can't port it yet: Samsung haven't yet deliver the source for 2.6.32 kernels. They suck.
Is it the same kernel used in Android 2.2? If that's so, we should have it soon. 2.2 on G3 is on its way, and it should be on Samsung OSP soon.
Can anyone tell. ..wat are bugs in leaked froyo for g3...???

Is reading the appropriate thread too much to ask? See Android development forum!
Okay, so I'm getting my phone tomorrow. Anyone volunteering for porting CM to our G3s? I will now ask them from instructions/guidelines on porting.
Im in.. ill do as much help as i can..

I could be of help. Lets start something
Hey everyone,
Us Streak users have a bounty waiting for a dev to port over honeycomb for our device, it's up to $310! So if you're up to make $310 help us port over Honeycomb to the Dell Streak 7. The dev support for this device is really lacking
I know the source files for honeycomb for the xoom are there.. If there are no devs willing to do it can someone point me in the direction of how to port over a rom? I'm a programmer but never have done android or linux dev. I've always been a windows front end/back end developer
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11723649#post11723649
there's not much point in starting until the aosp code is out
I thought it would be out by now but.. hopefully it will be soon
as I have been in contact with a Dev from the Notion Ink Adam's forum ( known him awhile because I also own the Adam )...
it all started when a user asked the question of switching the internal/external sd card... and well, as you can see... us adam owner have that option for awhile now.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15719930&postcount=10
So the Dev was kind enough to sent me the source.... Could one of you talented Dev take a look at it and maybe make it work for our Iconia devices ?
Thank You !!
P.s He also mentioned that he's working on a new version that is more Honeycomb based (using fragments)... and most likely I'll get that source too once he thinks it's ready
As our device is dying in support I feel that we need to develop a large development team (10+ people) that will work on ICS for our gtablet. I mean after all our device is capable of running it ( Tegra 250). If you would like to be part of this team shoot an email to [email protected] explaining why you want to be part of this team and what you can contribute. Thank you.
You know that you need a new kernel for ICS to work properly right? Ch3vr0n5 and dpw13 are currently working on it over at slatedroid.
lol. i was gonna post something similar to this in the next couple days. I made the n1 ics port and started work today trying to get ics booting on my gtab. I think first order of business is to start a room on freenode.

guys,
pm jazzruby, tek112 or fosser2, ch3vron..they are also over @ slatedroid viewsonic gtablet forum..
they have been working on a kernel with hw accel for HC3.2 and ICS. There are been some teaser pics by fosser with ics running on his gtablet.
I'm sure they could use your help...
kernel dev in the gtablet laboratory forum as well.

The CyanogenMod team has also said they will continue to support our gTabs so I am looking forward to CM9 which hopefully will drop some time in January.

uhm based on what you quote nothing is said there we dont have qsd in our gtabs...
If anyone is interested and has dev experience shoot me a pm and i'll get you up to date. thanks
Yea upon further investigation there are already a few people working on this. In fact a quick google search will find you a booting cm9 for gtab. (i dont want to post the link since it is pre alpha and not my rom) but the gtab is not lacking devs by any means. (they just arent on xda)
oh and forget my post about the irc room there is already one. but again you must find it yourself
dont know why the pic is green but whatever

I appreciate that you didn't post the link to this, and please anyone else who "finds" this build (yes its out there) please do not post it anywhere either. It is extremely beta and has many problems (to the point where you would have to open your tablet to push the internal reset button). Thanks
i really don't appreciate this elitist dev crap. "yeah there's a place where you can talk about it, and a build you can get to try it, but i'm not going to tell you where." i completely understand that the devs are doing work that we (I) can't do and that they're entitled to a bit of leeway for that but if they're going to talk about their work in public and post shots, they're just doing it to get a rise out of people. there is no valid reason to restrict people from trying out alpha builds except to keep others out of their club.
of course, if you want to install something against the advice of someone who knows a lot more than you do, that's your perogative but you assume all responsibility. it does absolutely make sense that the devs want ZERO whining or "bug reporting" from alpha builds. ostensibly, the devs and those with technical acumen are trying to protect newbs who might fry their tabs. to my thinking however, nothing would make someone learn faster not to flash random **** than a $300 brick. we're all intelligent humans and not children, however, so

note: THIS IS NOT A DAILY DRIVER. i tested it on a 1.2BL tab. i had to turn off the getprop script asserts to get it to install, which is usually bad form. it boots, but we have no hw acceleration, no wifi, no camera, no sound, no usb storage or adb... etc. this is just a taste, proof that work is being done.

I realize you're just trying to show people where it is, but if the devs don't want you pouring out THEIR work to the world just yet, I think it's best to listen.

There are good reasons why the devs don't want this posted. Its not to spite anyone or rub it in their faces. 1 they don't want to be liable for someone elses damaged tablet, 2 do you know if the voltage regulators aren't correct it could fry your gtablet permanently, 3 they're a good hard working group who is doing this for zero dollars in their spare personal time and only want to put out a good working product. Have a little respect for their wishes. Be warned that alpha build could permanent damage your gtablet.

Well aren't you cool, learning how to use google and ****.
EDIT: Ok now that I'm done fuming about this. The release that was posted is an early build of CM9. It is based off of Android 4.0.3. The kernel that is included with that release is linux 2.6.36. Since then, we have now moved onto 2.6.39. In no way is the "dev" group elitist. At any time anyone could have joined the IRC group and asked for a download link to the latest kernel/rom. The reason this has not been released yet is because of the "power button" script. When the power button is tripped at random times it causes the entire tablet to freeze up. The only way to "reset" the tablet is to open it up and press the internal reset button, thereby voiding any warranty from Viewsonic. Another issue that I have seen with using this kernel is possible damage to the camera. Just a few days ago I learned that while running this kernel the camera heats up and is hot to the touch, almost to the point of burning yourself. I have since then, unplugged the camera from the mainboard, to hopefully stop damage to the camera (I'm guessing that whoever has run this already without unplugging their camera, has potentially fried it). In short, installing this rom does give you some latest and greatest software to play with, but with it comes risks. DO NOT INSTALL THIS ROM/KERNEL IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO RISK DAMAGING YOUR TABLET.
ps. As a dev. team, we will be releasing HC with a .36 kernel that supports hw accel very soon. Keep your heads up for that release. Hopefully this release can hold people over until everything becomes more stable. Thank you all for patiently waiting.

Kids.....they think they know everything! Haha, just kidding but hopefully maybe people understand why now. Im pumped about the HC release! Im tired of froyo and can't wait to play the THD games that required 2.3+. Thank you and the rest of the team so much for your hard work. Im not a programmer but im going to start digging for the technical info you need for the camera.

Thanks to all the Devs working on this stuff for us! That said if you guys need any testing done just shoot me a PM, I rarely use my tablet any more and have cracked it open plenty of times for other hardware testing. I don't have much time to work on software anymore, but am more than willing to test stuff for you if you don't wish to risk your tablets. Again thanks for all your work.

Hi,
I just thought it could be worth mentioning that there's a device request thread on Cyanogenmod forums for our beloved Idol 3 :
http://forum.cyanogenmod.org/topic/111850-alcatel-onetouch-idol-3-55/
May I suggest that everyone who wants a Cyanogen rom to be ported on our phones should take a minute to register there and add their voices to the request ?
There's already 24 posts in this thread
Already demanded it
Cool
Just made a post, but later found out that posting a request for CM does not guarantee anything. In the sticky it states
Now, what does this mean to you? First off, requesting anywhere in the CM forum, the CM Blog, or the Facebook/Google+/Twitter accounts for device XX to be supported is probably a waste of your time and anybody who reads said request. CyanogenMod does not work on device requests as there is no guaranteeing that a current CM maintainer is even interested in the device. Additionally, its not as simple as 'porting' code, the device trees must be coded from scratch and made to work with the AOSP sourced code and CM enhancements. This takes a large amount of time and effort, especially when the device's OEM fails to release the latest version of Android for it. Second, in hoping a worthy developer sees the post and decides to take up the project... well, that is probably just wishful thinking. Many developers do not like interacting with end users (too much finger pointing between both devs and users or anger directed at the devs for something working other than how the user expects - it happens far too often); because of that, many developers don't frequent the forum (or if they do, they only view the forums for the devices they maintain).
The best way to get a device official support is not requesting it from the CM team, but learning how to do it yourself or encouraging a maintainer of an unofficial build to submit their code for review. Many developers will work on unofficial ports on the xda-developers forum, so that would be the first place to check out. If there isn't any work currently being done, you can attempt it yourself. There is a pretty in-depth article in the wiki explaining a lot of the steps of porting a device (as the bottom of the wiki states, nothing can cover every single process of porting, but it is a really great start).

So it would need to be someone willing to take the time out to buy an Idol 3, if one has not done so already, and then port the code for our device out of their free time. And considering the userbase for this phone does not seem all that large to be noticed, I'm not sure if CM will work on our phones anytime soon.
Well thank you very much for your posts and your research.
I'm afraid you're right, but we had to ask
Let's not lose hope too soon anyway, the fact that the device request thread exist seems to be a good point. I don't know if any device had received a CM port because of this thread, but... why not ?
I've red that Alcatel and cyanogen had been in contact for a tablet. The project has been cancelled but this might suggest they could have access to resources that would ease their work (pilots ?).
Original rom on the idol is pretty much stock Android, this is a good thing too (well I'm not a developer but I guess it's easier when it's close to the original).
And, like you said, even if the user base is not that large, chances that someone from cyanogen got seduced by the idol (like we did) are still possible... (this is the moment where everybody crosses their fingers ).
Anyway thanks again !
The thread has now 31 posts (ah no, 32 webgaffeur just added his voice !)
Thanks to all the people that took some time to post there, let's not give it up : it's time to flood the forum !
i had posted the github with source for the phone but no one seems to respond not even one single admin? we can ask other devs crdroid pacrom dirty unicorns paranoid etc.
Alas, I think Brian is right : it's probably a waste of time posting on the device request thread
I checked devices with a lot more posts and views than ours and... nothing from a dev (like huyawei and Asus zenforce 5).
Asking to other rom devs will probably be useless also. Our only hope is that a competent developer buy an idol and start working on it... If this happens, I'm pretty sure he will share his work on XDA.
Well, meanwhile we already have root, twrp and xposed working, so I guess the best thing to do is to customise out phones till it suits our needs and that's all.
Let's hope also that Alcatel will continue to push updates (marshmallow ?)
Anyway thanks for your efforts Gecko.
Sorry, didn't mean to rain on anyones parade. Just wanted to let everyone know what the stickied thread on the CM forum for device requests stated. I'm not saying it won't ever happen, just that it might take some time to get a valued reputable dev who owns, or wouldn't mind purchasing the Idol 3 and working on it for us. Most dev's accept donations of devices that want development on from the users, so if we were able to locate and contact a reputable dev, asking them if we were to provide them with the device, would they mind porting or creating a ROM for it. It's worth a try. Maybe start a bounty or fundraiser etc. I myself do not know of any dev's that would be willing to work on this device as the ones I do know of have only worked on Samsung devices.
I don't know any dev at all
P.S. : thread has 34 answers now !
