So I've had the chance to play with the Thrive for a day and here are my initial impressions.
Thickness:
Compared to the TF the Thrive is not that much thicker. (see pics) And although it's slightly heavier the TF the Thrive feels a lot easier to hold. I think it has to do with weight distribution of the devices. The TF feels like a lot of it's weight is towards the center where the Thrive feels like it's more evenly distributed throught the tab. Also the Thrive's corners is rounder then the TF which makes holding the Thrive on the corners a lot easier then when holding the TF in the same position.
Screen:
The Thrive has absolutely zero screen bleed. With that said it is not a IPS display, the whites on the screen looks yellowish compared to the TF and the blacks are deeper on the TF which also has better contrast. The TF display is better then the Toshiba (not by much) but you also have to deal with the light bleed that every TF has.
Build Quality:
We all know about the issues with the TF. The Thrive has the plastic backing which is quite nice to hold and there is no creaking. However there are a few issues...the cover that houses the usb, mini usb, and hdmi ports seems really flimsy and easy to snap off. Also I'm already noticing that the screen in the upper corner is lifting upwards above the plastic backing...similar to what the galaxy tab 10.1 is having. I also had the sleep of death happen to me twice already on the Thrive where on the TF I have yet to experience it. (My TF is rooted though on prime1.5)
So far I'm pretty impressed with the Thrive...it plays my music and videos easily from the usb and the sd card. I can also open up my files directly from the sd card where I had to move my files from the micro sd onto the internal for my TF to read them. However the screen popping up is bothering me...i can push it back down and it will stay for a bit but then it'll just pop right back up. As for which one is better I cannot say. They both are great and offer different options. They both have their strengths and weaknesses over one another. I can tell you that you won't be disappointed with either device.

my B50 has zero light bleed so dont generalize, the constant whiney *****ing is getting old.
Jesus your TF has some serious bleed. I have like 2 tiny spots barely noticable unless in a dim room looking at a black screen. And yes i run at full brightness.

I don't understand why people get so defensive about their purchases ... besides, I didn't think OP was whining.
Anyway, thanks for the review. That sucks about the screen. I was hoping the Thrive would exhibit better build quality than the TF, but I guess that's too much to ask for this first crop of HC tablets.

its so funny how people get so defensive about their products...lol. at no point was i whining. my whole review was subjective. Take it how you like...i don't give a ****. i'm just trying to help those who are on the fence about jumping ship or not.
zero light bleed? please share...because it is known that IPS tech has light bleed. even my g2x has light bleed.

yeah the screen popping up is starting to get annoying. and the sleep of death also. yeah no matter what tab we go with there will be some issues.
To me, the Thrive looks extremely thick compared to the TF. But yeah, I've heard it's very nice to hold. Don't really like the looks of the Thrive either but that's pretty subjective. But the ports on the Thrive win me over on this one. It's such a pain to connect my dock just so I can transfer a movie off a USB device then disconnect everything to watch again... oh I'm lazy...
Also, am I the only one who thought the light bleed was a cool feature when I first got my tablet? Seriously, I had no clue it was a bad thing until I came onto these forums and heard all the complaining. I love the subtle light bleed on mine... maybe there's something wrong with me...
i still think the xformer is a better device even tho we have to deal with bleeding
Sorry to say but your views on the thickness are way off. Even your pics show that the Thrive is WAY thicker. The "Sharper" Rounded corners on the TF make for better handling as well. If they get TOO rounded it makes for a more slippery experience.
The Thrive looks stupid with the silver camera thingy though. If they would have blended that in it would have looked 100 times better. IMHO that is.
To the person that is whining about hearing about the TF light bleed.....TOUGH because it is true.
zero light bleed on my TF..maybe just me being lucky....... and the Thrive is way too thick...
tbh..the main reason that I'm keepin the TF is because its kb dock... all other factors like weight, screen are important but not a deal breaker
771 gr is too heavy
Well, for a non Ips screen the Thrive looks OK. The light bleed on the TF is awful, that would have been returned if it were mine.
Thanks to the OP for the comparison.
holy hemorrhaging batman! call an ambulance, that thing's gonna bleed to death.
tq745, thanks for a great comparison report, meter clicked
To me the Thrive seems to be built to operate in portrait mode. Look at the orientation of the control buttons, they are correct in portrait mode and sideways in landscape mode. To me it seems like a BIG phone... LOL
I don't get the hostility from members that don't have light bleed on their units, I know I would be happy not angry. I'm gonna start a poll and see actually what kind of percentage of members have light bleed...
I also have massive bleeds on my transformer, and the battery drains way to fast

I seen that the other day. It reminds me of the picture on the Internet with the guy talking on a HUGE iphone next to his face. Portrait mode looks funny to me and I hate playing this way. This where I liked the ipad because landscape gave you a little extra room but portrait was also usable. 16x9 is meh for me. I'd wish they'd stay 4:3.

My TF has no light bleed. I do acknowledge that some of them do, but why are people assuming that just because theirs has it that all of them do? It's an ignorant assumption and it leads people to false beliefs.
The reason people on this forum think the TF is so flawed is because a handful of members complained about the same thing then people read their complaints and rather than testing the device for themselves just "assumed" their TF had defects also. I'm willing to gamble that most of the people here complaining about light bleed don't even know what it is. I'm also willing to bet that those very same people don't even know what an IPS screen is or how it functions...
Let's stop making generalizations and stop trying to make the TF out to be a low quality/budget device because it's far from it. Get a grip.

I received my Shift today only to find out it has a crappy washed out screen. I've had some experiences with bad displays on the Mytouch 4G as indicated in this thread so I decided to visit a few Sprint stores and kiosks to check out their displays. They all exhibited washed out screens when viewed from an angle. All the reps I talked to are unaware of a display issue or didn't even notice problem until I pointed it out.
I also noticed that all the EVOs I looked at had a similar problem. I decided to check out a Verizon kiosk and looked at the Droid Incredible, Droid 2, and Droid X - which I believe are all LCD panels - and they all had good to great viewing angles.
I'm wondering if it is an issue similar to the MT4G where HTC was using 2 different panel types. If this is the intended quality of the screen I'm pretty disappointed. Fortunately this phone isn't for me and my girlfriend doesn't mind it. As bad as Samsung is I enjoy the SAMOLED screen on my Vibrant. I think I will pass up on the EVO and the Shift and wait to see what Sprint debuts in the next few months.
I think you have a bit of an unreasonable expectation there. Its a phone. You're supposed to look directly a it.
funny my screen is vibrant and crystal clear. return the thing if it isnt right and quit yer *****ing
Damn what's up with all the hostility?
Can you post some pictures similar to the one in the MT4G thread for comparison? A return is definitely warranted if the screen quality is abnormal.

Well part of the hostility is that a lot of posts are started here basically just to ***** about something and what not. And people get tired of it.
Also something like this is very subjective because a lot of people wouldn't expect a device like this to be viewable from 120 degrees, because why would you want to view it like that.
If you don't like the display then thats fine, just don't buy the phone and then start to ***** about it.
Personally, I haven't noticed any viewing angle problems, but I'm usually viewing it from the intended viewing angle. (or pretty close).
I do notice some washing out at 120 degree or greater, but I can barely read whats on the screen, so it really doesn't matter.
Perhaps the Epic 4g is the phone for you if you just want to be able to view your phone while laying in bed next to it... (i kid i kid) but seriously perhaps the Epic (Galaxy S line) is the way for you to go.

*looks around to see who cares* I don't understand the point of this thread. You're complaining about a imaginary problem on a phone you're not even going to use, yet your girlfriend doesn't mind this supposed issue? Most people view the display right smack dab in front of them. Its not a tv, you're not going to be ten feet away from the device trying to use it are you?

I don't notice any unreasonable amount of washing out (or any at all really) at ANY angle. I imagine if you're standing in sunlight it will, but inside my work, I can pretty much view it at angles up to 180 degrees. Can I read the icons? Of course not, but the screen isn't "washed out" at that angle either.

well many of us read the posts because we genuinely want to help somebody if theyre having a legit problem so "dont like it dont read it" doesnt exactly work in a forum like this....i agree the hostility should def come down a level but I also agree this is basically a non-issue, at least for 95% of people out there who dont need to look at their phone from any sort of angle....but to be fair to the 5% left it is a legit concern so def no need for any hostility at all really.....

Can you post a picture similar to this (including the HTC clock widget)? I'd like to compare to see if my phone is in fact defective.
I can't post a picture, but my unit looks just like the picture you've posted.
I agree that viewing angles aren't that big a deal on a cell phone. The device is really meant to be looked at directly and from a close range. Hell, this could even be a privacy feature! With this kind of screen, the guy next to you on the bus can't read your emails!
BS aside, I think this is a non-issue for the vast majority of people. If it's a big deal to you, return it. Get a Sammy phone. It's your money. You should get what makes you happy.

so the "washing out" you're talking about is mainly on white areas on the screen? Mine does that at angles over about 75 degrees, but that's to be expected with most (if not all) LCD panels so it's certainly not unreasonable or even noticeable to me.
Why are you trying to view it at that kind of an angle anyway?
I will mention that I can still read what's on your screen at that angle, even if the colors aren't accurate to what they are viewing straight. Heck, I can read text messages on my phone at nearly 90 degrees. They're obviously off color, but the text shows up just fine.

It doesn't only affect the white areas on the screen, i.e. the numbers in the clock are supposed to be black. Check out the Mytouch 4G thread I linked in my original post, it shows side-by-side comparisons of 2 different panel types on the MT4G - one exhibiting this washed out effect. It's been speculated by developers whom sifted through source code that the "bad" panel is a Sharp panel and the "good" panel is Sony. I'm not savvy on LCD panels so I don't know if this is an inherit trait of LCD technology. I do know that I've seen devices such as the Droid Incredible (LCD version), MT4G with a good panel, and others that do not have this problem. The high quality IPS panels on the iPhones don't exhibit this either.
It's not that I use the phone at these angles. This is just the best way to show the washing out effects.
compared to my htc aria my shift's screen is washed out, the darks arent as dark, the colors aren't as vibrant.
I have friends with regular EVOs (launch day evo's not current) and the screen on those screens are horribly washed out. The evos at the sprint store are much better..
I don't think the shift's screen is at all bad, but there is room for improvement.
Think the mods need to change the name of this thread to

I just found this article written by someone who knows his stuff.
http://gizmodo.com/5824807/the-best-tablet-displays-ipad-2-just-got-dethroned
I disagree with him though as I believe the transformer has a better and brighter screen than the Ipad 2.
I have both side by side and the iPad2 is clearly brighter at max, dimmer at min, and less reflective...
Any one else notice that this page has a caption next to the results: "Click to embiggen chart" ?
How can I take an article seriously if they use words that were made up on an episode of The Simpsons. I guess they would argue that their usage was perfectly cromulent.

Right, I almost never use max brightness.
Also Transformer has 1.3 times more the number of iPad 2 pixels.
This guy knows his stuff, so I'd not be inclined to argue with him. However, I'll say this: the screen on my TF is outstanding, regardless of whether or not some other screen is better. It's like cars: I love my Infiniti G37, even though there are demonstrably better-performing cars available. And indeed, one of the things that I love about the G37 is that I paid $15K less for it than the equivalent BMW, and have 95% of the performance. That's an equation that I can live with quite happily...

ive seen other review of the screen(cant remember where) by a guy who knows alot about photography, he did all this measurement on the color and white balance on the k scale, and has said if your into professional photo applications the transformers screen is the best as it produces very accurate colors, also samsung had put a screen driver ontop of the tegra 2 one to over saturate colors to make the screen appear more vibrant but if your looking for image accuracy its a bad screen for that

I have done measurement of the transformer and iPad and find that both units have some inaccuracy, but are pretty close to the actual values when displaying a sample color panel. I would give a nod to Transformer for warmer (red and orange) colors and the iPad to colder (blues) colors. Both are miles more accurate than the Samsung which is dramatically over saturated.
My iPad's screen is too warm, and my TF's screen is too cool.
It's a bit frustrating.

Yeah, the color accuracy is great on this screen. It almost makes it painful to go back to my laptop.

The Ipad is known for having light lead issues as well; it seems to be a "feature" of IPS panels. That does nothing, however, to detract from the fundamental quality of the screen when any light leakage isn't apparent (as in 100% of my own use, since I might have leakage but haven't even noticed it).

Tablets really need to have color profiles and brightness and contrast like you do on a Mac or PC. Then you could use a hardware calibrator to create a customize profile for the specific of your own display. I do this on all my laptops and desktop monitors and the results are very nice. The only downside is the calibrator hardware and software cost $250+.
i just had my screen replaced under warranty by asus for a white spot (backlight leak).
unless i'm imagining it, the new screen seems to be warmer and not quite so bright as the one it replaced
but it also has zero light bleed at the edges where the old one had quite a bit.
perhaps they're now using a different panel than when i first bought my b60 tf101 a year ago.
has anybody else noticed any variation in screen brightness/ colour between units?

I have TF101 (mid level bleed issues, I can live with them given I rarely run full brightness, never need to), iPad 1,2,3, A500, Nook Color, and a few others. IMO, ALL of the IPS displays are great, and more than safisfying. I don't compare them because I don't see the point, they are all way more than "good enough" for my and my family's casual use. If you are using these for photography or similar "on the road" and color accuracy is a concern, then you should probably get a Macbook or even better the new asus zen gen2 (which beats even the MAC displays for accuracy, check out Anand's review on the new Zen Ultrabook, drool ). My main point is, as long as your display makes you happy, who cares if there is another one out there that is better . If you are researching for a purchase on the other hand, be realistic in what your uses are going to be and read reviews that cover those uses along with reliability and customer support quality, see if you can borrow one or check one out somewhere, and let your budget and your eyes be your guide, and you will be happy with what you get.
Looking to get a used Transformer soon. I remember reading about light leak being a problem when they first came out, but anything else I should be aware of?
Dock drain issues and dock noise issues, those and light bleed have gotten me red in the face..other than that, just wait- I should be able to tell you of a few more defects when I return what I have that is defective now for RMA..
All in all though, I am satisfied with what I have (heavily modded though)
If light bleeds bother you so much, you should get an ipad 2. Even though every freakin' ipad 2 has light bleeds like mofos, at least it's an ipad 2 and all imperfections of the ipad 2 can be forgiven. It doesn't apply to any other ips display devices, though.
You know what. I've been lurking apple forums for the last 2 years, and I can't recall so many people complaining about light bleeds like android forums. I've owned an ipad 2 before. That thing had light bleed that was 10 times worse than my current TF. I know 6 people who each got an ipad 2, and every one of them has light bleed. And yet I've never heard a single one of them complain about light bleed. The only people who cry bloody murder about light bleeds are android users.
So, please do us all a favor and get an ipad 2. I am sick and tired of this whine from people. If light bleeds bother you that much, either get an ipad 2 (which light bleeds like mofos) or go back to analogue devices.
Jesus christ...
well.....
..dock drain certainly. I had a B40 unit. RMA turn around in 2 days, so no not an issue (obviously would have been better without). It depends how "fussy" you are. I don't mean that in a negative way, some things just "niggle" people in different ways. I have some light bleed but didn't notice it until I went looking for it. Of course I have no basis of comparison on what is "bad", just what I have. The only (really minor) issue is that my unit has a "creak" on the right hand side, hard to explain but like treading on a squeaky floorboard. Anyone that has found a squeaky floorboard always rocks on it to make the sound again and so (despite my wife looking at me like I am mental when I just asked her if she does that).... I keep noticing it. Bit like looking for the light bleed when I boot it up (no I don't have OCD).
Nope. I just bought my transformer not even a week ago and everything was A-OK on it right out of the box. No light bleed or dock issues.
The dock drain problem is not related to the tablet itself is it?

Not every time. But I do stick my nose in when I see whiners. Look, it's obvious by now that EVERY IPS display device out there has some kind of light bleed. My TF has some light bleeds as well. Ipad2 users seem to be perfectly fine with this. Back when android tablets were still using the traditional lcd display, android users were whining left and right, up and down, and probably had to go through intensive therapy about the fact that android tablets were on regular lcd while the ipad2 were on ips display. Now that we have an android tablet with an ips display, android users are now crying bloody murder over light bleeds.
So, let me put it another way. Since some android users out there can't be happy with anything, why not just buy an ipad2 and stop whining?
I honestly don't mind if people ***** about REAL problems, like gps not working right or the left side creaking. Or how about dead pixels and non-responsive touchscreen. Polaris office corrupting your precious files. You know, real honest to god problems. If you need intensive therapy over screen bleeds, just get a tablet with regular lcd. Oh wait, you need intensive therapy for that also.
Again, I've been lurking on apple forums for years. I can't recall so many apple users whining about screen bleeds. Trust me, every ipad2 out there has screen bleeds. I've seen a couple that lights up like a christmas tree around the edges. And yet, they don't seem to care. But android users...

I don't know if anyone knows for sure. We have conflicting reports all the time. Some people reported the dock battery draining problem all the way from May. Some reported the update before the latest one fixed it. Some people reported the latest update brought it back. Some people like myself never observed it in the first place.
Can't really pin down the problem if we consistently get conflicting reports.
Added by edit.
I just opened up the 2 TF's that I have and did some lite experiments. The left side creaking problem is due to the way the bezel is designed and put together. It's due to one of the lock pieces not in alignment with each other. What I did to stop my Tf left side from creaking was align the bezel the right way before I clicked it back into place. Worked for both my TF's.

REALLY? Every one does? Because after I returned my first one, my second one DOESN'T. So.......yeah. Wrong again.
People, light bleed is a manufacturing defect from not attaching the plate onto the back of the screen properly/securely. It is not something you have to get used to, it is a defect and the company should have higher standards.
Don't let fools tell you that EVERY Transformer has light bleed problems. My screen looks OFF when it is on black pixels. There is no bleed. No one is whining except you btw.
Oh, and let's make sure we are all just as accepting of manufacturing defects as those tools who buy apple products like it's a religion. They don't complain, then neither should we.....BS man, get over yourself. Sounds like sour grapes to me because your light bleeds, you want to convince yourself that it's no big deal by comparing it to the ipad..it's not an ipad. And your transformer is defective. But, keep your defective transformer if you are happy with it, no one is asking you to give it up. But if people aren't as complacent with defective hardware as you, how about keep your negative comments to yourself? Not everyone has low standards and wads of cash to throw away at defective hardware and go "eh, whatever". I pay $500, I'm getting one that isn't defective. PERIOD.

Kudos to you for finding one without a light bleed problem.
Like I said, between ipad users and TF users in my life, I have access to 12 ips devices. All of them have light bleeds. Even people at work with ipads all have light bleeds to some degree. Some are not very noticeable. Some are.
I'm not saying we should all be happy with light bleeds. But for now, technology doesn't seem to be to a point where manufacturing can produce anywhere near 100% non-light bleeded ips devices.
Keep exchanging your TF in the hopes of finding one without light bleeds if you want. I'm just saying the chances of you finding a perfect one without light bleeds are slim at best.
And as always, the one person who got the perfect device asks people why they don't have a perfect device also.
Perhaps he's an Apple associate who is pretending to be an asshole android fanboy to push people back to Apple?

Now,I agree that that's too much light bleed. Go ahead and do a survey. See how many people report of having light bleed to some degree. Like I said, I've gotten my hands on a dozen ips display devices. All have some kind of light bleed. None as bad as yours.
Kudos to you for finding one with none.
To the op, if you want to find an ips screen with no light bleed, I wish you the best of luck.
That's too much light bleed?
I was sure I was just, what was it now? Whining?
My first two were B4O and B5O respectively, both had heavy light bleed similar to the picture posted on this thread. The third and current one is a B6O straight from Asus HQ and it has NO light bleed on the entire perimeter of the screen save for a TINY non severe area on the bottom that's roughly the width of a U.S. dime and extends about 1mm from the screen border towards the center of the screen. In other words, it's non-existent. You can't notice it unless you stare at it for a while.

Haha, trust me, I've seen people whine with a lot less light bleeds. I've also dealt with someone that whined he could see the capacitive sensor grid under certain lighting at a certain angle.

If light bleeds bother you that much, either get an ipad 2 (which light bleeds like mofos) or go back to analogue devices.

here is a picture of my screen. ISO 100, 200, 400 in succession. obviously the lighter photos are higher ISO
I don't mean to stir the pot, but are you testing it at 100% brightness? The reason I ask is because I don't see any backlight of the LCD in your video. It appears that you're using a really low brightness level. I can definitely see a rectangular backlight when I record at 100% brightness. Even at 0 brightness I can see a faint rectangular panel. It definitely doesn't look like it's off. However, when I try to record it at 0 brightness, I can't see it on the video.

Not massive bleeding but it was still there so I managed to get it swapped out today thankfully! I didn't want it getting worse. Seems this was a big problem on the Prime so why havent Asus fixed it for the Pad?
I've got a little from one edge, but not ebough to bother me. Does this get worse? I assumed it would stay as is.

I thought over time it would get worse? My replacement model has no signs of this bleeding.
Can you even see that much light bleed during normal use? I feel like as long as I'm not looking at a black screen with nothing else close to the edge I would never notice this.

True but it was bugging me, I started to notice it on the Gallery (Black Screen) then on Boot Up.
Seems I spoke too soon as the sun is setting here and I just started to notice it again...rubbish. Is it a actually fault or just something I have to ignore and live with?
Not sure how your new one looks, but mine has slightly less bleed than your pics show. I don't notice it at all except during the boot screen, so I'm living with mine. but to each his own, I guess you'll have to decide whether or not its acceptable.
Judging by other people's reports, light bleed is normal with these tablets. The key is to find one with as little light bleed as possible. The first one I got had massive light bleed around all sides, especially in the lower right corner. I exchanged it because of a dead pixel, and my new one has light bleed, too, but it's only across the bottom edge and very minimal. I don't even notice it in the status bar (black and always at the bottom edge of the screen) at all during use, only during boot-up. So, I'm satisfied with my replacement's slight amount of light bleed based on the light bleed from the first one and the reports on this forum.
light bleed
Hi All,
I think it's normal that the Asus TF300 has light bleed,I got my new Asus yesterday and I have same issue.
Mine has a minimal amount of bleed at the bottom.
Only notice it during boot tho.
Not worth swapping and getting something worse.
Mine also has light bleed, but its not as bad as the first one i had.
I don't think i notice bleed so I'm fortunate.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using XDA
Hey guys, I just started to notice this on my new 32. I never noticed it on the 16 I had before this (but I wasnt looking for it either). After a lot of research it seems this is normal for IPS screens. Ive seen some pretty pad Ipads on you tube. Anyway Ive attached a picture of mine at its worse. This was while viewing a solid black jpg. Does this look like a bad case, or minimal? Ive already exchanged/ returned several tablets for different reasons so Im hoping not to need to again.
It's kind of hard to tell with the jpeg quality. It makes everything look kind of pixelated.
I'd say, though, that the top two corners look pretty bad. The bottom right corner isn't looking so hot either, but it's better than the same corner on my first TF300.
As for whether you should return it, does it bother you a lot? How often do you look at your screen when it's pure black like that? If you think you can ignore it, save yourself the hassle of another return. If it's going to ruin your tablet experience, return it, and try again.
I received mine two days ago, I immediately did the update and I never had any flickering issues.

Jeepers!
That is not light bleeding, but banana bleeding. There are giant yellow swaths on the display
Seriously though, that is part of the issue with this type of tech if wanting to price for mass consumer range (for the panel volumes purchased). It gets expensive with the needed design / production specs and the substrate layer to avoid the light bleed. The tolerance in production also means some will bleed more than others. The iPad 1 had issues, but Apple were able to get better quality panels, due to economy of scale to lower cost for the better quality panels.
The Toshiba Excite appears to have even more bleed than the average 300, but the A510 has zero light bleed (reviews support this observation). Of course, most folks buying the 300 are wanting to use the keyboard, so the A510 is not an option.
Light Bleed Fix (if your brave)
Ok, Im in the middle of a fix that I have found for the light bleed. Its actually not all that hard. Im going to write up a full how to once Im done, but just wanted to let anyone know thats interested that it is absolutely fixable.
Ive been through so many tabs I lost count. Im on my 4th TF300, so needless to say frustrated. All returned or exchanged for one reason or another. This one works great, except for the light bleed. So I got brave and decided to tear into it to see what I could do. Ill get into all the details later, but Ive attached before and after pics of one of the worst light bleed spots. The first pic just shows my whole screen in all its light bleeding glory. The second shows it after I have taken it apart, and shows one of the worst spots. Which in the lower right at notification area. The 3rd shows what it looks like after I fixed it. I have about 3 more areas Im going to work on, but wanted to let you guys see its fixable. The best thing about it is that if your careful you can do this without voiding any warranty. Theres one one sticker inside that is the kind that voids warranty if broken and its not hard to avoid.
Anyway see attached pics for my progress so far.

Let me guess you followed the thread in Prime's forum about fixing it yourself. Did you loosen the screws in the lcd? I been wanting to do this, but since I might not have the right tools I don't want to screw up the warranty. I'm going to check if the service center near my house can do this for me so it stays in warranty. I pretty much have the same light bleeds as you.

The idea came from a YouTube video that I watched, For transformer prime but the way he took apart was totally different. I'll keep trying and if I succeed I'll post a tutorial unfortunately I don't have a way of video taping but I can write a walk-through.
Been a lurker here in xda-devs even before i got my s2 last july 2011, Am about to have my actual s3 in about 12 hours from now. It seems the Ink mark/blotches issue is getting out of hand and some individuals are even opting to have their unit replaced/serviced because of the said issue. So its about time I step up and DID my own investigation about this issue:
Test Setup:
Canon 60D DSLR
Canon 50mm 1.4 USM lens
Galaxy S2 (SAMOLED)
Iphone 4 (LED - Just for comparison)
so lets get to the point:

Flash Used: No
so the dreaded ink marks/blotches on screen scandal? i dont think so
because in Normal Usage, you cant even see those blotches
comparison with Iphone 4:
additional note: I used my S2 in posting this because my s3 will be arriving in a few hours. reserving the first three reply threads just to confirm ( repeat this test with the s3)
Bottom Line: Stop complaining about it, you wont see it in normal useage. thats all.
Important discovery: using this long shutter method also uncovers screen burn of my 11 month old S2 (upper part of the screen where time is) a good discovery heheh
Test Setup:
at last someone who knows what he's saying and a proof at it...i remembered a dude here who loved to whine too much about screen displays, but when asked about proofs and stuff, kaput...brave one mate!
I had a screen burn in and an ink mark on my Samsung Vibrant SGH-T959 and never really paid attention to it. I'm a phone owl who uses phone at night all the time. This problem doesn't really bother me. Yes, it's there but who cares

Nice effect with the long exposure. Try it on black with the iphone?
I know it is called screen BURN IN, but the noticible view of the notification bar isn't necesarry a burn in. Plasma TVs have this as well, it isn't a burn in but rather a ghostly remain of the previous image that is slowly fading.
Try opening a black picture with white lines for 20min, then take the picture again, it might show the black lines instead of the notification bar.
You might, MAYBE, brake the myth about amoled burn in. How cool would that be

the screen burn-in in the S2 is the actual corpse of the dead blue subpixels on the samoled
BRAVO!!!!
Finally someone open a thread to shut up the whiners and not to join them.
My congrats to you sir.
If people find it irritating they will complain.
I have a couple of ink marks on my unit, I could put my dslr to use and grab a shot but the truth is I cant be bothered to do so.
My point is the problem does exist on the S3, however as stated above you dont see it during normal use so I'ma keep my unit.
I've never seen those on my gs2. I have a 4.5 inch one with the dreaded streaks, and it shows up on EVERYTHING, even on max brightness. That is a bigger concern. Hope the pentile gs3 doesnt have it. They are like lines on an old vhs tape, you know when you have to change the tracking to try and remove.
There's no use trying to be judgmental about people's complaints. Half the posts in threads with the smallest issue (camera jingly noise, warm phone, not perfect white) will tell the OP to return the phone. I just assume everyone on here is an asshole, including you!
cripes i love the attitude of people here...we have screen issues in the note threads and most of them uberly whine and complain and talk crap...but the ones who stuck it out are now reaping the benefits...honestly peeps...the problem is or may be there but it can be mended...lets wait for the actual s3 tests
The thing is that this problem exists since SGS1 days. Passing through the note, gnexus, etc. So you know that this problem is gonna be on the SGS3.
I have the ink marks too, i have a horizontal line about 0.5 CM long on the upperside of the screen.
In normal situation you can't see it, to see it you have to be looking right to that line in darkness watching a black image. I do that about 5 minutes before i go to sleep.
This is a non-issue for me. The problem is to the people who can see it under any light situation, i can understand them.
But if you are taking a picture in a complete dark ennviroment to find spots. Well, it's better to leave it there.....
@OP Im pleased for you that all of your marks are small and unnoticeable. Unfortunately, that is not the case for me... I have a large one right in the centre of the screen, visible without a DSLR.
And for the record. I can't see my marks either on high brightness like you used in your test. Try watching a film at night with the lights out, something with dark scenes like Tron. That's the real would situation i'm unhappy about.
I don't see why this issue shouldn't be discussed by people affected by it. Just my two cents.
Some people can and do see the spots and marks in normal use, and the fact is the quality of AMOLED screens and their durability varies a lot. This is what people are concerned about, don't generalize and say there's no problem.
Wondered how long it'd take for the complaints police to arrive here.
Agreed. Makes me laugh how the OP has basically set up a thread to whine about other people complaining. Even though some of then have legitimate reasons.
I think he was just bored because his S3 hadn't arrived yet. Ended up performing inaccurate tests on his S2 to pass the time.

i guess the point of the OP is valid somewhat for the reasons that some people here complain too much about screen problems and do nothing about it even if some able members suggest solutions...as said if you have a warranty and have noticeable screen issues then by God use that consumer right...and i hope you provide us with an accurate screen test of phones so as we may know what should be done...
