I've been in close contact via email with Acer and reporting all the problems and so on.
And now the latest email I got was saying they are not sure about the exact date of release but that it will definately be in the end of july. But they did not state what issues they would fix.
Just sharing some info.
Cheers!
Thanks for sharing.
the information my contact gave me was very blurry...
something about 3.2 and A100.
also about the Iconia Smart
Thanks to the Senior Members
Thanks to the senior members from a newbie for staying on top of 3.1 release of honeycomb for the A500. It's very fustrating not knowing when the release is coming out and not getting squat from Acer for information. I've only had my Iconia for 6 weeks and I'm holding out paying any money for Apps or rooting my tablet until the new version comes out but my patience is wearing out. Do you think that's the right strategy.
Why hold out on buying apps? Anything you buy now isn't going to suddenly stop working with 3.1...
Same goes for rooting, really. It's an easy process to undo, and 3.1 is already out and rooted, there's just an unconfirmed rumour that it has been temporarily withdrawn.
And besides that, even after a hard reset you can still download your previously bought apps without having to pay for them again. Google knows how to remember what you bought
And you need to root to create a system backup. My device for example updated to a "dud" - a firmware that was withdrawn and couldn't update further. Had to flash the right update.zip upgrade to be able to get 3.1.

I think it's the same case for me. I had a nandroid backup of my official firmware before going custom. Sad to say, it seems that the OTA update I had was a dud like yours. It updated to Acer_A500_1.126.03_COM_GEN1 and I was unable to get any updates.

Really.. uncomfirmed rumour that t has been temporarily withdrawn? Is that why I can no longer get it? I read your posts and so often they flame.. Just like the rumour of global warming right?

Huh? What the f--- are you talking about? I'm not flaming anyone, just telling the OP there's zero need to wait regarding buying apps from the market.
Get back under your bridge, troll.
Im thinking Acer is trying to conserve resources. Instead of working thruball the bugs are waiting for Google's release.then making there adjustments. And pushing big releases instead of a bunch of minor releases.and I think it might be best for everyone in the long run.less fragmentation with all the small updates
Again my openion only
So, basically, August.
I predict I'll get my update the 2nd week of - or later.
My Iconia updated without issue on the 9th. And aside from doing the double restet button to fix wifi, I've been enjoying all the new features and speed (the screen scrolling/swiping finally matches the rest and pricier other HC tablets).
As for the end of July date you posted, I think it might be HC 3.2 after reading this-

awesome.. I did not know that. Since we're on the subject of buying Apps I read on another post that some clown took apps and added some malware and a root kit to hack your system. I guess he got caught when someone noticed the new version wasn't being sold by the original developer or something like that. Anyway since I'm not that saavy yet is there a way to make sure I'm buying something that's clean.

Alrighty then... I guess I'll go back to the threads on rooting and give it a shot. Since I've got some droid heads here I can ask another dumb question. Once I root this puppy is there a way to get a terminal window to run some linux-like commands or am I out to lunch on that

Terminal emulator, I think that's it...In the market.
I've a question, do providers have to get extra bandwidth to push out updates, and could that be a factor why some of them might do it in batches so they don't have to pay up for extra bandwidth? Acer reps saying that the update may arrive in a week or two doesn't make sense when some have received their updates already even two successive builds in some cases :/

I'm posting this up here so everyone can see it and doesn't have to go through threads to see it.
If this 2.1 update is legit, there is a way to grab the OTA update. \
Essentially what you will need to do is decline the update when your phone asks you about it.
Run this command on your computer with the SDK installed and adb set up:
Code:
adb -d logcat UpdateReceiver:I CheckinService:I *:S
Post the link that is returned.
As a note - I'll throw this in my signature for now as well.
2.1 will be difficult if not impossible to downgrade from. If you upgrade, and we find root on 1.5, you are out of luck if the exploit has been patched. I think we *should* be able to downgrade the phone, but I also think that it *will* require some technical skills. If you lack these skills, realize you *WILL NOT* get root if we find an exploit that has been patched in 2.1 but not in 1.5.
Simply put: I have every intention of upgrading my phone when this update hits it. But, I also have every intention of finding a way to downgrade it afterwards and keep working on root with 1.5. Then, I'll post a walkthrough for downgrading. More than likely it will involve a goldcard (which sucks to make kind of).
Enjoy, and thanks! Post that link if you get an OTA alert!
so this will give us the 2.1 update? question is, will it have the upgraded sense ui? i read on another post not from this site that eris users who upgraded to 2.1 through a mishap with verizon had their phone completely useless.
if your phone has the option to update, that command will print out a URL of where the OTA update file is located. It should be something like clients.android.google.com/updates/desirec/desirec-ota.(6random numbers).(8 random hex).zip. That will allow the rest of us to get the update before its pushed to our devices.
I have an extra eris, so messege me if you need to try something out. I have Ubuntu installed already.
I'll get that thing up here IF it actually pops. Has VZW been able to clear up if 2.1 is indeed a myth or truth?
My phone just randomly reset. I'm calling VZW as we speak. I'll see what is going on while I'm on the phone with them.
My phone just randomly reset as well. But no update
Verizon just let me know that the current version installed on our phones is 1.17.605.1. I'm being transferred to tech support to fix a network connnection problem I've been having, but after that I'll make sure to ask about the 2.1 update.
Thanks!

Yeah i was having network issues yesturday actually. i did a hard reset twice. the internet was working but i couldnt make phone calls or send texts. called verizon as soon as i got home, and they told me there was an issue with the services. had me do some weird stuff but i didnt write it down =/
2.1 from Verizon:
So, from the mouth of the dragon, verizon told me that "I know the update is coming *soon*, but no official date has been set yet". The Tech Support rep told me that most of the posts I've probably seen online have been fake (sorry, but I actually believe most of them, I want the leaked copy if there is one, or the OTA if it does come out). So, simply put, I'd assume you WILL NOT be getting an OTA in the next few days. But, soon for verizon is better than "soon" for Blizzard (Blizzard's definition of soon is sometime between now and the end of the universe, preferably closer to the now side).
Thanks!

My prediction is you guys will get 2.1 on January 1st, 2012... Which sucks, because that's precisely the time when the world is going to end. So you guys are kind of SOL if i'm right.

PS... Framework43 McDonalds might sue you over your sig. If they do, just say you got fat by eating too many happy meals, and you should be okay.

December 20th 2012. Just to point out (12-20-20-12)
I got to see an Eris running 2.1 with Sense and some of its neat new enhancements. I also got to see why it's not released yet. Some of the defects aren't too nice. If you manage to get a copy of the update, I would not use it on a device you use actively.
Wait until release. There's a reason it's not being pushed, yet. I can get it now, if I wanted, but it even scares me The person who showed me his device is a developer.
I have no release date. As far as I know, there isn't one, yet. Just "any day now."

Heya there! Seems like I'm one of the unlucky ones who got a 2.2 Transformer. Is there a safe way to install one of the 3.1 roms on those? I don't just want to go ahead and update the thing with like, Primordial, because it might break it if the partitioning is different.
I would keep it as is or sell it on eBay. That is a RARE tablet!
It might be rare, but it's pretty unuseable as a tablet. That's not really helping me. And I don't think It'd sell any better than normal ones on ebay, it's after all well known what's inside the system by this point.
Apologies. My answer was not helpful to you.
I do not think that you will have an issue just taking the leaked HC 3.1 and just installing it over your 2.2 install. Be sure to do a Nandroid backup first.......and if you are able to....post it here for the devs to play with.
Can anyone else confirm that this will not harm his tablet?

yes, it is possible. not sure if it is public yet.
Wait, some of these TFs come with Froyo? Lol, seriously? I hope I misunderstood that.
Some (I think 5 are known by now) did indeed. It's an early version of Froyo that has a lot of apps for testing the different hardware of the transformer preinstalled, but is otherwise... Well, Froyo, not Honeycomb ^^
Also having problems installing it here... I figure I need to somehow replace the recovery, so I can use cwm, but I can't figure out how to do it. This Transformer also comes with a Fastboot option, so maybe there's more to it.
I can assure you that you would probably pull more money for it on ebay than you would for a regular transformer. Not to mention, several people who purchased tablets that had 2.2 on it were contacted by ASUS and we given the option to replace it and I think they got some kind of bonus for turning it in. I can certainly imagine they don't want their in house programs leaking out to other companies or the public.
Return it to the retailer or call Asus.
You're not the first that posted about getting 2.2.
It's useless, don't bother selling it on eBay, they charge 9% for things over $400+ and PayPal charges 3%, It's really not worth selling it.
I can't believe this crap! This is my tablet, not Asus' tablet or Google's tablet. As such if I don't want to update then so be it.
Sorry, I'm just a little pissed right now. How to I prevent a firmware update? I'm rooted and don't want to update.

Won't it "count down" and do an install automatically? If that is the case why is there a postpone button that continues to count down (was at 3, now at 2)? How do I get rid of the notification that I have a firmware downloaded and ready to install?
"This is my tablet, not Asus' tablet or Google's tablet"
If you failed to read up, or educate yourself on the behaviour of the tablet and how it would be updated before you bought it is your own fault, not Google or ASUS's fault.
You buy a car and then say I want to put Diesel in it because its MY car, even though its design was to take petrol ?
No, you buy a Diesel car to start with.
If you don't like the way something is designed, DON'T BUY IT !
You should have learned about your device before you bought it
More to the point, you managed to somehow fumble your way round rooting it, but amazingly failed to read the bit that says "YOU CAN NOT UPGRADE WITH OTA UPDATES AFTER ROOTING YOUR TABLET"
Go ahead, try it
you will be presented with that screen again, it won't happen automatically. just keep postponing it.

I have not failed to read or update myself on the behavior of my tablet before I purchased it. If this problem was addressed then perhaps I overlooked it.
I also didn't "fumble my way around rooting" my device. I rooted it with precison and accuracy. I have no desire to update with FOTA updates (hence the reckless and carefree rooting that I executed on my decice). I'd prefer to prevent them from downloading and notifying me in the first place that they have been downloaded.
I would also think somebody with a "senior member" status would have a little tact when preparing a response.

Opening a thread with "I can't believe this crap" is the best way to get responses you do not appreciate.
The tablet is doing what it was designed to do, you forced it to perform actions it was programmed not to do, you failed to investigate fully two separate things you state in your OP and shout your mouth off like a spoiled child.
What response would you like people to prepare for you ?
"Yea stupid ASUS, Stupid Google, they should have known "johndball" was going to root his device and not want official updates, they should have planned for that during manufacturing especially for you"

Any idea what roach did in his ROM that disabled the notifications? Is it something simple as renaming a certificates file or something difficult?
i think you just have to remove DMclient to stop the notifications/updates. It's i the threads, so it should turn up with search.
If you have Titanium Backup, you can freeze DMClient to disable the firmware update.

The thread shows up under "FOTA" and not "firmware update" which is why I couldn't find it earlier.

Actually, thats not true. I was running on stock 8.6.5.6 rooted, and was able to update sucessfully. I verified the update in the settings. I have also verified with root checker that i am no longer rooted, as i was before the update. I bought my transformer only a few weeks ago. It came with 3.1 and i updated to 3.2 before rooting. Wonder if that or the rooting method has something to do with why i was able to update while rooted.
Prime does have the update disabled. If you are not on.a ROM with disabled update, you can always freeze with Titanium...

Don't get too excited. You can't root 3.2 yet.
I got the update this morning in Vancouver. If there is no root by the end of the weekend (I don't have my hopes up), then I'm downgrading. I need ad-hoc to work.
Got it last night in Nova Scotia.

Unfortunately it's too late for that for many of us...
When I upgraded I realized root may not work, but I always figured if it didn't I'd simply downgrade again and be ok... I never imagined that the downgrade wouldn't be possible either.
As my girlfriend said when I described it to her "who do they think they are? don't they know that you already paid for the device, it's not theirs anymore, why do they think they can still tell you what you can and can't do on it?" (Unfortunately I am not currently aware of any large technology company who believes that they actually sell you a device, they all think you merely rent it from them)

I'm in the same boat. Acer has always been pretty flexible, so I just assumed I'd be able to downgrade. Now I'm stuck.
This could likely be my last Acer product. Not that that carries any weight, considering how many returns they had on the initial run of the A500, which didn't appear to bother them that much. (Have you tried the new A500's, or the refurbs? The GPS actually works!)
I understand that they don't want us mucking around with these types of things, in order to keep themselves from getting flooded with warranty and service calls from the idiots who bricked their tablet, but they often adopt the wrong attitude. It's like some irrational need to police what people do with a product, after they bought and paid for it. I'm not sure why consumer electronics differ from any other purchased property (cars, houses, appliances, etc). I wish they would understand that they do not still own my tablet.
Then again, we did choose to install the update. It wasn't exactly forced on us. So maybe we're the idiots.
-PW
Every android device I had was not able to be downgraded. Not just acer. Ask the people who upgraded their EVO 4G to gingerbread. If your expecting to root you should always way until their is a rooted ROM available and never accept ota

I am happy that the new update seems to have made things smoother, but I am still getting the odd crash from apps like Dolpin Browser which is highly annoying, especially when I am in the middle of typing somthing big and then it FC's on me and I lose everything.
was in update loop
Dunno if this happened to anyone else. The tablet kept downloading the update and failing. I downloaded 3.2 update at least 8 times. The solution was to reset the tablet and then apply the update.
I've read its likely due to incompatible apps.
I'm happily on 3.2 now.
Does someone have the link to Acer for this update? If so please post the link.

No link, however a couple of us captured the update as it came in to our tablets, and have you can find the files here
A couple things.
I am still on 3.1 but this is because i patched for Netflix.
Now the device thinks it's a Xoom on 3.2 (which it is not, as we all know).
First question is has anyone tried Netflix with the update?
I'll search for it but does anyone have the original file that the netflix patch replaced?
I can't remember what it's called so it's difficult to search for it
Hmmm sounds like ill stay on 3.1

That timeframe would put this new software update about a month after the 6.2 update released at the end of November.

Oh God lol, now I have to root again....

Well hopefully this time it will be at least a worthwhile update. instead of a no visible difference update like the last one or take away a feature like the one before that.

Let's hope the Development get a solid kernel and Rom by then...I don't want to be stock when they update the bootloader and lock it down after all the returned rooted and bricked fires due to people testing kernels that didn't know what they were doing and then returning them.....

Lets hope some concrete updates...... But wht about some hardware issues......

The OTA will be a non-issue as much as the 6.2 update was. Sure you might have to reroot but Big Deal! That took all of a 30 seconds to do again.
Stuff about Amazon changing to a locked bootloader ignores the fact that most people never root or modify their device. The ones that do are a very miniscule minority of the total users that have the unit. Besides, has any device manufacturer locked a bootloader for a device that was originally released as unlocked? I don't think so.
I bet a lot more units are returned due to some malfunction than due to some someone screwing up their unit trying to modify it.
My wife has her unit stock... no mods, no tweaks, just uses it the way it came. I have mine rooted, different launcher and tons of apps that I have loaded from Android Market or side loaded via other means. I think the device is great for the price.
People who use forums like this have a very skewed idea of how many people actually modify their devices... most never do, never know about it and don't even know forums like this.

Exactly ... That's a well explained post
Yeah, companies lock bootloaders for concrete reasons. They are not going to all of a sudden lock the device down a month after it was released just to mess with modders. Because that is literally the only thing it would do.
The Nook Tablet, for instance... I believe the reason the bootloader is locked is because they had to as part of an agreement with Netflix to provide higher quality streaming to the device. B&N decided that annoying the tiny minority of modders was worth it in exchange for high quality Netflix streaming - something that a much larger percentage of users can benefit from and of course an extra marketing bullet point for them to use.
I'm fine with them updating the device. Look at all the Android phones that don't get regular updates. All people do is whine about NOT getting updated! The KF is some great hardware for the price but it still has issues. Touchscreen responsiveness still needs to be improved, battery life REALLY needs to be improved, and they have to fix the sleep of death as well. I will GLADLY go through the hassle of re-rooting and re-installing the market if these things are fixed.
Of course I'd prefer to have a custom ROM so I can get updates without having to redo all that stuff, but it's only a matter of time.
please, dear god, let non-rooted users change the lockscreen wallpaper
Is there a way yet to block OTA updates (that is also easy to reverse)?
Don't want to be caught with my pants down by this update if it does more than anticipated ....

Also hoping for a clean re-root-only response to this update... I have it stowed away as a gift for my wife, and take it out at night to perform nerd-surgery. It would be great to not have issues right before holiday, as it's going to be enough fun explaining the different launchers, etc.

I have nothing to contribute to this, just lmfao at your analogy of what you do late at night. ;-)

Not the best solution, but it's easy: turn off wireless.
You don't need a widget for this, but it's nice. I recently installed a power control widget ( I used Widgetsoid ) to allow me to turn off wireless ( as well as adjust brightness, volume, toggle USB, and turn off GPS ).
Since I'm mostly content with my setup for now, I leave the wireless turned off to conserve battery and avoid the next update. I'd rather wait until I hear from the good folks here that the next update is OKAY before I turn on wireless and let it update. In the meantime, if I need wireless, I can check here just to be sure there is no update waiting to be pushed, flip on the wireless, do what I need, then turn it back off.
Like I said, it's not the best solution, but it works for me, and it's really simple.

Let me ask you something- same situation here.. My wife's just came in the mail today. I'd like to know more about device setup before said "nerd surgery" as I want to do a similar thing.. Did you login with your own amazon account or hers? If I login w/ hers I don't want her to get a "Congrats on your Kindle registration" type of email- as this is a surprise after all.. But- I'm also thinking that if I go ahead and login w/ mine- anything I do as far as loading apps, etc will be wiped out when she has to login w/ hers?
Sorry to be long winded- overall my main question is- Whats the best way to tinker/root/play with this thing w/o giving away any surprises or having to re-do work?
I'd leave it in the box. When my wife's came, she wanted it right away. It auto registered to MY account, not hers. Didn't add anything to it, it just happened.
I had to deregister it and then reregister it to her account. Doing so is like a default reset.
Also, it is going to auto update at least once as they come with 6.1 and 6.2 is the current. Might even be 6.3 or whatever the new OTA is by the time she opens it.
Do you remember if she got an email when you deregistered and assigned it to her account?
Dont recall. I don't read her email so I don't know and I did a quick check of my email and don't see anything either...
I definitely got an email when I registered mine.
