Hi,
I recently got myself a new Type N WiFi router. On my old B/G Wifi router my SGS connected with 54MBit/s as it is supposed to do.
I was expecting to see a connection speed of 300MBit/s now (I'm not talking about the effective transfer rate, just the connection speed) but instead my SGS connects with very variable speeds to the router but never exceeding 65MBit/s.
Is this normal or do I have to do some specific settings in the phone or in the router?
my notebook computer connected at 300Mb/s while my SGS is at 72Mbps. HD(720p) playback through network is smooth.
its normal, sgs has only one antenna, look it up, for 300 Mbit u need 3 antenna.

You are talking about the transfer rate, I asked instead about the connection speed. You might be able to see this logging into your router. Your slow transfer speed probably depends of the fact that you are connected with your PC through Wi-Fi too. Connect the PC by cable and your transfer speed will at least double.

my all-time maximum is 72Mbps
and its not even effective
when transferring files it uses about half of that speed
720p is indeed smooth

I have a wireless router(Asus WL-600G) in my room that support:
802.11g:6,9,12,18,24,36,48,54 Mbps
802.11b:1,2,5.5,11 Mbps
My PC connected to this router with wired lan and ofcource my HTC-HD connected to this router with wireless connection.
But in my phone's wireless LAN setting, in the box of Tx-Rate shows 54Mbps and in the box of Rx-Rate shows 1 Mbps(usually)(some times shows 54Mbps and then change to 1Mbps)
ofcource, I set power save mode to Best Performance.
When I use Resco File Explorer to transfer my files like .avi files, from my pc to my phone, my speed is up to 300KByte/s and it taking too long time, transfering my files.
And I can't watch my movies directly from my local Lan and continiusly my movie player(Core Player) buffering when i want to watch my movie so i can't use it to watch my movies directly from my LAN.
My question is, why my phone's rx-rate is 1Mbps when I have a router that support up to 54Mbps and why my transfer speed is up to 300Kbyte/s
Note: my devices are not so far(1 meter), and my signal progress bar is about 80%, although my Laptop in the same distance has VERY GOOD signal.
Have you tried the following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=471910
i checked it, don't have any effect on my device !!!
have you tried changing the power settings to better perfomance??

In the thread to "make the wifi faster", they got a "wonderfull" speed up to 1900kbps... kiloBITS per seconds ! As kiloBYTES (the only interesting measure) it's an incredible ~240kB/s. It's just BAD for this kind of connection...
The WiFi on HTC devices is just there to be on the description of the device, cause it's just slower than a good HSDPA (around 4Mb/s or 500kB/s).
I can confirm I only got around 300kB/s using my G router. It's just not useable (you can expect a minimum of 1MB/s for a WiFi G and a max of 700kB/s for a B).

And with 200 kByte/s i can't see my movies from my LAN? because Core player continiusly buffering
It is important for me, I can watch my movies with my HTC-HD device
do u know any other solution to watch my movies directly from my LAN without pouse ?

I totally understand your problem, cause I'm trying to do the exact same thing (transfert avi and watching vids on my phone from my server using WiFi).
Yes - have exactly the same problem!!!
Router G mode, wifi G patch on HD, and speed about 200-300kB
I have the same speed problem with my home router ASUS WL-500w + sometimes it keeps disconnecting and connecting every 2 seconds.
I tried different WIFI router (Huawei) and it seems to work fine.
Tx-Rate shows 54Mbps and Rx-Rate shows 54 Mbps too.
+ with this router it was working on really long distance.
So i think the problem is in my ASUS router.
Today I'll try to use alternative firmware in my ASUS router. Maybe it will help.
Tried with 3 different radio roms, and with each ones, never more than ~300kByte/s... We don't even need WiFi G for this speed !
I wonder... is it because the device is defaulting to 802.11b instead of 802.11g?
one test could be to set your router to ONLY 802.11g......
[Q] Do you have speed problems with Wifi? (N-band)
I have wifi N router and set to N only. I have two laptop both wifi N capable. When I transfer file usung file sharing betwen two laptop I m getting speed abt 3Mb/s but when i transfer file between laptop and SGS I only get speed of 300 Kb/s. SGS support wifi N standerd then why it so. Well I use ES file explorer to access file in my laptop over Wi- Fi.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
It's a mobile device, they have lower throughput and probably only 1 antenna (most 802.11n devices have 3). There are a lot of factors, but basically, all that's important is that it supports the 802.11n protocol. Optimisation may lead to faster speed boosts over time though.
Network traffic might also be set to a low priority to help ensure the phone runs reliably for other tasks, but I have no idea why exactly it's slower exactly.
I get 1.5mbs from my nas and wireless n network
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
i get 19.5mb downlaoding speed
and 4.3mb uplaoding speed
on my wi-fi
my connection 500/500mb
I m talking abt internet speed. I m asking abt file transfer speed betn my SGS and laptop
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
87 Mbps according to mine
i'll grab a screen shot when i get back home
87 seems too much I only get 25 while copy file on hard drive it self
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
that's actually low for me, but is better than nothing
my PC down in the cine room gets around 218+ Mbps
I get about 80Mbps laptop <-> network (802.11n 5Ghz), and about 5Mbps SGS <-> network (802.11n 2.4Ghz). Not horrible, but certainly not wonderful. I wish it had a 5Ghz radio too, so I could turn off my 2.4Ghz stuff :-/
[Q] Do you have problems with Wifi? (N-band)
Since my phone is on it's way to the repaircenter I would like to ask you all this Question.
I have problems with my wifi connection. The strange thing is, is that my router is brandnew! b+g+N!!!
The weird part is that it has only problems with the N-band
SO I hooked up another wireless router only with the b+g band and BAM it works.
But that's just messed up to have 2 wireless routers one for laptops and one just for my mobile phone...
So can u try the same thing and give me your comments about this issue?
there was already a topic about this
however one topic we did not touch base on, on the other topic was about the B+G bands
if you read the documentations you'll noticed that for N to work at full speed, it must only listen to N no B no G
when you use Mix mode, N doesn't work well
to use N, you need 2 bands, B + G only needs 1 band
if you enable all 3 B+G+N you only get 1 band for all, so making the N useless
the trick is to update all your old hardware that still runs G or B to N
then you can use pure N, and gain full speed
the SGS phone can run up to 87 Mbps on N
meanwhile computers can go up to 280+ Mbps

[Q] manual wifi fix app?
Hey, like many Android users I'm often having problems with Wifi not connecting to APs. While that can be fixed by restarting Android that takes a lot of time and is more than annoying. There are some apps to solve this issue, they "fix" wifi whenever the screen is turned on (e.g. http://www.appbrain.com/app/wifi-fixer/org.wahtod.wififixer http://www.appbrain.com/app/blade-wifi-fix/com.bladewififix).
That however I don't like either as due to the fixing taking place always wifi connection becoming established takes quite a lot of time. So my question: Is there an app that fixes the wifi connection but does so only manually, e.g. by clicking a widget button?
[Q] Can't connect to Wifi?
I select my Wifi network, I enter in the password, it says connecting, authenticating, connected, remembered, then it says disconnecting, searching, authenticating, and it repeats. The H at the top never disappears, no Wifi icon ever appears, what is the issue exactly?
And yes, I am connecting to a Wireless-G signal.
Don't worry I can't connect to your home network either so it's not a problem with your phone
I suggest you delete the password from the router and try and connect .
If you connect setup again with the password .

I had the same problem and i manage to fixit with "WIFI STATIC". It's free on Market. Access your router config and add your Galaxy Mac adress, then fill the parameters in WiFi Static. It Works! Never had problems again! Oh, i think you have to put your's computer(s) mac adress too in the router.
is there really no such app? :-(
Is there a way I can USB tether my tablet to my phone? I believe 3.1 has USB host support, so if I got the USB adapter for my tablet would it be able to use it for internet? I don't want to buy the adapter before knowing if it's going to work.
The reason I'm asking is that I've always used USB tethering on my Evo 4G when tethering to my laptop, and I get great speeds. However, I tried wifi tethering for the first time today with my Galaxy Tab and found that download speeds won't go above 250 kilobits/sec, while upload speeds are 1.2Mbit/sec. From my phone the speedtest still shows 6-7Mbit/sec download speeds, which is the same that I get over USB tethering. Wifi tethered download speeds are also this slow when using my laptop. I tried disabling encryption and disabling CPU scaling (ie set min and max freq at 1Ghz) in case the phone was CPU bound, but it had no effect. The actual load on the phone was minimal during a wifi tethered speed test (3% usage). So there must be something wrong with wifi tethering on my phone.

Hmm, I wonder if logcat and/or dmesg have any useful info. It could be an issue of the usb networking driver not being present, or it could be something simple like the tablet not using dhcp to ask for an IP or DNS server.
Guys
I have not been able to stream 5 secs of the transformer video or any youtube video without significant stutter and lag. I have plenty of speed with my home wifi as far as i know. I have 20+mbs with Comcast and never have issues with my wifi.
what could be wrong...is it my N7 or my router?
I'm so happy someone else has this issue. Well not happy but happy to know I'm not the only one. I have 30+ download on my home WiFi and it lags when I try to watch YouTube also. Its very annoying. It can't be my WiFi because I have tried several other devices and they work great. Hopefully an update will come and fix soon because I'm an avid youtuber. But yeah your not the only one man.

try do a speed test see what's the through put you get on your device. Also, in the wifi setting, see at what speed you are connecting to your wifi router.
Speed test is 27mbps and my WiFi settings speed is 54mbps. I don't see a problem?

yea, doesn't seem like any problem with your connection. Did you try streaming via other apps such as hulu or only lags in youtube?
Some thing you can try:
1. wipe youtube memory and try it again. You can even try uninstall it and download a fresh copy from the market. If still lags, try #2
2. install the flash apk and try streaming youtube via another browser such as Dolphin HD and see how it works out.
what would you suggest I use for a speed test?
using speed test.net app my speeds are
1659 kbps DL
and
4592 kbps UL
seems like i might have a router problem if that's all i'm getting on the DL
my hardwired LAN gets 24 Mbps

If that's the speed you are getting through a router then there is a problem, perhaps router related.
Go to wifi setting on N7, tap on your current wifi connection, it should tell you the speed you are connected. Ideally it should be 54mbps or higher depend on your setup, but based on your numbers it seems it's connected at much lower speed, below 15mbps I'd guess. My 3g dl speed is even higher than that.
use your phone or another wifi device to do a speed test again, if similar low number then check your router's wifi configuraiton or change a router.
Last night I was on Netflix watching Weeds and the only time there were any hiccups was at the beginning of the episode when Netflix was adjusting the quality to my internet connection. By the end of the theme song there was no noticeable stutters and I believe it had upgraded to HD 720p. So Netflix seems to not be a problem.

My Cell phone HTC One S is even worse on wifi....352 kbps DL speeds.
I have a pretty new router. this doesn't make sense to me.
I just noticed the cap-out link speed of 65Mbps too. The manual says that the N7 is 802.11b/g/n capabile, so I figured I should see at least 150Mbps (if not 300Mbps like my laptop).
Anyone else noticing this low cap-out? Is this a software issue of the N7 or a hardware issue that I should have my unit exchanged for?

Normal G router will have max of 54mbps so looks like you have a N router since you are connected at 65Mbps. Some wireless N router can only output 150mbps and some will do 300mbps. Most of modern mobile device's wifi N adapter is only rated up to 150mbps however. 65mpbs is really on the low side for N network but still sufficient unless you wish to do a lot streaming withing your own network. Keep in mind that, if you have both G and N wireless device connected to your router at the same time, the link speed will be reduced depend on your router's configuration.

I have verified that I can connect to the router\access points in my place at speeds between 242-300Mbps no problem. I have no G devices connected. It appears that the N7 is capping out a 65Mbps.
My question was whether anyone else (other than Rugged96 and myself) is seeing this in their WiFi connection info?

I guess N7 will have a max of 65mbps just like most of the phones out today mainly due to the single antenna. To get higher N speed you need multiple antennas (MIMO)
I won't be able to deconstruct my router until later tonight. I am working from home and need to stay focused....

So it is a limitation of the physical hardware...That is good to know. I was worried that something was wrong with my tablet.
Thanks!
Man that is BS!!!! Your telling Me I can't watch an HD movie on YouTube because the tablet went let me??? Why do they even have the option to go HD then? My internet pushes out 35mbps. That should be more then enough to run HD.

No problems here. Watched transformers Friday night with no problem. Sunday my wife used the timewarner app to watch NASCAR. I have even used the watch ESPN with no problems tethering from HOX. Not saying its not your N7 but it sounds like a problem with your network. Unplug cable modem for a min or do a reset through the GUI. Maybe reset the router while at it.

Is the phone's MODEM speed limited to about 50mb/s?
My internet speed is 70mb/s as measured on my computer WiFi connected to my router. The max speed the phone is showing is 48-49mb/s while sitting right next to the computer.
Is there a (build.prop) mod that can speed up the phone's WiFi speed? The phone is rooted.
Your computer could be using a different wifi band than your phone. Computer's speed often differ from the phone. Also both the devices have different types of antenna and operating power levels. I don't think messing with the build.prop would do much.
Let me ask the question differently. Is anyone getting faster than 50mbps on this phone? I am not.
The phone is rooted running 2/1/19 update OEM ROM Potter. Router b/g/n broadcasting at 2.4gHz only. Internet download speed is 90-100mbps on the computer. Phone and computer speeds measured 2 feet away from the router using the same Comcast speedtest app..
