[Q] USB tethering - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

Is there a way I can USB tether my tablet to my phone? I believe 3.1 has USB host support, so if I got the USB adapter for my tablet would it be able to use it for internet? I don't want to buy the adapter before knowing if it's going to work.
The reason I'm asking is that I've always used USB tethering on my Evo 4G when tethering to my laptop, and I get great speeds. However, I tried wifi tethering for the first time today with my Galaxy Tab and found that download speeds won't go above 250 kilobits/sec, while upload speeds are 1.2Mbit/sec. From my phone the speedtest still shows 6-7Mbit/sec download speeds, which is the same that I get over USB tethering. Wifi tethered download speeds are also this slow when using my laptop. I tried disabling encryption and disabling CPU scaling (ie set min and max freq at 1Ghz) in case the phone was CPU bound, but it had no effect. The actual load on the phone was minimal during a wifi tethered speed test (3% usage). So there must be something wrong with wifi tethering on my phone.

Hmm, I wonder if logcat and/or dmesg have any useful info. It could be an issue of the usb networking driver not being present, or it could be something simple like the tablet not using dhcp to ask for an IP or DNS server.

[Q] EVO tethering via USB - Updates 9/2010

OK, so I don't want to use EasyTether or PDANet. I also don't want to pay Sprint a penny more than what I am already paying them. So, I start hacking, debuggin, looking, searching for ways to get the usb tethering working. Here is what I found.
If I turn off Wifi on my laptop, connect PC to EVO via USB and enable WiFi on the EVO, then connect to my WirelessN LinkSys Router.
AND when I connect I choose the USB Tethering option.
It works, what.....yeah, it works.
13.47MB down/3.78MB up, life it good.
I am rooted, used the downgrade to 2.1, root with unrevoke, upgrade to 2.2 procedure defined here at XDA.
Now the caveat, if I use 3G and not WiFi, I get the notorous Error Code: 67
Now, somewhere in this haystack at XDA I saw a thread talking about cheat codes, but for the life of me, I can't find it now.
What I am thinking is SPRINT disabled the modem, I need the code to enable the modem. OR, Sprint did something to disable the feature, need the code to enable the feature.
Anybody ???
um... if you're rooted just install Cyanogen rom and use the built in USB tethering without having all that funky bs. Works with WIFI + 3G.

Are you sure you are connected to the phone itself and not to the original wireless network? Your upload speeds seems out of place... even on 4G it should be close to 1 Mbps, download speed also seems suspicious... a few members have hit 10 Mbps but 13 sounds way off.

i agree.
the phone is picking up the data connection from the router, and passing it along to your laptop. therefore the laptop is just getting its net from the router as well. you are not "tethering" off of your mobile data.
I have the same problem.. I called Sprint and they said I had to pay 30$ to use the usb modem.
By the way, I tested my speed in NYC and it reached 10Mbps on download and 1Mbps in upload. There are some places in NYC where you can get 4G signal.
lol... your just using wifi from your router
Ok, so I use easytether and wireless tether sometimes , but my download speed on my laptop compared to my phone are terrible. Is this a normal occurrence, or am I missing something.

[Q] Who is rooted and tethering with a mac via USB?

Title says it all folks. Who here is using an Epic, rooted and tethering just fine via USB? Only one catch....without using PDAnet or other third party apps. Just the phone.
Thanks in advance.
I have no idea how to do this for the life of me, but why not stick with wifi tether? You can lock the phone or put on access control so only you can access it...

Because these phones heat up quite a bit when running a 4g radio, plugged into a charger, and the wifi radio. I want to tether via usb so that I'm getting power while I tether AND don't have to turn on the wifi radio.
Cut down on heat, increase the life of your battery and phone.
Besides that, it's a feature of the phone that I paid for and I want to be able to use it. Lol.
Ues this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388 to root your phone and install clockwork mod
Then flash this kermel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786988 i'am useing the one from 10/24/2010
Then instell this moded wired thether http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803335&highlight=Usb+tether
If u need more help let me know and I can try to help
O BTW USB tether works just fine ;-)
Cool. Thanks for the tutorial here.
I've been trying to be nice about my data and pay for tethering through Sprint without rooting and doing wifi tether/usb but I'm finding that this Epic doesn't play nice with Mac and USB and there's a glitch which doesn't allow me to do 4g hotspot AND voice at the same time. Every time I get a voice call, the hotspot drops the 4g connection as if I was using 3g. ONce the call ends, the phone reconnects to 4g and continues on. I've brought both of these up to Sprint with no resolution as of yet.
is there any advantage using usb vs wifi? besides what you mentioned, but speed wise. is one faster than the other? or are they pretty much the same. i tether alot with wifi and i usually have my phone plugged into the wall charger whenever i do and notice it can get kinda hot sometimes. if there is no speed diff id prob go wired also

Speed is the same with 3g as for 4g I have no idea its not in my area :-(
Zulu have u tryed the wired tether app I linked to with a Mac? I'm going to have to test it on my friends macbook. I'm at my girls right now and the only pcs arond are both runing win7 32
I'm running SRF 1.2 w/Genocide 1.1. Earlier tonight, using qbking's excellent video, I used the Spring Hotspot hack. Everything worked perfectly and I can now wirelessly tether my Epic to my PowerBook G4. However, trying to do a wired tether is another story. Although my network preferences lists the Samsung SPH-D700, clicking "connect" doesn't seem to work. What happens is that it'll saying "connecting" for a few seconds, and then I'll get a pop-up reading: "Internet Connect A Modem error occurred. Please verify your settings and try again." Is there a proper way to configure the network preferences for this modem so that I can wire tether my Mac laptop to my Epic?

[Q] Is it possible to use USB Tether AND 4G at the same time?

I tried using the USB Tether to share my phone's 4G internet connection with my laptop, but everytime I do that, it disconnects the 4G and turns on 3G.
Is it not possible to USB tether 4G?
Reason why I'm asking is because I noticed on avg a 1mbs drop in speed when sharing internet over wifi.
I do know that it works fine with easytether, but I'm not sure about pdanet or native.

Sent from my rooted Evo...duh.. MIUI rom.
4G and the stock evo usb tethering does not work. However pdanet works fine, but seems to limit speeds to ~4-5 mbps. Also, you need to install a client on the pc making use of it, not to mention having to pay if you want to access ssl sites.
Find wired tether on the market - it works well with usb without the speed limitation. Your pc detects the usb connection as a ndis connection. You will still need drivers, so include them on your sd card. Initially, setup the usb connection as disk drive so you can pull the drivers.
I've seen speeds peak as high as 12-13 mbps with usb tether during off peak times. Never seen speeds that high with wireless. Of course, for basic browsing, 4-5mbps is plenty.
+1 wired tether

4g tethering slow to macbook pro? keeps hanging... anyway of speeding this up

in the uk, on the ee uk network and have 20gb monthly data
i have created a hotspot but it always hangs
anyway of speeding this up, on my tablet device its a lot faster and doesnt hang, so im guessing it could be an issue with my macbook 2013 retina 13' or is there something else i can try?
I am having exactly the same issue with my Z3 COmpact + MacBook Pro 15" Retina 2013.
Tethering with my 1+1 no problems -.-
This makes no f:ing sense.
Try USB tethering, I think the WiFi chip in the z3c is **** and can't handle tethering at full speed. Install HoRNDIS for your Mac to enable USB tether.
Im on t-mobile here in USA.I tether to me Sony laptop and me ps4 streaming fifa at the same time zero issues

I often use the WiFi hotspot on my Z3C with my Macbook Air with no slow downs in speed. I do not tether it though.
Probably depends more on the speed or maybe I have a faulty unit. My LTE reaches around 50-60 Mbps when I use the WiFi hotspot it drops to 20-25 Mbps with both my Mac and PC. When I use the USB tether I get full speed.

Bypass Verizon 600kb/s Tether Limit with PDANET+ BUT WITHOUT increased latency.

This is more for people who live in rural-ish areas (Like Me), who can't get decent internet for gaming.
I HAVE NOT TESTED THIS METHOD ON BLUETOOTH OR WIFI TETHERING, ONLY USB.
People who use Verizon tethering as a everyday necessity for home PC access, knows there's a 10-15gig cap.
I'm sure you all use a app like PDANET+ or so on to bypass it, but don't you notice the increased latency?
(Can also cause increased speeds because you're technically using Verizon's tethering, not PDANET+'s)
This is a fix for that, more like a bypass I suppose.
1) Install/Purchase PDANET+ from play store.
(I'd link it, but this is my first post, they won't let me.)
2) Turn on USB tethering in app, BUT DO NOT CLICK CONNECT ON YOUR PC YET.
3) Turn on USB tethering on through your phone and connect it to your PC.
(Let this connect)
.4) Now connect PDANET+ tethering through your PC.
Very simple.
What I've noticed is that PDANET+'s connection is not used but in fact STILL hides all tethering usage.
By inspecting my Ethernet in/outputs through task manager I noticed PDANET+'s connection is not in use.
But the original phone tether is, if you watch it, while opening a website, it will show 0kbps sent and received.
BUT the graph will show that it's actually sending a full speed NON-throttled connection.
Which means you're getting fasted speeds, and better latency typically (not in all cases) than PDANET+'s.
That's about it for my first post, ya'll play around with it.
Thanks!
