Low Wi-Fi speed on LAN

I've noticed the following problem:
When trying to download (file copy/video play) from my LAN to the HD, download speeds maximum is about 340 kbps (LOL...that's like EDGE) . With the same setup (wireless "G" router) I can download on the HD from internet with speeds 2 000+ kbps. LAN operations between my PCs/laptops are @ 60 000 kbps wired and 20 000 kbps wireless (using the same setup). To access my LAN from the HD I'm using Resco Explorer....and at that 340 kbps speed it's not possible to watch movies from my LAN. No such problem with my other PDA (iPAQ HX4700) which is not even "G" but "B" device - speed is about 3 000 kbps. Can anyone confirm this and suggest a solution? Can anyone watch movies from LAN encoded with more than 400 kbps?
p.s.: Speeds are measured using DU Meter (for PC)

if you are using the default memory card that came with the phone, it is only a class 2. the write speed isn't spectacular, this may not be the reason. but it's the only variable i see right now. since your can download stuff to your phone from web at good speeds. i think it's more of a problem with the machine that is "uploading" or hosting the video. check the upload speed of that machine.

I think the memory has nothing to do with the problem. And I've tried with different host machines - the same result.

Slow network speed through WIFI
I have to same problems on my HD. I am using a home server at home which holds all of my videos. When connecting to it and watching a video with my old Eten X800 everything works fine and runs smoothly. But doing the same on my HD results in an unwatchable video. If I copy and paste this video on my mem card on the HD the video runs smoothly. There are some strange things going on with the WIFI speeds on the HD
Anyone worth investigating this issue?

Yeah... the strange thing is LAN speed is much lower than Internet speed using same network equipment

The Host could be PC/another PC/Laptop - the results concerning the HD are identical, which means the problem is not from the Host nor the network setup.

Did you check the power saving settings in the WiFi parameters ?

it could be toggled/switched on "better performance" for better speed and "best performance" for g protocol. But the device will be hotter!

These settings affect both Internet and LAN performances but Internet speed is OK and LAN speed is slow. And yes, I did play with the settings - results are the same. (because I'm 2-3 meters away from the wireless router). I'll be glad if someone with HD, actually tests a connection between his HD and a PC in a LAN and not just giving "blind" suggestions. What I want to know is if it's a problem with all HDs or just my device is faulty.

the nerd in me just want to go to your house and troubleshoot this for you in person. LOL... anyway...
what is the file you used to test in each case? the reason i'm asking is that some files are more compressed than others, and the speed we see is the NOT the raw speed -- the capability of the wifi card. but the combined speed of the CPU processing power and the network speed.
long story short, if you are downloading, the data is broken up and transfered piece by piece -- a movie is broken up and transfered bit by bit. depending on the file, the receiver side needs to process these bits and recombine them back together. it's much easyer to recombine a webpage, text file or equivalent. but mp3s, rar/zip or movies are already compressed/encoded with special algorithm, so the receiver processor needs to chew through these data to recombine them, so it won't accept faster than it can "chew".
of course this may not be the reason for your problem at all, but try transferring a large text file (copy and paste text from a website to notepad and c+p over and over, till you have a ~ 10MB txt file).

Even on copy files (not trying to play them, hence no decompression) just copy from PC to HD, no matter what the file type is, the speed is that - 340 kbps. Why don't you just try it yourself?

Does it really improve speed? I find WIFI a bit slower with the yweak installed.

With my HD the same slow speeds. Tried several different hardware. Only HD is slow as hell. WIFI speed tweak does'nt do much, btw.
Some speed results:
WIFI Setting Best Battery / Resco Explorer 7.05: 45 KB/s
WIFI Setting Best Performance / Resco Explorer 7.05: 300 KB/s
WIFI Setting Best Performance / Total Commander/CE v2.51: 600 KB/s
So Resco does not work well with local shares. won't be using that anymore when c/p'ing. Altough speeds are doubling with TC it still is'nt fast imho.
Noone else tried this and encountered the same problem?

I noticed the exact same problem last night when trying to play some TV shows over Wi-Fi from my PC. The file played OK for a couple seconds, then stalled
Using "Network Plugin for File Explorer" from HTC, I get an ave. speed of ±340kbps. The speed is the same whether I save to memery MC or phone memory. So the write speed of the MC has no bearing on the problem.
PS. Just tried on my work network with the same results...

Lucky you guys... I at best performance get ~120kb transfer and at optimal I get ~80kb transfer (copy) with Resco on wrt54gl with ddwrt on it

Wifi sucks on touch HD

When I first bought the touch HD I was thinking how good it would be to have this phone while having wifi with the lack of 3g for tmobile in the us, but it turns out that the wifi acutally suck! I have a iPod touch 2g And the wifi works great with blazing speed. I can't seem to detect my wifi at home mean while I'm connected on my wifi with my iPod. I been very disappoint with this phone for simple fact that this phone recieves wifi poorly. Anyone can help me out with this problem would be much appreciated because despite the wifi problem I love the phone cause the 3.8 screen is so damn sexual lol.

Try to set wifi power options to performance. Also, Enabling G Mode (with SKTools is one of the ways) helps improve speed.

Thanks for the info but it might be the lack of range of my router cause I have been on my wifi with the phone before but I get disconnected frequently and most the time it doesn't even show up or detect it but I don't have that problem with the iPod. With iPod I seem to get wifi everywhere. I'm starting to believe the iPod is better might sell it and get a iPhone or maybe a hero but don't know if I'm willing to spend 600+ on another phone

My wifi connects well to open, WEP, and WPA connections. I tried numerous access points (at least 30), even 802.11n APs in mixed g mode. It even connects to Apple Airport (802.11g). The connection is stable both on power saving and best performance, but I think I get much better speeds on average with best performance.
Its wifi range is much better than my little HP 613 smartphone, but again worse than my notebook. I get 54Mbit connection with signal quality of about 50% at 10 meters through a wall and then it automatically finds another channel on another AP. It roams (handover) APs better than some Lenovo r61 laptops around!
But I am not satisfied with its speed (even on best performance) - it finishes copying a 700MB file on a 54 Mbit connection in 30-40 minutes using total commander and saving on storage card. That means average speed is around 300-400KB/s - laptop does the same (same AP, same file, same network settings) at 1.6-1.8 MB/s in around 7 minutes.
I also noticed that saving on storage card is slighty faster than into the main memory...

I can't seem to detect my wifi at home mean while I'm connected on my wifi with my iPod.

Hmm, are you sure that you don't compare two different situations ? Did you also try connecting to Wifi with your iPod while already being connected with your Blackstone ?
My personal experience shows me that the Touch HD seems to have a better radio than the iPhone 3G. Have you upgraded to the latest Blackstone stock ROM and radio available on the HTC website or XDA Devs ? Whether or not the radio also affects Wifi unfortunately I don't know.
Moreover, use WifiMonster to monitor the strength of the signal, it'll help you discover the best spots for using Wifi. I even receive Wifi signals from the neighbors' houses in my own house (not speaking about appartments), of course that always depends on the room !
BTW I'm pretty sure that a Hero won't solve your problem, it's the same old hardware specs as on the Blackstone.

The Wifi on my device works perfectly and i have had no issues at all with signal or quality. I have had more problems with my ipod than the HTC, are you sure its not the WIFI AP you are trying to connect to? Also are you using stock rom or custom?

I'm using the Energy ROM. I'm assume its my wifi signal its very weak and my touch hd cant seem to detect it. With my ipod i shows up and i can connect to it...will updating the radio make a difference?

I came across a startling discovery the other day regarding the Touch HD wifi. I was also having issues at home with weak wifi signal. I didn’t seem to have this problem with public access hot spots.
I have a Logitech wireless mouse connected to my computer and very rarely turn that computer off. I found that when my computer was off I would get a rock solid connection to my home wifi, but when the computer was on it would drop in and out. I narrowed it down to the wireless mouse was interfering with the Touch HD wifi connection.
I tried all different channels on my router, but as long as the Logitech mouse was plugged it I would get wifi dropouts. But as soon as I unplugged the mouse and the radio dongle, I wouldn’t have any problems with the Touch HD wifi.
I can’t comment if this is your issue, but something might be interfering in the 2.4Ghz with wifi.

As Poison Wolf correctly pointed out, other household items can interfere with the wireless frequency. Try changing the channel that's being used to transmit from your box (This will involve changing some settings on your wireless router so do some research before you fiddle around with it) I have had to do this before and can confirm it can make a massive difference.

Everybody has this problem because the card seems not capable of more speed.
But it seems nearly nobody cares.

Hmm, interesting. The only reasoning I can think of is that perhaps there's a limiting factor in order to reduce the heat or something? I don't see why they would cap the speeds.

[Q] What's the connection speed with your WiFi N router?

I recently got myself a new Type N WiFi router. On my old B/G Wifi router my SGS connected with 54MBit/s as it is supposed to do.
I was expecting to see a connection speed of 300MBit/s now (I'm not talking about the effective transfer rate, just the connection speed) but instead my SGS connects with very variable speeds to the router but never exceeding 65MBit/s.
Is this normal or do I have to do some specific settings in the phone or in the router?

my notebook computer connected at 300Mb/s while my SGS is at 72Mbps. HD(720p) playback through network is smooth.

its normal, sgs has only one antenna, look it up, for 300 Mbit u need 3 antenna.

You are talking about the transfer rate, I asked instead about the connection speed. You might be able to see this logging into your router. Your slow transfer speed probably depends of the fact that you are connected with your PC through Wi-Fi too. Connect the PC by cable and your transfer speed will at least double.

my all-time maximum is 72Mbps
and its not even effective
when transferring files it uses about half of that speed
720p is indeed smooth

[Q] Wifi Streaming Lags

Guys
I have not been able to stream 5 secs of the transformer video or any youtube video without significant stutter and lag. I have plenty of speed with my home wifi as far as i know. I have 20+mbs with Comcast and never have issues with my wifi.
what could be wrong...is it my N7 or my router?

I'm so happy someone else has this issue. Well not happy but happy to know I'm not the only one. I have 30+ download on my home WiFi and it lags when I try to watch YouTube also. Its very annoying. It can't be my WiFi because I have tried several other devices and they work great. Hopefully an update will come and fix soon because I'm an avid youtuber. But yeah your not the only one man.

try do a speed test see what's the through put you get on your device. Also, in the wifi setting, see at what speed you are connecting to your wifi router.

Speed test is 27mbps and my WiFi settings speed is 54mbps. I don't see a problem?

yea, doesn't seem like any problem with your connection. Did you try streaming via other apps such as hulu or only lags in youtube?
Some thing you can try:
1. wipe youtube memory and try it again. You can even try uninstall it and download a fresh copy from the market. If still lags, try #2
2. install the flash apk and try streaming youtube via another browser such as Dolphin HD and see how it works out.

what would you suggest I use for a speed test?

1659 kbps DL
and
4592 kbps UL
seems like i might have a router problem if that's all i'm getting on the DL
my hardwired LAN gets 24 Mbps

If that's the speed you are getting through a router then there is a problem, perhaps router related.
Go to wifi setting on N7, tap on your current wifi connection, it should tell you the speed you are connected. Ideally it should be 54mbps or higher depend on your setup, but based on your numbers it seems it's connected at much lower speed, below 15mbps I'd guess. My 3g dl speed is even higher than that.
use your phone or another wifi device to do a speed test again, if similar low number then check your router's wifi configuraiton or change a router.

Last night I was on Netflix watching Weeds and the only time there were any hiccups was at the beginning of the episode when Netflix was adjusting the quality to my internet connection. By the end of the theme song there was no noticeable stutters and I believe it had upgraded to HD 720p. So Netflix seems to not be a problem.

oddly enough it says my link speed is 65Mbps....checking my other phones.

My Cell phone HTC One S is even worse on wifi....352 kbps DL speeds.
I have a pretty new router. this doesn't make sense to me.

I just noticed the cap-out link speed of 65Mbps too. The manual says that the N7 is 802.11b/g/n capabile, so I figured I should see at least 150Mbps (if not 300Mbps like my laptop).
Anyone else noticing this low cap-out? Is this a software issue of the N7 or a hardware issue that I should have my unit exchanged for?

Normal G router will have max of 54mbps so looks like you have a N router since you are connected at 65Mbps. Some wireless N router can only output 150mbps and some will do 300mbps. Most of modern mobile device's wifi N adapter is only rated up to 150mbps however. 65mpbs is really on the low side for N network but still sufficient unless you wish to do a lot streaming withing your own network. Keep in mind that, if you have both G and N wireless device connected to your router at the same time, the link speed will be reduced depend on your router's configuration.

I have verified that I can connect to the router\access points in my place at speeds between 242-300Mbps no problem. I have no G devices connected. It appears that the N7 is capping out a 65Mbps.
My question was whether anyone else (other than Rugged96 and myself) is seeing this in their WiFi connection info?

I guess N7 will have a max of 65mbps just like most of the phones out today mainly due to the single antenna. To get higher N speed you need multiple antennas (MIMO)

I won't be able to deconstruct my router until later tonight. I am working from home and need to stay focused....

Man that is BS!!!! Your telling Me I can't watch an HD movie on YouTube because the tablet went let me??? Why do they even have the option to go HD then? My internet pushes out 35mbps. That should be more then enough to run HD.

No problems here. Watched transformers Friday night with no problem. Sunday my wife used the timewarner app to watch NASCAR. I have even used the watch ESPN with no problems tethering from HOX. Not saying its not your N7 but it sounds like a problem with your network. Unplug cable modem for a min or do a reset through the GUI. Maybe reset the router while at it.

Slow wifi speeds on Shield TV 2017

Just got the new shield tv box and my wifi speeds are incredibly slow. Get 100 mbps on all my other devices, but 5 mbps.
Anyone know of a solution?

i have exactly the same problem on 2.4ghz wifi. i even put the router right next to the shield tv. still only 6-10mbit (max. 15mbit) while i have a 100mbit connection from my provider. on the 5ghz wifi i get about 60mbits but on both i have huuuuuuuuge packet loss every 3-7s. makes gamestream impossible :/
i even bought a new router. tried with my standard fritzbox 7390 and now with a new linksys wrt1200ac. results are the same slow and bad connections to shield. everything else (i.e. notebook, smartphone, pc) works just fine...

Unplug any peripherals connected via usb and try again. This means wireless mouse, usb hub, etc.
I've found the only way to get consistent speeds with the shields wifi is to use a usb hub that has it's own power source.

Can confirm. Having an extremely hard time streaming anything in 4K on Netflix. 350 mbps Download and 30 mbps Upload. Netflix network speed test shows like 29 mbps... I installed a browser and went to Fast.com and get about 80 mbps. Downloaded the "Fast" app on my Pixel XL and immediately got 250 mbps down standing in the same room connected to the same 5 GHz Wireless-AC network. Amazon Prime eventually decides to stream in UHD and HDR, but it takes a while. Youtube, oddly enough, streams in 4K almost immediately.
Router is an ASUS RT-AC1900P.

I'm still having issues. Has anyone solved this problem?
There was an update recently and the performance in Plex seemed to get a little better, but high quality videos still stop and buffer.
Are there any debug tools on the shield that could be used?

Ok so I had terrible performance on 2.4ghz. on 5 GHz it only connected once so decided to have a look at my modem settings and tweaked it.
Have it set to
802.11a/n/ac mixed
Channel auto channel 112
20/40/80 MHz
Everything working smoothly now with no dropouts

I'm having the exact same issue with my new 2017 Shield. If I restart the Shield, it will occasionally work at full speed on 2.4 OR 5 Ghz. But most of the time, it's under 10 mbps - transferring from the internet OR from my PC that is hardwired to my router. I already had an RMA done, and I'm having the same issue with the new Shield NVIDIA sent me. I've tried every channel possible, used tools to find the proper channel, etc. Same slow speed. None of my other devices have the same issue, even in the same location. Nothing is attached via USB.
What's the deal? Any solutions?

Having problems as well. I have my wirless router I'm a good distance running 350mbs and I can pass the test for the games. When I try to play the games they instantly show I'm having wifi problems.
