Back button broken, any substitutes?

Hey guys I just got a G1 for real cheap and fund out its back button does not work. I opened the phone up and the metal contact the button clicks on is broken.
Is there any way I can assign the back button to some other button? I will probably do it to the click wheel since I don't plan to use it for navigation.
Thanks
Edit: is there a way to remap the trackball as the back key?

The next step after finding the cause of the problem, is REPAIRING it. You know how a button works? There are two contacts on it, when the button is UP, the contacts are disconnected from each other, when the button is DOWN the contacts are CONNECTED to each other. You just need to rig something up to connect/disconnect the two contacts.

[Q] Proper way to assemble volume key

For all you Repair guys,
How do you re-assemble the volume up down key without damaging the buttons on the flex board.
Do you attach the back housing then insert the volume key?
Or it has to be done with both back housing and volume key at time of assembly?
hints tips please
In for an answer
This is driving me crazy as well! Has anyone figured it out? I get it in there and som, etimes volume up will work, but not volume down. The official HTC video doesn't show how to do it exactly. It does show the volume key being in there when they put the chassis back in the plastic shell part though.
I just repaired another hd2 I installed both the volume key and housing at same time and worked, It didn't distroy the tiny buttons on flex this time.
JUst go slow and do not force it
use some tape to hold the volume button in the housing while you install the chassis / screen into it.
Vol keys button installs just before u put backside, put button and align, then CAREFULLY put backside and snap on.find best angle that buttton holds himself in normal position then snap....

[Q] Is there any way to flash the rom without volume buttons

Hi Friends,
My HD2 digitizer was broken when I got it and I decided to replace the digitizer by self. Everything went well, and when I assembled the phone back I noticed that I have damaged the side volume buttons they dont click at all.
so My question is there any other way to flash roms. I currently have a android Sense 3.0 rom loaded on to it. Please advise....
No you can't that
you could just search the forums. there were some threads about broken volume buttons and as far as i can remember solutions were found for your problem.
Any thread links???? please....
boot into recovery and the HOME & WINDOWS BUTTON act as a volume up or down,so u can select what u need using these buttons

The problem is difficult to diagnose from your description alone, there could be various factors involved, from faulty flexes, to digitizer and mainboard connectors.
I suggest if you are asking what you need to repair, you need to talk to a professional. And if you can potentially manage the assembly/disassembly, the volume key membrane is a part of a main flex that connects pretty much everything, it cannot be purchased separately or attached.

Get the main flex cable replaced instead..
In the long run, it's not going to work out well when you need to adjust the volume during a call or such.
