Hi all,
I had an accident and fell flat down to the ground with my TyTN in the belt pocket, exactly between my hip bone and the ground.
Now I have some more cosmetic plastic issues, but this would be acceptable. The bad thing is the Mail button is like a "sensor key" now, but works. The really bad thing is, the plastic speaker item inside (connected to the toppoly board, the speaker where the sound during calls comes out) is completely smashed and there's no more sound.
Since the rest is perfectly well, no screen damage (and no wrong alignments!!!) I would like to keep this phone but need a new speaker.
Could you guys help me to find such a speaker? The only part number on it is
501E6234A . It is a white plastic part, two gold connectors on the board side, a metal cover (now smashed) and a membrane on between the cover. You can see it on the attached pic, it's the white plastic rectangle in the middle.
Any help would be very much appreciated!

I am sorry, but I don't have any good news... I was in contact with a German company that usually repairs all kind of mobile phones for sales companies. They told me since the device is still too new they haven't received any replacement parts yet. The only way to have it repaired would be sending it in to HTC.
I did that in December and am still waiting for it to come back - and what it will cost.
How did you break your phone?

I've done some digging around, and may have found a suitable alternative It looks like the Motorola L6 / L7 might use the same part...
I figured the speaker would not be unique to the TyTN - some other phone or PDA must use the same one - so I went looking for disassembly instructions for other phones in the hope that they might show the same speaker.
If you check Step 9 in this pdf you can see what looks like the same earpiece speaker (even though it looks like they may have unfortunately damaged it during removal - you can see the metal face plate is still attached to the front of the phone.) What do you think?
I've ordered one to see if it fits - I'll let you know what I find
I didn't actually break mine - I bought one from eBay, only to find that the earpiece distorted if you turned the volume up So I took it apart and found that the metal shield on the front of the speaker was dented slightly - I guess enough for the speaker membrane to hit it.
If the Motorola speaker works, maybe you can get your phone back from HTC before they charge you a fortune?

Difficult to say if this the TyTn front speaker (earpiece) is identical to the one shown in Motorola PDF, might well function ok even if specs are slightly different though. In terms of delicate electronics were at the ironmongery end of the scale here!!!

The speaker in your photos looks exactly like the one in the TyTN - are they of the TyTN earpiece or the Motorola one?
EDIT by Mike - The pictures above are of the TYTN fron speaker/earpiece. And we now know the Motorola L6/L7 does work as a replacement.
I know that it is a complete offtopic ... but this is the reason why I use the aluminium case for my Vario II it just saves lifes ..
Just as an update - the replacement Motorola speaker that I was sent works fine
It was not a perfect match for the old one - it was necessary to slightly bend the contacts outwards to make sure that they made proper contact with the pads on the circuit board - but other than that replacement was simple. Sound quality of the new speaker is fine, and seems a bit louder than the original, although I could be imagining that
In case anyone else has the same problem, the only place in the UK that I could find advertising the necessary part was Phatphones (see "Speaker/Earpiece for Motorola L6/L7" on this page.) The part was quite expensive compared to other replacement speakers, but as I said it was the only one available.

When your speaker out of order, did you try to using the orignal headset? I have the same accident as you did. But ,There is no sound at all.I try to using the orignal headset, but still don't work. I am not sure , if it is the speaker problem or the sound IC problem. Now. I can only using the Bluetooth headset.
Hey all, watching some flash videos today made me notice how poorly the N1 puts sound out the back speaker, even compared to my old G1. I remember back in my Blackberry days that people used to mod the backs to "let more sound get out", and so I started looking into this...
First off, the speaker is GINORMOUS in relation to the slit. If you look inside the back where the speaker is, you can see a little internal grille, and the small slit for sound to escape. There's also a TON more room where that grille isnt attached to the back (same shape as the slit, only about 5x the size) that could be milled out pretty easily, and still retain the "keep crap out of the back" feature of the grille.
So, this leaves me with a few questions:
Where can I get a replacement back, in case my mill catches a bit more than I anticipate?
Anyone else interested? I figure if I set up to do one, I might as well bang a few others out instead of setting up multiple times.
Once I get a second back, I will be going at this with pics and hopefully notable improvement in projecting sound into my hand, and back toward my face!
I might not be a software hacker, but when it comes to this sort of thing, I figure its the best way I can give back to the community!
Give HTC support a call and tell them your cover doesn't line up properly(I don't think any of them do) they'll send you out a replacement. If they don't they can sell you one for ten bucks I think.
Hope to hear good results from your mod, might do it myself.

Take the back off, play music, put it on. Notice it gets louder when you place it back on..

Yea, I think the OP should test and see if there's even a noticeable difference without the back cover. I would think not...
Try removing the cover, sounds WAY worse.
Yes, I completely realize the back sounds bad off, its acting as a resonator, or isolating front from back waves of the speaker, which causes phase cancellation. Thus why im not removing the cover, just making the one hole bigger. It SHOULD not lose the "low end" that it has with the back on (if you want to call it that.
Either way, Im hacking at least one up, Ill post results!

I would suggest to replace the speaker with a Desire one, some people who have both phones pretend it's way louder on Desire, and yes it's the same form factor and size so it should fit
It is quite a bit louder without the cover but sounds bad due to the lack of resonance.
Shouldnt be too bad with just an enlargement, make sure you put something to block out dust. Let us know how it goes.
I've found that attaching one of these to the back quite useful...
or try a vuvuzela
I think the engineer who designed that whole was well aware of resonance qualities. If you make that whole and turns out better, you should apply to HTC job hehe...

hah, I've never seen anyone else do it, but I do this all the time if I'm showing people a video or am in a noisy setting (ie. party)

Nah, everyone does it.. I mostly do it when I want to listen to something quiet, I can turn it down and redirect the sound towards me.
I actually have a really good pair of earphones. I prefer that the main speaker is in the back, instead of in the earpiece like some phones. Prevents earspeaker blowout and call quality is damn good with this phone so far.

I try to put it up against a wall. Your hand can work to absorb sound waves, thus deadening sound and lowering overall quality; but drywall bounces the sound waves back nearly impeccably. Desks, etc, any hard surface should do the trick.
I am thinking about do-it-yourself (DIY) speaker replacements for the TF101.
I pulled mine out and found the plug connector is part similar to JST 04SUR-32S. It is 0.8mm pitch so the wires have to be thin.
I have found a couple different speakers that fit. The square dimensions must be under 25mm x 11mm (12 might work), and thickness is unsure but must be under 7mm. I also will evaluate round at 11mm diameter.

The part number on speakers in the tablet is "tek 1505". I think the 05 stands for 5 ohms, just a guess.

Old news: Got my speakers pulled, need to test originals on an oscillator.
New news:
Got replacement speakers, but they are a little to big. Will see if they fit next time I open my tablet.
Got replacement plugs for wiring harness, 04SUR-32S. I think it is a match, and will test fit next time I open my tablet.
This morning I made a replacement wiring harness with some top quality AWG 30 wire and a replacement plug (04SUR-32S). The quality of my wire seems better than original, so I might replace the original wiring harness if the original speakers test okay.

So, I have a few extras (min order 100) - selling some. Recommend a few (5?) because it takes practice to crimp in the wires. Also, I might make a few replacement wiring harnesses - and sell some wiring harnesses instead.
At this point, I am not 100% sure they will fit in the circuit board but they *look* like a match to the original. PM me for info.

I also have a few varieties both larger & smaller than the standard speakers. In about one week I will be doing more hardware hacking.

I replaced the speakers on my A101 a few months ago. I usually use Digikey for components, but Mouser had a surprising amount of speakers. Have you looked for stock there yet? In my testing, all speakers around this size have a sharp linear falloff under 100Hz, so I focused on getting the highest SPL efficiency, I think I ended up around 96dB/V.
P.S. Why are you bothering with new plugs for the speakers? I usually just desolder the old ones and use their harnesses. Not an attack, just wondering.
How difficult is it to disassemble and reassemble this tablet? I asked the guys over at ifixit if they were going to do a teardown of Transformer but they said they have no plans at this point. Does the battery look DIY if it is ever needed?

Wondering why you don't look at an enclosure/driver that works....IE the iPad...not the 2.
What did they do that ASus obviously didn't??
The transformer is a consumption device, and by god, as such it had better deliver sight , sound and recording of same with steller results...zsent mine back and returned to my Ipad2 for that very reason.
... hoping the crappy audio I/o will be solved with the next iteration...

Update: I never got reply from speaker supplier. Could use more suggestions on suppliers. So, I will have to go with what I have found already - 2 sizes slightly off.
Great suggestion hesynergy. I will check out the iPad 2 speakers.
I am still planning to do mod in near future. If someone else wants to attempt you can PM me and I will make you a speaker wiring harness. You can remove the originals and try a second set without damaging originals.
Other distractions at the moment. I got two 4000mAh 7.4v batteries (8000mAh total) that might (should) fit in the dock. I need to disassemble the dock or tablet to measure the power connector so I might do speakers at the same time.

I sent my transformer for RMA and they sent it back and again the speaker does not work. On the paper I received they mentioned that they changed a sponge.
I can not be bother to send my transformer back to asus.

well asus responded with very little help. they gave me a list of possible sites to find the part, but none of them had it
My left speaker also doesn't work, but when i squeeze left side it works. So I wonder how difficult is to open device and did anybody succeed in repairing original speaker. I guess resoldering some connection is all it takes.
I am also hoping somebody will find better speakers, but just having both spakers working would be a great improvement for me.

Mine did the same but eventually it stopped, i took my tab apart and it didnt seem to be the connection itself, i think it was the actual speaker, unfortunately i dont know enough about repairing speakers.

Hey there, I got my Nexus 10 today and I'm overall pleased with the device but something caught my attention and I was hoping that other Nexus 10 owners would help me. The device is fairly big and seemed to have large speakers at both the left and right, but I noticed that when I play music or watch something sound only comes out from the top of the speakers. So what, is the large speaker look just for show or is there a problem with my tablet? I'd appreciate any answers
I think it's just for show. Pretty sure the "actual" speaker area is 2 small "squares" at the top corners of the device. Not entirely sure if sound is supposed to travel through the entire speaker area on the sides of the tablet or not though, but it doesn't seem like it does :/

Sound doesnt just bend and get routed all throughout the speaker grill, that's not how sound waves work.To do something like this would be massively complicated to do and probably sound terrible. The only practical way to do it would be to use 3-5 speaker drivers per side. and actually have speakers all throughout the grill that you see.

Thanks for the information. But the question wasn't how it would be practical but how it is right now and unfortunatly I hear no sound comming out from the whole speaker grill, only the tops.

Yeah, played some music and the sound is coming from the top corners.
Ya, speakers only on the top, similar to the Gnote 10.1. The guys at Powerbookmedic did a full tear down, and posted photos as they removed each part. The photos show what the speakers look like in the inside.
You can muffle the speakers quite a bit if you cover the top of the grill with your thumb, but anywhere else, it sound is unaffected.

The speakers we see are indeed for show. The actual speaker is just a square at the top. Somewhere on here there's a picture of the internal components of the N10. If I find it I'll post a link.

Wow. I knew they were at the top but I did not think that was where the speakers were located. Those aren't even in the area of the grills...
Not complaining though. I still think the sound on this device is just fine for my taste.
How loud is the sound outputted? I'm coming from Asus tf700 and the sounds so weedy on that tab - any better?
Yes, it's much better than the TF700t. I had to use equilizer on the TF to get decent out. The N10 is much better right out of the box. No apps needed.

Recently I found my Z3c had a dramatic drop in earpiece volume. I could barely hear the caller's voice when in a quiet surrounding (like office or home), and impossible to follow the talk when outside. This was quite annoying, because it's a phone and making calls is one of its essentials regardless of whatever extra functions added to it. So I did a lot of work trying to bring the volume back. I rooted the phone (eventually), tried some sound mod, and even worked on the mixer_paths.xml directly. None of these gave me any luck. As the problem seemed irrelevant to the software flaw at the stage, I was thinking about possible hardware cause.
The first thing I did was to open the top side flap, which covers the micro SD and USB. Then I made a call to my voicemail and compared the voice I heard from both the flap opening and the top speaker. I could tell immediately that the sound was much louder and clearer from the flap opening, while the sound from the top speaker was distant and isolated. Wait a sec...
From my research on posts, I was told that there is a film lying on the speakers to make the Z3c dust proof. You can see them through the speaker cuts. To allow the sound goes through it, the film has to be perforated. Could those tiny holes be blocked after spending time with dust, water and soap (yes I did wash my Z3c frequently, thanks Sony for the water proof!). A user did mention the volume on both speakers were much gained after removing those films. I don't want to go extreme, but that did give me a hint.
So I used a pair of tweezers, with pointed tips. I slightly scratched them on those films. Immediately the color changed from dark black to lighter gray. I kept scratching them and made the grey evenly, and made another call to the voicemail. Guess what...the earpiece volume was noticeably increased! Then I airbrushed those films and tried again, this time I could not tell the improvement, but the sound was loud enough that I could hear the voice even from a distance. Now the sound coming from the flap opening would also match with that from the top speaker. I would call it a success.
To summarize: what I did was simply cleaning those meshed films on the speakers, by scratching dust off them. These films can be penetrated if you pushed too hard, so please be gentle. And I'm not sure if this trick would work for others, I'm just sharing my experience, with a good wish that this could work for others who are also bothered by the low in-call volume as I was. Still, try those software fix as well, as the cause to the same phenomenon may be different.

done, so far great improvement with sound, i can hear the other person on the phone better --- but not sure about my bottom speaker, its very hollow.
This was one of the reasons why I'd sent in my phone. I thought the speaker was broken. Seems they've just cleaned or replaced that mesh because the volume works well on the returned phone.

Great tip bro. Immediate improvement to volume level. However I guess I pushed it further that the sound is now cracking at high volume when the phone rings.

Those of you who are claiming this works, could you please go into your service menu (*#*#service#*#*) from your dialer and run the stereo speaker test? Do both speakers have the same volume output or is one significantly louder than the other?

So, I'm almost embarrassed to report that I had no issues with my earpiece, but thought I'd give this method of "cleaning" it out a try. I used a piece of chewing gum to remove any dirt from the screen and almost immediately noticed a drastic DECREASE in output from that speaker. Now, calls sound hollow and tinny, and the stereo speaker affect is nearly gone because the top speaker is so much quieter.
I'm afraid that I somehow caused my top speaker to produce less sound by trying this method. I've tried to wipe away any sticky residue caused by the gum, but nothing seems to help. I can't send my phone back to Sony because it's been rooted and they wont honor the warranty. I can't believe that thin piece of speaker grill would actually be able to block sound. What now?
I managed to get higher volume by cleaning the upper speaker with a chewing-gum but my operation removed the thin grey layer. Do you think I've lost waterproof?

No you haven't. Speaker attached to the lcd panel by a plastic staff so water can't goes inside.. I removed the speaker cover too but i admit without that cover phone looks ugly

Has anyone tried replacing both speakers with Z3/Z3 dual/Z3+ ones? I was looking at the pictures of spare parts and it might be possible to put some of those in our Z3c, since the sound on Z3c is really low by default, and the ones on Z3 do sound quite louder.
I had same problem, could barely hear a phone call. I scrapped off the black material protecting the speaker now I can hear through the earpiece. I'm guessing now the phone is not water proof..
