Hey all, watching some flash videos today made me notice how poorly the N1 puts sound out the back speaker, even compared to my old G1. I remember back in my Blackberry days that people used to mod the backs to "let more sound get out", and so I started looking into this...
First off, the speaker is GINORMOUS in relation to the slit. If you look inside the back where the speaker is, you can see a little internal grille, and the small slit for sound to escape. There's also a TON more room where that grille isnt attached to the back (same shape as the slit, only about 5x the size) that could be milled out pretty easily, and still retain the "keep crap out of the back" feature of the grille.
So, this leaves me with a few questions:
Where can I get a replacement back, in case my mill catches a bit more than I anticipate?
Anyone else interested? I figure if I set up to do one, I might as well bang a few others out instead of setting up multiple times.
Once I get a second back, I will be going at this with pics and hopefully notable improvement in projecting sound into my hand, and back toward my face!
I might not be a software hacker, but when it comes to this sort of thing, I figure its the best way I can give back to the community!
Give HTC support a call and tell them your cover doesn't line up properly(I don't think any of them do) they'll send you out a replacement. If they don't they can sell you one for ten bucks I think.
Hope to hear good results from your mod, might do it myself.

Take the back off, play music, put it on. Notice it gets louder when you place it back on..

Yea, I think the OP should test and see if there's even a noticeable difference without the back cover. I would think not...
Try removing the cover, sounds WAY worse.
Yes, I completely realize the back sounds bad off, its acting as a resonator, or isolating front from back waves of the speaker, which causes phase cancellation. Thus why im not removing the cover, just making the one hole bigger. It SHOULD not lose the "low end" that it has with the back on (if you want to call it that.
Either way, Im hacking at least one up, Ill post results!

I would suggest to replace the speaker with a Desire one, some people who have both phones pretend it's way louder on Desire, and yes it's the same form factor and size so it should fit
It is quite a bit louder without the cover but sounds bad due to the lack of resonance.
Shouldnt be too bad with just an enlargement, make sure you put something to block out dust. Let us know how it goes.
I've found that attaching one of these to the back quite useful...
or try a vuvuzela
I think the engineer who designed that whole was well aware of resonance qualities. If you make that whole and turns out better, you should apply to HTC job hehe...

hah, I've never seen anyone else do it, but I do this all the time if I'm showing people a video or am in a noisy setting (ie. party)

Nah, everyone does it.. I mostly do it when I want to listen to something quiet, I can turn it down and redirect the sound towards me.
I actually have a really good pair of earphones. I prefer that the main speaker is in the back, instead of in the earpiece like some phones. Prevents earspeaker blowout and call quality is damn good with this phone so far.

I try to put it up against a wall. Your hand can work to absorb sound waves, thus deadening sound and lowering overall quality; but drywall bounces the sound waves back nearly impeccably. Desks, etc, any hard surface should do the trick.

some information:
1. I have closed the camera app normally. I didn't suddenly took out the battery while the app is running.
2. The noise is actually pretty loud even with the battery cover on.
3. I used normal strength to do the experiment in the video. I didn't intentionally increase the strength to make it a problem.. Just like you casually put the phone on the table ...

Thanks bofslime, I would say the actual noise is louder that the one in that video. My original phone only makes noise while taking pictures. If you shake it, it won't do so. But this replacement does. That's why I become so nervous and want to check how's everyone's doing.

The consensus is that it's the auto focus mechanism on the camera rattling. Mine does it too and I suspect most (every?) other nexus one does too.
It's kinda annoying, but nothing 'wrong' as such.

My camera rattles a little bit too when I shake it and/or give it a light tap on the battery cover near the camera. Hoping it's normal....
I've noticed this issue without a case and with the Otterbox.
Ringtone volume is cut in half if it's sitting down on a flat surface. If it's propped up a bit, the volume gets twice as loud, making it easy to hear from another room.
Has anyone else noticed this and done something about it? Was thinking of trying to find something small to stick to the back of the phone that would raise it up a bit when it's set down.
It's just science. Pressing the speaker against a surface will always muffle it. But raising it slightly above a hard surface will cause the sound to reverberate off the surface and will make the volume sound louder.
I have a piece of velcro (the soft side) stuck to the back of my phone where the Google logo is that I use to mount the phone with in my car. It achieves the effect you desire perfectly.
That is because the ringtone sound comes from the speaker on the back of your phone. Cover it up and it is going to get lower. Put it on its face.

But, the OP is right that it will actually sound the loudest if you have it on it's back, slightly raised, so the sound is reverberating off the surface. And, if you are using it as a speakerphone, you will muffle the mic by laying it on it's face.
I personally wouldn't have added the velcro just for this reason, but it does come in handy when using speakerphone at my desk.
I can understand the science behind it. I didnt realize he was trying to achieve maximum sound, just that it was going quiet on him. Even with my Diamond, I used to cup my hand around the speaker to direct the sound at my face while I watched Youtube. Still use the technique with my Hero.
The flip side to this is that it seems to have much better sound quality when it's set down on a hard surface. Music sounds much better when my phone is sitting on my desk than when I pick it up or have it in my shirt pocket. Seems to have better bass when lying down, less "tinny" sounding. (Not that you're every going to get *amazing* sound out of such a tiny speaker, though.)

I have a little different problem. When I put my phone on silent mode, I can't hear the phone ring. Is there something wrong with my phone?

Hey guys i'm thinking of getting the surround and wanted to ask people who already have it what happens when you play music/phone rings when the phone is closed? Does the sound come from the hidden speakers? won't that sound muffled? or what? thx!
From what I can tell, even when the phone is closed the sound still comes from the same speakers. So the sound does seem muffled by the front plate of the phone. However, the quality of the sound is still great for a phone even with the speaker closed. If I'm listening to something, I usually leave the speaker slid out though.

and on a related note, why is there a speaker grill on the back of the phone too? (see attached pic)
I like the weight and feel of the phone compared to the other thiner/lighter models. It feels like a solid well made phone. I definitely use my phone more for music now and really like the Zune integration. The large speaker bar provides crisp clear sound that remains clear at the highest volume. There are three different sound modes (changed by pressing the silver square button on the speaker bar): Normal, Dolby Mobile, and SRS Enhanced.
Overall I like the Surround, I'm a bit disappointed in the lack of customization (true for all WP7 devices) but I expect that will improve over time. I'm also looking forward to some more great apps.
As for the back cover, that appears to be a vent hole as there is no speaker (at least visibly) behind it.
If you are going to get a WP7 and enjoy using your phone for music/media then I think the Surround is a great choice.

You don't really notice any muffling of the sound until you slide the speaker out, and even though, I wouldn't say it makes a HUGE difference - a difference yes. I think the phone, while it has a nice solid quality feel, is a bit thick for my liking. Coming from an iPhone 4, then Samsung Galaxy S (super thin), and now this, the Surround almost feels like the Tilt 2. I just ordered the Samsung Focus (I think the HD7 is awesome, but I wouldn't be able to enjoy 3G since I'm on AT&T). I hope the Focus is thinner.
That speaker looking grill is just that, it allows the sound to have an alternative venue to escape in the event that the speakers are covered. Thats what helps keep the sound crisp and clear when the phone is in the closed position. Think if it as a ported sub-woofer box... Well at least thats what the HTC rep told me

I thought that's what it was for too, but I don't know if it's very helpful.
If you get this phone and use the alarm like me, just get use to leaving the speaker open. It's not really a big deal.

The speakers sound FINE whether open or closed. There is a grill on the back that helps when the case is closed. I think all this stems from a couple of dim witted no talent reviewers who trashed the entire phone on this one caveat.
Despeite what a few of them say, the phone has great audio, great video, great everything, the phone is NOT bulky, the screen is plenty bright with good saturation, the zune software does a great job of converting videos.
The only limitations of the phone are those of the OS and that will certainly improve over time. In fact there are already 2500 apps available, many for free, that extend the abilities of the phone and you can bet your whiskers MS is working on upgrades right now. Someone just put out an app where you can vote on what improvements you want to see next. There are new apps appearing every day so having the phone is fun....that's what we do here...tinker and maximize our toys until the next one comes out ))))

Not to be a pain, but can you stay on topic? We are talking about the sound when you do not slide the speaker out. No offense intended, just saying...
I failed to mention that the sound is definitely muffled when closed. Is it still loud? Yes, it's fine, but definitely better when slid out.
Well, my beloved Moto X is now on it's way to El Paso, TX to be dissected and man-handled. I got a little tired of the gook in the microphone port and used compressed air to clean it out. Turns out this is a pretty dumb move to make :crying: I'd actually done it once before without incident, but this time it must have perforated something.
While I know this is my own dumb fault, I've *never* broken a phone before. I have a decent collection of completely scratch-free and 100% functional devices, I'm disappointed that this was fragile enough to be broken so easily. OK, yeah, it was probably the equivalent of hitting some Saran Wrap with a hurricane, but still disappointing.
My advice to everyone is to be extra careful with that particular awkwardly placed dirt-trapping hole in the front of your phone. I wasn't about to stick a pin in there, but my chosen alternative proved to be just as tragic. I have to assume that an equal amount of vacuum would also yield similar bad results. Not sure how we're supposed to clean this thing, or perhaps more importantly why it's designed in such a way that it would get so filthy in the first place.

If there is a way, that might be something to send to Motorola for feedback. I'm sure they are really interested in getting feedback, being this is the first flagship Motorola/Google phone: Moto X.
That and the vibrator issues, and other mechanical/material/tooling issues should go there.
I like this phone and I think it has some good potential, but as a first release after an acquisition/rebranding, I'm sure that feedback will help make future devices better.

How do you know it perforated the mic? Also, did you stick the nozzle for the compressed air right on the mic hole?
there are the moto support forums. https://forums.motorola.com/hives/a440c30711/summary its the best way i know of to make suggestions/complaints etc. the forum manager forwards anything worthy over to the right people.
as far as the gunk. i would get a pin or needle, and a piece of tape. gently pull out the stuff and use tape to pick it up.
i also ruined a brand new iphone 4s with compressed air. trying to get the sand out of it. worse decision i ever made. but i managed to turn it back in and buy a gs2. one of those rare instances where a wrong does make a right.

Can't be 100% certain, of course, but I noted that if it was placed near an extremely loud source it would start to barely register some sound pressure. I took that to mean a membrane of some kind got ruptured.
And yeah, that's exactly what I did; stubborn dirt was in there! It's quite honestly one of the absolute stupidest things I've done in a long time. :crying:
@phermey, I dunno about a pin, if there is indeed something that can be perforated/ruptured, that seems like a bad idea. The tape suggestion reminds me of that yellow goo they used to (still do?) sell for cleaning keyboards. Ever seen that? You smush it all around your keys and it sticks all the Dorito crumbs to it. Comes right off. I bet something like that would be ideal here if it's viscous enough to get into the hole at all.
I just hope it comes back fixed without any new damage from being disassembled. It was pristine! I'll contact Moto with what happened, but again, AFTER they fix it for free. I won't lie if they call me out on it, though

Can you expound on this? Are you using some sort of app to gauge the sound pressure or is it just simply not responding to voice commands or something?
What is everyone talking about stuff getting into the microphone? I don't see anything in mines. I have a white Moto X. Do I have to put a flashlight into to see if anything is in it or something?

Putting some earplugs in, cranking up a speaker and putting the X right next to it would get the Google Voice Search to just *barely* register something as evidenced by the graphics it uses. A sound meter app (forget which one; sorry, but Android SensorBox is an old friend with this feature in it) would get up to about 10dB that way or close to 20dB if I shot more air at it point-blank. It was definitely shot to hell, but the underlying electronics still functioned if given enough "stimulus" Totally borked.

I did EXACTLY the same, and ruined the microphone, but the not-that-bright side is that my warranty expired a month ago (Bloody hell).
Did you get a replacement for your microphone for a decent price?

Found this thread *after* I did the exact same thing.
Always been annoyed by the pocket lint/fuzz that gets in the microphone hole. Never cleaned it out. Wife brought home some compressed air for another purpose and I gave it a try. Red straw, held it 3-4" from phone, cleaned out the hole nicely. Wasn't until a couple hours later I realized no one could hear me. OK Google Now also didn't work.
Very stupid on my part, phone was flawless. Only upside is it was 2 years old.
So I saved up an got Nexus 6P hoping to keep it for 2-3 years. Exactly 14 months, you guessed it no warranty left, the volume while I am on a call is really really low. I can hear someone when I am in a quiet room otherwise it is not possible to make out what the other person is saying. While driving a car, in even a slightly noisy room I have to turn on speakerphone to make a call.
I tried putting a tape on the back mike, not using protective cover, someone suggested I hard reset. All tried to no use :crying:
I am running stock and at this point desperate to find a fix. can't afford another phone and this one is no good other than in my bedroom :crying::crying:
Someone is saying replace the top speaker. I don't want to resort to that unless you guys think that is the only option.

We can be friends. I have the same problem. Don't bother changing the speaker. I did and it makes no difference. Did you install any sound mods like I did? In all probability, it's something to do with the sound chip in the motherboard. God knows I've tried everything. This might sound crazy but I'm about to get a second hand unit. I haven't finished with this phone and can't do without front facing speakers unless I'm prepared to pay a lot for the pixel 2. It feels like someone has taken away your half finished dinner.

I had the same issue, along with my voice being muffled on the other side off the call. I used an air compressor and that works perfect for me. It was like night and day. it's a pretty powerful air compressor so maybe that's why it worked for me and not you. Or maybe you had gunk that needed a solvent. Either way it's worth a try to use an air compressor. I would be careful not to use too much pressure cuz I'm sure that could cause some damage at a certain point.

I had the same issue, along with my voice being muffled on the other side off the call. I used an air compressor and that works perfect for me. It was like night and day. it's a pretty powerful air compressor so maybe that's why it worked for me and not you. Or maybe you had gunk that needed a solvent. Either way it's worth a try to use an air compressor. I would be careful not to use too much pressure cuz I'm sure that could cause some damage at a certain point.

Thanks for the input. My gunk couldn't be removed even with an electrical compressed air gun (don't know the term). A friend tried earlier. Really glad I came across this repair shop. Was ready to buy another 6p.
