I am thinking about do-it-yourself (DIY) speaker replacements for the TF101.
I pulled mine out and found the plug connector is part similar to JST 04SUR-32S. It is 0.8mm pitch so the wires have to be thin.
I have found a couple different speakers that fit. The square dimensions must be under 25mm x 11mm (12 might work), and thickness is unsure but must be under 7mm. I also will evaluate round at 11mm diameter.
Examples:
http://www.veco.com.tw/
square speakers
The part number on speakers in the tablet is "tek 1505". I think the 05 stands for 5 ohms, just a guess.
Thoughts or suggestions?
Let us know how it goes.. I have one speaker not working, I might want to try that too.
Thanks
Awesome. I am really looking forward to this. If you find some speakers that perform really good, let us know the specifications. I really would like some better speakers.
really looking forward to this, really would like some bass enhanced speakers...
Old news: Got my speakers pulled, need to test originals on an oscillator.
New news:
Got replacement speakers, but they are a little to big. Will see if they fit next time I open my tablet.
Got replacement plugs for wiring harness, 04SUR-32S. I think it is a match, and will test fit next time I open my tablet.
This morning I made a replacement wiring harness with some top quality AWG 30 wire and a replacement plug (04SUR-32S). The quality of my wire seems better than original, so I might replace the original wiring harness if the original speakers test okay.
I got my plugs from these guys: http://ecommerce.tlcelectronics.com/jst/04SUR-32S
So, I have a few extras (min order 100) - selling some. Recommend a few (5?) because it takes practice to crimp in the wires. Also, I might make a few replacement wiring harnesses - and sell some wiring harnesses instead.
At this point, I am not 100% sure they will fit in the circuit board but they *look* like a match to the original. PM me for info.
Any news on this?
I'm very interested in this too.
I found a supplier of speakers that are the same size as ASUS. So, I asked for a quote & samples over a week ago and I have not heard back. Waiting.
I also have a few varieties both larger & smaller than the standard speakers. In about one week I will be doing more hardware hacking.
Other people's thoughts and work interest me too. Ideas?

I replaced the speakers on my A101 a few months ago. I usually use Digikey for components, but Mouser had a surprising amount of speakers. Have you looked for stock there yet? In my testing, all speakers around this size have a sharp linear falloff under 100Hz, so I focused on getting the highest SPL efficiency, I think I ended up around 96dB/V.
P.S. Why are you bothering with new plugs for the speakers? I usually just desolder the old ones and use their harnesses. Not an attack, just wondering.
How difficult is it to disassemble and reassemble this tablet? I asked the guys over at ifixit if they were going to do a teardown of Transformer but they said they have no plans at this point. Does the battery look DIY if it is ever needed?
just wondering how this is going? i need to replace a speaker due to blowing out 1 of them and not being able to send off under warranty.
frankly dont know enough about this sort of thing to complete on my own but can test and contribute to get this done.
I did find a site with possible replacement speakers, but lost the link so trying to find it again.
anyway ill post when I find it, hope this is still being worked on!
Wondering why you don't look at an enclosure/driver that works....IE the iPad...not the 2.
What did they do that ASus obviously didn't??
The transformer is a consumption device, and by god, as such it had better deliver sight , sound and recording of same with steller results...zsent mine back and returned to my Ipad2 for that very reason.
... hoping the crappy audio I/o will be solved with the next iteration...
I really wanted the Xformer to be a winner

Update: I never got reply from speaker supplier. Could use more suggestions on suppliers. So, I will have to go with what I have found already - 2 sizes slightly off.
Great suggestion hesynergy. I will check out the iPad 2 speakers.
I am still planning to do mod in near future. If someone else wants to attempt you can PM me and I will make you a speaker wiring harness. You can remove the originals and try a second set without damaging originals.
Other distractions at the moment. I got two 4000mAh 7.4v batteries (8000mAh total) that might (should) fit in the dock. I need to disassemble the dock or tablet to measure the power connector so I might do speakers at the same time.
I will post everything when going on ....
found that link..
http://www.speaker-tw.com/manufacturer/speaker/rectanguler%20speaker.htm
admittedly, i haven't measured the speakers yet so dont know if these are anywhere near the size needed.
and also just realised this isnt a uk supplier, but none the less may come in handy.
just emailed asus asking for help. hopefully get a good response
I've been following this thread. I love hardware hacks. Too bad there isn't more of it spread among popular devices. I have to admit, I was hoping to hear a success story like, "I've done it! I integrated the port design from my Bose Wave radio and my Transformer has some b-b-b-bass!"
Till then, i'll keep lurking the progress here.
Hi Guys
I want to replace my speakers as well. The left speaker does not work
I sent my transformer for RMA and they sent it back and again the speaker does not work. On the paper I received they mentioned that they changed a sponge.
I can not be bother to send my transformer back to asus.
Have you found a speaker replacement and the hardness?
well asus responded with very little help. they gave me a list of possible sites to find the part, but none of them had it
My left speaker also doesn't work, but when i squeeze left side it works. So I wonder how difficult is to open device and did anybody succeed in repairing original speaker. I guess resoldering some connection is all it takes.
I am also hoping somebody will find better speakers, but just having both spakers working would be a great improvement for me.
Hi Divvet
Can you share these web sites that you got from Asus?
I think these speakers are really bad quality. I hope Asus to understand that
and to start replacing them with a better quality.
If someone find a good quality speaker and to actually fit I would be interested in
Lets see the results

Mine did the same but eventually it stopped, i took my tab apart and it didnt seem to be the connection itself, i think it was the actual speaker, unfortunately i dont know enough about repairing speakers.

Hi all,
I had an accident and fell flat down to the ground with my TyTN in the belt pocket, exactly between my hip bone and the ground.
Now I have some more cosmetic plastic issues, but this would be acceptable. The bad thing is the Mail button is like a "sensor key" now, but works. The really bad thing is, the plastic speaker item inside (connected to the toppoly board, the speaker where the sound during calls comes out) is completely smashed and there's no more sound.
Since the rest is perfectly well, no screen damage (and no wrong alignments!!!) I would like to keep this phone but need a new speaker.
Could you guys help me to find such a speaker? The only part number on it is
501E6234A . It is a white plastic part, two gold connectors on the board side, a metal cover (now smashed) and a membrane on between the cover. You can see it on the attached pic, it's the white plastic rectangle in the middle.
Any help would be very much appreciated!
Thanks in advance and greetings from Munich,
Torben
Hi Torben...
Did you ever find a replacement speaker? I have the same problem as you and need one
Thanks
Hey Fallingonion,
I am sorry, but I don't have any good news... I was in contact with a German company that usually repairs all kind of mobile phones for sales companies. They told me since the device is still too new they haven't received any replacement parts yet. The only way to have it repaired would be sending it in to HTC.
I did that in December and am still waiting for it to come back - and what it will cost.
How did you break your phone?
Torben
I've seen a few parted out Hermes on ebay - you might try that.
Hey lacroixdp,
thanks for this hint, too bad it's too late for me - but maybe Fallingonion can get a new speaker from there.
Greetings,
Torben

I've done some digging around, and may have found a suitable alternative It looks like the Motorola L6 / L7 might use the same part...
I figured the speaker would not be unique to the TyTN - some other phone or PDA must use the same one - so I went looking for disassembly instructions for other phones in the hope that they might show the same speaker.
If you check Step 9 in this pdf you can see what looks like the same earpiece speaker (even though it looks like they may have unfortunately damaged it during removal - you can see the metal face plate is still attached to the front of the phone.) What do you think?
I've ordered one to see if it fits - I'll let you know what I find
I didn't actually break mine - I bought one from eBay, only to find that the earpiece distorted if you turned the volume up So I took it apart and found that the metal shield on the front of the speaker was dented slightly - I guess enough for the speaker membrane to hit it.
If the Motorola speaker works, maybe you can get your phone back from HTC before they charge you a fortune?
Wow, yes, definitely looks the same - I simply cannot say anything about the actual size.
Let me know what comes out - too bad I already sent mine in for a repair! I doubt I can still get it back without a repair :-(
I am curious though anyway

Difficult to say if this the TyTn front speaker (earpiece) is identical to the one shown in Motorola PDF, might well function ok even if specs are slightly different though. In terms of delicate electronics were at the ironmongery end of the scale here!!!

That's what I'm hoping, Mike
The speaker in your photos looks exactly like the one in the TyTN - are they of the TyTN earpiece or the Motorola one?
EDIT by Mike - The pictures above are of the TYTN fron speaker/earpiece. And we now know the Motorola L6/L7 does work as a replacement.
I know that it is a complete offtopic ... but this is the reason why I use the aluminium case for my Vario II it just saves lifes ..
Just as an update - the replacement Motorola speaker that I was sent works fine
It was not a perfect match for the old one - it was necessary to slightly bend the contacts outwards to make sure that they made proper contact with the pads on the circuit board - but other than that replacement was simple. Sound quality of the new speaker is fine, and seems a bit louder than the original, although I could be imagining that
In case anyone else has the same problem, the only place in the UK that I could find advertising the necessary part was Phatphones (see "Speaker/Earpiece for Motorola L6/L7" on this page.) The part was quite expensive compared to other replacement speakers, but as I said it was the only one available.
Cheers all -
When your speaker out of order, did you try to using the orignal headset? I have the same accident as you did. But ,There is no sound at all.I try to using the orignal headset, but still don't work. I am not sure , if it is the speaker problem or the sound IC problem. Now. I can only using the Bluetooth headset.
Hi everyone.
The Ringer (Rear Speaker) of my Charmer has died. Does anybody know where I can find one in UK?
Or does anybody here sell this kind of stuff?
Thanks.
well you may try any speaker that can play loudly enough. in my old sony cmd-j6 i was using speaker from tetris game and it was playing louder than original with less noise
btw, what did you do that speaker is dead? i would recommend you to use multimeter to check if it is realy burned down, speaker has nothing inside that you could be damaged (of course, you can have burned down coil or damaged membrane)
P.S.: speakers do not like needels
Yeah, i've already checked with a multimeter. The speaker's coil is burnt out. I had a really loud ringtone (preamplified). I was using tomtom and while the tomtom was speaking, the phone rang and I suspect this caused a spike or something like that and the coil got burnt.
Needless to say, I won't be using that ringtone anymore.
And the problem with using any other speaker is that I don't know which one would fit the housing in the case as it is a pretty tight fit.
Any advice?
Thanks.

imho the best idea is to buy hardly damaged charmer (maybe prophet and other similar devices will use the same or at least simliar speaker). devices with broken display are cheap, coz they are useless for their owners.
otherwise, you can modify the plastic part that is carrying antenna tin. imho there is enough space to make speaker hole bigger and insert different speaker - the best way will be to consult right parametres with skilled electrotechnician...
Thanks for the info. I looked up on ebay and at the moment, couldn't find any old or broken charmer. Will go and ask at T-mobile shop first, if they have it and if they charge something like 40 quid, won't get it.
Then will start going for other options like modifying the case to fit any other speaker.
Anyway, contract about to finish in 3 months or so, so maybe will just leave it like that and get a new phone when contract finishes.....
My speaker broke the other day too!... wish i could get a replacement...
i have found this one:-
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Internal-spea...ryZ10364QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem
Thanks for looking jameslovell. But this one does not fit the charmer, and besides, i gave up looking two days ago and bought a random speaker and melted/reshaped inside chasis to fit that one
Now working fine
Thanks everyone for your help!
Hello,
Would someone please recommended a good/decent wired headset/mic earphone? Ideally one with the USB male end that the Tilt will accept.
Thanks.
if you have a good set of 3.5mm headphones you can use this

I just got mine, works great. A bit hard to insert the male into the kaiser for the first time (in my case it was to big for the female, lol)

I got something similar in the retractable InEar Isolators, also from Seidio (http://www.seidioonline.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=777)
i can confirm that they work well, both in the sense of working well with the kaiser and also working well in terms of sound quality. I have only had them for a while and don't make that many phone calls, but have had no complaints so far about the mic quality, but still too early to judge on this.
my main complaint is the way the jack bends to the right, which obstructs taking the stylus out on my kaiser. i can still take it out, but only with considerable effort.
Anyone know if a straight plug version is avail?

Thanks for that mini review. Is anyone aware of a seller in the UK with a straight plug version of these? I'd rather avoid the $25 postage they charge to post it to the UK. What an oversight to not consider whether the stylus can be removed properly when the headset is plugged in It makes me wonder if they actually tested out a prototype before putting them into production. The way I see it, the only acceptable plug shape is straight because even if it bent 90 degrees to the other side then it would interfere with any attached lanyard, bent up would obstruct the microSD slot and down means the device wouldn't sit flat.

Hard to beat his price - less than five bucks delivered in the US. I was impressed enough that I went back and bought a second pair.
The USB jack on the ones that I have bends 90 degrees to the left, so the stylus isn't covered.

Thanks for the link. It’s not worth me crossgrading from the original HTC supplied headset for those - they seem much the same sort of thing. If you look at the other link I was referring to you'll see they're the sort of earphones that go right into your ears. The problems I have with my current original TyTN II headset include the foam 'socks' falling off regularly (the original socks only lasted a month or two and as HTC don't sell replacements, I'm now using Motorola ones) also they're a less than comfortable fit. If enough people enquire with Seidio then it may speed up the process of them releasing straight plug versions (hopefully with a decent carrying box).

Alright, so I don't want to wait for Asus to repair the blown speakers on my tablet. I opened it up today and took a quick look, and it looks like you can pretty much replace the N7 speakers with just about anything. The connector to each speaker is just two wires, which I can easily solder to.
The only problem is that I have no idea where I might be able to buy decent speakers for a tablet. Are there retailers in the US that sell small components for tablets and laptops? Should I buy online instead? Has anyone else tried this yet?
Ideally it'd be cool to replace the speakers with something of admirably better quality, or just anything that is guaranteed to last longer than three weeks.
EDIT: I ordered some speakers from an Eee netbook on ebay. If they work, I'll post pictures.
Lol, waiting to receive new speaker will take longer then replacing your nexus 7

i have blown speaker too.
how bad is yours? mine only start to show distortion if volume >40%.
anything less than that speaker is clear and working fine.
i opened up the case and look at it as well.
realize the blown speaker is the one on the left (when screen is facing downwards, and charging port facing towards you)
wonder if i just cut the left 2 wires that powers the left defective speaker, will my problem be solved.

Both mine are blown, and the distortion happens at all volumes. I ordered some speakers out of an Eee netbook, no idea if they're going to actually fit. However, the nice thing is that it was only $5, and the connector on the end of them looks identical so I might be able to save myself some of the soldering work. I'll post some pictures if I manage to get them to work when they arrive sometime next week.

Probably, yeah. I haven't heard of anyone that hasn't be able to get it repaired under warranty. The only problem is that Asus hasn't responded to my RMA request after submitting it 5 days ago, so something tells me I'm going to be much better off replacing the speakers myself.

Ok guys I had a perfectly good Nexus 7. No screen lift or anything. Then one day I started a youtube video and my speaker decided it didn't want to handle the sound and blew. Very upsetting. Anyway it seems pretty easy to replace myself, already got a RMA from Asus but dont really wanna send it in. Problem is I can't find the OEM replacement speakers ANYWHERE! Does anyone know where to find some?

I saw where someone on here modded Eee PC speakers into his device. Supposedly they were quieter than the N7 speakers, but it was interesting. I'm in the same boat as you, my speakers blew out of nowhere and now my sound is atrocious. I'm probably just gonna go ahead and RMA, though.

You mean this one?
The biggest problem I had was ensuring that I had enough clearance to fit the speakers in. Most laptop and netbook speakers won't fit, so you need to take some measurements of the existing speakers before you decide on a set to install. The other problem you'll have is determining what kind of sound quality to expect from various speakers, since there's no specs posted for most laptop and netbook components like this. My first attempt with the Eee PC speakers only cost me about $5, but the end result left a lot to be desired, and they're not quite as good as the original speakers.
If you're comfortable working with small wires and understand some basic electronics, your best option would be to custom order some speakers from a components supplier like Digikey or Mouser Electronics. I did that a few days ago and will update the tutorial when I get them installed.
