Why change radios? - G2 and Desire Z General

I currently have the .27_M radio and have noticed there is the newer .30_M radio. What is the advantage to using a newer radio and should I consider upgrading to the latest one?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App

New radios aren't necessarily better. If you are happy with the wifi and 3g signals that you are getting, there is no need to flash a new radio.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

As mentioned above, if you are happy with your reception and battery life, no need to flash the radio. People will sometimes flash a different radio in an attempt to improve reception (and battery life related to reception). The "best" radio tends to be locational dependent. The newest one will not necessarily be the best for you in your area.
Some on here will say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" (which I tend to believe). But if you are having reception issues, it might be worth exploring.

Hi I have a unlocked bell htc desire z and I'm not really sure if its 4g because on the bell website it says 4g. if it is 4g I may need to change my radios once the 4g networks are launched here

you trying to hijack my thread -___-

sooo....
if i have a totally unrooted t-mobile g2 that gets horrible reception in las vegas, nv (a pretty big city which shows great coverage on the map), would updating my radio help? should i go thru the trouble of rooting and all that? and what radio would be best for someone in my situation? basically i can sit in one place and go from FULL h+ signal to edge, to just a little edge, to back up to full h+, to just a little h+ to just G, to who knows what else. it's ridiculous.

yea i saw that. i thought maybe i'd get someone with a stronger opinion like "YES DO IT AND USE THIS ONE" or something so it would push me a little haha. it may/may not work isn't really enough to get me going yet... i'm thinking about it though.

I didn't want to create a NEW thread, so I will post here since it's kinda similar to my issue. Please note that I DID the research, just couldn't find anything solid.
If anyone can help, I really appreciate it!
Anyway, I have a Desire Z (Bell, unlocked). I have a AT&T microSIM, put into adapter, put it into my phone.
It says H+ but I'm getting really slow Edge-like speeds.. Can anyone help me please?
Location: New Jersey. Once again, thanks!

Lol that's fine and all, but in the case of radios, there is no "best radio" it's a trial and error of which works best.
I spent a week or 2 to find the right radio back on my old winmo device.

All versions of the Desire Z support HSPA+ (but no other forms of "4G"). Don't know much about Rogers, are they achieving 4G simply by upgrading their 3G network to HSPA+, like AT&T is doing? If so, you should get "4G" speeds as long as the upgrades to the network have been done in your area.
If Rogers is going 4G by adding LTE or WiMax, then no change of radio is going to get you 4G on the Desire Z. Its completely different hardware needed on your phone.

Verizon LTE to work with EVO

I've been reading lots of articles relating to this and some that date back to early February. Yet I haven't heard much when it comes to making moves to making this happen. What's everyone's thoughts on this happening?

Impossible from what I understand nope cause is the next step for GSM network, and that's y thunderbolt uses a sim card, Idk if Verizon will become GSM in the future tho, in some countries cdma carriers have banish and became GSM but Verizon is huge in US so not idea

My God, do you even know what you're taling about?!
Verizon LTE chips work on 700mHz frequency. The WiMAX chips used on Sprint phones only work on 2.4gHz. How are these ridiculously different frequencies "quite similar"?
It's impossible. It's never happening. This thread should be closed.
I have heard alot of talk of how the hardware is very very similar its just software does not allow it, but could be changed to allow it. They even have panels that transmit WiMax and LTE. But as for the Cell phones I am not so sure.
that's really ****ing weird that the sprint CEO has been trying to work a deal out ...give me a second and ill get a link that u shove up ur trolling ass sideways

There's a lot of confusion about this......
Yes, WiMAX and LTE really are similar technologies, and yes, Sprint could very well convert WiMAX to LTE with relative ease. HOWEVER, we're talking about changes at the tower level, not for phones.
LTE on sprint would require new phones with new chips. The EVO will never, E V E R be able to run LTE. EVER.
Instead of looking up stuff that doesn't exist, try to understand the difference between a troll and post that is actually factual and informative from someone who actually knows what he's talking about.
/thread
Put it this way....u can buy an lte radio and then if/when they upgrade the towers to lte u can install the radio and try it out. Lol

And that has to do with the Evo how?
Do you think the EVO will ever get a C Band patch?
Yea...no. LTE uses different hardware from wimax in the tower AND the phone. It's supposedly easy to upgrade a wimax TOWER to an LTE tower, but in order to make the phone compatible with LTE, it needs a new LTE radio.
Unless Sprint and HTC are going to upgrade this phone (with the 3D supposedly coming in the summer) I would say this is definitely, positively not possible.
I'd be happy if they could master getting 3g to work. I live in the 2nd largest city in New York and waiting for 4g service reminds me of how it must be living in the rural areas and being able to only get a DSL connection. Anything over 256 kbps is cause for celebration. I don't care if they connect with a soup can and a string as long as they start providing the service performance they were advertising when I bought the phone. I got my EVO the day it was released, almost a year ago now, and you could litterally see the band width dropping month by month as the EVO's began gaining market share and taxing the system. If Sprint doesn't get it together soon I'll be considering paying the freight and moving to Verizon. They got neat phones too.
Yup...I live in northeast Wisconsin and with full bars of 3g connection I get about 200 kb down and 300 kb up ...its quite ridiculous how flooded the towers are ...if I go to a smaller city I get 2500kb down ...

Depends on where you are. Maybe at your current place is only EDGE available. You can also check the settings, maybe it's configured to only use EDGE to save some battery...

Hi.
Please do this:
Settings-Wireless&networks-Mobile networks (second one)-network Mode
Look here if there is "GSM only".
If you want 3G- set to WCDMA only or GSM?WCDMA auto.
Hope this helps.
Regards.
You could also check your provider's website and check the 3G-availability at your place.
Those maps are not accurate enough. The best thing you can do is call your provider and ask them about your problem.

one more quick question can i use htc inspire 4g apn setting for my htc desire hd a9191....yes or no....
With radio i meant the radio that controls the wireless connections of any android phone
Yes, the APN settings should be the same as on a inspire 4g if you have the same provider.
But don't forget: the DHD has other 3g frequencies than the inspire, so it's possible that the DHD can't catch 3g on several providers in the usa.

Atrix & Atrix 4G TR-US Different?

Hi.I'm a user from Turkey.I have a question. Can i flash Motorola atrix 4g roms on my motorla atrix?Because the version in Turkey isn't atrix 4g,only atrix. Some says it will brick my phone flashing atrix 4g roms. They are both mb860 but they say Turkish version do no support 4g network. Is there any difference between US and TR versions of atrix? Can i flash atrix 4g roms an kernels? Please advise need help
Theyre the exact same, the American Atrix isnt really 4G, its just really fast 3G, and that may not be available in Turkey. You'll still have 3G though, and Flashing Roms is safe as far as I know.

wifi may be different. Channels 12-14 are not allowed in the U.S., but are allowed in other countries. The stock AT&T motorola builds do not support these channels.

HSPA+ is not classified as 4g because it is not a real advance in this type of tech same as WiMax. just to be clear, not judging or anything like that. i.e. ntt docomo tested 100.00 mbps years ago and it was still 3g.

I fail to see how your comment was constructive, either way, I have serious doubts his carrier will have the technology to broadcast HSPA+.
To the OP, as far as ROMs and stuff go, yes, they will work. How much network functionality you get really just depends. I'm pretty certain youll at least retain Call/SMS capability.
I now own both an Atrix 4G and Atrix... now I just want clarify a few things for you based on two stock devices.
The Atrix 4G is a very crippled, and restricted version of the Atrix. In fact, the Atrix is more 4G than the Atrix 4G if you want to play to ATT's marketing crud.
Why? The bands it supports. The Atrix will support 3G(UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA/HSPA+ are all forms of 3G and HSPA+ is not 4G as AT&T call it. In the UK, THREE have HSPA+ that runs at 42mbps, but they don't call it 4G!) on 850/900/1900/2100 where as the Atrix 4G only supports these on 850/1900/2100
One advantage the Atrix 4G has over the Atrix is that you don't need to apply a ram fix when flashing roms (however it looks as if people have started to incorporate this into their roms anyway).
I'll be doing a comparison video at some point to explain this in more detail. Check this link here for some rough differences: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3709&idPhone2=3708
I haven't investigated however if flashing a Atrix 4G Baseband/Radio to an Atrix will have any detrimental effect, other than maybe the issue you get with a Atrix 4G where if you flash an Atrix baseband/radio to an Atrix 4G your 3G signal bar reads 0 all the time.
Understood thanx. The problem is in the sms function. There will be no Turkish characters when i flash US roms am i right? How can i get ICS roms with TR caharacter support or a multilanguage support? And can you advise me a rom and kernel which is superior in performance (especially gaming) and ICS based?I hope 3G will work proper with US roms&kernels

Any aussies on XT905 and Optus 4G?

Any Aussies here with a Telstra XT905 but on Optus and with 4G active?
I'm finding with 4G active I get intermittent signal dropouts - it will go from even 5 bars to none then re-connect shortly. This is intermittent and random, I don't know how often its really happening unless I just happen to see it when I've got the screen on. I started noticing it as it seems to drop voice calls when it happens, normally doesn't kick in on a voice call until >5 minutes.
If I turn off 4G all is fine.
I tried freezing modem fast dormancy and modem stats service as it seemed to be triggering lots of wakelocks, but that didn't affect it.
I'm feeling dumb now signing up for another year and enabling 4G, could have kept trucking on my cheaper non 4G plan lol (and be coming out of contract around now!).
Note I'm on Optus, i have no idea if this happens if I am Telstra. The problem is too intermittent for me to pop in a temporary Telstra SIM and notice it (as I don't want my 'real' number to be offline for more than a short duration). I'm hoping it is indeed carrier related (i.e. so problem is fixed if I go back to Telstra, as opposed to hardware issue). Its intermittent enough so that its impossible to demonstrate in a store, and further I've unlocked/rooted so there goes my warranty anyway!
I'm the only one? Even if you don't have any issues w/ Optus 4G pls let me know so I can distinguish between a phone issue and a general Optus 4G compatibility issue.
3G appears rock solid, switched back to it (battery life FTW) and no issues again.

Not sure if I agree. We've all purchased this "niche" phone so it has a market, but Motorola phones are generally not anywhere near as popular as say SG3 or the like.
Personally I've always used Moto phones since I had the Moto Z6, what a beast! Best sound on a phone ever (ok may of that generation!).
A lot of ppl got put off by the allegedly crappy screen and price.

Maybe there are issues with LTE in your area? If you didn't change anything on the phone I would reboot it just to be sure but it's probably a coverage issue.
I'm gonna talk to Rogers today, cause I should have LTE around my area.

HSPA+ is H+, not 4G. Test your connection speed if you're unsure, anything over 10mbps (especially for upload) is most likely LTE. I get around 24-36mbps up here in Canada.
Edit: Ah, that might be different for each carrier then. I definitely get H+ when I am on HSPA+.
8mb/s. On download, I don't believe those are LTE speeds, and if they are they're pass poor.
Also, never seen H+ on my GS4, so I think 4G is HSPA+.

On the AT&T version, when on LTE, there is a small print "LTE" under the 4G symbol. The term 4G has been abused so much, God knows what it means on any given device.

I'm in Chatham Ontario.
Between Windsor and London
I think it might be a radio issue with the stock ROM. It was the same on the S2 Skyrocket, some radios worked better than others. The Radio I had on my S2 when I switched over to the S4 showed LTE in my area constantly. Previous radios on that phone were hit and miss...some a lot better than others. I guess we will have to wait until the BootLoader is unlocked (for AT&T S4s) and other basebands (radios) are released until we can test and see which one works better in each area.
My S4 has a pretty good connection now, but it too shows 4G where it use to show LTE. Like I said, some radios do better than others when handling LTE connections.
So apparently the representative lied to me and said that I would have LTE, but my region doesn't support it. That's awesome : /. Thought it doesn't explain why I had it for a brief period. Maybe it came from a tower with LTE. Weird.
Well, This things going back unless a representative can give me a decent deal : /

Are you positive that your area doesn't have LTE? Just because the phone is capable of having LTE doesn't mean you are guaranteed an LTE signal. You have to be within the LTE broadcast area and, your phone's modem (radio) has to pick up that LTE signal. Like I said before, the phones radio has a lot to do with it. Some just handle LTE connection (and all connections) better than others. Radios are flashable, but the bootloader has to be unlocked, with custom recovery installed and different versions of the radio have to be available before Devs can make them flashable. Some will do better than others. It's just a matter of trying them when they are available.
