IMO, it would count towards your data usage so it should cost if not on unlimited plan.

Even with the unlimited plans, T-mobile requires the tethering feature to be added. As was stated before, it's free until they catch it.

Tethering is extra on top of unlimited data.
Change your user agent on your computer to android, ie mobile, or iphone,etc etc and you are good to go.
I have not been caught yet. I did receive a txt before I changed user agent though.

I been using tethering on my phone since day one and I have never gotten charged for it. I use it intensively. It will use data though. You gotta watch out for the 5gb cap.

Wireless tethering is included with the [MyTouch 4G] phone, per 2 T-Mobile reps, one who checked in to it after I told her what I had heard from the first. I asked her to annotate my record (case, ticket) Just In Case. 2 different reps said that tethering was not included, and was an extra cost. I didn't press them as I was calling about something unrelated.
I have tethered without charge and without problems before and after rooting/installing CM7. I don't tether much, but never hesitate when it is handy. My total usage is well under 5GB/month, FWIW.

They are right, but it's just like GM cars come included with ONstar but it'll cost you. There is no switch or button they can push to allow the tethering to continue after the message comes up unless you have the feature added. You can ask for supervisor, supervisor's supervisor, etc. but it's an automatic system programming. Before last December there was no tethering feature but it was also against the terms & conditions of T-mobile to tether and still is in there but now they have the feature.
Some people have found changing the user agent ID as a solution, don't know but using it regularly can definitely lead to the message and there's no options after that but to quit tethering or purchase the feature.

I've been tethering for the past 2 weeks now because I just moved into a new place and haven't been able to switch my internet over just yet. I haven't seen any changes in my bill, nor recieved any text messages from T-Mobile regarding tethering charges. I'm using CM7 and no other tethering apps. I haven't changed any user agents except on my phone's browser, and I changed it from Android to desktop. So far I've used 33,152.81 Mb (a lot of netflix streaming) according to the T-Mobile website. Although I've been throttled, it's not too bad because I'm in a 4G area and still getting around 2 Mbps.

if you are seeing 2Mb download speed you are not throttled. Throttled speeds are around 56k, or about the same as EDGE.

Well I recieved a text message from T-Mobile that I have been, and I usually get around 4-6 Mb at my new place.

they haven't tethered you yet then. according to their TOS, tethered speeds are around EDGE.

Yup. I pretty sure it's because I'm using CM7 and not the official stock app. Either way, this is just my temporary setup. Once I get my internet up and running I won't be tethering too much. It's nice to know that I can though.

Tethering has been enabled on my phone since I got it, without it even being rooted it has the wifi hotspot option, and I don't remember there being an extra charge on my bill for it...and yes it works fine.

I don't know where some folks are getting there info. T-mobile does not charge for tethering. I tether every day on my Mytouch 4g and never been charged for tethering. Ive been doing this since Jan.

Where do I find this TOS? Because like I mentioned before, I also use my tether everyday, and for hours! I dont get charged any tether fees. My data usage does go down hill though.

Letter of warning from sprint concerning roaming.

Gosh, got a letter of warning from sprint yesterday. For a couple of months I'd been using the .00001 hack to use Verizon's network. A couple if weeks ago I switched to a normal prl.
They sent me a letter explaing that if ididnt trim back my data roaming, they would shut off my phone. Having done a cost comparison, I can't afford to switch companies. I'm on a sprint employees plan that was linked to sero. Plus the other folks don't allow unlimited data anymore.
Just wanted to give a caution to those of us using the prl hack, they are watching. Thankfully I'd made the switch before I even got the letter and now have roaming blocked with cyanomod v7

You are lucky that you only received a warning. There are plenty of reports here from people that were not given a choice to terminate service with Sprint. They most defiantly keep a lookout for excessive roaming.

I wonder if it matters on location or how you use their data. I used to do a lot of roaming and never got a letter like that.

I actually asked a Sprint rep if i could force my phone to roam permanently on Verizon and what the repercussions were. She asked me kinda stunned, why would you want to do that? I told her so i could get the data speeds that sprint can't provide. She told me that they would catch it immediately because many, many people are doing that.

I personally dont get above 100kbps down or up on sprint, even with full bars. When roaming on Verizon, I can easily get 2mbps down, even with 1 bar.

I've been using the 0001 PRL and my speeds have improved a decent bit. I seem to be able to buffer Netflix and play an online game like Galcon with less noticeable lag.
The sad thing is, right when I got the EVO 4G, within the first few months, Sprint's 3G speeds easily beat Verizon's. Verizon's speeds are good, but not great, but Sprint's network has been so congested that it merely offers mediocre speeds for me now.
I also don't get voice signal with Sprint at my new place, whereas the Verizon prl gives me signal.
I'll just switch back to a Sprint PRL as soon as I get a warning letter.

I switched back because I didn't see a noticeable speed difference in my area.

Well Sprint gonna release EVDO REV B which will give us EVO users 5mb down and 1mb up on 3G but for the EVO 3D user and epic 4G touch will get 14mb down and 10mb up on 3G

Yep same here. I have a constantly open ticket at Sprint for their poor data. I told them this when asking if i could roam permanently. I told them that roaming on any other network was faster then Sprint.

MetroPCS will allow you to use some CDMA handsets from other providers, yes. But you don't get data; you'll have to figure out how to do that yourself. I know plenty of folks who put OG Droids and EVOs on Ghettro, though I don't know why... 1xRTT is pretty miserable, way too slow for a real smartphone... and their LTE isn't compatible with Verizon LTE handsets afaik.

It's the same principle, each carrier runs their network on different frequencies, except most who use the same technology also use the same texting/phone frequencies.
If Metro had the same 3G bands as Verizon, a Verizon phone would work fine.

MetroPCS doesn't have EV-DO at all.

Yes they do. if you are using their latest .prl (3025) and your phone is 3G capable, you will get 3G in the rare places where it is available. i live in nyc and did not get 3g on metro unless i went to Brooklyn . i used the speedtest app and it got 300ish kbps on an evdo network. not bad speed for metropcs, but very slow compared to what im using now.

There are two stores around me that do it. $50 to get your phone on there network. Only one of them does the data. Not sure how much they charge. But it's not officially done by metro. It's individuals who work in the store and the money goes to them.

They are an MVNO of T-Mobile. To be honest, I would just go with T-Mobile's monthly 4G plans instead of Simple but to each his own. Some people swear by them.

What's double data. I typically use around 150 gb a month. That's why I like unlimited.

I met a guy recently on Simple Mobile and he seemed happy, I'm thinking of switching soon. I mean, unlimited 3G data, text and talk for $40 a month including international texting? Considering my phone only does 3G (Vibrant) anyways...
But, I also don't use that much data.

They have a promo where if you order 2GB for 30$ you automatically get 4GB and, pay for 5GB ($50) get 10GB, and so on....
ALSO: To anyone thinking of Simple mobile go with the higher priced option. The 40$ dollar option doesn't give you access to 4G speeds (T-Mobile's HSPA+ in this case) even if your phone is only 3G capable you will see a speed boost.

Wait for Journal or go with ATT

So with VZ about to double data(again!), I have been thinking of getting a GNex with 5GB(or 10 since double), so if the Journal comes, Id have a great plan. Should I do that or get the ATT and get the 5GB plan? I hate that the only messaging option is 20$, and employee discounts do not help.

One thing i learnt over the last decade using cell phone, gsm phone always resells easier, faster and at higher price compares to cdma. That's why i never go the verizon route. And do u really need over 5gb data? Sure 10 is great but unless u carry 3 battery around all the time and not using wifi at home, there is no way u can burn through 5gb data per month .

oh better believe some people burn through tons of gigs per month. If you stream netflix videos, tether your phone as a hotspot, etc. Then it is possible.

To op, like the above poster said gsm has better resale value. If signal quality isnt a issue att would be the better choice. Besides there bias with iphone, ive been a happy customer since 08.
If you want unlimited data, you can check if the iphone 2g trick still works.

Im in NYC, so people are telling me not to get ATT.
I may blow throw the Limit, im on TMO never came close to the soft cap, but I am installing an Ipad in my car and would like to stream movies/videos w/e thru the note.
I want the 10 just because its a GOOD deal, would kick myself if I get the ATT, dont pick up a VZ phone with the double data, then the note comes out on VZ and i coulda had double the data!
I think I will pre-order and test for 30 days. If VZ had this deal before, theny may have again!

Does the Verizon loophole still work if you get the 4g hotspot, they give you unlimited data?

No they closed the loop and now going back and auditing those that pulled the hotspot after it gave them unlimited.

I have 450 min and lowest ATT data plan an have unlimited data using Sprints MiFi at $35mo. Don't dis Sprints Wimax. Here in Chicago its consistently faster than ATT's Hspa+, and downloads big sites faster than LTE devices at ATT or Verizon.

The Verizon version of the Note, should it come out(I think it will, hence the question/anxiety).

Most important is whether at&t works ok in your area. If it's tolerable with its overall coverage and data speeds, I'd say go for the at&t Note.
Don't be surprised if the Journal for VZW doesn't come out until like this summer at the earliest.
I'm basing this off the 9 month span it took the Thunderbolt to come out after the EVO was originally released for Sprint.
Problem is both at&t and VZW fell into the bad habit of taking forever to release phones. Culprits being long iPhone exclusivity for at&t....and OG Droid being a hit for VZW.

I believe so.

if youre worried about data usage, just wait for the vzw version. ATT only offers you 3gb/mo + $10 per gb beyond that. I personally dont think the note is worth jumping ship over, especially since the journal will come out. It will have LTE as well.

How long will this double data promo last?

Since T-Mo is carrying the Nexus 4...no tethering without the proper plan?

Right now I have no problem tethering off my Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile with an unlimited plan, whether on my tablet, laptop, or desktop. The Nexus 4 looks pretty nice, but my concern - since T-Mobile is also carrying it, does that mean it'll have the capability to block tethering without the proper plan, even using the Play unlocked version? Does the T-Mobile one even have anything confirmed other than a higher price? Apparently 42Mbps speeds are confirmed on the Play version through the Google press release and the Play Store specs are wrong.
I know its all speculation at this point since nobody has the phone, but that'd be a huge factor as to whether I sell my Galaxy Nexus now and go back to my HTC G2 until I get the Nexus 4 (while I can still get a decent amount for it), or just get my high-performance fix with the Nexus 10 (which I'd be planning to get regardless after selling my Toshiba Thrive).

If you can root it, you can tether w/o being charged a fee. True story.

If you buy it from T-Mobile, they will have the IMEI and can track it. Better get it from the PlayStore.

Except I've had issues tethering with a rooted/ROM'd G2 occasionally, and have had friends having issues with tethering on rooted devices, so I can't say that's entirely true.

But if T-Mobile ends up carrying the same unlocked version (just upcharging for whatever reason), then wouldn't they be able to track the IMEI or whatever of the unlocked version too?

I can say it's entirely true. No problems tethering with root on ATT or VZW with my Captivate, Atrix or Gnex using either WiFi Tether free app or built in AP via AOKP or CM for 3+ years in at least 2 states. So if you are having problems, you are doing it wrong.

T-Mobile only knows the imei of the phones they sell. They can't and don't have access (unless it's currently connected to their network) of any other imei.

How exactly can you root "wrong" like you're saying? Fact is, I've gotten the "get a hotspot plan" pages when tethering to my laptop/desktop numerous times while I had my G2, running both CM7 and CM9. Maybe T-Mobile is just more stringent about sniffing out tethering?

No one said you were rooting wrong, they said if you're having tethering issues then you're tethering wrong. But it just depends on the current tower you're on as well as traffic at the time, as well as luck.

Exactly. So while tethering is possible on rooted devices, its not guaranteed to work 100% of the time, which is what I'm trying to get at.

No, no. My VZW LTE tethered from my Gnex is more reliable than my Charter cable internet, in fact I use it as a backup when Charter goes out. (which is a few time a month.) If you don't have data it is because of your carrier. And when I said doing it wrong I meant tethering not rooting. There are many many threads on how to properly tether. When done properly tethering works 100% of the time, not having data to tether is a different issue altogether.

It seems to be pretty well established that T-Mobile is packet-sniffing to detect unauthorized tethering. It appears that they detect the User Agent string if you are using Internet Explorer or Chrome (but apparently not Firefox, I imagine because Android Firefox is able to pretend to be the desktop version with one tap). Changing the User Agent string for your browser or using a VPN tunnel circumvents the detection, and non-browser access (SSH, SMTP, etc.) is not checked, either. All that's independent of whether you are rooted or not.

just install a user agent add on or extention on your laptop. Firefox and chrome both have them, i set mine to nexus 7 user agent and the tether blocking pages go away for good.

it works with out root or any app im using it right now on my comp with my nexus 4 free i have tmobile truly unlimited plan

IMEIs are assigned in blocks. Even if they don't have access to the info from the manufacturer, (they almost certainly do), they can still figure it out. If, for example, they've sold Nexus 4s with IMEIs 1001 and 1003, and you log onto their network with 1002, they can draw a pretty solid conclusion.
The hard part is figuring out if you're tethering or not, which requires invasive packet sniffing if the phone itself doesn't report tethering (that's how they track tethering with branded devices). I don't believe, based on my quick research, that T-Mo is sniffing everyone's packets. Which means they probably aren't watching you unless you are streaming 20GB a month. They are tracking user agents on branded phones, it seems.
