End to unlimited data with Verizon. - Networking

This is bad news for everyone as this will likely be the case with T-Mobile when AT&T completes the aquisition. I'm afraid Sprint will be next. No more Pandora Radio, navigation or other worry free data consumption. I hope there will be a strong consumer backlash. Almost no competition in the market now.

This really does suck!

What's the point of 4g. Everyone will be looking for Starbucks with WiFi. Now I have no choice but to stay with Sprint and lately I have not been happy with the slower data.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Whats going to happen is they are going to start charging people like $1000, these people will not pay and swap carriers. I've seen people blindsided with crazy high fees on limited data plans before.
BTW I refuse to put a plan on my tablet. Prices are crazy. I just do everything off wifi including caching GPS infomation.

Despite what they tell you and the corporate lingo in their statements (ie "We are committed to providing world class service to our customers, blah blah blah") the shareholders are all they care about. Consumers have no power in a market with no competition.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Not buying has a lot of power. Unfortunately majority of business users will not care. Although SB may fight if they get a crazy high bill. We did it once when someone racked up a huge bill surfing on his phone.

This will force everyone to use WiFi rather than their wireless carrier...

Glad I'm on sprint! But come on now, how greedy can you get?!?!?!? Companies find a way to make money and just run with it huh? This is definatly a bad idea!

I guess they want to protect their bandwidth without having to build out their network. Money invested in the network = smaller executive bonuses.

All I can say is "Highway Robbery" with those prices. I'm glad I'm in a contract, and switched when I did.

Why are they even enabling Netflix/Skype then when GB is actually released... This is a total Sham-wow

Sprint Marketing says otherwise......They arent going tier'd anytime soon...They may make you pay for it though (10 dollar premium data charge!)

How nice of them to include personal email at no extra charge. Oh thank you Verizon overlords! I will sing your praises!

i feel sorry for new subscribers. All this new media and cloud services and now capped data. terrible

Yeah our family will be forced to stay with Sprint now and continue renewing for unlimited data. The choices that a competitive market should provide are gone. Please FCC, do not approve the AT&T / T-Mobile merger.

If people already didn't try to use mainly wifi, they are now.

I feel for you guys. I lucked out with my unlimited data with alltel grandfathered to at&t.

I can't believe they would do that!

Behold the power of greed... though just to buck the system I may try to hook up an old 56k modem to my Eris (what CAN'T this little phone do!) and use that for my data needs... bulky, excessive, and completely insane... but if I can give the finger to the man I'll gladly go to radio shack for some parts!

Well don't know the American system but here in BE we always have been capped.
And the prices as it stands here are more insane.
We are free to use our provider and can switch anytime we wan't with any phone since we use SIM cards but for example a normal phone user can easily spend 30€or 42$ for a contract with allot of calling included but with only 250mb - 500mb traffic allowed.
You really need to do heavy research for Smartphone users as to who is the cheapest and gives the most.

From what I understand it's just a glitch. Why would they remove the 4G phones only and not the 3G phones? If anything it would be the other way around.
If thats the case they shouldn't be able to charge us for the new 3G 10.00 until contract expire or upgrade renew.
If they try it will be breach of contract adding additional cost thus many will be waving bye bye without paying early termination fee.

It does indeed show up on analyze my plan. However, it's unclear if that's showing the old information or new. My statement cuts in a few days, and by the 19th of the month, the new bill is usually viewable. I'll report back.
The $10 fee still shows up for me if I analyze my plan. They must have just taken it off the front account page so it doesnt slap us in the face everytime we go to pay our bills lol

Someone probably commented out a line or two of code..
Being a sprint employee, i can assure you guys that the 10.00 "Premium data(this is the real name for it") feature is not going anywhere. 4g or not, it is here to stay. if you upgrade or swap to a phone that requires a data plan, its game over. The only people that it is waived for are large corporate accounts. individual liable customers (that's you guys) will have to pay it. It is either this, or cap your data...
Yup it appears the way but they said that all smarphones were going to lay for it so probably that's y, I ma wait another 10 days to see my new bill and see what's up

Will Sprint EVER come with a Premium Android phone or eventually drop the 4G cost?
That $10 fee is just going to become standard. If it hasn't already. For all 3G phones as well. 'Premiuim data / unlimited data' fee. You can sleep easy now ... or then.

Go to any other major provider and I guarentee you will pay more then $10 for their plan + data.
Be happy Sprint isn't att.
I am. Completely. I even came from a Sero plan to the new Sero Premium. It's not the service or the fees, indirectly, that I'm staying for, but the apps that Android has. I could easily switch to the HTC Arrive but I LOVE Google Nav. The same can be said about the Palm Pre 3.
Just sign up for the credit union discount depending on your plan it will nearly or totally offset the $10.

If it applies to smartphone users, and you seriously use more than 10gb/mo:
A) Verizon has no plan for you.
B) you are less than 1/10 of 1% of Sprint's data consumers and they will NOT miss you.
What will be the prices and limits for Verizon's tiered plan.

When I think of Sprint, the first thought that comes to mind is CEO Dan Hesse standing on a pier talking about being truly unlimited. I’m sure that he really does like the idea of being truly unlimited… but only when phones are concerned. You see, Sprint is reportedly going to take a different stance when it comes to data connection cards and embedded devices, such as tablets and netbooks.

Tiered plans not so bad
My current phone data plan costs $80 a month for unlimited, and I only use a couple hundred megs a month at most. If I could drop that by almost $50 as a result of my being a light user, I'd love it.
I forgot where I saw an article about it, maybe it was for AT&T/iPhone, but the notion of variable rate based on your use seems like a good idea to me. Start out at a base (that $35/mo for 3gb isn't too bad) that notches up when you cross a line, and becomes more bulk friendly as you go, and every month it resets to the base. If I went really heavy on data usage for a month, my bill would be at that $80 unlimited point, but if I went sparingly I'd only get charged $35 for under 3gb, or maybe $55 for 8gb before hitting the 'unlimited' mark at say 10gb.
My phone is a tool, a convenience to make my life better in some minor form. It does not make me who I am as a person, and it would be nice to have that reflected in my wallet as a result.
Yes this only goes for non-phone devices. Only affects things like tablets, usb modems, etc. The article 2 posts above clarifies and even shows a graph for detail.
Note that the 450 plan will get 300 bonus minutes, so it is essentially 750 minutes, plus unlimited data for your phone.
EDIT: You get 300 bonus minutes if you get a tab, usb modem, etc. and one of the new tiered data plans.
2nd EDIT: It seems it would be cheaper and do it legit and only pay $30/month on Sprint's mobile hotspot for your phone (and get UNLIMITED DATA that way) instead of paying $34.99 for even the 3GB plan, since these new plans for the non-phone devices requires you to sign up for a phone plan anyways.

New AT&T Data Plans

Probably still not enough for the most of you lol

More like getting shafted into eating the cost, or not having a phone. AT&T and Verizon charging ridiculous rates for data, T-Mobile compressing all of your images, Sprint's service being utterly horrible, MetroPCS with terrible phone choices and no 3G service in my area, and other issues. MVNOs either run on Sprint and suffer signal issues and slow data speeds, or run on AT&T and get small data caps (hi H2O wireless) or get throttled to 500kbps (Red Pocket, AT&T GoPhone).
In terms of speed and price, T-Mobile is still good, but why bother browsing if every web page looks like 1997 vomited all over it? The only thing missing is Geocities and an annoying midi file looping in the background. I don't understand how they think they're going to get away with severe image compression when 720x1280 is the new Android flagship standard resolution.

Okay, some fine print time.
Fine Print #1
Those who wish to stay with their current setup of 4GB of double data are able to do so. You will be allowed to upgrade with it, keep it, etc. So if the shared plan is not financially beneficial to you, don't sweat it.
Fine Print #2
Yes, those with unlimited will lose it. ONLY WHEN THEY UPGRADE. So if you never upgrade, you don't lose it for the foreseeable future. Do what I've been doing for years. Buy your phones off craigslist. Meet the seller at a Verizon, let a rep check the ESN and make sure you're not getting scammed with a stolen phone, and call it a day. I picked up my Nexus for $200 on Craigslist, the same cost it sells for at Verizon WITH CONTRACT. This will enable you to keep your unlimited.
The prices on this benefit a lot of people. Consider this:
2 line family plan, both smartphones
99.99 for 700 minutes & unlimited texting
30 for 2GB
30 for 2GB
=$160 a month
Under new plan:
$70 for unlimited talk and text, 4GB of data shared, now with free tethering
40 for 1 phone
40 for other phone
= $150 a month. $10 savings, same GB overall, now unlimited minutes.
I'm not saying this plan is perfect, or that it works for everyone. But the nice part is, if you don't want it, you're not being forced into it. It's an option that's available, and if it benefits you (and it truly does benefit a lot of people. Not everyone, but a lot) then more power to you.
I'll do glad that I am not on Verizon anymore because they are too expensive for their own good.
Sent from my XT862 using XDA
The real problem with them is that the market is not competitive. Being the biggest network means people will pay whatever ridiculous price they ask without really looking at their other options. I think Straight Talk should offer a $45/month unlimited everything, bring your own device program on Verizon like they do on AT&T and T-Mobile
Verizon smartphone users already **** bricks when they hear how I pay $45/month, don't have a contract, have unlimited everything, and have virtually identical coverage.

They do; Straight Talk re-sells service on all 4 carriers, but you can't bring your own phone for Verizon or Sprint because they won't activate phones that aren't branded by them (even if it's a phone from their own network, it has to be used only directly on their network). There are other limitations like having to reprogram the phone, but the main issue is getting them to activate it, which they don't do.
