So, I am considering buying Samsung Omnia 7 on a 2-year contract with T-Mobile on their £15/month tariff. I consider it a very good deal.
Beforehand, I've got some questions and I would like those that have recently bought the Omnia 7 / T-Mobile combo, to help me clear some things out...
A. The £15,xx tariff comes with an inclusive bolt-on, and guess what? I'll take the data allowance. On paper, that bolt-on offers 500 MB of data. But I've heard that those having a contract directly with T-Mobile (that will be my case) are not charge for excessive data till the fair usage policy limit, which is 3000 MB? Is that true? (I'm not talking about the £25+ tariffs that recently were boosted to include unlimited data.)
B. Is the T-Mobile Omnia SIM-locked to T-Mobile network? Has anyone tried inserting other network's SIM? If it is locked is there a free way of SIM-unlocking?? Orange devices are sim-unlocked most of the time. But what about T-Mobile ones?
C. Are all the Omnias plagued with the bad boot-loader??? Ok, so I press the 3-button combo to get into download mode... and what will I see if I am good to go or in the undesired situation of blocked boot-loader?
D. So let's assume I've got a blocked boot-loader. I make USB jig to force download mode, then connect to the pc, it gets recognised, I install the drivers... Is the official patch released by Samsung in May any good? Or should I proceed with flashing a new boot-loader following xdamir's handy guide?
E. What firmware / OS version do a recently bought retail Omnia 7 come with?? Is that pre-NoDo 7.0.7004/8??? Or has T-Mobile updated their devices to a No-Do version like 7.0.0.7390/2??? In case of a NoDo version, is downgrading to a pre-NoDo doable? Just flashing a generic Rom? (no hardspl stuff from the 6.x era?). As you understand I want to jailbreak. What should I avoid so as not get an update (OTA or via Zune)
E. De-branding is only possible with flashing an unbranded retail Rom, right? Is T-Mobile branding evident only on the boot screen logo and search engine? Are there any other useless T-mobile rubbish? And how do you remove branding? You just flash a generic retail rom? Or is there any hack?
F. So we have 4 flashable filetypes. Correct me if wrong...
- Phone: .bin (firmware, radio)???
- Eboot: .eb0 (boot-loader)
- PDA: .nb0 (actual OS version)???
- CSC: .csc (network specific settings, branding)
Am I correct??? When flashing do I need to flash all these 4 at once?? Can I skip flashing the .csc to have a generic rom? Can I just flash .eb0 to update the boot-loader? Can I combine different .bin .nb0 and so on (from different releases or retail roms)
G. Let's say that i have chevron unlocked the phone. Can I upgrade to No-Do and keep unlock? I'm not interested in the Mango beta for the time being.
H. I have already registered with AppHub (as a student) and I 'm getting my 1st app compiled so that I can be verified as a developer and subsequently get my phone officially unlocked. Will the fact that I will have been chevron unlocked prior to this, create any problem?? If i get developer unlocked, is it any different that chevron unlocked?? Does chevron offer any more capabilities. Or I should just stick to developer unlock?
For those brave having read the whole of my post, I would really appreciate your answers you Omnia masters
B. Yes, it is locked to T-Mobile.
That's not good. I've heard numerous Omnias from Orange that come unlocked.
I'll answer what I can.

I haven't tried with this phone but every device i've had from Orange has been locked to that network.
C. Are all the Omnias plagued with the bad boot-loader??? Ok, so I press the 3-button combo to get into download mode... and what will I see if I am good to go or in the undesired situation of blocked boot-loader?
No they are not. I had the bad bootloader (4.10.1.9). People were able to update to 7392 regardless.

I could not enter download mode on mine with the button press combo. However when i updated to 7392 from 7390, my bootloader stayed at 4.10.1.9 but i can now enter download mode with the button press combo.
Previous to this i had used a resistor jig and applied the Samsung patch. However in hindsight i don't think i needed to. You will be fine.

After 7392 update i'm still on JJ6 firmware.

As far as T-Mobile Data allowance is concerned I found the following on their site...
''... If you join T-Mobile before 30 September 2011 and select a 24-month price plan of £25 a month or more, the good news is that there's no fair use policy. Remember that you can only use internet on your phone in the UK and you can't use your phone as a modem (tethering) or use internet on your phone for peer-to-peer file sharing or making internet phone calls...''
Comment: do they block voip packages????
''... If you're choosing any other pay monthly plan (<£25), please see the fair use policy below.
However much you use the internet, you'll never get charged extra
We're the only operator to offer you a fixed price for browsing and emailing on your phone with no limits and no extra charges. Use 3G for getting online on your phone when you're out and about. Never pay more than your monthly fixed price. You can always browse and email with no limits.
Is there an allowance?
You can browse and email as much as you want. There is a 500MB allowance for streaming videos and uploading and downloading files. If you hit this limit during the month, you won't be able to do this stuff again until the next month.
For the best internet on your phone, connect to your home WiFi, so you won't even touch your 500MB allowance.
What about using apps?
Some apps use a normal internet connection, so they will work just like your browsing and email allowance. But there are some apps that use streaming connections, so these will fall into the 500MB allowance...''
So their new fair usage policy discerns between ''normal'' data and ''streaming'' data''. (packet inspection??) Web browsing and email sync fall into normal data category that is unlimited and does not count towards your 500MB download data allowance
When downloading a file off the internet (let's say an app off the MarketPlace), or streaming a movie, you are consuming data from a 500 MB data ''pool''. If you exceed tgis limit, you cannot further download/stream, but you can still continue to have data access for http/browsing data. apps like netflix, vevo, youtube fall into that download data category, I assume.
One question arises, what happens with voip data packages (if there are any voip apps for wp7 for the time being, anyway there is a google voice client I recon)

Ok so i got charged close to $700 last month...ooooooooouch!!! I use a cingular 8525 unlocked to use softbanks service. I went to the store and they told me there is no way i can get unlimited data without going through their stupid yahoo! browser. If i use anything outside of s! mail and yahoo! browser (like explorer) i will be charged outside of the ulimited data plan they "say" they offer.
I don't thnk this girl knows what she is talking about because the X01HT is sold in japan so that would also apply to them too...i heard there is some like $100/month plan that lets u use anykind of browser and all internet. Does anyone have more information on this. thank you kindly.
You are in the united states and with att?
I'm on the media net unlimited plan and I use my phone for all kinds of stuff. You can get on the pda unlimited plan and use your phone for whatever without extra charges.
It's not a phone hardware issue, it's a software issue.
Probably on the Softbank X01HT they pre-installed a Y! browser and mail software that uses their specific "unlimited" server.
You could try to get that browser and mail software by installing the extended ROM for the softbank X01HT
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_ExtendedRoms
scroll down until you find the one for Softbank.
DONT ask me how to install it. I did enough as it is to help you.
thank you much for your input...yea i am in japan not us
i am currently using blacks cooked rom so i know enough about installing that stuff...it would suck to have to downgrade though lol.
go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297687&highlight=softbank
Install the stuff and make sure the access point is: open.softbank.ne.jp
Once you click WIFIwake.exe in the windows directory, it should add the password for you in the softbank settings.
THIS SHOULD GIVE YOU ACCESS TO UNLIMITED INTERNET PACKETS for a maximum charge of about 10,000 a month (unless I am mistaken). - Seems to work for me anyways, although I don't think I have ever used a whole lot. It was more of an insurance thing for me to ensure I never got massive phone bills.
One thing though: you should make sure you are signed up to the unlimited plan. Just go to a softbank store and tell them you want "TSUKAI HODAI Interneto accessu" for your x01ht
Finally, does anybody know if this works if I use my softbank as modem to connect to my laptop? In theory it should -- I am just too chicken to try it.
After upgrading my original SX66 to WM6, I somehow lost my ability to connect to the internet. I've checked and rechecked the settings, so AT&T thinks that something got corrupted in the upgrade.
I found a decent price for a 2nd SX66 on Ebay, so I'd like to upgrade the ROM on that. Before doing so, I want to achieve 2 things:
-- Back up the original WM203SE ROM from the new device, in case I need to reload it later.
-- Back up the original AT&T/Cingular Internet settings, in case they get wiped out in the upgrade (which will probably happen).
How can I go about doing these before the upgrade? What utilities/programs should I look for?
Also, which ROM is currently being recommended for a typical user, who uses a PDA for personal use (no business, tethering, or developing)? I plan on getting the PDA Personal data plan from AT&T, since I get a discount with my company.
Edit: This may sound like a crazy question, but I'm not as technically adept as the majority of you... Would any of the above matter if the device is already unlocked?
Thanks everyone,
Debbie
I read about this somewhere, but i can't find the thread.
I know that normal T Mobile firmware requires you to connect to the web through T Mobile Web n Talk.
Well my firmware is now flash to 1.66 WWE and my phone is now unlocked.
I bought a O2 sim and a Vodaphone sim with 3GB and 1 GB prepaid data credit.
Whenever i open a browser app or go to setting> wireless controls > data connections i get this error message:
Cannot Connect
Dialed:
Cannot connect for unknown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap settings and change them if needed, tap settings. If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufacture's documentation and try again.
Settings
Anyone have any idea what is going on?
Hi
I have done the same to my phone and it works fine on O2.
I assume you did a hard reset after the debranding operation?
Once my phone came back to life after all the software changes, I went to Start/Settings/All Settings/Connections/Connection Setup. Tapped the operator button, selected O2 from the drop down list and the phone connected and got all the necessary settings for GPRS an HSPDA connections. You will need to setup a WiFi connection first (I think). It might have downloaded the settings via SMS.
However, if you want to set your phone up manually, try this site first, filesaveas.com/gprs.html
(as a new user I am not allowed to post links yet, so you will have to add the url to the beginning of the link).
it is full of great advice for UK mobile Phone Operators WAP/GPRS/HSDPA/Email settings.
Cheers

um...
I'm not sure if i did the hard reset or not.
I'm going to test it on another Sim, as there is a chance that i don't actualy have usable credit on these Sim's so i'm going to try on a 3 Sim which gets 150mb free with 10 pound top up and is definitely for use in 3G phones.
My sims might be for wireless modem only, not too sure.
If that fails then i'll start look into other options.
How much of a problem would not hard resetting be?
Hopefully i did and that's not the problem.
Good to hear others have had success with T-mobile unlocked.
What is the worse case scenario? Re flashing and hard resetting?
Thanks.
if you were still on your tmo sim when you flashed to 1.66, then you probably still have the tmo settings for mobile data set as default. A hard reset is a good idea, and let the phone pick up the settings from the sim automatically, or at least make sure all trace of tmo is gone.
look here
settings - menu - all settings - connections - connections - manage existing connections to see a list of currently configured mobile networks
I use both a 3 SIM and a t-mobile and the HD2 will pick up their use, configure the settings and store them both at the same time and all automatically.
You shouldn't have the problem that you are experiencing. And its nothing to do with setting a WiFi connection.
Who unlocked the phone for you?

I haven't seen a phone SIM with prepaid data credits. If your phone is set for the right operaror, my guess is that you can't use this data allowance through your phone. You might try the router feature or connect a laptop to use the Web via your phone. If you're in the UK you might try T-Mobile and see if they still offer the PAYG SIM I have. 'Unlimited' data and texts are included in the month after you top up with £10. If you top up in April, data and UK SMSs would be free in May. Top up in May and browse and text for free in June. The £10 top up remains for calls. The offers change but this one suits me.
I use my laptop to connect to the Internet via my HD2 router. T-Mobile say this is against their rules. If they can tell the difference between phone and laptop use, perhaps you can use your data this way and so my earlier comment. They haven't said anything to me yet so I doubt it. I think you'd need to install the router; it's been removed by most operators.

Like I said I have the same SIM as the OP and of course it works in the phone. Its just a SIM with credit on it and I also use it in a mobile broadband USB modem through a 3 WiFi router without any problem.
Some of the prepaid 3 payg boxed deals are preloaded with bundles of data access thats what the OP must have, but there shouldn't be any problem with them connecting in a phone.

Well the O2 and T-Mobile sims that i suspected were modem only i used did not work, but the 3 payg sim i am now using is working perfectly.
3 offer 150mb free with every 10 pound credit topup.
The sims i got were not payg for phone use but modem use i believe.
In anycase it works now.
Where might i find any payg sims with preloaded data for mobile phone use?
Thanks.

I have a T-mobile PAYG SIM in my HD2. When I top up with £10, I get 'unlimited' data and UK text messages in the following month. The definition of unlimited varies but I've used over 1Gb without T-mobile becoming upset. It's not pre-loaded data but amounts to the same thing. You might need to check that the offer is still valid.
Hello Folks
Would love your feed back on following questions:
1) I came across a Unlock Galaxy Tab International Version and I was wondering if I would be able to use it with a pre paid sim card to get voice and text messaging on ATT network without modifying the stock rom on it?
2) If I choose to modify the rom, what would you recommend I use. I read the newbie guide but not sure it has reached a conclusion on what works best for both voice and data?
3) If I want to be able to access data and voice, what would be the "economical" plan prepaid or postpaid that you would recommend?
If you would like link other thread that might answer my questions, your help is much appreciated
Thanks in Advance
Regards,
i own a us tmobile tab which i was able to unlock, i went out and bought an att prepaid card just to test to see if the tab was actually locked, i started with the $25 prepaid and all i can tell you is that it all the funds disappeared in less than a day, i have no clue why, i was only able to test it with 2 phone calls and about 3 tries to go online. not sure if its worth it so you might have to go with a contract but then again not sure if you want that as att is a pain in the ass and giving customers with the tab a big hassle.
I don't see why not. You can use it on both Att and Tmobile.
Tmo has prepaid service including voice and sms for about $0.13 per minute. If you pay in advance $100 you will get $0.10 per minute good for whole year.
Att likes to charge you evry month.
Hello,
Just wanted to update my original post.
1) I picked up the international version of Samsung Galaxy Tab, and it seems to have capability to join either CDMA or GSM network, which I was pleasantly surprised to find as it gives options of network providers.
2) Popped in my prepaid sims from Puretalk USA which uses ATT network but Edge Network for prepaid calling and after going into settings and picking the network, I was able to make and receive calls on it
3) The phone came unlocked, but its not rooted so not sure if I should root it?
Please advice on point 3
Regards
Rooting is not necessary unless you want full control over your Tab.
You will be able to
- remove apps and services you are not using,
- install firewall,
- make full backup of your Tab
- upgrade to a better firmware yourself etc.
Basically, you will gain ability to do whaterver you want including bricking it.
It is a matter of choice and absulutely not mandatory. Typically stock software is not bad.
I am moving from android to WP7. I ordered a network unlocked samsung focus from ebay and it should be here any minute Really excited. But need some advice on what to do next:
1. I am guessing the phone might be loaded with a pre NoDo WP7. So how do I update it ? Would I lose my network unlock if I did update. I am in the US right now with ATnT but will move back to India soon where I would want to continue using the phone.
2. I have heard quite a bit about WP7 unlock to sideload apps. Some pointers on when best to do it (in the sense, before or after the update).
And anything else that I need to know to make my WP7 experience more enjoyable.
Thanks in advance.

Few starting points
1. All phone updates come via Zune. You need to install Zune, and version 4.8 has just been published today. You will also need this to deploy apps.
2. If your OS version is >7008 (settings, about, more), to sideload you will need to flash one of the ROMs here (AT&T UCJK2 recommended).
3. Once in 7004 or 7008, you need to unlock with Chevron. Sideloading works after that and you can update to NoDo
4. Formatting/flashing the phone doesn't affect SIM lock.
Locks are in NVRAM - you do not overwrite this section by flashing firmware or formatting. If the device is already SIM unlocked, flashing/updating/downgrading the ROM will keep the phone unlocked.
Why don't wait for official Mango update?
It should be less then a month away.
Personally I don't want to use different software in order to update to Mango.
I find it a bit risky.
I also got my phone from eBay(originally AT&T) and it works in Europe.
Thanks Guys
So I understand that once my phone is SIM locked, there is nothing that would lock it back to ATnT again ... Great inputs ... will get my hands on the Mango update ...
I was really worried about the SIM lock as if I lose that, the whole point of getting a new focus for 250 USD would be lost ..
Hey, got my Focus and it was on 7004 ... so managed to unlock it ...
Here is a strange situation... I am using an ATnT Prepaid plan USD50 (talk + text + web) ... although ATnT says I require a separate data plan for smartphones, GPRS works just fine on my LG Optimus One ...
However, with my Focus, it just refuses to work at all ... Any work around ?
Also, used Samsung tools to get the 3G toggle button but even after that, the icon still says 3G ... but still I get no data .. tried resetting apn etc etc but no dice ..
Thanks in advance

Connect to a WiFi or USB through Zune and look for "Network Profile" app (by Samsung) in Marketplace. Run it and change the profile to the carrier you use. That should do it.

Forgot to mention .. Did that also ..
Also, for some reason, thought ATnT rom might be causing the problem ... so flashed the Rogers ROM ...
Can you give me the list of steps and lemme see if I got it wrong... Thanks
At this point, I'd suggest put another SIM and switch in Network Profile to the new settings. Then, switch back to yours and run Network Profile again.
If neither work, you might have a problem with the hardware itself.
Hopefully not.
Something else you can try is: some people mess with the Diagnosis values and completely screw things up. There is a thread on Samsung codes in here somewhere, try finding a Factory Reset or at least a Hard reset.
Let us know how that goes.
Dont fret.. the SIM unlock would not be lost
Hey there..
I was in the exact same scenario bought a Samsung Focus from US using it here in India, here are a couple of tidbits (if you may) from me
SIM unlock would not be lost even if you update the firmware / restore from a back up
You cannot unlock for a version above 7004, if the OEM firmware is above 7004 you have to downgrade all the way to 7004 to unlock and upgrade to mango
Also, check on the revision of the Focus, it can be found on the panel near the IMEI behind your battery pack. revision 1.3 is slightly more hack friendly than rev 1.4
Regarding side-loading apps, you cannot side-load pirated apps. It's just wrong. The scene is very unlike iOS scene where the app files are available freely. But you can always, side load certain hacked apps like Registry Editor for phone,Samsung Tools etc. But this might change as Chevron Team might release an official unlock tool with the help of MSFT.
Having said all this, I'm an iOS convert. And absolutely fell in love with this beauty right from day 1.
Feel free to hit me up on the forum or leave a PM if you have any questions

What's the best place to get an unlock code? And is it worth updating to Mango right now or better to wait for the official release?

For code go on eBay, it's cheaper there.
For Mango, as long as you're fine with the fact that once the official update arrives you need to revert back and lose the progress, to update, it's good.
