OK, so now that I know about what's out there for my T-Mobile PPCPE (USA), I am now looking for some advise. I have a 'stock' T-Mobile (ROM 3.14.40 ENG), and I'd love to be able to take advantage of 'Wireless Modem' and possibly 'Always On GPRS'. T-Mobile is really slow with coming out with any updates at all, so I think I may be on my own. Could I get some honest advise?
1) Should I upgrade to a new ROM? If so, do I use the 2002 'special edition' ROM, or one of the various WM 2003 versions? I am very happy with my PPCPE as it is (except for the poor T-Mobile coverage), but I'd really like to be able to use it as a Wireless GPRS connection for my laptop.
2) Can someone point me to a 'ready-to-go' ROM, along with fail safe instructions on how to install it?
3) I have purchased a USB - to - IrDA port for my laptop in hopes of connecting using 'Wireless Modem', or 'wmodem.exe' (which ever I'm supposed to be using). Can someone explain more on how to actually initiate a connection using it? OK, so I'm jumping the gun a bit!
I'd also like to save my current ROM so that I can put it back the way it was, in case I need to deal with T-Mobile on warranty issues.
Thanks for your help.
Steve
You won't be able to use your device as a wireless modem with any of the new roms. They don't have the wmodem program that some of the European roms came with. So that is out. To back up your rom prior to updating is not only simple, it is a great idea. Just go here, read the forum, and grab the tools...easy... http://www.xda-developers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2189
I thought I was beginning to understand. Looks like I'm still more in the dark though.
First, thanks for the link to XDATools.exe program. I have downloaded it, but it appeared to use a bunch of scripts to tell it how to work, so I didn't try to run it. From the link provided, it looks like if I simply double-click on the executable on my Win XP PC, it will bring up a wizard. I'll give it a try.
As for the wireless modem, I am totally deflated! I saw a number of posts regarding the fact that it is not in any of the WM 2003 ROMS, but I thought I could install the 'special edition' ROM from this site and get the wireless modem feature to work. Is this not the case for USA users?
I can give up if I must. But, I was hoping there would be some fruit on this vine.
Thanks again,
Steve
from what i understand then there is no specielt edition of 2003 on this site
there is however a special edition of some old 2002
Hey everyone. I am considering buying the Cingular 8125, which is also the Wizard i guess, and unlocking it to use with my AT&T plan. I dont want to change plans because i have an awesome plan, etc.
My question is, what will i be able to, and not be able to use on this phone using that old network? I suppose the data features will be useless because im not on cingulars network?
What do you guys think?
Thanks!
you will be able to use is unlocked but realize that cingulars tower coverage is better then atts, ..they purposley lower the coverage capacity of att devices so that u see a difference on cingular. And the data plans for att are now none existant . So beware.
are you currently doing this?
I just got a reply from someone who is using the mmode also.
i currently have no data on my cell plan, shoot....
can i ask where you got your phone? i am about to pay 450.00 for a non-contract 8125 tomorrow.
i'm posting this from an unlocked 8125 on a cingular blue (old AT&T) plan and I absolutely love it. I see no slowdown where i'm at compared to the cingular sim chips. on dslreports.com/mspeed I average between 125 and 155 kbs.
if you still can hurry and add unlimited mmode for $25 a month before they completely freeze the at&t accounts so that any change/add would warrant a migration.
once you do, get your 8125, carrier unlock it, cid unlock it, flash with button's cooked rom, flash with radio rom 1.13, customize your extended rom to the way you want (no need to use the cingular extended rom, its just bloatware because your on at&t's settings.
to get edge working just set your connections to connect to "my work network" on both settings, then go into my work network and add a connection "cellular (gprs)",name it at&t edge (or whatever you want. now the important part is that you have to set the apn as "proxy" without the quotes. then set this connection connects to the internet under the proxy setting.
leave username and password blank and domain blank. that should do it, then connect to internet explorer and you should be surfing on edge. good luck.
I paid full retail also, $490 after tax, and it was worth every penny. I could have got it for $250 if I migrated and used my FAN buisness account, but my blue plan is sooo much better. good luck.
cingular is pretty much refusing to sell one of these to me! The local store is out of them, and told me to call cingular to try to get one, and they wont let me have it without signing a contract. now what?
KINetics, i sent you a PM about details about how you did each of those steps. Are there writeups anywhere? Any additional help would be great. Thanks.

You should be able to order off line for full retail price of $449 without the contract. Thats where I got mine but had to pay full retail as I had just upgraded my phone with the Cingular 2125. I had 30 days to return the 2125, which I did, so they should credit my account soon with the price difference once it posts. I dont see why you cant just flat out buy it for retail tho. Just my 2c.
i'd love to do that but i cannot find any option online to buy the phone without a contract. how did you do it? I go to cingular.com and I try but cant get it to the card without a plan. I am on the old AT&T so if i try to Upgrade my device, it says i cant, i need to call because i need new plan?
suggestions?. thanks
danrw84: If you go to www.imatephonestore.com you can buy an unlocked phone there. I am using a JasJar with my AT&T SIM. No problems at all. You will have to pay full retail and get a Imate K-Jam which is the same as a Cingular 8125. The phone is $749 so i'm not sure you want to pay that much but it is completely unlocked and you can use with any GSM plan
They are based outside of Chicago so you can get next day service if you wish.

749 is quite a bit! Ebay has much better prices on the unlocks.
I got the phone thru cingular today for 314.00 its supposed to arrive tomorrow.
i am going to try to do it myself.
as far as the post from KINetics, anyone know where to get ahold of those ROMS hes refering to?
I did exactly what you're looking to do. I have all the settings if you get a phone. I bought one, cancelled the contract and took the fee hit, then unlocked it, etc.
PM me if you need the settings or have any questions.
hey everyone.. just signed up and wanted to say hi.
i just ordered my new MDA, and should be here in a few days! ive had the SK3 for a month after upgrading from the SK2, and its just not what it used to be. Im looking for something with way more functionality other than being cool. Not to mention a more mature phone.
anyway, i just wanted to see if you guys could help me. seeing as how i dont have the phone yet, i wanted to read as much as i can about hacking it up. im aware that the stock phone (USA Tmobile MDA) rom isnt very well, so i need some pointers on where to start...
ive tried searching already, but theres only so many "newbie" threads i can sift through... basically can someone point me into the right direction of everything i need to get started? it would be most appreciated! Wink i guess which rom, how to update, which apps, where to go... lol, basically everything!
ill obvisouly be reading until the day the phone comes (and charged for 12 hours) so i should be more knowledgeable by the time the phone arrives.. but i really appreiciate any help!
thanks!

The first thing to check is that your MDA has the latest ROM (2.26) - intalling this solved a lot of my problems. I have no other "hacks" on the MDA and am now happy with its performance.
I would definitly start by SIM and CID unlocking the phone with lokiwiz (free and available on this forum) if it has a 1.X and not a 2.x rom (if the comm manager screen has 4 icons not 6...), because once this is done it is permanent, and once you upgrade it is MUCH harder to do.. if you need specific directions let me know.
I would then upgrade to the T-Mo 2.26 rom as suggested above, I am using it now and I really like it.
I personally use Registry Wizard to tweak the wizard, at least for the basics... Some good tweaks to start with are disabeling the go online and unsigned program warnings, enable 802.11g, Enable Indicator (lets you know when CAPS and symbol are on), Different GPRS/EDGE icon, and personally I always enable the IE 4-way nav, engineering mode (type string *#*#364#*#* into phone and hit send to show cool technical info...) I also set GPRS always on... (probably not a good idea unless you have unlimited data, like I do... (if not you also may elect not to disable the go-online warning, so you know when its doing stuff...))
Agile messenger is a good program, total commander is more or less essential, and I have recently been using a program called Hubdog ( I think it can do more than I do with it, but I just use it as an rss reader...) All are free. Novii remote also works well (however with limeted 2-3 meter range) but is not free...
If you want any more info on programs I use, where to get them, ect..., or any other tweaks please just let me know.
i appreciate the help!
ill definitely be coming to you for questions
when you first got your phone, did you charge it for the whole 12 hours before using it?

I upgraded to a custom 2.24 ROm without SIM unlocking. If I want to SIM unlock now should I downgrade to 1.8, SIM unlock, then upgrade to whatever ROM I want (probably xelecin's custom 2.26 when it's out). I don't really care about the SIM lock since I'm in a contract with Tmo, I'm not changing any time soon. I just don't want to have problems if I upgrade the ROM later on.
Sorry not trying to hijack...I swear

no problem
so, did everyone here charge their phone for the full 12 hours before using their phones?
also, another question, on the sidekick there was an app called "money clip" where it allowed me to keep track of different accounts such as my checking, savings, and credit cards... are there any apps like that available for the MDA?
i tired to use exel right now to see if i can just do it the ghetto way, but its not really letting me.. ;x
hey good job man (i donno about money clip) about returning the sidekick 3 for the MDA. i did that too. and i upgraded from a sidekick 2 too.
i can tell you the MDA is at least 9 times better (random number?)... but the only thing i haven't gotten to work is setting up outlook email... hopefully you have better luck. (but it is because the free yahoo doesn't support it).
hmmm, i charged phone for maybe two hours out of the box, did the cid unlock and sim unlock, and have been flashing the rom ever since (remember to thank all the folks here who cook up all these lovely roms)

haha.. cool, so i dont need to do a full charge on the it?
where can i find the instructions on how to flash the ROM? and also, which ROM is recommeneded?
I'm a newb waiting for my MDA too. I dont see why one should SIM unlock if he/she already has the MDA (US). Can't I just upgrade to the 2.26? Or are there some feautures that I would be noticably be missing?

What version of lokiwiz would you recommend using? I noticed there are two different threads, one for 0.2 and one for 0.3. Do they do the same thing? The steps for 0.3 seem to require a second SIM, is that true? Thanks.
Ok, first, the reason to SIM unlock is because then you can swap to a different providers SIM later on, for instance if you dump T-mo or you travel to Europe or something. For me, it simply seems like a good idea to do it now, because then I know I have it if I need it.
CID unlock is for using other providers ROMS. You can just upgrade to the 2.26, but then what happens when you decide you want to upgrade to the cingular 3.xx b/c of some amazing feature... Once you are in a 2.x rom it becomes much harder to do this. It is sooooo simple, why not just do it now? again, your phone, yor decision, and I think flashing an unofficial rom will void the warranty if they can prove it (personally I don't care, some do)
As far as Lokiwiz, I used Lokiwiz 02b, downloaded from this forum. The newer version, .03, is only needed if you have already upgraded to a 2.x ROM.
As far as SIM unlocking after upgrading, I do not know if it is possible to downgrade from a 2.x to a 1.x, especially if you haven't CID unlocked already... I think you may be stuck using the .03 2 sim card method (this is required as the phone dosen't know it needs to prompt for unlock code untill you enter a 'banned (ie from another provider)' sim... get a cheep prepay (NOT T-mo prepay if you have T-mo) from the local drug store/Walmart... This may be easier than downgrading and then upgrading anyway, and since ( I am assuming) you have already CID unlocked, I do not think you will have any problems...
.02 does not need the second sim as it changes the setting directly by accessing some part of the memory on the device, which cannot, apparently be done in the new roms...
O. Brown... SIM, as I mentioned above, is different from CID. You are thinking of CID. I would do it simply b/c you cannot do it later, yet once done it is permanent...
Bittermormon, same idea...
As far as chargeing, I am notorios for taking it out of the box and hitttng the power. If it turns on, well then why should I charge it...? Plus, you can turn it on plugged in, so if you are worried, plug it into the wall and then start playing... but I don't want to promise this won't have some negative effect, do what you feel safe with, all I am saying is what worked for me...
As far as financial software goes, I checked out the PocketPcMag Nominations for best software 2006, in the financial category... Cash Organizer '05 Premium, Pocket Quicken, PocketMoney, Spb Finance, Stock Manager... I have not used any of theese. I do not know if they are what you want... I do not know how much they cost, but it is a place to start at least.
As far as pocket outlook, no problems here, except with gmail pop access, which always seemed kinda... messed up... to me... So, I did something even better... I setup a free exchange account with mail2web.com (I think they call it mail2web live or something...) and my gmail forwards a copy of all incoming mail to the exchange mail address... THis allows me to use PUSH email for my gmail acct (which is my main acct.) If you have a corporate exchange, you can use that instead. The only "Problem" with this is that deleting messages on the phone does not delete them in gmail... I personally like this as I cna then use gmail on my pc to its fullest to label, archive, ect... On the ppc I delete all of the newsletters ect... and only really read personal mail or important stuff. This lets me keep my phone inbok clear, and I can still read all of the other stuff later on the desktop... Or you can always just switch to using the exchange email address as your main...
And as far as the best ROM, well, that is as much opinion as anything else... I am running the T-mo 2.26 with the extended rom installed... I have noit seen any cooked versions of this yet, although I believe someone on the HOFO is working on one... I gotta say, I like this rom. I have a few small glitches, but I think that it is installed software, not the ROM...
A few other tips... I recently discovered microsoft voice command, and I am enjoying it very much... First of all, no setting voice tags, and secondly, for me, I could never remember exactly what the voice tag was for someone, especially when I had one for the house and cell... Now I can just say ther full name ie, Call John Doe on Mobile, and the phone does it... as with any other software, your mileage may vary... PM me if you want me to email the cab...
Also, buying a large miniSD is a great idea, I have a Sandisk 1gb and I love it. Watch out for 2gb cards, a small minority may be valid, most are fakes, and all are probably lower quality...
Any other questions, feel free to ask, or even PM me (especially if I do not seem to be responding fast enough....)
And Uh, SORRY about the length... just trying to answer everythng...
Hi, my son has an O2 contract about to expire and ready for upgrade. He has quite a good phone, so, does not need a new one. I want to use this upgrade to give myself an HD2 to use on my own contract.
O2 have said they will unlock the phone for me to do this.
However, are there any other things I should look out for? I am told that O2 overlay the firmware and remove certain functions that would still be there in the normal HTC build, like, router facilty etc?
I could cut an internet deal with somebody like Carphone Warehouse etc as I am told they send out a complete untouched HTC build?
This is my first post, so, soon to be an HD2 owner, just want to ensure I get it right!!
Thanks in advance,
Dave

I have an o2 phone, and to be honest I wouldn't worry about their customisations. The only thing missing is the wifi access point (even though they advertise it on their website). I moved quickly to cooked roms that have it in anyway, so no problem, or you could go for HSPL then a wwe official rom, which restores the wifi access point but keeps you on supposedly more stable (hmmm) roms.
The main downside to it is that you have to wait for o2 specific rom updates if you dn't want to use HSPL, (as with most providers), but to be honest if you are getting the phone for free, its a small price to pay.
O2 unlocking can take up to 28 days, AND you might have to call them again and they will say 'oh sorry, we'll do the unlock form again, it'l be another 28 days' (bastids) so don't expect to be able to use it on a different network straight away.
You can get it from O2, the phone would be SIM locked to O2 (which you can unlock) and likely to be vendor locked HTCs end as well. You can bypass this using HSPL to install any ROM you want but if you can get it from CPW as a completely unlocked phone I would do so as you can then do what you want with it
customisation is fine its basically a wallpaper which you can change.

I got my HD2 from O2 which is now unlocked via O2 and running a custom rom which has all the features that O2 removed and more.
I find custom roms give me better useability and most are better than stock for features so wasn't too concerned about branded or not, Just what price I could get the deal at.
The only problem I find is not being able to download updates from HTC on my serial# but as above I usually use custom anyway so don't bother me really.
THANKFULLY the HD2 from O2 is nothing like the Diamond from O2 which had an awful blue theme! The HD2 looks how a HD2 shoudld look, as mentioned all they change is the home screen wallpaper.
Thanks for the prompt replies, much appreciated.
The fact that O2 take 28 days to unlock, together with the "normal" ROM upgrade probs, that has convinced me to go the CPW route I think. There are better options price wise on the net, but with the CPW, I can collect on the upgrade date, retain the number, job done. I dont intend to make massive use of the router facility, just small time use in case i need to use my laptop where there is no normal connectivity, very light use and better than signing up for a monthly mobile broadband contract, or minimum monthly top ups on pay as you go (most of them are not actually PAYG due to this!!!)
Thanks, Dave
Just received my HD2 from o2.
It has 1.48 ROM. No O2 customisations whatsoever. I cannot see any O2 insignia. just an O2 app to send me the net/mms/sms settings.

that is actually part of your sim card, not form o2. if you put a vodafone sim in you get a vodafone settings app there instead.(well except its locked, of course, hehe)
If an unlocked phone is important to you (it was to me) then CPW is the only way to go. All their phones come unlocked as standard.
Have you started reading up on here yet on all the tweaks and changes you can undertake? Don't want to burst your bubble but think carefully; if you are happy with spending time hunting out tweaks and tweaking the phone to the way you want it then the HD2 will satisfy all your desires in this direction.
If however you don't fancy doing that and just want a high end working phone then do consider whether the HD2 is really for you.
Good luck; hope it all works out.

p.s. my o2 handset is sim unlocked. currently using it with my T-mobile PAYG sim until number transfers.
it also has everything enabled - even wifi router. 1.48 loaded. works well.
I've trawled the many numerous fora in these parts, but can't find any comprehensive answer to my woes.
Recently, I upgraded to a Nexus One. It's all well and good, and I want to sell my G1. I wiped it and reset it back to stock firmware using DREAIMG.NBH, and now all of my cyanogen madness has been swept away. The phone has stock recovery, stock SPL, stock radio and stock Android. All 1.0.
The problem is, no matter what SIM card I put in the G1, it refuses to get a 3G connection, even though it will get a regular GSM connection. Without this, I can't sign in to a Google account, and this means I can't use the phone at all, as early builds of Android didn't let you use wi-fi to sign in for the first time. I've tried an O2 SIM and a Vodafone SIM, both of which have unlimited internet on them. The latter is used in my shiny Nexus One.
Firstly, why won't it get a 3G signal? There's no way I can sell the thing in this state. Does it need a newer version of the radio or something?
Secondly, is there any way to update it to stock Donut 1.6 without rooting? I'd rather sell the phone in an unmodified state.
Oh, and I've already SIM unlocked it, so that isn't a concern.
I have basically the same problem, I just went back to Android 1.0 and I can't connect to my Google account. I have an AT&T SIM card, but it's unlocked and was working before I reformatted, but it still wont work. Can anybody help the both of us possibly?
As another FYI, it's a T-Mobile G1 from the UK, but if I can have it run generic Android without resorting to rooting (ie: easy to sell) that'd be great. Options, please!
