Cincy Bell Streak is on its way/New Streak owner Qs inside. - Streak 5 General

Long of it short I asked a member of a private automotive forum if they would be willing to pick up a phone off of craigslist or Cincy bell for the outright price and he came through!
I got a pretty solid deal and an otter box in the mix. I will be retiring my Samsung Vibrant, which was a tough choice, but ultimately I wanted more screen real estate and nothing offers it like the Streak.
On the flipside all of my phones have always been stock. I am going to spend some time researching the best roms etc... What if any are the major concerns, hurdles, and benefits to look forward to?

Stock rom so far most used are the 351 and 354 version. See here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Dell_Streak#Official for the list of official roms
Can start from this thread on flashing rom (me and a few others posting some useful links and info) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1149496

[Q] Soliciting advice so I can make an informed decision.

I will be switching carriers shortly from T-mobile to Verizon and need some input from experienced users. I currently have a Cliq XT it is my is my first and only Android phone and even though it is a nice phone it is severely limited. I want to get something more powerful and up to date. I have decided to either buy a Samsung Fascinate or a Droid X. Can you guys give me some pros and cons from your points of view. I have seen multiple comparisons online but I wanted the opinion of XDA forum members. Thanks! (pardon if this is in the wrong section or has already been asked, its my first post)

I just left T-mo, and I miss my Nexus terribly.
I went with the Fascinate hands down. Better processor, better GPU, better display, easier root, better camera.
I was on the horns of the same dilemma, Droid X or Fascinate.
Background: I figured out that, except for a brief flirtation with a BlackBerry Storm, the last six phones I've had were all made by Motorola. The term "Motorola Fanboy" sounds really, really strange, but I guess that's what I was... I pre-ordered the Droid 1, and got it on release day, had it rooted the day the root process broke. There's more, but you see where this is going.
When the Droid X was announced, I asked "Where do I put my money?" Then I heard a frightening term: "E-fuse". Of course, that turned out to be something of an exaggeration, but the idea was troubling. This was followed by "Locked Bootloader".
With all this, I still wanted one, but I wanted to actually hold one before I plunked down my cash. I'm still waiting. My local VZW store, Best Buy, Costco, you name it, gets a couple in once or twice a month, and they're gone by lunchtime. I just looked at the VZW site, and right now they're saying the estimated ship date if you order today is the 24th.
So between being locked up and unavailable (okay, I'm being impatient here), I decided to go a different direction.
I pre-ordered my Fascinate, got it on release day, and had it rooted within 90 minutes (20 of which were confirming that the root was persistent). Less than two weeks later, we're on the verge of a custom recovery
This thing is SUPER light, and WAFER thin! It doesn't have that bulge on the back like the DX does. I also agree with the description that the SF is "Just the right size". My neighbor has an EVO, and I think phones of that size are actually a little too bulky.
Don't listen to much about the things people are complaining about with the Fascinate. Every new handset gets some of that, and it all gets worked out in the first few weeks.
The ideal thing, of course, would be to hold them both, one after the other, and see which one gives you the bigger smile. I tried to do that, but wasn't able to. It's hard to imagine the DX would make me happier than the Fascinate though...
And, of course, the universal disclaimer, YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY!
You're not going to go wrong either way, btw...

Fascinate. End of discussion.

Thanks guys
Thanx for all of your responses! From what I have seen and what you guys are saying the Fascinate sounds like the better device. I just have a few doubts... Mainly the GPS issues, Bing, and the fact that I don't trust Samsung when it comes to updates.
This thread has also helped push me towards the fascinate... I always thought the droid x was too big anyway.
But now I'm mostly concerned about the GPS just like the OP... The update thing is unsettling too... I would hope they plan on putting gingerbread on these phones :O

Dude get the Fascinate. I went from a Nexus, to the Evo and just came from a D2. I'm completely impressed. The battery has barely moved 1.5 hrs into my 1st day of use. The Evo gave me HELL had every ROM and could never get the out of box comfort and ease I've had so far.
Only things are the bottom buttons, I have 1 bar less of service in my house..haven't tested gps yet but these are all things I can live with and we're only on 2.1. Get it.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App & yes I'm a chick.
from what i have read it seems the GPS issue is hit or miss. thats not going to stop me from getting one. if the GPS doesnt work i will just keep exchanging them till i get one that does. of course it could just be a software issue but i think its to early to tell just yet.
Motorola + eFuse is the only issue you need to think about
Currently it hasn't been cracked, so if you want to install custom kernels, bootloaders, etc, I suggest you run far away from anything with the name Motorola
Not to mention the Hummingbird cpu/gpu blows TI's OMAP out of the water, as well as the SAMOLED screen
The only plus you get out of the X is .3" larger screen and HDMI out, which I'm sure we will get in a few months
"& yes I'm a chick"
LMAO, I love it!
My only qualm with the Fascinate is the bloat-ware. It's chocked full of it. I think it's to differentiate it from their Droid line.
You can easily circumvent it by starting with a launcher like ADW or LauncherPro and starting there.
Once you root, there's many more options. I would recommend staying away from the lagfix. You'll read more about it, but stay away from that one. It makes your phone act a little jerky which my phone actually has yet to recover from.
Other than that, it's awesome. You'll prefer it over the Droid X when the custom roms start coming out for it!
And it's super light, slim, and pretty sleek for a 4" screen phone.

160,000 views - Only one ROM developer

Well, the Streak forums are about to hit 160k...but still we've only got one ROM developer (Although he and the others involved are doing a fantastic job!).
So what's wrong with the streak that nobody wants to develop for it?
Surely with the thousands of people who visit the section there must be at least two or three of them that have the necessary skills to have a go?
Do we have B.O. and nobody has told us?
Hey! Good point
I was surprised to see such limited ROM development too - especially as I came over to Android from Windows Mobile.
There are ROMs still being developed for my almost-ancient Touch Pro - I had to go back to it as backup phone as my Dell is taken for screen repair.
I have a feeling it is harder for the Android platform?
I spent most of my time flashing WM roms because, although they may have good designs by Chef's etc, the core platform was a waste of time so not possible to improve the user experience by much - but we did search and search!
Going back to Touch Pro now seems soooo sluggish and boring!
Anyway, goodnight.
i was thinking about this earlier too. but android phones typically have less roms. and what other roms would you want?

x2. Is Steve part of Cyan's team? His name is listed under CyanogenMod wiki as the lead dev for the streak.
Maybe we can put up a donation thread to get some devs in line and help get them their own streak to work with. That's how we did it on the Vibrant forums to get devs involved. If you look at that forum now, they got a ton of dev support and Samsung isn't particularly a CM favorite to work with. I'm guessing it's the same with Dell.
I guess its because the streak isn't as popular as other devices. I'm pretty tech savvy and have been reading up a lot on rom cooking (more like file pulling/pushing/swapping) for android but there is no one concise source, I've ben mixing and matching info from various posts, blogs, and forums. So hopefully pretty soon I'll be reaching the ranks of dj_steve

This is the first GSM phone I've owned where I had only ONE custom ROM option outside of the Stock ROM. Even some of the less popular phones on this site have more ROMs and developers.
As much as I love DJ Steve for what he's done and is still doing, I would like more options. I just hope Steve doesn't get tired of all the begging and whining from folks.

I have always been a WinMo guy myself, and my last phone, the HD2, had about 30 ROMs going for it.
It was brilliant, every one was different, some had little nuances others had their own. I love it when its like that.
But then I came to the Streak, with only one Chef! It seems a little strange to me, but I will just have to deal with it.
I prefer to have a big choice in ROMs. I wonder if the WP7 scene will become like the WM6.5.x scene in the future?
Doubtful since win7 isn't as open as Android is. Speaking of the HD2, did you notice how much Android Roms are available for that device? I lost count LOL.

I've been on 2 previous Android devices before the Streak. The G1 and the Legend. The had loads of roms. Cyan's one of them. I didnt do much modding on the Legend though. At least, not that I remember. Hope atleast a couple of devs get interested with the Streak.
I think if there's a free kitchen for cooking the ROMs, it might help with getting people involved.

Yeah, and there are about 100k posts stating that users have tried this and tried that and now their Streak doesn't work properly
More 'developers' would just increase that exponentially and the forum would soon be full of wingy baby winers blaiming their device for not working correctly
There were lots of roms for the htc tilt and moto droid those were my last two phones but most of them were buggy and made me want to put my stock rom back on with root priveledges. This rom for dell streak I have to say is the best experience ive had with a custom rom so far. Im on steves android 2.2 on att white streak. Although I love the rom and im glad it was easy to decide which one to put on my phone since theres only one, that does seem very strange there is only one. Actually information on the sreak in general has been very hard for me to come by. None of my friends or family even heard of the dell streak and even the people at att were trippin on it. It took me days of googling to figure out how to root this damn white one from best buy cause theres no damn info on it. I dont know why, its by far the best phone ive ever laid my hands on and everyone elses phone looks like a joke in comparison. Its funny wen people with the hd or evo or droid x think they have a big screen and u pull out a five incher a hahaha lol.

Received a Response from Acer regarding locked bootloader

Good news everyone!
In an earlier thread (the [DEV] Recovery/Config thread), I mentioned that my company has a large corporate account with Acer and I was going to work my contacts to try and contact Acer and bring attention to the bootloader issue.
In my initial message to them, I informed them that Acer has a reputation of being "hostile" to the development community, reputations that the Xoom and the Transformer do not have. Specifically, I stated we needed the kernel source, which they're required to provide per the GPL, and for the bootloader to be unlocked so that we could load custom recovery and images. I told him that several people have stated they have returned the Iconia because it wasnt friendly for development, and that the developers and "power users" in this community have a vested interest in seeing development thrive and seeing the device succeed. I had two contacts with Acer I had hoped would garner a response.
Today, I received a response from one of those contacts, the Senior Product Manager of Notebooks, Tablets and Netbooks for Acer America.
While I can't post his contact information or the full text of his response (he was not empowered to speak publically on behalf of the company), he was able to share a bit of information with me that I can relay.
To summarize:
- Acer is aware of the community's reaction to the locked bootloader and unreleased kernel. They saw what went on with HTC's bootloader fiasco and they are now discussing their policy internally.
- They view the perception of the Iconia in the Android development and enthusiast community as very important.
- While he couldn't give me any specifics, he did reassure me that he is actively working with his team to find how quickly they can address the bootloader/kernel issues with the Iconia and what specific actions they would take.
So they are aware of the issue and they are working to correct it. He gave me both his work and personal contact information and he said he'd keep me posted of updates.
My personal guess is that there is more involved in the decision than just the Acer America team, but at least they're aware of the negative perception and they're taking steps to correct it.
I'll keep you all advised as I find out more, but I'm happy to see progress being made! There's still hope yet.
excellent, I believe there is an open petition thread (in general) that you may want to forward on to him, might give more ammo with the higher ups!
Good work my friend!
That's an encouraging response, kudos to Acer for hiring the guy. Too many times you get the basic canned response that goes something like "we know what we are doing, so suckit and deal with it". And good job, Fumetsu, on what sounds like a well thought out and worded request for info in the first place.
This give me hope that I'll be able to get flash-happy with my A500 in the future, even though I bought it knowing that I would probabaly be getting something else later in the year. Honeycomb just doesn't have all the dev potential that I've seen with my GTab, Nook, and Inspire...... but one can always dream.
Very good news indeed. I just want to be able to use stock Honeycomb, or Ice Cream Sandwich when that's available, without all the 'extra' software and apps that are generally unnecessary. From a business view it seems like they could have saved quite a bit of money and time if they had left the bootloader unlocked in the first place. All they would need to do is host their own update files online for people that want them and leave the rest to the Dev community. Just my thinking anyway. I feel like there is a large enough user base in the Android community that would justify an unlocked bootloader. I guess all we can do is wait and see what happens. =)
Nice. Thanks for your effort. Hope they do listen to Iconia users!!!

Thanks all. Although he was light on specifics it was a very encouraging response. I just hope they move fast, the market is growing rapidly and dev interest can wane for the "next big thing " and Acer can find itself trailing in the market, even if it has better hardware and potential.

Pure speculation here... I think that I read somewhere that AT&T will be releasing an Acer Iconia Android a501 tab soon. Could that be why Acer has this policy? After all, AT&T is notorious about this sort of thing. My Atrix and I know this all to well.
My two cents:
1) it's really not a good idea to start of a conversation with someone you want to give you a welcoming response with "I informed them that Acer has a reputation of being hostile to the development community." You don't want to kiss their ass but you certainly don't want to tell a company that everyone hates them and then expect them to do something nice for you.
2) Market penetration versus market stability. Right now Acer has a product that is readily available. Reviews have been mixed. (I ignore the ones who ***** about weight because 0.2 ounce difference is two quarters and three dimes in weight. Grow a f*cking pair biceps, you wieners.) But CNET and all the other mainstream reviewers claim that an iPad (not iPad II) and the Asus Transformer are the better deals.
But let's be honest about the responses. Sure, iPad is a gimme because it's a hip, cultural thing. Just like telling some kid that Pabst Blue Ribbon beer is **** will not get them to change brands as long as it is perceived to be "cool." So forget the iPad. As for the Transformer? Sure you can have an unlocked bootlader and new snazzy 3.1 roms, but who besides the true fanboy has one of them? They won't have stock until October of this year, and then it will be newer more powerful models coming out. The majority of people have bought a computer (desktop) and a cellphone and that's as far as they go in tech. Sure you have an iPhone but do they really use it for computing and service? They load the apps that their kids told them to. Acer can fill this gap by doing one or two things in the immediate future that could lock them into a top spot: drop the price of A500 by $40 or, work with the telcos to build and ship the next gen, wireless tablet. They are not going to drop the price because the units are selling enough that some bean counter says it competes with the other tablets in the market. But this would be an issue if Asus had their **** together and had the Transformer in plenty of stock.
This is the reason for the locked bootlader. If companies plan to add wireless to the next gen (or rev) tablets, they will get a lot of attention from the telcos. The phone companies do not, I repeat, do not want unlimited broadband connectivity. These are the same people who still charge for cell-phone texts. Why? Because they can and they know people will go over limits. Limits and exceeding them rack in the dollars. And they have millions of dollars set aside to keep their limits (profits rolling in).
If the broadband wireless next version of the Acer is different enough in Honeycomb 3.1 than the A500, then they might release an unlocked profile for the small group of XDA developers and those that read this forum. For the general population (and the large amount of sales), telcos want locked systems so that metered broadband is the norm. But if there is any way of porting and unlocked A500 to the wireless model, I don't think they'll do it. Also, it shows good faith to the telcos that they are already in step with them about creating limits on the user base. The phone companies will show favor to locked systems over the others. And that's the second choice Acer already made.

Hello!
Just to clarify, I didn't bash the Iconia or Acer itself, only that it is perceived as "hostile" to 3rd party developers. I actually took that "hostile" quote directly from a developer on these boards and compared development efforts with the Xoom and the Transformer. I made sure to stress that we have a vested interest in the success of 3rd party development on the Acer so that its perception as developer friendly in the community could be improved.
My initial contact and his response were cordial and respectful, so I don't believe he took it this way. I structured my contact with him stating that I felt the Iconia was a great product, had benefits the other Android tablets do not, has the distinction as of now being the fastest selling Android Honeycomb tablet, and that developers are eager to work with the device. He was quite clear that he valued the feedback and they wanted to and are working to address it.
We exchanged personal and business contact information so it was definitely a positive response.

I wouldn't want to risk his position within Acer by asking for a leak. I told him that I would redact his contact info and would not directly quote his response because he is a business contact for my company and I don't want to jeopardize that relationship or get him in trouble with the company. He was clear that they know it is an issue and that he personally was working with his team to find out the best way to resolve it in the quickest manner possible. Knowing how big corporations work, it's not up to one man or I believe even Acer America itself, but I surmise there are higher level talks going on. His team is directly responsible for product development of tablets and netbooks and I believe he is in a prime position to move Acer towards resolution.

It definitely wasn't a canned commerical response that one would get from T1 Acer Tech Support. If it was something I felt was said just to placate me or was just a generic statement, I would not have bothered posting this to get everyone's hopes up. It really gave me encouragement that they do see this as an issue and that he does want to help.

Ask him why they haven't released the source yet, please.
To remain in compliance with the license, they'd have had to release it the same day as the bins. :|
I'm really starting to wish I waited for the transformer.

Some thoughts for today….

We always comply about the fragmentation in Android OS, but lately we experience the same thing at DEV/USER level now we have pudding, fruit cake, cheese cake, orange cake, IHOP, **** cake, what else? And for the record I am not trying to troll on anyone by the way I am happy camper with my Atrix, first time from the time I got it that I really enjoy it feeling that it worth what I paid for it. My setup so far: GB ATT OTA 4.5.91 (I applied it knowing the risk, and I don’t regret any second), Unlock BL by pudding & OC by Egan, freezing blot ware with TiBu and Autostart, getting 2970+ Quadrant constantly, NO FC, No battery drain, any weird issue, just a snappy experience.
I saw a lot of misinformation lately trying to get as much of traffic as they can get without thinking the real deal of this forum have the best experience with your device.
Just for the records RSD is indeed an internal Motorola tool BUT is the only way to get your device to out-of-the-box state, so from the resale point is a handy tool. I bet if you ever had the experience to buy a second hand phone, mostly all the time you are looking for something that you can return to the out-of-the-box-state and start modding from a fresh start right? So think on the same way about RSD tools.
I end this just saying that I found my sweet spot on my unit with CONS and PRO like everything else in this life, but with a big smile in my face.
Enjoy the ride!
I have to agree, this is the most fragmented forum I've ever seen. To many tasty delicacies, why not just have a couple, solid, good ones? I doubt we'd ever get CM7 at the rate we are going...
@mramirezusa, I don't disagree about such correlations in the 'fragmentation' of Android OS and the likeness of the development threads or offerings; however we must give it time to streamline. Looking at similar forums of other 'mature' devices, such as the captivate, one can make the assumption that our own Atrix development forum will follow suit (in their apparent organization) and uniformity. After all, original mods and scripts from March are still being utilized and we are only beginning our third week into GB and unlocked boot loaders, and our international friends just gained some BL access as well yesterday.
I must agree strongly though that the development forum is getting seemingly cluttered, but the rate of production, nor have our spirits, ever been higher.
@philz, keep your head up, mind you three weeks ago, BL was looked until "maybe" our official OTA GB Moto update.

[Q] What's Next After 2.2.2

I know we'll never get Gingerbread. However, say for another more popular phone, is GB usually the next step after a 2.2.2 update?
In a perfect world we might get small upgrades or fixes for froyo but the next big update would be Gingerbread.... before we can ask whats next I think we have to answere this question: How long are you (we) planning to keep phone? I personally dont have all the info to answere my own question...where should I go to ask Q's about carrier and prepaid plans etc? Or should I start a thread in Continuum General Discussion since my Q's involve more than just carrier upgrades and service agreements?

I had some wild ideas about a GB rom, or even a new custom Froyo rom, but it's way, way beyond my abilities, or at the very least, way beyond my time.
Personally, the ticker irritates me. At first, I thought it was a great innovative feature, but I find myself accidentally touching it when I'm trying to do something else, and it's become more of an irritation than an added feature.
So here's what I'd love to see, though since I'll be selling this phone before the month is out, I probably won't ever see this for myself. The ticker display would be far more useful as a dock and notification bar in one, freeing up some very useful real estate on the screen.
All in all, this would have been a great phone, if Samsung and Verizon would have made the decision to make their customers happy. It still is a good phone, considering its overall performance, but what's kept this from being a great phone is the under-developed software from the manufacturer. I won't be buying another Samsung phone for sure.
Yes Samsung has left a bad taste in my mouth over all of this as well pastor.
I hope you stick around even though your getting rid of your Continuum, your advice on this forum has been invaluable....in fact reading your stuff taught me how to flash these to begin with, and i really am grateful for how clear and consise you have documented all of your work. I wish you the best of luck in all that you do!
