Works for linux too, but you have to change the scripts. Essentially, you are flashing boot.img and recovery.img, but skipping system.img.
Then you use the stock recovery to load the stock firmware and blammo- back to stock. You can use the 8445 firmware version if you want to go back to stock 3.1.

What do I need to do to go back to full stock? Is it enough to just flash the stock zip in recovery and then lock via fastboot command or do I need to flash something else too?
The stock ZIP in recovery should suffice. Obviously the device won't be locked but it'll be stock in terms of the OS
I've been using a custom kernel on my G900W8 but I'm getting a lot of performance issues, so I want to go back to stock.
I do have a file I extracted called boot.img which I believe is the kernel. How do I restore it?

Wait until you get an expert opinion. I was looking here and there for threads to extract and flash the stock kernel but ended up bricking my device. (No recovery, No bootup, THANK GOD I could access download mode).
I extracted the boot.img but didn't know how to flash it. There was a thread, a script that could turn .img to .tar.md5. I did that and flashed the file through Odin and boom. Stuck at bootlogo. So I try to restore the nandroid backup, but recovery keeps bootlooping.
Had to install stock rom completely through Odin...But it still isn't booting up.
User @nickpatel130285 has shared stock kernel for G900F in this post.
I flashed using that zip file and it worked like charm. So what you can do is replace the boot.img in that zip file with the one which is compatible with your variant and leave the rest as it is. Repack and Flash.
It should work but just in case if you mess things up you'll need to flash stock rom using Odin. So make sure you make a nandroid backup and have a copy on your PC (safely).
Flash at your own risk.
I am on elementalx kernel. It is acting weird at times. I woukd like to revert back to stock kernel. I need help.
You can find stock kernel in stock ROM. Download and then flash the boot.img in fastboot.

I want to sell my phone so I just want to know the correct way to revert to stock.
I'm currently on RR with TWRP. I assume I won't be able to flash asus stock with TWRP am I right?
if not I just need to flash stock recovery
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64440791&postcount=8
and then flash latest asus stock

Thanks for the input
yeah i did the same, and u also should do this, bcs i think this is the easiest way to revert to stock
I put TWRP on it but I'd like to be able to go back to the stock recovery without flashing the whole stock rom.
edit: stock lollipop recovery for 8.0
Find your rom online(just google "sm-**** stock rom"), Open the rom with 7-zip. There is going to be a file called recovery.img. You can flash that with TWRP
I recommend samsungbay.com. It has faster download speeds
