[Q] regarding internal 3G HSDPA UMTS - Acer Iconia A500

so after doing weeks of research i found out the unit being used in the Acer a501 which is the 3G model. If you see a teardown you will see there is a port to plug it into a mini pci inside. The unit is GTM661/669 Mini PCIE look on alibaba or google it.
i can order a bunch of them but would like to find help for the software side.
GTM661/669 Mini PCIE should be supported by a500 but i'm not sure. i Know this is the unit they also use in the xoom 3G.
any help or insight is appreciated
anyone have any idea where i can begin

the difference between 501 and 500 unit are not just a missing GTM661/669 Mini PCIE card inside, there is no SLOT (not soldered) to insert such card, and there is not slot (not soldered) to put the sim card.

there is a pcie slot

thanks for your input but there is indeed a pcie slot in the middle of the unit, if you look at any of the teardowns you will see it right in the middle. Some even have a placeholder PCIe card in there.
ok so i've done more research and this is what i have so far, i know the a500 and a501 are the exact same unit minus 3G card. I know firmware are the same, and i know that the a500 has a pci-e port for the GTM661 3G card.
i know the a500 has a set of 3G card drivers, i know all the setup on the a500 is there such as network search and such. I just need someone to figure out how the drivers will work and if they are there already. I'm a hardware guy not that fluent in android yet

I'd like to know how you "know" the things you say you "know".
Plus, can you post any pictures that state specifically what you say you know?

Would also be interested in that. However, as I am not such a hardware guy I would be happy to see a step-by-step tutorial of how to do it.

as i mentioned in my first post, if you bother to even kindly read it, it clearly says to look up on google for acer a500 teardown. I can not post links because i am new, it wont' let me, also i know because i own one and i have it open on my lap right now. please be constructive i don't really need pessimists commenting on this. thanks
it's fairly straight forward, the antenna is already in there it just needs the card and the simholder card all being sold by Embedded Works Corporation. It'll cost around $150 for a full 3G/4G setup

I can only find 1 teardown and I don't see what you see. To me, it's clearly devoid of any 3G capable hardware or slots or PCB chips.
But if you do it, kindly post the results.

You are an hardware guy maybe, but... what the hell you want exactly?
ordering a bunch of card for sell them... 150$??? are you nuts, the A501 will not cost +150$ over the A500 (actually it does not cost more than 100$ over but that is information)
so if I summarize
*** We need to buy a 3G module
*** We need to tear down our tablet
*** We need to solder (if we got the skills)
*** We not insure that works
*** We will waste time... humm nonsense.. insanity.
Now REAL information, with picture.
First stop google... it's not an exact science...
THERE IS NO 3G Antenna on the A500. the following schematics will prove it.
THERE IS NOTHING RELATED TO 3G inside the A500
sure the form factor is the same, but it's like a "common" shape then depends the elements you include makes the things, more ram, more sdcard space etc... CPU... well
THERE IS NO SLOT FOR PCIE INSIDE THE A500 (JMIN2 3G connector is not soldered)
YOU NEED TO SOLDER A SIMCARD SLOT (JP2 SIM connector is not soldered)
YOU KNOW NOTHING
by the way I do have the schematic of the A50x series... so I think I do know better.

You both sound like you know more than me but a little latitude and a pinch of diplomacy wouldn't go amiss. Put downs like this just put people off contributing and no more contributions = no development.

I thought it was pretty clear that the OP wasn't going to take any questioning or disagreeing without throwing up his fists in offence. read #6 - it says it all about his attitude.
Clearly the OP didn't know what he was talking about even though he claimed time and time again that he "knows" things while sanaell up and provided proof that contradicts what the OP was chastising everyone else about not believing.
I think sanaell did it just right for yet another user who refuses to read what others have said time and time again, doesn't care to back up their claim in any way and who's basically just talking out their ass for whatever reason.

Sure it is irritating to see the same topics being put up on and on and on different threads but there is only 1 moderator.
And SINCE there have been so many threads why doesnt Sanaell just say so? Instead of going on and on on a topic he hates? Doesnt make sense.

Well thanks for the input
i got it working natively, all that were too stupid to open the damn thing and see what's in front of them and instead blow off their steam on people trying to do a good thing well your SOL. i'm closing this thread and leaving this ridiculous site, this is worst then a hanging i tell you, you people should be kicked out of here as well, and to the people who where helping and put very positive comments thanks you very much for you help, advice and questions. Keep on researching. The hardware is the exact same between the two and all you have to do is insert the 2 cards. Native support is given already in the firmware.

i will when i get the 3G setting fully enabled, as i posted originally the internal units will not bring up the 3G setting automatically like the USB models, also since the original simholder is impossible to find you use the aftermarket unit from that exact site. Now for just one minute look at it form my side, what have you and the other senior member put in to call it help. You want to see proof fine i will show you all the picture when i take them but until someone here grows up and starts solving the problems with the software as i mentioned originally i don't see why i would give a damn to help others when i already put so much into this.
also calling people fake or saying it's bs because you don't know much or understand things about the unit is not help. On every other thread people help to solve a single problem on this one thread everyone is trying to ****ing grill me to prove the have a bigger ****, well you don't. If it's bs how did i know the model number of the 3G unit, the pcie slot, the simcard holder that is needed, the fact that 3G setting will not automatically come up with the PCIe models. at the end of the day i have a 3G model and it has some ups and downs what you have is a lynching mob!!! again thanks for your input

You're just being argumentative. It's okay to be wrong - that's how we learn.
Until you can provide some proof (even a picture of the internal setup you'd done) then really, why argue? We're just asking you to post some pictures = we all know that's not hard to do.
If you don't have it working internally, that's fine. We can understand that will take some time - but at the very least, lets see some shots of the card in place - at least that alone would sate the naysayers. Myself included. Then we could wait patiently while you work on the software side of things - heck, you might even get some love from some devs if your attitude changes and you get a little more proactive.

If I'm understanding this all, the OP claims to have installed a 3G device that is not identical to the unit fitted to the A501 and hence the software does not work with it?
So if he provided a guide on how he managed to do this, it would enable other people to do the same and then facilitate the development of the kernel and/or software in the ROM's to be able to utilise this 3rd party hardware.
Of course if the cost of the parts and risk of fitting was too high, then most people wouldn't bother and simply purchase the A501 in the first place. If it cost under $50USD you'd probably have quite a few people interested.

[DEV] Google Wallet on S2, it is possible

I've been looking closely at Google Wallet product and I think is fantastic, not just for paying quickly a bill with your phone but also for using data stored as keyring.
Since the S2 does not have an NFC chip, I looked for alternatives and Visa does offers their payWave system through the DeviceFidelity In2Pay sdcard. Yes, you will lose the extra space. Personally I don't use an external sdcard, most of my personal stuff is synced through online services like Google Music, Docs, etc. I contacted DeviceFidelity to ask them how I can get one of their sdcards.
Now, the trick is to get the Wallet app working on S2. It requires many dependent libraries that were recently updated on Nexus S. I was wondering if any of the devs can look into this and create an Update.zip file compatible with S2.
I believe it's technically impossible as the SGS2 doesn't have NFC.
Did you read my OP?
I may wrong here, but I suspect that Samsung put all of the NFC hardware functionality in the NFC-specific battery...everything else is just software and SIM support (SIM support is a big component to securing it).
I though the AT&T version of SGS2 have NFC build in
is it not?
Okay, shame on me....
That's quite interesting, I didn't know such product existed.
I might be wrong, but I believe that Google Wallet probably uses the NFC through standard APIs, so my approach to your idea would be to somehow make this micro-SD NFC card available on Android through standard APIs, as if it were a built-in NFC.
I have no idea on how communication works with this micro-sd card, but the Android part shouldn't be that hard.
Sorry again for not reading everything .
Guys, let me clarify why I say the battery is the key. I have the "Near Field Communications" battery, bought it as a spare out of Korea.
It's thicker and heavier than the "standard" battery, but has the same mAh rating.
Besides, the NFC units don't have ROOM to stick a NFC pad on the inside of the battery cover like the Nexus S, nor do the NFC units have an extra set of contacts for the NFC antenna.
So, it's my strong suspicion that all of the NFC hardware is inside that battery. All of it. With the right firmware and SIM card support, it should be possible to convert any I9100 into an NFC device with that $30 battery.
The problem is, the real key for Google Wallet is the strong carrier-based support. The IMEI and SIM card both need to be validated via the carrier. Kind of doubt the carriers will support "modded" phones that weren't NFC from the factory, as far as trust verification goes.

It does, not the international model. Well, the In2Pay sdcard adds the missing functionality:
DeviceFidelity's patented In2Pay® microSD product will transform smartphones with a memory card slot into an interactive contactless transaction device. The microSD can be issued by a financial institution or mobile network operator as a credit, debit, prepaid or a multiple account digital wallet. The product has earned global recognition as the world's leading plug and play solution that enables user preferred mobile phones to be used for simple wave and go payments at hundreds of thousands of merchants worldwide.

Technically, it adds NFC to the phone. I'm awaiting a reply from DeviceFidelity, let's see what they say. On the other hand, anyone knows where we can get In2Pay in States? I know Visa has an Android app that works with In2Pay and Galaxy S. From there to Google Wallet is a small step. In theory, if I have an In2Pay card I can test it with DeviceFidelity app and use it with Google Wallet.
Since Google released the Wallet app, I'm pretty sure Visa/DeviceFidelity will be interested to merge their efforts and get it working together. There are zillions of phones with microSd cards but no NFC chip.
Personally, as first step, I would be very happy to use the Wallet as data store app.

Why go through all this trouble when you can use an In2Pay card and have it working out of the box?
NFC support was added in Android since 2.3.3 firmware. In 2.3.7, they added Google Wallet as system app.
Nice feature, but it may lead to a double headache when losing your phone... not sure if I want it
They have a PIN to protect the purchases, and a setting preference to enter it every time or remember it. IMO, is faster than paying actually with your credit card and get it cloned by a douche thief.

Where did you buy the battery? Can it be fitted in a non-nfc SGS-II? (contacts at the same place)
I have opened lots of Lithium-ion battery packs for my projects so I wouldn´t mind to crack one open to prove whether NFC hardware is inside the battery (which sound plausible to me as it can be connected to the same I2C line as the battery monitor hardware)

Do you have a picture that shows the NFC logo on it?

Bought it on eBay. It's a direct replacement for my stock battery, works fine, though like I said it's visibly a bit thicker and heavier. Haven't taken a micrometer to it to see how much thicker, but my Mark 1 Eyeball is saying it's roughly 0.75mm thicker.

Thanks for the picture.
See the above explanation posted by another user, it contains another radio antenna.
It would be nice to get nfc on SGII. For a flagship phone, I'm surprised the audio and nfc are lacking. =/
Hopefully the sim card or sd card will fix that. I want nfc on this phone!

I've looked around a bit and found out that it is possible to unbrick the Atrix with JTAG.
I' found this quote on another forum.

So, how is he doing it? And why no one else but he can do it? Why everyone is talking only about nvflash and the SBK problem if there is another possible opportunity to unbrick the Atrix?
While its a breakthrough if he really is unbricking the phones, JTAGing in general requires breaking out a soldering iron and some extra equipment. Its not something the average person can do.

that is very different from the JTAG being talked about here.
Here, JTAG involves creating an interface that allows you to directly flash the memory. Usually a custom cable must be made and connected to testpoints on the PCB.

I think my friend attempted that... He made a factory cable by shortning a couple pins, then we found out that it's impossible to flash... To flash it again you must have a SBK not SBF... Nvidia won't give out their SBK, yet... I don't know whats a PCB though...

Here is a picture of a JTAG interface to a PCB. Note how there are 4 wires soldered to the circuit board. (note: this isn't an Atrix, just an example JTAG)

Found a thread on this on another site, the only useful post was by connexion2005 and states
This will be a difficult model as it uses the Tegra 2 CPU. Plus, the JTAG pins are underneath an EMI shield that is not removable unless a hot air station is used to do so. It will not be an easy repair...

I'm guessing the above picture is a Broadcom based router, and soldering space is much more generous compared to what I'm seeing on the teardown photos for the Atrix. Still though, I wonder if there is an ISP header lurking somewhere in there that may be a bit more accessible.
The main issue is still the lack of ANY supported Tegra 2 models on current equipment. A few boxes offer Tegra 2 support but with no devices listed yet, I can't obtain valuable probing and voltage documentation that I will need to proceed on the Atrix. I was hoping SOMEONE in the industry other than me would have produced this by now. It just goes to show how hard this model is. I've produced support for about 20 other phones and tablets since beginning the Atrix project. I average no more than 10 hours on a PCB before I'm able to map unknown pinouts and communicate with the onboard core and NAND chip. I've got over 50 hours in on the Atrix and I'm only slightly further along now then when I started. All of this is due to a lack of ANY info though. If I just had schematics telling me which set of pinouts were the JTAG pins along with individual pin labeling, this solution would be live within a week most likely. I do have plans to remove the Tegra 2 CPU from the board in hopes of directly tracing pinouts to external locations that way as some Tegra 2 CPU pinouts are available.
IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THIS INFO, YOU WOULD BE SAVING 1000'S OF PHONES BY MAKING IT AVAILABLE AND PAVING A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR TEGRA 2 JTAG IN THE FUTURE AS IT'S BECOMING QUITE POPULAR IN CURRENT HANDSETS AND TABLETS. FEEL FREE TO PM ME IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO REMAIN ANONYMOUS.

Are you able to get into RSD or fastboot mode?
if you can, all is not lost yet
i have ort-jtag and have fixed lots of devices and contributed a few. i believe tegra2 is supported so i would just need a donor board to start testing. i live in dom. rep.

Help help help, Atrix is Hard Brick
So I found out the best way to un-brick a phone... it's simple as building a Dev Cable. I have tested this three times already on my Moto Atrix and every time I have been able to reload the firmware with RSD.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050624
So in a nutshell the best way to do it is to tear apart a micro USB cable. I had to go through four to make one working one, since my soldering skills suck, and run a wire from the 1 pin (which is the 5V) to the 4 pin (which has nothing connected to it), by doing this you're adding 5V to the 4 pin and VIOLA! the phone is able to be powered during a soft brick.... (my bad, I said hard before, didn't realize my mistake till now).
Micro USB pin layout here:
http://www.kineteka.com/microusb-b.aspx
Here's a little more in depth post on it:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-labs/146492-how-why-make-your-own-motorola-factory-cable.html
I'll see about having a post on how to make a factory cable here up this weekend, I have to take snapshots on my next cable build.
Maybe those with a bricked phone can try this and tell us your results.
Hold on, what kind of bricks are you solving this way?

Well right now it works on a soft brick, I'll be trying it on which I believe is a hard brick...:
Code:
0x1000
Entering NVFlash recovery mode
Battery is too low to flash
I'll test it a few times to see if its working correctly.

1. Introduction
Since Google announced the Nexus4 (LG), the entire worlds speak and write about that Phone.
Unfortunately, the Nexus4 is a rare phone.
It may be in stock in some countries, but in my country (France) it is impossible to get it for a cheap Price.
During that time other “Chinese” devices make their apparition.
These devices may be even cheaper and more powerful than the Nexus4.
At the beginning, I was thinking to replace my Galaxy Nexus with a Nexus 4, but one post on Google+, that complains about the poor camera quality and the constant out of stock status for the French play store made me change my mind.
So I turn to the xiaomi MI2, a smartphone with nearby the same characteristics as the Nexus4, witch runs into MIUI.
For these not knowing what here are the main specs :
- 2GB of RAM
- a quad core CPU at 1.5Ghz
- a 2000mAh removable battery
- a powerful 3D chip capable of running all latest android games
- a 4.3” display, with even more PPI than the iPhone5 !
- no sd slot
- Normal simcard slot
This Chinese phone, made by xiaomi ( the same that created the MIUI Rom) is sold in China for 1999 Yuans (about 245€ )
Unfortunately, xiaomi does not sell worldwide, so you need to buy this phone at other place, where it will naturally cost a little more.
We can find the 16GB version for 300€.
Other website who make even more money with this device propose it for 350-400€.
I bought this device on one of the cheapest website I found: ibuygou
If you wish to buy it there, the best advise I can give you, is to buy it using PayPal.
First the euro change is better, and second, well PayPal is secure, you have 45 days to make a complaint (for example if it was lost or damage during the order, or if you don't get the product you ordered)
I bought the 32GB version, it cost me 369€ with DHL delivery (so the same price as a 16GB Nexus 4)
One interesting thing to know: the package is very resistant, you can also find videos where two people are standing on it, without breaking it content! I tried it (without the phone in ^^) and indeed the package did not break. So the phone is ready for a long transport, nothing can happen ^^.
Because this is an import, on some country you may need to pay Taxes (it was the case in France). This cost me 14€.
Warning: it may cost a lot more, if the customs checks the content of the package.
Indeed a lot of Chinese Website declares less than the real price. This way YOU pay less taxes, and the delivery man is not attempt to lost the package for his own business ^^
In some countries, if the package is a gift, the customs may not make you pay (I never saw this for my orders, but well I may be possible ^^ )
In France, even a gift with a love message on it, needs to pay taxes. At least at DHL ^^
When I saw the package I thought: holly crap, they scam me with style :/

But no, they didn’t, I really received an original MI2 with two gifts: a back cover and an OTG cable (that was really nice ^^ )
As you can see on the package, it is a 32GB Version (yes the phones says that too ^^ )
The phone is really protected, there is even a transparent paper with some Chinese advices on it. I guess it is for telling what the buttons does… well even without knowing Chinese I find this out ^^
Here are the charger (US/Chinese) and the USB Cable (also very well pack)
The free OTG cable gift
And here the blue back cover. I prefer the white one, but it is glossy, so you will see the fingerprints on it, and I hate that.. So in use the blue one
Here you see what it looks like from the side
The orange 2000mAh battery (you can choose the colour of replacement battery, but I don’t know why… you never see the battery of a phone ^^ )
One thing that surprised me: charging the phone, when it was turned off shows the battery percentage level. That’s cool
Don’t take care of the dust, it was only visible because of the flash from my camera. I never saw Dust on it with my eyes ^^
2 Possible weakness or strengths
a) good performances
The first owners of this phone made a lot of benchmarks. And MI2 is much better than the top selling android phone: the galaxy S3.
For info, I made a simple Antutu test, without any customisation, tweaks or overclocking. And I get more than 21 000 points
At normal use, it react really fast, there is no slowness
B) an amazing screen for a really simple usage
Some people may say that a 4.3” display is too small, I think it is the best size to be used with one hand, without needing giant hand or to do finger gymnastic
On my galaxy nexus, I could do everything with one hand, but in some cases I needed to change the phone position do everything with my thumb and in this other position, the phone is not firmly in hand, so this could be dangerous if you don’t stay focused
For the difference between 4.3 and 4.65” it is really MINIMAL. Indeed, the MI2 has all its content on 4.3”, whereas the Nexus has the soft keys in the 4.65”.
Until some rarely apps that run full screen, every app on the nexus will run on a 4.37” surface. So the Nexus has only a really small advantage of 0.07”.
Yet, the MI2 fit better in the hand, because it has less borders than the Nexus.
I went from a phone measuring 135.5x67mm to a phone that measure 125x63mm.
The MI2 is 1 cm less height and almost a half cm less wide. So some actions became easier.
The screen is also a lot better, because of the PPI value. The same image looks a lot sharper on the MI2.
C) a phone not so thin as other rivals
Another possible weakness is the thickness. Indeed the MI2 is not the thinnest of all phones. I was a bit afraid that it might be too big (it is almost as big as the bottom part of the galaxy nexus).
In the end this does not disturb me, the phone fit in the hand, and it does not looks like a BIG FAT phone. Sure with 1 or 2 mm less it would looks even more amazing, but this would be at the cost of a lower battery . Indeed the more a phone is thin, the less place is left for the battery. Less place for battery => less battery capacity.
D) MIUI
This phone is running Android, but not stock Android! It is running MIUI (a graphical change that may look a little more like iOS)
It has also a dual Boot (you need to choose it in the recovery)… So if you break you first boot, you can use the second one. I tried it, but it seams that I have some kind of conflict (maybe because system one is up to date French and system two is the default Chinese rom… maybe they both need to have the same language or version)
I admit that a always installed MIUI on my phones, so having one that came out with it was a good point for me. This phone is like a Nexus for MIUI ^^
But this is like everything, you like it or not… I can’t choose for you
Some people will say: MIUI = iOS on android, that is not true..
MIUI is a graphical evolution, with some nice features.
If you look at Android 4.2, you may noticed that Google introduced some icons in the notification bar for setting Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and so on… Most ROMS increase the ability to toggle on click or go to the settings on long click… this kind of feature exists on MIUI since android 2.3 !
3 : Testing some stuffs
On internet there are a lot of review or test for the MI2, but most of them only test the performance and nothing else . So I’ll test some useful points :
The audio
The GPS
The Camera
I’m not a specialist in these domains, but I had a few android phones (every time high end models) and I must admit, that I was never 100% happy with them
If there is ONE phone that was a real peace of crap, it was the HTC Desire HD!
The audio level is like a buzzer. The music was awful. I had a lot of trouble hearing what my contacts told me, this was even worse if you were in your car or a noisy environment.
The GPS was REALLY the worse I ever had, the precision was bad, it jumps from street to street and needed a lot time for the fix. Telling me to turn left 30 meters AFTER I should turn…
Having a high end smartphone, that is not good in these 3 points, is really not a high end one!
A) The audio
I replaced my HTC Desire HD with a Galaxy Nexus, it was better, but yet not was I was searching for.
On Galaxy Nexus you need to install a mod or software to boost the volume because it is too low by default.
The MI2 is doing A LOT better at this point. You can play a movie with volume max and the full room will hear it The GPS vocal navigation is clearly audible even in a noisy car.
There are still phones that does even better (like the Sony Ericson neo my wife uses, but this one is really too loud ^^ )
The Dolby equaliser of the MI2 has nice effects and you direct hear the difference.
Calling sound is also super clear. Even with noise you hear your contact well.
The only little weakness could be the vibrate level. I think it is a little too low.
B) the Camera
The software part surprised me, (ok I was used of the stock camera, so it was not difficult to do something that looks better). Here everything is clear and on the right place, there are a lot of settings also.
The photo and video quality on low light is a lot better than my galaxy nexus. Indeed; the
Galaxy Nexus does good pictures, but only by daylight. If it is a little dark, or if the light is artificial, the quality decreases fast.
Here are two picture of my dog (click on picture to see the full size picture)
In normal mode:
In HDR mode:
Unfortunately it is raining so I can’t test good daylight picture. I May add them later if the sun will shine again ^^
The video is also excellent. You can save 1080p videos and you can also set 90images per seconds (useful when you film something that moves)
C) the GPS
As most of the latest high-end devices, the MI2 is also compatible with Glanoss (the Russian GPS). This should help having faster and better GPS performance (indeed the more sat your phone sees, the better it can know where you are)
Testing a GPS in a house is … useless
A GPS should find it position (the fix) but also guide you right (not too early and not too late), it should not jump from one street to the other or position you in the middle of nowhere.
People saying that a GPS is amazing because it fix in less than 10 seconds in there room are noobs ! (Yes a lot of people said that the Desire HD had an amazing GPS … whereas a blind could guide you better than this phone! )
So I did a quick ride with my car to test it
I went in my car, turned the GPS and run Cygic (my software)
Fix in less than 2 seconds (my nexus needed more than 1 min, sometimes I also needed to open the window and hand it out to boost the fix time)
But as said fix alone is useless, so I told my GPS to bring me to the nearest town.
It guided me well, not a single error, every order was given on the correct time (not too early or too late).
Then I run GPS Status and GPS Test to know the signal quality and the amount of satellites.
Unfortunately, I did not succeed to do a screenshot for GPS Test ( I was still in my car needing to drive when the fire turn green )
But it find me about 10 green sat that had values between 37 and 42.
For GPS Status I succeeded doing a screenshot: we see directly that it uses a LOT of satellites (so it uses both GPS and Glanoss)
It finds about 21 sats and used between 13-15 of them.
The error precision is 3-5m, whereas my Nexus had 5-10m
If the weather change, I may test it in the forest, but I don’t like going in the forest when it is wet…
D) the OTG Cable
For every tests here, I needed to connect the USB device to the OTG cable first, and then the OTG Cable to the smartphone, other way it did not works :/
Here are some tests I did :
- FAT32 USB stick => works (I may test NTFS and Ext4 in future)
- 2.5” self powered hard drive => did not works, the phone does not give enough power
- Nikon Coolpix S3300 Camera => did not work, maybe the same issue
- USB PS3 controller => it works (the game needs to be compatible)
- USB Keyboard => it works and you can configure the keyboard layout in the menu
- USB Mice => It works a cursor appears on screen
edit from January 11 :
The 6 januray i asked ibuygou if they can make this kind of test (Xperia) :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=F92CvRflk18
The support answered me than i can do this test, and if it break they will send me a new MI2.
Unfortunatly i declined the offer, i did not wish to wait for a new phone ore pay more taxes.
But to MY SURPRISE, ibuygou did this video (they also said my name in it ^^)
here is the video (warning : at the begining there is a screen protection on the phone so don't be afraid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=84z_BIrLlp4
So I hope you find these review useful.
If there is something specific you wish me to test, just ask me
ps: sorry if there are some errors in the text, i'm French and i tried my best to do an English review as good as i could. (if corrections are needed please feel free to pm me the correction so i'll edit this post)
i really like your review.
im hoping to receive my order next week.
can you share more information about battery life, built quality of the phone
Do you use any bumper/case? Its not even gorilla glass, so i kinda afraid about that point.
also, where you order the accessories from?
I want the dark blue panel, and external batt + charger.
the only option is alibaba. but i was looking for something geographically closer so it will arrive faster
and just last mark, to make sure, it uses regular sim card, correct? like in galaxy s2, not s3 (microsim) ?
edit: I just saw you wrote this as one of the points at the start of the post. thank you for clarifying
Testing the battery is something complicated, indeed you need a given procedure that you do on more than one device, so you can compare it.
If i told you i stay 2 days you'll be happy but i may not told you, that during these two days, i didn't use the phone, so only saying that the device stay X hours/days alone without any further information is useless.
the quality is amazing, people that saw the phone (by far) will think it is an iphone5 ^^ (same formfactor)
i'm not using any case or bumper (i may plan to buy one to be sure the phone is well protected)
I don't know if it is gorilla glass or not and i really don't wish to test it, i hope it is... to be sure i may buy a screen protector, but unfortunately, i did not found something cheap right now
the accessories i have, are gift i received from the site i bought it (i gave a link on first post)
the cover was included in their december deal. The OTG cable was a surprise gift
Yes the phone use regular sim (no micro or mini sim)
you're correct about battery life,
my intention was just if it rally feels as 2000mah, comparing to your galaxy nexus, for example
but nevermind
about screen protector, look for nillkin products, i heard they're good and they have both matte and clear screen protectors.
they also have lite & full version, wheres the full has also protection for camera lens
I like the blue cover. its some sort of matte feeling?
nice review

i like your review a lot
in fact i don't know if a screen protector is needed
on chinese xiaomi forum ( http://bbs.xiaomi.cn/thread-4506805-1-1.html ) they said that the MI2 has dragontrail glass (something like gorilla glass, maybe even better)
and when you see how this guy tested his Xperia : http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=F92CvRflk18
unfortunately, i'm not going to do this kind of test on my phone ^^
but if someone send me a MI2, i would be happy to do this test
Thanks for the review alain.
Im going to get a Xiaomi MI-2 32GB from the same site. Hopefully they wont take too long to dispatch it.
so why does xiaomi doesnt say it in the specs?
is it for real?
a lot of company does not say it for gorilla glass too
i don't understand that, for me this is a kind of information, that is as important as the CPU spec
but maybe they don't say it, to prevent people beeing mad if they get a scratch ... after all, its a protection, but it does not protect against everything ...

Good job~
Sadly the MI2 does not have gorilla glass. I found out the hard way - dropped mine and now have a couple of small scratches on the screen
The good news is the screen protector film made them invisible
Watch out where to order from third party Chinese online stores. Many fake MI-2's are sold.

Methinks Gorilla Glass would not have been impervious to the drop either. Supposedly the Mi2 uses Dragontail which is as good or better than Gorilla, and as evidenced by a youtube video circulating around demonstrating Dragontail on a Sony (Ericsson?) phone, I'd have to agree.

Cracking Open - Hisense Sero 7 Pro

Since there isn't a category for this new budget android tablet yet, I'm posing these images here for now. This device was exceptionally easy to open, and could be done using a plastic tool. I started at the top, near the HDMI / USB ports, and just worked my way around the outer edge of the glass bezel until all of the tabs popped free.

I wonder if there are any compatible cameras that could be dropped-in to replace the somewhat mediocre rear camera on this tablet?

The chip that counts is that shiny nvidia tegra 3! Not bad for a $149 tablet. The strange part of this product launch is that none of the walmart employees seem to have been informed of it, it's not on display, and as of today it has been listed as unavailable in all stores, even though most stores still have some of these 'in the back' or most likely in the under-display cabinet. Also, there is no documentation or support (aside from the efforts of the xda-developers community ).
It is a bit scary having all of the ports on the main board, but given the space constraints with having the microsd and hdmi, in addition to micro usb, it makes sense. I personally won't buy a laptop with a power jack soldered directly onto the main board, because it's just nice to know that I can replace a power board if needed - the Nexus 7 is the same in this regard with having the USB port on a separate (easily replaceable) board. I'll be using this as a remote OTG host pc (assuming it can fully support OTG- still waiting for OTG cable), so breaking the USB port doesn't worry me much.
Walmart display units
My local Walmart had the LT and the Pro in their display case, though both were in their boxes. They had lots of LT's on the shelf, but all the PRO's were 'in the back' (they had 15 total).

Same happened to me and the 300t, grabbed a N7 nice tab but was missing some features I thought I could do without, well I couldn't. Gave it to my 13 yr old son and got me the Hisense Sero 7 Pro love it best 129.00 usd I've spent in a while.
Well I picked up mine for 159 I love it. But today I saw another China tab for same price with a 1.6ghz CPU the same one in s3 at the same price.... I wonder how good that is...

Whats the metal plate housing on top of the battery of the Sero 7 pro? Its the one nearest to the ports. My unit gets warm on regular use... Even when its turned off already in this area, it may have a faulty chip there.

From the appearance of the board layout, you may be feeling heat from either the GPS module, or the battery charge/discharge regulators.
I do not know the build of this device, but tracing the cables and the headers, it appears to be either of these.
since the grey cable is the WiFi coax, and ends in a patch antenna near the speakers, the back coaxial cable must be the GPS feed, which routes along the battery (black coaxial cable).
Since even a tiny GPS module draws power, and does so while active, it is not unusual for there to be some heat generated, since these tablets are pretty much sealed shut, there is almost no air circulating about, and this will allow a normally 'cool' device, to become somewhat warm to the touch, as all electronic components do when drawing current. IR².
The antennas are at the bottom. It should be the battery regulator.i disconnected the battery for 2 days and its been 2hrs since I connected it again and the heat issue and battery drain are not happening anymore... Any ideas what happened? Did I reset the chip and solved the issue?

Or any other hardware mod done for this tablet aside from the wireless charging? I am thinking increasing internal memory to 32GB wouldn't be a problem as they have shipped the UK version with 32GB internal memory...
So I see 2 different batteries so far aone marked 14.8wh and mine is marked 4000mah at 3.7v its 14.8wh so they seem to have been mixing and matching or they changed labels
Did anyone notice the zif connector at the top left by cameras? Mine had it its 4 pin I wonder if its serial in/out would make kernel debugging easier if I could get direct access to kmsg and bootloader messages
*edit I see it was noticed earlier can anyone figure out a ribbon cable size to adapt it to a serial interface?
*edit again found everything I need on sparkfun Im ordering some bits to adapt this to my serial break out board and I'll see if I can't get serial access
The Internal Storage...
So for some weird reason (I believe a recent update) caused my Sero 7 Pro tablet to have this Encryption unsuccessful error.
It's the first time I've had this happen to any of my android devices. Luckily I have a recovery on here that's accessible, but no matter how many times I try to put on a different firmware it doesn't work, same problem.
I did find out that the internal sd card is not working now. following the way to take off the back piece from this thread. (Thanks guys!) I''ve noticed that the internal sd card cant be found. I haven't fully taken it apart yet, just took off the back cover. would anyone by any chance know where the internal storage card is located? If I can find that, I'll just replace it with a new card that doesn't have encryption, and install a new rom with it.
Thanks for any suggestions!
Xeven.

First look at the price point, then acknowledge it's an cool little 8" Windows 8.1 Intel Atom device.
Nice screen and battery life is great in normal use. The power drain of running full fletch PC games,
which are fare more complex then Android games, is much higher. Metro games are obviously more
suitable. They are efficient, smaller and modern. Nonetheless some older PC games run surprising well.
It is also possible to install Android(x86 64-bit) or an Linux distribution if you like. And because of its x86
nature and running an full fletch OS, all Windows applications will work fine. With a few exceptions like
running the latest Photoshop CC. This may prove not very productive or efficient on an 8" screen.

And then there is some other info. (Also by ebsbow.)
For those who don't know yet, the differences between Z3735 models are designated with D - E - F or G.
All-in-all the following applies.
Spoiler
Type 4 SoC model D of the Z3735 series seems the best choice for more extended use. The other
versions are streamlined from there. Not just lower memory and functions but the price is very competitive.
They all run at the same core frequency of Quad-1.58Ghz to Dual-1.8Ghz. So the streamlining consists by
reducing the amount of internal hardware components.
Because of this the F version will have the same memory values as D but will effectively run a little bit slower
in real world applications then the latter(..)
For Internet, video, music, casual game, the E and G variants will more then suffice and will come with lower
thermal resistance. Battery life will be longer and the price lower.
D will perform all these task with 2Gb 32Gb (an a 64-bit Windows) a bit better for just an couple of buck more.
Posted pricing seems a bit weird on most Chinese sites, e.g. selling E and G's at the same price as a D.
They should be going for around a 115$ ~ 125$. D's should go for around a 135$ ~ 160$ or less.
Just be sure to look at that when making your choice.

i've been using this tablet for about a month now, it's a really good tablet for its price range, capable of running all kinds of daily apps that i need, a couple of nice games, and the battery life is amazing..
Guy's I am looking to get an 64Gb sd card for this. But it seems not all versions or types do work. It
does support SDXC/SDHC(obviously) 64Gb class 10.
With all those differences on sale it's troublesome to go out and buy one just randomly. Even if they are class brands.
If you could share your experiences on this that would be great. Model, type, brand etc..
Here you can read a review
http://www.retroandroid.com/review-tablet-windows-8-1-voyo-a1-mini/
Very good tablet.
Here you can see some videos:
The bang for the buck is great.
I've owned one of these for over a month now and I love it. I get a whole lot more use out of this than my ASUS TF300T.
I can't say enough good things about it, really. I've put it through it's paces and it hasn't let me down yet. I took the time to turn off eye candy where-ever possibly and applied all the usual gamer tweaks one should do to Windows and extended my battery life out a bit.
I've run Fallout 3 and Skyrim on it. Sure, it takes some concessions on video quality and some mods to reduce memory overhead, but the balance is acceptable and quite enjoyable to play. Not to mention the scads of GoG games that run well on here. Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate play flawlessly.
I see people wanting to run Photoshop on it. I say, why not? While the latest and greatest Photoshop CS may be a bloated whore, Photoshop CS3 runs brilliantly here and gives access to most of the tools in the CS arsenal.
I've been able to run Linux Mint in a VM through VMPlayer, and thanks so some tips from the ASUS T100 guys have been able to at least boot Ubuntu to a terminal in native mode. So a native Linux install is certainly possible, but beyond my expertise at the moment. There is a version of this tablet that comes with Android preinstalled, but Bluestacks runs on it fine, and I've been able to launch some games using ARCHON-APK in Chrome, so I kind of have the best of both worlds there.
Hardware compatibility thusfar has been 100%. I have yet to encounter a peice of hardware that causes grief. My XBOX 360 wireless contoller and dongle work perfect, and the bluetooth is even compatible with Wiimotes, so gaming is easy. Even something as obscure as a Serial Port replicator that I have laying around for running Drivewire with my CoCo II was detected and worked without a hitch.
Like I said I've hit this thing with everything I have got and it hasn't let me down yet. I just hope someone gets a fully functional native Linux install working on it so I can use it as a portable development studio, too.
Any problems with charging?

Hi Ryan,
Do you have any problems using this device when charging? I have one, but when it is plugged in to the mains (NOT trickle charge through USB) the screen registers multiple touches for each single touch, making it unusable.
Thanks,
Jason.
@jcsammut -
I have the same issue, it appears to be bleed off from the charging circuit affecting the capacitance of the touch screen. It only seems to happen for me when the battery is fully charged. It may be the screen protector acting as a capacitor as well, not certain though. I usually will just unplug it and let it drain back down to 25% or so and plug it back in. It doesn't act that way when you charge via USB. I use a Bluetooth mouse 90% of the time so the touchscreen going berserk on a full charge isn't a game-breaker for me, personally.

Strange, it happens for me regardless of charge amount, but it is sometimes intermittent at any charge level - e.g. one second it does it and the next it doesn't.
I agree that it does not do it via USB but the trickle charge is not enough to sustain a charge under normal usage and the battery depletes.
I tend to use a mouse too, but is a bit of a pain when just wanting to use the touch screen. Oh well now I know it affects multiple devices I may stick with it.
Out of interest could it be a shielding issue of the adapter itself? Would a different model help perhaps.
Thanks.

Certainly couldn't hurt to try especially if you have a compatible adapter that has a ground plug. I've never noticed if the plug on the stock adapter is polarized. It might make a difference if the polarity is switched.
I have the same thing around 80% when the battery is charging. Only horizontally.
I seem to remember reading something about an little adapter thingy to add to the charger tip.

Any idea what the 'little adapter thingy' is?
I am trying to find an alternative power supply, but everyone seems to offer a 9v 2a adapter with a 2.5mm barrel, when this take a 2mm barrel.

No buddy, can't recall. I forgot reading about something regarding this kind of problem before I got the tablet.

you can also try an usb to 2mm cable on an prober usb adapter

Cheers mate, I will try searching for that, as searching google for "2mm in, something magical in between, 2mm out" returned some very 'intersting' results .......magic gold rope anyone?.
Did some research and this touchscreen issue is definitely related to the ungrounded charger supplied by the manufacturer.
Apparently it's a common problem with newer touchscreens because of the push for thinness. It produces EMI interference that causes a "ripple" effect to cross the screen outward from the charging plug. This is why the extra touches always seem to be in-line with your finger. A way to avoid it "temporarily" is to touch the grounded edge of the USB port or other exposed metal surface while using the touchscreen. It puts you on the same ground plane as the device and "mutes" the "ripple" effect.
The cleaner the power from the Mains the less you'll notice this effect. So a quality surge filter will probably help at the plug end.
You could also try one of these.. Which should filter the noise out and "mute" the "ripple."
I think I have one of those barrel filters at my house. I'll try to find it and see if it works for me. Touching the USB port works for sure as I've tried it myself.
Magic gold rope, my basement visitor may appreciate that. Eew. Just kidding guy's!
What I have reckoned so far is that using 1.5a vs 2.0a charge would be beneficial to
lessen the interference when loading. So at this point I suspect using 'a' capacitor,
as already suggested, as the magic part. The extra benefit would be an longer cable!
It would slowdown the loading cycle, but don't see a problem there.
Anyone volunteering to make an schematic?
edit; good find thmagi. didn't see your post there.
