Firmware Upgrade : Wifi Sharing Issue Resolved - Galaxy S II General

Finally Samsung has released the upgrade , and most importantly the wifi sharing bug has been resolved.
Now on switching on the wifi, wifi sharing does not start up, nor does it stay on in the background and hog all the battery life. I am sure my battery is going to last much longer now.
Anyone knows what other bug fixes have been done in this firmware upgrade , other than wifi sharing fix ......
New Kernel Version : 2.6.35.7-19100XWKF3-CL276555 [email protected]#2

What new firmware? When did this come out? Im using an unlocked UK version in the USA, so I rely on the awsome xda community for apks!

I just connected my phone to Kies, and it said an upgrade is available. I installed it...and now no wifi sharing bug.

Version? kf3 isn't new.

hi! is the phone backup recommended? i mean for apps and media contents as well?

I'm on KG2 firmware on Bell Canada and I have the wifi sharing bug.
No new updates currently available through kies.
So annoying

Go flash kg6,kh3 or any newer rom through Odin. I had the same bug on bell and this issue forced me to flash a generic rom through Odin.

When you update through kies, it will prompt you on whether to backup everything before beginning the update, and then automatically restore all the settings if necessary after the update. Very simple.

[Q] Galaxy TAB firmware official upgrade to JJ7

Hi All,
I bought my galaxy tab yesterday from Currys UK. I have been a very happy user of HTC Desire and now i thought to move to bigger screen.
Today, when I connected my phone using Samsung Kies, it informed that there are new firmware (*JJ7) available for tab. My tab currently has firmware *JJ3. I am currently installing the upgrade using Kies but its kindda slow.
Few questions --
1. Firmware upgrade - I think it is same as we say ROM upgrade in HTC phones. Right?
2. In Desire, I used to get OTA (Over the air) upgrade. Is this not the case in Samsung? Will I always get updates via PC? if yes then what a shame?
3. Not sure what benefit I am gonna get after firmware upgrade but its good to be on latest official version.
Thanks in advance.

With the unofficial JM6 ROM (see the other discussion thread in this forum), there is a "Software Update" service that runs in the background, presumably to check for the latest available version of vendor-provided features...or maybe it checks for the latest Samsung stuff...not sure.
Let us know how it goes with the official firmware update.

Hi,
After firmware upgrade, i dont see any major difference, in fact i just used my new galaxy tab for few hrs so probably i would not be able to make a judgement what's the difference.
But its working very well. If you have any specific question then i can try to answer that.
One thing, I am using Google talk on my tab, messages are not in proper sorted order as per date. It's been sorted as per person which means I am getting all the other side messages on the top.
Could you please help me to figure out how can i rectify it or Do I need to upgrade my Gtalk App. Unfortunatly I am not getting this app in Mrket place.
Regards,
JM
Can you do me a favour, open your browser and go to the UK's PeakFM web site and see if you can view the page, click on any of the boxed links and navigate correctly through the web site.
I am finding certain web sites such as this and others are not being displayed correctly, so if the update has cured that I would jump at upgrading.
Thanks.

Have you seen the size of the firmware packages for the tab? Many people won't be too keen on downloading around 300MB over their cell connection.
Having to plug it into the PC once every few months is not that much of a chore.

No-one has yet to find an official changelog for any of the versions of the firmware, Samsung is unlikely to release this information to the public.

No, all my apps are intact after applying the update.
I haven't seen the email app crash since the update (it used to crash reliably every 2nd time) and I haven't had the camera preview messed up either. Of course either of these might just be luck, but here's hoping.

I just updated the firmware.
All the bugs that i know of is still there, the browser lag, the video player thumbnail generation lag, etc.
Don't know what has been fixed here, unless i can see a changelog and test it.
My phone version has been updated from J16 to JJ1.
PDA JJ1 to JK3.
EDIT: The Gallery Loading is faster...ie. it generates the thumbnails almost instantly now. I have around 5-8 folders with over 1 GB of images inside.

That may be the case but Kies is an absolute nightmare.
I also have an SGS and when I applied an upgrade for Froyo on a stock SGS with nothing altered Kies 'bricked' the phone.
Luckily I could still do the 3-Button Recovery so managed to wipe the phone clean and use Odin with the upgrade ROM from samfirmware.com
As such I am no fan of Kies and not looking forward to connecting my Tab to it.
Question to everyone else who has done the upgrade ~ has anyone experienced any difficulties with Kies and the Tab?
I just upgraded also and can't really spot any changes so far. The upgrade did preserve everything, although I had to re-root. Oddly Opera Mobile was crashing a lot also (it hardly ever did prior to the upgrade), but an uninstall and reinstall seems to have fixed that.

How come I don't get the update in kies? It says my device is already running the latest firmware. I'm on an unlocked and unbranded euro version of the tab.

It's not because you've rooted anyway because I've done that and I got the update. Perhaps you really are already on the latest? My Tab is an unlocked one bought in the UK on the day of release and was running JJ3 originally.
It would appear the update is for JJ users as in JJ3 to JJ7.

On HTC phones, you are notified that an update is available for download, and then advised that it may be better to switch to WiFi before downloading.

Try telling that to someone who is running OS/X or Linux!
Yes, I know you can use a VM, but:
a) That *is* a chore!
b) You need to have a Windows license, which some people might not legally have.
EDIT: I see there is a Kies Mini now for OS/X users!
OTA is definitely the way to go IMHO.

Couldn't agree more with you Dave.... Kies is an absolute nightmare. Besides the insane method Samsung use, you connect and take a chance it does not brick your phone.

I'm using OSX at the moment and am fine with having to boot into my win7 partition or use my WinXP VM if need be.
In order to download a 300MB file OTA, i'd either need to change my data plan to one that costs me an extra $30/month, or pay 10c/mb for data beyond my current cap. Not everywhere has good cellular data plans, although Europe, North America and Asis, would encompass >95% of their target market, so I can't imagine they'd care too much.
Obviously they _should_ support OSX users as it's a reasonable sized market, although probably most OSX users would be more likely to get an iPad as they're already suckling at the teat of Jobs. It's simply a USB/COM gateway, basically just an adb redirect, so other than the UI it's not like it's complicated for them to implement as most of the framework already exists in the SDK.

For some reason my says that already has the latest version which is 2.0.0.11044_11. Well it is not for some reason, it is for Kies reason..
Done the update and plugged in my phone (KE7) on the off chance of a further firmware upgrade but still states it's the latest one.
But it did connect to the phone right away which normally never happens.
Updated Kies but no new firmware.
In the SGS days (not that long ago) a new version of Kies was often just a few days before some nice new firmware releases.
Keeping the hope up, but we'll see..........

2.3.4 does not require a kies update for it to be downloaded or installed. Kies uses a specific protocol to communicate with your phone. Update is usually to add features or speed up things, improvements etc.

I thought that for those like me still not ready to root their devices can only update to 2.3.4 can only do so through Kies or go to a Samsung service center, or is there any other means?
My Kies bugs out every time I try to update, says the internet is not connected.
It also downloads more files than it is expected whilst retrying internet connection (eg. 54000/40000 KB).
Can anyone post a link to directly download the install file instead of using the update feature?

I'm on stock currently myself. You don't need Odin for custom ROMs, there's plenty of stock already on samfirmware.com.
Kies already bricked my i9000m twice using Samsung official firmware. Samsung's response was that the firmware wasn't available for my area yet. I told them that Kies gave me the green light, and their response was still the FW wasn't approved yet. That was a PITA to get resolved.
Samfirmware.com has firmwares (including stock) that many have tried, and Odin takes the tedious waiting out too. Between waiting and 2 bricked phones from Kies, I am done with Kies forever!...

Hmm, Samfirmwares may be stock but not necessarily official releases. I don't trust Kies although I've never had a really bad experience using it. I just want OTA updates like I used to have on my Nokia 4 years ago!

There's a few that are 100% official. The rest are stock waiting for carriers to chop them up.
Honestly the only thing that you are waiting for is carrier bloatware.
BTW I used to be a Nokia e71/72 user myself...

Luckily mine is carrier-free. Discerning the "final official" roms and installing them whilst retaining my current set up is what concerns me. Like I said, petitioning for OTA updates.
It would be best to work like google chrome browser auto update. It downloads the update, and next time you start it it installs. No questions asked... no time wasted... Always the newest firmware. OTA of course. It could work on android. Downloads update, waits for restart. When restarted if battery >60% installs. Piece of cake...

Lol
Samfireware.com does carry stock Samsung roms (it is not an official Samsung site) and they aren't official releases.
I have the 2.3.5 update from there and it is noticably quicker that the official 2.3.3. That being said kies detects the new version and says that its not official and that the upgrade service is not available for non-official versions. If samsung release an official update I might flash back to and older version then update through kies if I really had to which is no drama.

The instructions were posted just after the last official update in August. Hopefully a sign that OTA is on the way.

Guys, i need some help/tips about updating my Firmware. I have a samsumsung GT-I9000 with Android 2.2 (Froyo). I know that there is a newer version (2.3 or so).
I downloaded Samsung Kies but on the general information screen it doesn´t give me the option to update the firmware version, it is only showing me my firmware version (not the latest version available, neither the chance of updaiting it).
I have tryed to install the Kies in differents PCs and I had the same issue.
My GF has a Samsung 5500 (Samsung Galaxy Europe) with Android 2.1, and we had the same problem trying to (or not having the chance to) update the firmware.
My first option is to try with Kies as it is an official source (I don´t want to have troubles with the warranty), but if it is not possible let me know any other way to update our phones.
I will really appreciate any help.
Cheers,
It sounds as if your SGS is tied to a carrier, in which case you are dependent on them for their version of the upgrade.
I would contact them first. If you get no joy there your only option is to "unlock" the phone from that carrier, thus enabling Kies to give you the generic upgrade.
This is what I did. I was locked to o2, here in the UK. Upon unlocking I get the latest generic update via Kies as soon as it becomes available, which is months before o2.

Its an unlocked phone from p4u unbranded and I'm on three, but theres no sim in the phone when I've connected. I've not downloaded it yet its still plugged in an showing. I didn't really want to be first trying it because my phone has no problems and I don't want to lose the 5x4 icon setup unless I'm forced too and I don't know whether this will do that to my phone. By the way its never been upgraded yet from its original rom of KE7 KE4 KD1.
Firstly Kies wont remove any of your apps/settings, if you have rooted the phone you will lose this. It sounds like you are being offered the upgrade to 2.3.4 which has been out a while. 2.3.5 is the one we are waiting on which is a different KI4.
Is there anyway I can check for you without going through with the full upgrade, the other day I handled a new galaxy w in p4u and that had 2.3.5 in it I took a photo of it, every write up and comment on that phone says 2.3.3. Lets hope things have moved on, but as I said in op didn't really want to try it first.
See attached
Thank you. I've been reading about the Kl4 in the discussion thread thats not officially out , I don't supposed you would care to comment on whether its worth my upgrading, whats the balance of losses and gains you find in this release as apposed to the one I've got.
It's up to you whether you want to upgrade the fw, if you're on 2.3.3 I would do it, we could new waiting a while for Samsung to release 2.3.5 on kies for unbranded phones.

Not sure if it's just me, but I noticed there are still some wifi issues with DXLP8.
WIFI works very well in general. However, if I left the tablet idle for long period of time, eg an hour. Then I try to use it again, I would not be able to browse internet even though the WIFI status shows connected. I have to toggle off the WIFI and reconnect to get it back to work.
Did any one experience similar problem?
Thanks
