Web video encoding - Epic 4G General

I'm building a small home media server, instead of buying a prepackaged solution, I prefer the challenge and reward. But I'm having a hell of a time getting the encoding of video down. I can encode most videos in my library in about 45 minutes each, to what ever format I want but I can't figure out the best format to use.
I'd prefer to stick with an open format, theroa or webm, but neither of those seem to work across all of my mobile devices.
Supposedly gingerbread allowed webm to work, but that doesn't seem to be the case on my epic, and the xooms honey comb doesn't appear to support it. Way to go Google for supporting your own container format.
Anyone have any luck with any particular formats? Streaming wise?
I'd hate to go h264 because I prefer to support everything open, and I really won't be using HD because most of my stuff is ripped off of DVD not bluray and I don't necisarily want to eat up the bandwidth over 3g when I'm not streaming from home. Especially if my ISP takes notice that I'm running so much up stream traffic, and find out I do have a webserver running.

Also I shouldnmention I prefer to stay away from having to use flash, an html5 video tag is what I am aiming for.

Just a question, what media server software are you running?

Well, depending on the type of server structure and video player that you are using to give your videos playback. If you add some sort of support for DivX's web-based player, you may be able to let users (off their computers) stream pure MKV files. That would save you a lot of space as it is a container similar to WebM and Theora only much more efficient.
However, if you need something simple, you could always go the alternative of H.264, X.264 is an even more compressed .mp4 file that retains a very clean output for quality trade-off. Spend some time here:
1. http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/gknot-main6.htm
2. http://mewiki.project357.com/wiki/X264_Settings
These are small guides, but they are a step in the right direction.
Do some research and see where you can get. When you refine the trick to encoding in this format you can be looking at proper encodes at nearly <2mb/minute. With something that isn't "HD" you'll be able to easily get a clean (or at least acceptable) encode with bitrates well below 1,000 kbps.

Thanks for the links. For the time being I've oped to encode h264/mp4. I was really hoping for webm, but it looks as though I don't have much of an option. Forcing my self to stay confined to a plain html5 video tag has proved limiting, low over head, but limiting.
Media is encoding now, it'll be a day or three or four before its all done, but so far as proved worth while. Though I have found I may need a bit more horse power to service multiple streams on the iis server.

Good batch video converter? I'm using WinFF but I can't find the right preset

Handbrake works but it's impossible to use for converting lots of videos.
I like WinFF (ffmpeg front end) and it's easy but I can't find a preset that doesn't make the audio go out of sync. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
How many videos are you trying to convert? I have used Handbrake to convert about 10 videos over night before without any issues.

Never used that encoder I use MeGUI it does it all and fast I've got all kinds of XviD rips from x264 BRRips that look great on my tv and vibrant there all about 2 gigs.
I use AnyVideo Converter. It has several presets specifically for Android, and works well with multi-core CPU's to convert rather quickly. Never had a problem, it even made good videos for my old MT3G.

With handbrake and megui you have to add each file one by one to a queue. If I want to convert 20 or 40 files that's annoying.
Can you guys tell me what ffdshow parameters you are running with?

im not sure im new at adding videos to android devices but if you download the software theres a manual in pdf form that explains everything it can do.
I have about 60 DVD's ripped so far using this same program. One thing to note though, The movies are a bit grainy when you do the preset Xoom setting. You might want to go into video settings and up the bitrate to 1750 or so if you really want your movie to look amazing on the Xoom.
Avatar at 1000 bitrate = meh
Avatar at 1750 bitrate = nice
Also you'll probably want to get AnyDVD. It breaks encryption and copy protection so that you can *ahem* backup your disks. It even fixes the disks that try to use false headers and what not to make the movie play out of order when you rip it. I've been using the 21 day trial version myself.
My first try at converting a 720p mkv high profile video is ok. It is not full screen like the youtube video indicates using the Xoom setting. The sound however is much louder compared to using the free handbrake application.
The application itself needs some work on the GUI. It is not very intuitive. Also, when it is running, it causes my computer to not be as responsive. Handbrake does not do that.
This is only my first test so results may vary with other files I try.
if you want better quality next to the xoom preset click modify and you can change the resolution and bitrate from a 1000 to 1750 like the previous post said. if a dvd has 2 versions there will be 2 different movies at the top one is for widescreen and 1 for fullscreen

I did not do any dvd ripping but converted 720p mkv files into xoom format using catalyst. Quality was good and the file size dropped from 4.5gb to 1.2. No sync or stuttering issues. Really impressed.
Down side is it took the length of the movie to convert and like one poster said it lags my whole PC down.

Most common (non-DRM) video files, including MKV and ISOs. Just drag&drop them onto the program. If you drag folders, it will filter out the video files. Some MKVs might give some problems due to either having compressed-headers headers enabled (a recent change in MakeMKV, enable "fixmkv" setting in Global Settings > Advanced), or due to an unsupported (at the moment) audio format (truHD/e-ac3). Depending on the source of your MKV's most work though.

If you test-play your files on your PC, don't use Windows Media Player. WMP has sync-issues with MP4 files. if you use Quicktime or VLC, they will play fine.
As for the PC-slowdown, the conversion to h264 video is quite processor-intensive, and the software uses whatever power it can find. The faster the processor, the faster the conversions. If you use a single-core/cpu system, conversions tend to run at about the same speed as the length of the movie (select the xoom-fast profile to speed it up), but if you have a nice Core i7 Quad or 6-core, you can rip a 2 hour movie in about 20 minutes.

Why not provide an option to lower the priority? It sounds like the application is only usable now if you queue something up to run overnight.

[Q] Convert video for Iconia

Hi guys, it's about a week that i'm tring to create a flawlessy working HD video for the Iconia, i've tried a lot of config but no one works, so i tried with Up downloaded from iTunes and it works like a charm, with a very good quality in about 4GB with the native Honeycomb player. So i take my Tron Legacy BluRay and tried to create a MP4 with HandBrake with AppleTV 2 preset but when i play it with every player i've got on my tab (native, Mobo, VPlayer, RockPlayer, Vital and Nemo) it's like fast forwarding and i cant slow it down to normal speed. With MediaInfo i compare the downloaded Up m4a and my rip of Tron, they look the same (same ref frames, same b-frame and all) but the iTunes one works, mine not. Obviously on PC everything it's ok.
So guys, what do you use to convert your videos to playback on Iconia?
I took the advice from this post and was able to get a 720p conversion using Handbrake from a 1080p mp4 rip of Shaun of the Dead, using Loose Animorphic setting and 1280 Picture width. You have to go to the Advanced tab and set Maximum B-Frames to 0 (from default 2?) and Preferences/General/Output Files, uncheck "'Use iPod /iTunes friendly (.m4v) file extension for MP4'". Also a good idea to make sure the Audio's set to no more than 160kbps, I think that's the Honeycomb maximum audio rate for video files atm.
Oh, the 720p file ended up being ~2GB, looks good but not great picture (occasional blur artifacting on hard scene transitions.)
Thanks, did you use AppleTV preset?
I'm going to try with your settings (i thought i used the same, but probably i'm wrong), tomorrow morning i'm coming back to update.
I've been using this preset: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVBpeQNWbEQ and have had no problems
That preset works perfect.. Thanks!
I use normal and no b-frames and i got a playable videos but very choppy. I'm going to try that present, thanks Bootup.
I've used HandBrakeCLI under Linux to convert HD MKVs for use on my Iconia. It definitely works ok for 720p video but not yet tried any 1080p.
I've written a couple of scripts that convert a single mkv file and also a directory full of mkv files, they can be downloaded here: http://db.tt/Fq7knIr
Usage is simply: "mkv2iconia.sh inputfile.mkv" or just "bulkmkv2iconia.sh" for a full directory. They will both produce "inputfile.mp4" that can be played via hardware accelerated system player
Requirements: a linux command line, HandBrakeCLI, and a lot of time/patience.
Hope this is useful to someone.

I'll give it a try if the preset posted before wont work for my rip of Tron Legacy.
I've been using a Windows application called DVD Catalyst 4 (tools4movies.com) to convert video. It had a lot of buzz about it on various forums, but I was skeptical. But it has a group of settings specifically for the Acer A500 (fast, HQ, 1080p) which make it easy to use and the new beta version works with DVDs or Blu-Rays (even copy protected ones if you have AnyDVD installed). I've done a few movies as tests and it seems to work very well.
And I was a user of Handbrake and RipBot264 previously.
I'm ripping a DVD now to try this process. It's getting good feedback, but I'll be able to decide for myself once I get it on tab. http://www.androidtablets.net/forum...rum/14292-ripping-videos-dvd-acer-solved.html
Update: Just transferred the movie onto my tab (Tangled @1.05 GB) and all I can say is wow!! You guys definitely must give this a try.
@DJ_Jedi
At the risk of sounding stupid, how are you using videos downloaded from iTunes on your Acer? I thought they were DRM protected.
Do all of your videos that you have encoded come out a bit choppy? Like skipping frames all the time.

I just take it, renamed to .mp4 and copy into my Movies folder, it said "Could not work, copy anyway?" i said yes and it works.
But great news guys, used the Xoom preset posted on the previous page and it works great! Picture quality it's not the best, a little bit lower than on my previous tries, but definitely good, i'm gonna try 2 ref frames and target size 4GB and not avg bitrate 3500.
i use rock player... it plays pretty much every video file

Been using DVD Catalyst for a long time now. I usually rip in a Divx encoded AVI wrapper, but the Iconia Tab d/n support AVI files. So I did a couple rips using the Apple TV HQ HD settings and that is working peachy. I didn't realize it had a specific device profile for the Acer (doh!).
I like this tablet, but the poor media file format support will keep it from being my main entertainment portable go to device. That will remain my Archos 70IT (250GB) for the time being.
I think i'll stick to Handbrake + Xoom Preset downloaded from here, good quality and about 3 hours conversion with a 2.1 dual core mobile CPU, guess how much it takes with an i7, because i'm going to buy a new PC this summer and i'm waver between i7 2600 and new AMD's Bulldozer...

[q] movies on evo

Hey people, i am taking a trip to europe next month and i wanted to watch some movies on the plane to kill some time. Does anyone know how i can download either free movies or paid movies to my evo?
Thanks
Netflix? Megaviewer?
If you own the dvds, you can rip them using PSPVideo9, or whatever number they are now. You will be able to rip and decrypt the DVDs into a viewable format for just about any mobile Device. I hope you got a big card though. They are pretty big depending on the movie.
Piracy aside, this raises a good question. What(if any) converters are people using to get videos into an Evo compatible format? Also, what encoding profiles are you using with said programs?

Any tips on what encoding parameters you're using? I don't really need HD video on my phone, just a decent quality and minimal size. Similar to what a DVDrip is for the "community" small in size, still decent quality (or so i hear)
I have used Bitripper to rip my dvd collection. Each movie ends of being around 1gb give or take and the quality is pretty good.
A good app for simply viewing movies is "Crackle". It has a good quantity of movies to view which are free, as well as the app itself.

Anything over 480p will just be scaled down to the 480p display and look, at best, the same as 480p.

Because it's convenient not to have to transcode 1080p material that one may have in their media library just to watch it on their phone.
I deal with this all the time... I have a huge media server (10TB) with mostly HD content on it these days, because I watch the stuff via CIFS on my HD tv's using the LG BD570 bluray/network player.
I also use CifsManager (see Market) to mount these same shares from my server to easily access my library on my Epic4G around the house. I have ORB set up, but it' considerably less convenient and more cumbersome to use, so I only go that route when I'm away from home.
So, there is a very legitimate usage model where one might want to watch 1080p content on their phone. In addition to the network share (CIFS) method, one might simply want to copy 1080p media from their server to their phone for a trip, and not have to go through the hassle of transcoding.

there's an app called "Emit" on the market, which has server counterparts that will do server-side on-the-fly transcoding for you. The author posted some stuff about it on reddit and it was generally well received, but I haven't tried it out, really. Free version has ads, paid version doesn't.
I download 1080p content all the time, then stream it to my ps3 with an app or copy it over.

No. He's absolutely right. I just downloaded the video and wantes to watch it. Without downscaling or any of that crap. Sometimes you want to do things the easy way. When you get a gs2, the outcome will be same. Same display resolution. Point is, I wanted to watch a damn video at 1080p lol and the hummingbird cpus in these phones can do it. So, back to the original question. Anyone know how to get this done? Without the trolling please? Lol

The ipod touch can watch 720p...how come we can't and our OS is owned by the parent company of youtube!!

My guess is that its disabled to make other phones seem like a better option? Not sure. But its annoying. And these phones are damn capable of it. Considering the power vr540 chip in these phones still kick ass compared to today's standards.

Man, the Epic 4g was gimped from the getgo because of the Evo.
The OG specs for the Galaxy S Pro wouldve stepped all over the EVO. Sprint couldnt have that considering the amount of marketing they put in the evo to just have this random samsung phone come out of nowhere right after they launch their most heavily marketed phone with better specs because then people will be complaining that they paid for the evo and a much better phone comes out right after.
idk. just my theory. i like connecting irrelevant dots
Bump yo

I think you're going to have to be transcoding. If you got this video off of the web I'm willing to wager you're working with a long GOP codec, which is processor intensive. Add in the scaling required (if it's widescreen the 800px width is the limiting factor, not the 480px height) and you're looking at a fairly serious task.
If it's worth anything I can put 24 cores worth of Intel i7 (48 if you count hyperthreading) one one transcode from one RAID-5 to another RAID-5. If I'm going from a codec that's all I frames (like Animation or ProRes) and go to a long GOP codec (like H.264 or some mpeg variant) with scaling and a mild sharpening it takes about 1/2 of real time. For a mobile to decode a long GOP codec and do a similar scale in real time - what took 24 i7 cores half of real time - impresses me. Somehow the Galaxy S II seems to be able to. Rumour has it the Epic Touch is a few weeks out.

I'm a giant newb when it cone to decoding and whatnot. Can you simplify that for me please? Lol the video is the battlefield 3 Caspian border gameplay video. I specifically found it at full 1080 at 60fps. Its about 355mb. I tried rock player and software mode was HORRIBLE lmao about 4-6 frames a sec the video was running at lmao

Have you tried mvideoplayer? Rockplayer only does software decoding. But I don't think it's capable of 1080p60, just 1080p30.
MVideo Player is my pick too. I download tons of anime and it's in 720p and 1080p at times and it somehow magically plays smooth as butter on the Epic with MVideoPlayer and it even shows subtitles correctly with no transcoding. Who has time to transcode stuff ?
I tried mvideoplayer and it won't play that bf3 file lol I think I'm sol. I really want to rip a DVD at full quality to test me screen. Anyone know where I can get some native high quality 720p videos?

Are you sure it is playing 1080p smoothly? Every time I try a 1080p file, no matter the bitrate it will disable hardware encoding, therefore playing choppy. Some 1080p files play OK, but never at the full framerate, at 1.6ghz it is fairly close, but still not 100%.
So far I've had the best luck with MX Video Player. MVideoPlayer works fine, but does not always display subtitles properly, and won't even play 1080p (Sorry, this video cannot be played) most of the time.

I figured I'd revive this thread since a fair amount has changed in the past 14 months. With new (and hopefully better) software decoding files using Android 4.0 and 4.1, 1080p video will at least run on an OG Epic 4G running CM9. However, the frame rate is still laughably low. That said, I was wondering if anyone has come across a configuration (overclocking or otherwise) that allows for a "relatively" smooth 1080p mp4 playback (really, minimal graphics movement, just so long as the audio and video sync). Yes, MX Video Player seems to be the best at running this high-resolution content (having used about 6 video players now), but not even HW+ and/or SW+ decoders can work fast enough.
Any insight is always appreciated.
