[Rumor] HTC EVO Shift 2 - EVO Shift 4G General

I heard a rumor from a guy with a quite reliable source about a bigger Qwerty brother to the Evo Shift 4G coming out late Q3 early Q4 to sprint with a bigger screen, dual-core...and of course that good old reliable and convenient slide-out-keyboard...can anyone chyme in?

If its true than that might be what I upgrade too.

Sounds intriguing. After using Swype for a few weeks I think my next phone may be hardware keyboardless but I'm not sure.
I don't think my wife would go for me buying a new phone outright less than a year after getting my current phone though

You guys know any good people to ask for some specs or a solid confermation on a release timeframe, I don't doubt my source but 2 solid go's are always better than one ;-)

The shift has been pretty successful for HTC from what I've heard. They'd be stupid not to make a 3d shift.

Cool, I'd like to see the specs on it when they're released. I doubt I'll be upgrading any time soon (bought this one outright) but it would be nice if the next time I do upgrade, there will be a newer shift that may be had for inexpensive that'd be at least a year newer than this one.

Didn't the Shift just release in January?

The Epic was released in Q1 of this year along with the rest of the SGS line...and were gettin follow ups in Q3...HTC makes a new phone every week it seems lol, this doesn't come as 2 much of a surprise...Q3 or even Q4

I can confirm this. There is a dual core shift 2 in the works with front facing camera, five row keyboard, nfc, 4.3" display. Source didn't say if it's 3d. Mr blurry cam should have pics sometime after the buzz about the EVO 3D dies down so they can keep the hype going.

That's very reassuring news!, nfc? (What's that) and I'm guessing this would be a holiday Q4 release right?
If this is after the dual-core, super AMOLED HD, 720p screen, 1080p video/photo capture, 1. 5Ghz, 4.0 ice cream, having Nexus Prime release...I'm assuming it should release with ice cream 4.0 also right?

NFC = Near Field Communications aka RFID... scanning tags, cards and such for info. I think this just got support in 2.3

4.3" is too big. I love the current size of the Shift. When will manufacturers realize that not everyone wants a massive brick in their pocket?

I agree except for one point...this only applies to you if we can agree that a comfortable size keyboard is a big selling point of us Qwerty users...ehhem now saying that not everyone wants a massive brick in there pocket is like saying what man doesn't want a massive and at the least good size man member #nohomo...for the application...larger IS better. I know I have a QWERTY because my fingers are too big to comfortably type on an on-screen keyboard especially with long messages and such. At least 4" would be a happy medium...would you concur sir?

Isn't the kingdom supposed to be the next shift? It has a single core processor at 1.2, or 1.4ghz, qHD resolution. And I thought it was a 4" screen? I've read conflicting information. In one thread Toast (I think) mentions it has a slide out KB, and I've seen blog/tech sites report a 4.3" screen, but others correct them saying it's only a 4" screen. Well, it's Q3 now, so we should hear something soon, regardless.

they really should have made it a 4 inch or bigger screen, still still will be a deal breaker for me! but Dual core would be very nice
I saw this and was highly disappointed that the screen wasn't bigger. Hopefully when all the real specs come out it'll make up for it.

Looks like it will be a decent phone, but I had a Hero before my Evo, and a main reason I upgraded is a bigger screen and better processor. Now at least I won't regret buying my Evo when this one comes out. I love the design, feel, and huge screen on the Evo. Plus I don't need a slide out keyboard, speakers or whatever they may invent. But we'll have to see when some more pics come out from this new phone.
My guess is they're marketing this more towards the female population. I can't speak for all of them, but as far as my GF is concerned, she doesn't want a phone the size of the evo. Sounds like a mini-evo would be perfect

Yeah, this is a little underwhelming.. I definitely would not use my available upgrade to get this over my EVO. I don't think this is their next flagship, more like you said, a way to broaden their audience even more.
It does look like a solid phone, just not quite an upgrade from the EVO

Sooo... What's next after the Epic?

I've seen a lot of talk about new phones but is there a successor to the Samsung Epic?
I talked my wife into buying the Epic as well and we love them but we always keep our eyes on that 2 year mark (which is coming up this Summer)... wondering if we are going to stay in place with the Epics or save for something else.
We are particularly fond of the physical keyboard... don't want to jump to a phone without one.
Love reading all the great threads on here... keep up the great info.
s
The EVO 3D seems to have caught the Epic community's eye. The Epic can do nearly everything that the new EVO can, except the Evo has a better CPU (dual core), TV out (hdmi), and it's 3D option.
No top tier phones with keyboards have been announced yet by Sprint. Samsung has created the "Galaxy S II" which could be used to produce an Epic 2 but that is between Samsung & Sprint to decide.
I believe Sprint is releasing a windows phone 7 HTC device with keyboard, but I'm not interested in wp7.
How are you hitting the 2-year mark when the Epic was released last summer?
Dual 1.2ghz processors

Wait...this is Samsung, God forbid they put out an up to date phone.
I know it hasn't been released yet. But I/O is here in what 4 days?
I theorize 3.1 because it will be a merge of the Tablet and Phone branches of Android, and I doubt they would down grade the version number of the tablets. so the number would have to be >=3.1
Yeah the 4.3" screen may be a problem for those looking for an Epic 2. I think it would be absolutely huge. I personally am going for a non-kb device next. After all, the KB on the epic was pretty useless with all the skipped characters which forced me to become comfortable with swype.
I'd be all over the Evo 3D if it had an amoled display. Any phone w/o amoled will need to have very strong contrast levels with very low black's otherwise it will annoy the heck out of my to pay for a phone upgrade with a lesser quality screen.
I figure I'll be on the Epic until November 2012 since they removed the 1 year upgrade from my plan. At that point I may just keep it and flash over to Boost mobile for the uber cheap monthly rates.
I bought my Epic outright... used... I jumped into Sprint service with a blackberry curve... bought an EVO and Epic cash/used... but in excellent shape.
I've got another year before I start to look, everything else will be "obsolete"

I was looking at the evo3d but i am going to wait till the phone is launched first only because i think the phone is going to be locked down alot and i think root will take some time. I will probably be looking at the gsII. I want my amoled screen and 4.3 is an awesome screen size for me. Plus sammy has done pretty good about not locking phones down so far.
I've got till early Fall of next year before I start looking at amazing phones again (just think what they'll have then...lol)
BUT, if I were looking for a new phone, the EVO 3D is definitely the way to go.

Even I am waiting for the Galaxy 2. It's gonna rock!
I'm going to be in heaven if we get Gingerbread or even 2.4 Ice Cream on another version of the Epic 4G with a keyboard and that dual-core 1.2mhz processor, S-AMOLED + display...AND I'm hoping sprint will keep the keyboard on their version...cuase idk where id be for all the long ass E-mails and text messages without some physical buttons to press....and ohh my what the developers would do once they get their hands on that 1.2 dual core...maybe wishfull thinking but can anybody else say 2.0Ghz Overclock....I've already seen the EVO SHIFT 4G OC'D to 1.8 (which I'm thinking about jumping ship towards to be honest if we don't get something new)...I think that would be a realistic expectation.

The Evo 3D sounds cool, and the 3D option is interesting. If anyone has see the Ninteno 3DS, I assume it is similar to the technology the evo will have. The 3DS is cool but if that's what the evo screen looks like in 3D, HTC has some work to do.

[Q] HTC Evo 4g+ to Sprint? What to pick now?

This phone is rumored to go to sprint. Its pretty much the evo3d minus the 3d I guess. 4.3" screen 1 gb ram.
My question is, what would you pick out of the three, Galaxy S II, HTC Evo 4G+, or HTC Evo3D?
Ps. I tried my best to search through the forums looking for a poll like this but the search function was down so I had to do it manually. Sorry if I repeat someone else.

I need keyboard phones so Epic is still my choice..
But if I had to choose out of those 3 it would definitely be Galaxy S II! I mean lets rehash..whats the difference between Evo 4g+ and Evo3d? the 3d and the camera? so end of the day SGS 2 still wipes the floor with both of them...
If Samsung is gonna continue being a good little boy and continuing the same trend that they have going with the original Galaxy S line (a phone for all major carriers with minor differences), then I'm holding out for an SGSII with slide-out keyboard. If they decide not to make one, then screw Samsung I'm going with something else. Dual Core 1gb RAM Epic 2 anyone? And please oh please Samsung wait for Kal-El before popping a Tegra in it. That would make my dreams come true

After having lots of touch screen problems with my epics (a few didn't make it. lol). I would have to say the 4g+. I really like the sensation 4g because there is no 3d. Bring that to Sprint and I'm sold, and unlock the bootloader of course. HTC phones are better built I think. My opinion don't flame. Also the GPS works flawless (stock), and touch screen works awesome. Better than anything I've experience on the Epic.

What about the washed out, frail screen and the crap-ass camera? Yay, I can view a mediocre version of everything at the same speed!!! Party!
I won't give up on great hardware so some weak-ass devs can more easily create a billion useless Roms. Sorry to them if our guys get it right the first time. They make like a hundred flavors of Kool-Aide and I don't buy any of them. I don't understand why people think that more plentiful Roms=better product. That's what we call false equivalencies.
Get an Echo ....
But really GS2 ... It's only decent Dual core i see this year for Sprint.

[Q] Anybody else holding out on upgrading to the 3D

Because sprint might use LTE and WiMAX? If this happens by the end of the, the next Evo that supports both will far surpass the current product.
I already have high hopes for the next Evo.
LTE will start rolling out in Q4 of 2012. There were several reports about that date being solid because the Wimax contract with Clear will end Dec31 2012 and Sprint will be ready to make the switch. This is all based on contract dates and spectrum requests made through FCC by Sprint.
I just picked up the Evo on a new 2 year, but I am going to use the 30 day money back thing to switch up to the Motorola Photon 4G and ride that till the end of my contract. I'll still be in this forum though as my GF and son have the Evo 4G and I will be swapping them out to a better rom once the shipping 2.3.3 is rooted

Remember dates are crazy and that is why they change so much.
And the photon has everything I want. but mainly the wiimote attachment and HDMI mirroring. All the HD games are also really nice.
With my old Vibrant the wiimote would not connect and kinda bummed me with all the games I could play VIA my TV. So the Photon fits what I have been wanting for a long time. Also the dock and productivity apps sound pretty nice as well.
Not gonna hold off for a standard that may or may not come in some undetermined amount of time.
I'm just not upgrading because:
A) I never buy technology when its first been released. I did that one time, Palm Pre. Never again.
B) Full NAND write has not been achieved. I love my AOSP.
C) Samsung's next generation looks promising and the Photon wouldn't be bad if they unlock them bootloaders.

I personally am holding out until it gets rooted with some good support behind it. 4G sucks in my area so it doesnt matter regardless.
Heres to hoping good things come to the EVO4G with the kernel release from HTC. I'm personally holding out to see if that support picks up on the 4G before leaving for the 3D. MikG is holding me out and enjoying the ride.

That hardware would have to step up to be a piece of crap, that's how bad it is.
To those saying the hardware isn't a great improvement would be wrong..its a great improvement ..even after stretching my og EVO to its limits it cannot compare to the 3d out of the box..you may say " what can the 3d do that the og cant" um I'm.not really sure but it just does said things better and smoother and faster..its very noticible with games etc... Those who are holding out due to root...well I understand that..when it is rooted it will be an incredible beast..as far as the photon ..I would rather take my og back..I.dislike MOTOblur ..
I am running my og evo4g with synergy Rom and it is awesome. They incorporated sense 3 into it and I love it. From what I can tell it has made my software basically the same as the 3d. I can't wait to see what the synergy team does with the EVO3d hardware. I'm not due for upgrade til 2012 oct anyway so I'm happy with my synergized EVO til then
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
The 4G is a great phone ..I loved the experience I had with it and miss flashing a new ROM every fee weeks..the devs are fantastic and have kept that thing going strong ...I will always think of my og EVO fondly
Yeah I have both phones and my OG EVO is just fine with synergy. I don't really like the EVO 3d design. Screen seems smaller due to stretching height and taking away width. I also don't like the back cover at all. Seems badly designed. The software seems to be running st a low frame rate also. Doesn't seem like a big upgrade to me. I know Im going to be labeled a troll and tons of retarded pics will be coming but oh well. The 3d seems like a gimmick and its fun for all of an hour. High scores mean nothing to me so please save the quadrant argument. Coming from a older feature phone or even a hero would be an upgrade but from the EVO to 3d, it doesn't make much sense in my opinion. Before I get chewed, this is my opinion. Maybe it will change in the next couple weeks but right now its where I stand. Oh and I didn't have to start a new thread to say this. That's not a shot at the OP either. I just see all the hate on the 3s aide of this site and thought I would add a disclaimer to my statements.
I'll save my upgrade for something different. Sense is getting a little boring.
On day to.day tasks you won't see much of a difference..I mean how much faster can it get..the one thing I will say though is that I feel my 4G is stretched to its limits and that the hardware is getting old..the soc is more than twice as powerful and the.same.can be said of the gpu..I think that eventually the differences between the phones will become apparent . That being said the 3d does have some bugs to work out..one in particular that drives me crazy is when I'm typing...if.u.scroll or touch the screen in anyway it brings up like the edit cut and paste icon..it always happens ..also I can't seem the hit the space key without pressing the period button..those are minor gripes that I'm sure will be worked out
I'm sure the EVO3D will be a total beast once full root is accomplished, I don't doubt that at all, but as is, my fully rooted, custom rom, kernel, and tweaked EVO4G is as fast if not faster in some respects to the stock EVO3D.
Obviously the EVO3D is superior when it comes to gaming and watching flash content, but aside from that, my launcher transitions faster and much smoother than the EVO3D, my browser appears just as fast in general use, apps load just as fast, etc.
The EVO3D is a great phone, don't get me wrong, but until full root is accomplished it is being held back from realizing its true potential.
I read that temp-root has been accomplished though and some have even been able to overclock the processor to 1.8 GHz, which is pretty insane. I'm sure the phone is buttery smooth at those speeds.

Yup Same here... Before I left the 4G, I was on the MiKG 2.2 and that beast was flying which made me really wait a few before getting the EVO3D, but I know hardware wise this 3D will really be a beast once everything is all said and done.

Use a 3D, and you'll see the difference, it's night and day.

Evo to Photon 4g waiting room

Till the photon 4g forums gets set up. I hear its going to be within the week. I figured it couldn't hurt to have a spot where EVO owners like myself who decided to pick up the Photon 4g can discuss there thoughts and comments comparing the 2 phones. so prospective EVO owners who want to switch can see what we think. I know when i was searching for this info before i got mine today, I couldn't find much. I will try to post something of a comparison after i get this thing fully set up and I've had some sleep.
Good luck all and tear this thing up!
Edit: My Sudu-Review.
Picked up my Photon today it's sick, I'm glad i held off on getting the 3d.

Am I the only one that absolutely hates the pentile display? It looks like grainy pixelated garbage... I've played extensively with Evo 3D and have used an Evo 4G for a year, and both of those look much better than the Photon's display... Everything has a checkerboard texture to it. Its awful.
I see what you mean by the pixilation. but my reds and whites are brighter. So i guess its a tradeoff. but in normal day to day use you won't notice the difference. and i love the feel of the gorilla glass its awesome.
Besides the tegra chipset whats the difference between this and the EVO?
I don't think there much difference other than the 3d part

The Photon has 16GB of NAND, the Evo 3D has 4GB.
Different GPU. Different Camera.
The Photon has an encrypted bootloader than may never be unlocked.

Last part is very true. but I'm really hoping they will unlock it. I didn't even bother with the 3d cuz i didn't feel it was an upgrade from the OG Evo. I also couldn't care less for the way HTC did their 3D technology. The photon was appealing for its specs as well as the fact that its a world phone.
So far it feels speedy fast compared to my OG Evo. the photon is a tad thicker but feels better in the hand. Not sure if which phone is heavier but i really love the feel of the photon (did i mention that already). Im still setting up my phone so i can't speak for software yet. But mobile hotspot works great here on 4g...
Took a while for the Atrix to get rooted, but they did it. And Motorola is supposed to do the OTA roll-out unlocked bootloader thing... they just need to hurry it up.
I need to head down to my local Sprint store and start looking at the phones to compare... unfortunately my upgrade isn't until September

Can you provide proof of that claim? Never saw anything about it.
Also, might be a good thing it's for September, by then all the options will be out [Including the Within] and all rooted by then as well.
I guess Motorola is planning on unlocking the bootloader by the end of 2011 (article)
I guess time will tell
I just saw all the specs and whatnot..looks pretty cool..

Eh, I want to believe them because that would mean all phones are going to be unlocked from all Android manufacturers....but.... "starting in late 2011" sounds like...."eh, we'll get around to it...if you don't forget"
Does Evo. 3D have tegra. 2

I do want to point out that most people that are waiting for a new forum go into the general section of the overall forum, not a phone's general forum. Just an fyi.
Also, you may find that some people are already in there. I havent checked though.

Yes but since i am a EVO owner i made this an easy place for other EVO owners who maybe want to upgrade. Shouldn't have to search hard to find other ppl who where in the same boat as them and ask there opinion.
Mods: if this is the wrong place please move thread. Thank you

No, Evo 3D has dual core Snapdragon. Not a lot of phone have adopted the Tegra over Snapdragon or Hummingbird.

Also has:
Firefox Desktop browser
USB host (KB/Mouse, USB storage devices)
Accessories:
Media Dock with IR Remote (think Evo Desktop/Media Center)
Root and custom ROM's aside, the Photon has more functionality than the Evo has after a year of heavy development or the 3D. I love hacking/modding/improving all my stuff but this is the first device that I'm happy with (root and custom ROM's not withstanding) out of the box.

Eh, Motoblur lol.
I'm not saying it doesn't have more to offer than the Original Evo, but I do think that it's all about modifying.
If I can't run AOSP I'm not interested.
I'm heavily leaning towards this new device now. I know the Chef support will be great on the 3D, but the Moto has me interested. I have one upgrade now and another in October. Choices....hmmm.

If this is not a yearly upgrade you can call and have an upgrade reset done for 25 or 45 depending on your account. It gets billed to the account so no upfront cost.
