Can you tell me how to install android on Acer Iconia Tab W500 with Windows 7 by default.I've tried the android-x86 project but the Wi-fi,bluetooth and cameras aren't working. Thanks in advance!
As far as I understand things, the x86 project will probably be about the best you will get. Android doesn't natively support all of your hardware because it isn't standard for android...its standard for Windows.

If you are able to you should return it and purchase the Asus transformer if you are wanting androidand docking station. you won't be able to install honeycomb on it sadly. It would be like trying to install ios or android on my blackberry just as an example.
I am very interested in this as well. The latent power of the AMD C-50 processor is GPU accelerated. I believe that Android on this device will lead to M$ going bye-bye, because Fusion processing is the future!

Not going to happen. You obviously haven't read any of the reviews on the early Win8 versions; it's generally seen as a big improvement over previous versions and it's especially good on mobile devices.

Unless you can code the drivers for those devices yourself then you're out of luck. There is no x86-based Honeycomb Android distribution whatsoever.
Why don't you try Windows 8 Developer Preview? There are several youtube videos showing the W500 running it. From the looks of the videos, I am actually considering picking up one and trying it myself!
It looks good with Windows 8. It even seems possible to switch out the 32GB hard drive for a larger one, if you need more space.
The W500 also seems to run Ubuntu pretty well. So there are a couple of other options that may be better than trying to make the switch to Android.

I agree with this person. If I'd have a W500 I'd like to try and get dual-booting working between some Linux distro and Windows 8. That way you'd get more-or-less the benefits of both worlds and you'd still be able to carry it all along with you.

Get Linux Live USB creator.
Flash the Android X86 iso to an sd card
Boot tablet while holding down the key combo to get into the bios (forgot it, so google it)
Set bios to boot from SD card
Boot SD card and either use the live version, or install it...

Because Android OS, while being fun and all, is an appliance based OS, just like Mac OS or iOS... Where as the x86 architecture Windows, and Linux runs on, and Apple eventually caved in and adopted, is the most capable and developer friendly architecture for real computers... Buying an Android only device is fine if thats all you need/want.. But if you want more out of your device, then this tablet is it.
I have Windows 7, Ubuntu 11.10, and Honeycomb all running on this, with an ISO of x86 Ice Cream Sandwich downloading as I type...

Others may have figured this out already, but when I encountered this problem earlier today, I gave up on dual booting Win8 & Android. Since then, I have been reading the android-x86 thread on code dot google dot com -- see issue 503.
To select between Android & Windows, you have to use the volume control and the windows key... if only I had read this earlier... ;-)

Is there away to do the same from Windows? I have seen some articles on booting from an USB drive and was going to play with the same approach with an SD card.
On a related topic, can Android be installed to and boot from the SD card (i.e., not just installing but actually booting running from the SD card)?
Yes. I can be installed on SD card. I allocated 2048 mb for the android system on the SD card. I have a 32gb sd. I have android 4.0.3 installed and is running smoothly with the exception of minor video glitches, camera, screen rotation, and some graphics demanding apps and games.
this is great to know since i may pick up a w500 tomorrow. the price made me go for it ( free is always good), but the fact that it was a win 7 tab pushes me away from the idea.
just a quick question;
on the android-x86 download page which one is more compatible with the w500? there are so many flavors...
i tried ALL 4 flavors of the isos and my touchscreen didnt work in any of them!
which did you choose?

I'm actually very interested in a win8 tablet with bluestacks running on it. And then dual booting it with ubuntu too. Of course, it all comes down to performance. If it's not smooth, it's not really worth it.

Hi Guys
I like the design and spec of Adam but I would also need proper usability from it. By proper I mean word, excel, usb to Com cables in general Windows 7.
Would it be possible to install Windows 7 on the device and how hard would it be?
I have not see the device in action so does anyone know does it have PC style bios or more like bootloader on smartphones?

That would be hard. Not impossible.
The thing is I doubt anyone will actually waste hundreds of hours to get a worse operating system running.
(I say it's worse because it's not tablet optimized)

Not worse, just heavier because more usable as PC. For me Android is the worse one as yo have no proper apps that make it usable as PC.
As said if I could get ubuntu to run with office on it I would not think about windows 7 but I can not even do that.
Andoid main problem is the same as one on apple ipad it is a OS for phones.
Adam started out as a dual boot Linux/ Android tablet.
Have not heard anything re Linux boot for a while though.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I seen on forum for ink that they have image for ubuntu but still no office on it.
Grr I always loved tablet idea TBH even when they were called slates.
Until late I had my HP TC1100 and was very happy but it is lucking now in performance for win7 and office 2010. Also it is so "used" now that paint is coming off.
Oh well will have to wait for a win7 dedicated tablet.
The operating system has to be ARM based meaning Windows 7 will never work (at least properly).

Well since they patented Windows 7 core to work with Arm in December one would hope that will be overcome. Apparently there will be al ighter version of Win7 for ARM based systems. Hmm we will see but fro now HP Slate 500 is the best bet.
Ubuntu for arm, meego and basicaly any linux distribution that has an arm port could end up on the adam. If you prefer a more desktop like UI plain ubuntu could work, use openoffice.
Most applications written for linux are easily ported to other CPU architectures.

Well if I wanted to use open office I wuld not ask for windows 7 would just go to ubuntu directly. Openoffice suck badly no matter what people say, if you do tons of docs, formatting and scripting in excel you need proper, real office.
Anything else I could deal with on linux just not lack of that.
I know this thread is old, but with Windows 8 (shall work on ARM) on sight, is there any chance to run that on the adam?
I'm asking cuz i'm looking for a tablet that is a) readable in straight sunlight and b) offers at least part-time Windows-capabilities.

Only time will tell for sure. Right now we can't figure that out as there is no ARM version available. Once they make one I'm sure that people will start trying.

No. Windows 7 is currently x86/x64 only (Intel, AMD, Via). The A500 runs Tegra 2 which is an ARM processor.
I don't know about WP7 - It SHOULD be possible. Of course WP7 isn't at all designed for tablets afaik.
Hm its more of like a "look my tablet can do this!" kind of thing lol. Well the iconia only just came out, im sure it and all other honeycomb devices have a very bright future ahead of them =)

Oh believe me they do. Windows 8 is coming next year (hopefully) and it will be installable to ARM equipped devices. This insinuates that by some time next year, we'll have a bigger choice on what to install on these tablets...and the fact that Windows 8 will be geared for ARM, the install will probably be easier than not.
When I was at CES the Acer A500 was dual booted with windows 7 and android honeycomb along with a few other competitors. Anyone have any idea how to do this?
Hu?
Since when you can install win7 on an ARM Cpu.
And why Acer release 2 model A500 and W500
different hardware, different OS....
I don't think that was a Dual boot, but 2 different machine you saw.
I don't think we will have Windows on A500.
Yep it must have been the W500 if it had Win 7 on it... however Windows 8 is supposed to support ARM processors.

Oh you can do so much better than that! Grab PocketCloud from the market, link it to your pc then run it full screen. Haven't used it on my Iconia yet, but it worked awesome on my Nook Color. The look on my buddies face when he saw Win7 on that little thing was amusing to say the least.

When they release the ARM version, hopefully someone here will figure out a way to get it onto our tabs. Since the ARM version will run on everything from cellphones to tablets, I'm pretty sure the A500 will have the hardware to run it. Since the only version of Win8 out is the X86 / X64 developers release version, we will have to wait for the ARM version to see for certain.
I can't imagine that the A500 will not have the capabilities to run win8, whether or not someone will port it over to our tabs is another story altogether.
Well then I cant wait for the ARM version. I have been running the x64 version on my laptop and I havta say its really nice. I really would like to dual boot it on my A500 with android. it just feels like it would be perfect for it.

I guess Android 4 is will come quicker than W8 for Iconia devices.

The "Developers Release" of Win 8 sux as far as the touch screen experience goes compared to Win 7 as of this time. Not sure if you're using it on touchscteen or not. Win 8 is far from release, but if we only believe half the hype, it should not only bring all the platforms together (which is Microsoft's intent), but should be pretty amazing (again, once it's finished).
Maybe it will soon be possible to run android and windows nt nativly at the same time on the SGT!
how? - ReactOS:
http://www.reactos.org/ (if you are going to test it in a virtual machine dont' use the 0.3.14 version of os, use the trunk build version its much much much better)
ReactOS is an open source windows clone and most of the windows applications work on it ! (MS office, opera, ff, ...) the good news is there is an ARM port of ReactOS - Windows RT equivalent:
http://www.reactos.org/wiki/ARM_Port
ReactOS still has problems to work on real hardware because of many different components but on some PC it works very well (it can be targeted to SGT fix the bugs)
The ARM port is able to run on the SGT but there is still a lot of work to do.
Windows will soon release a Office ARM version for winRT and in order to run any windows application on the SGT a recompile is needed.
and about android there is already a port of android that runs native on windowsne emulation no virtual machine !!)
http://mobile.slashdot.org/story/13/...tm_medium=feed
If anyone has any coding skills it would be nice to try to port reactos to the SGT or just to donate to the project with the subject "arm port for SGT"
This runs pretty well even at alpha stage, I tested it in virtualbox in my laptop, and I'll test it on emulator in my SGT soon... they've planned to bring it up to windows 8... hope that everyone interested here will help the fundraising...
I posted this just to keep this thread up, so don't blame me for not saying anything useful...
I think(theory) that it will run very smoothly on SGT, because it only uses 6mb of graphic memory, I tested it with 256mb RAM and 500mb HDD, and it was better than my expectations!
I really recommend all to try it...:good:
While I applause the developers efforts and certainly see potential benefit..I wonder still if it not more practical to remote desktop as thin client using an app like splashtop for full windows desktop usability?

Why you gotta get greedy 5 posts in?
I have 20 US Dollars for the first person that can port even an alpha of this, and an extra 15 USD to anyone who can fix up our Ubuntu port (everything needed to fix the kernel is available in Samsung's ICS kernel). There are just too many sweet things that we get close to but never actually get.
Has there even been any Android based device that has had ReactOS running on it ever?
It sounds like OP is just rambling nonsense and wishful thinking.
The ARM port is able to run on the SGT but there is still a lot of work to do.

What is the basis for this statement? Has someone demonstrated any ReactOS code running on a Tegra 2? Is it simply because someone put up that ARM Port section of the wiki? The ARM CPUs represent a wide range of devices. Just because someone decided to put up a blurb about that doesn't mean we are anywhere close to getting a worth while port of ReactOS running on this device.
Why is there a link to some Slashdot story from 1998?
Perhaps this is the way to go to make this tablet suck less, but I would recommend switching to a windows tablet, either a Rt-based or a x86-based tablet. Back when galaxy tab 2 10.1 came to the stores, I went ahead and got one.
And that was a decision I soon came to regret deeply. Android is simply not comparable to windows, not even on a tablet.
So I went to buy a hp elitepad, running windows 8 pro. This impressed me so much that I also bought an Asus vivotab Rt.
The fact that the elitepad is running x86, means that I now will install virtualbox, and then install android for x86.
And perhaps mac os, windows nt, bsd or Ubuntu. Time will show.
My point here being, it is better to start with a superior os and then install the inferior ones, instead of doing this in reverse.

You really can't compare a weak Tegra 2 processor to a much more powerful Intel processor, based on two totally different architectures, running two totally different OSes, two totally different tablets with entirely different specs... You're comparing a snail to a Toyota sports car.
Try out a Tegra 4 tablet or a Snapdragon 800 tablet... That's some good stuff. Nexus 10 too, Exynos is a beast.
