On stock roms GPS doesn't work without activation; however, on roms such as CyanogenMod you can use GPS without having activated the phone.

Did they really tell you that? When the phone comes new from the factory it isn't activated. I guess they use elven magic to activate it *eyeroll* Verizon reps are serious bullsh!t artists.

That figures. Of course I'd take CM over stock any day.

Yes they are. In fact they even told me I couldn't buy my new phone "unless it was connected to a phone number and their data package".

I want to do the same thing, however, when I turn my DE-ACTIVATED Droid X on the only option I get is "Welcome to Droid X, Touch thr Android to Begin" and then it wants to call Verizon to get the phone activated.
There is no way to get to "Airplane Mode" or any other menu.

I believe that touching the four corners of the activation screen exits the activation window.

Noticing that the wifi tether problem keeps coming back for my Droid X, I was wondering if anyone has a solution. Today is Nov 17, 2011 and I find solutions as far back as August, but nothing more recent.
I got my Droid RAZR fixed in about 5 minutes using SQLite editing line 150 changeing the "1" to a "0" and now I use the Verizon Hotspot button and tethering works great, although none of the wifi tether apps will work.
Has anyone found a similar fix for the Droid X?
Thanks in advance!
9020T with stock ICS -flashed yesterday.
But 3g doesnt work anymore??
Any ideas?
Same problem here. Based on my monitoring of the phone status, it doesn't connect to the 3G networks anymore just EDGE and UMTS.
I don't even know what it's supposed to look like on ICS when the network is 3G or if there' a live data connection. I think the network signal bars are supposed to turn blue. But they don't without wifi.
Upgraded to 4.0.3 from stock 2.3.6 on i9023.

I also upgraded from stock 2.3.6 on i9020T
Everything else is working great except for 3g..
I use a program called notification toggle to move from wifi to 3g and it just crashes if I press 3g.
I go into data settings instead and everything looks fine ...data is enabled etc.. but 3g icon never appears in the signal bars ,so cannot connect.
Anyone know how to fix this?
Anyone ?
I Need help getting the 3g working or will have to try and go back to 2.3.6
I had the same problem after going to ics from 2.3.4 and then to 2.3.6. go to network settings and just refresh or delete and renew the settings. it will scan and take like ten minutes. it will find tmo and att. pick tmo and you should see the mobile network work now. did for me. 3g and edge and all

I had to do a factory reset to got data working. 9020t
From the top of my head... If rooted
Download root explorer
Locate efs files....
Move the following files to root of SD card:
Nv.log
Nv_data.bin
Nv_data.bin.md5
Once ur done reboot and u should be ok
-Google Galaxy Tab
Also experiencing this. 9023
Factory reset = no dice.
Gonna try to narrow down the problem a bit. I flat out refuse to root my phone to fix an issue caused by an official OTA update.

Same opinion here regarding not rooting. Too bad the factory reset did not work for you, because it just did for me. A great relief that it did, too. Apparently the APN settings remained after the reset and it got 3g and data connection again even during the phone setup.

How did you do your reset?
Settings - backup & reset - factory data reset ?
or
bootup the device holding vol up power and do reset from there?
why dont you guys do what i said to do?
go to settings --> click more at the top --> click mobile networks --> click access point names --> opn the options menu and select reset to default.
now click on network operators in the mobile network settings menu --> allow it to search (can take a while)
here's where it takes a little fiddling. i actually selected ATT first so that it would change all the settings. then i selected tmobile afterwards. then it just connected to the mobile network without a hitch. i believe i rebooted but am not sure.

Sounds like some files for the radio or something got left out.
Not sure if it's related but I can't get a signal either on my i9020a now. Flashing to a previous gingerbread rom doesn't bring it back either.

Here are my steps to switch bands without adb, sharing since I've gotten 2 confirmations it works on other phones:
Switch Sims
switch to settings -> cellular networks
Pull down notifications-> Airplane mode ON
Network App -> GSM / LTE (close app)
switch to settings
verify 4g (I always click on it, still shows CDMA)
NEtwrok app -> Turn on Radio
Settings -> click on CDMA -> Select 4G
Airplane Mode OFF
I was a little skeptical when I first read your instruction but this actually works for me as well. Note the trick is to get into the settings ->cellular networks before turning on airplane mode (you can't get into this setting with airplane mode on) then switching back and forth between the network app that was used on the 5.0.2 and the cellular networks.
Exactly, that's what I was trying to say when I put the instruction to turn on airplane mode from the notifications pulldown. I've tried this in two phones so far and it works 100%. Not sure why people in the other thread are still arguing about adb commands and bands reverting and all that stuff...

Did u get LTE out of doing it this way? I have AT&T
I don't have att but I'm pretty sure this does the same as the other method.
This works great...Thanks OP....(for newcomers You MUST download the "Network" (it has a phone icon) from the play store
Tried this as well and works. Even tried it on a phone I reset to factory and its working. Have to repeat the process if the sims are changed but this is a step up in convenience compared to the other method.
Yep, so far this in the only non-adb method that works for me. Some say disabling VZN apks would make it sticky, but I haven't been able to get that to work.
Does anyone know what the network app does to change the radio settings? Can this be scripted? Why is it able to change the setting when calling the shell commands in a terminal emulator on the phone fails.
For some reason this method did not work for me with 5.1. Please post a Play Store link for the exact Network app you are using if it is not this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mangelow.network
. The ADB method worked for me in post #1: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e-2015/general/how-to-verizon-moto-e-2015-gsm-network-t3098953
That's the one. I'll try to make a video or something since my steps are not described in the best way. So far from the comments people have been able to somewhat fill the gaps in my explanations

Didn't work for me.
Sorry I don't have the phone with me yet. What does the following step mean?
"switch to settings -> cellular networks"
Is it the same step as the following described in the other thread:
Open up the settings app, go to the mobile networks panel, select "Prefered Network Mode" and change it to "4G"
Thanks!
It means to go to the settings pane "Cellular Networks" no need to do anything there yet, but that option will be disabled once you turn Airplane mode on, so you need to be in that section before that so you can use the task switcher to get there later.

Why can't you just go there again later using Settings->Cellular Networks if there's not need to do anything there now? Yeah, a video would be useful for me. People posting here should specify there OS version: e.g. 5.1 . I know it's in the title, but you don't know what's on people phones.

Once you activate Airplane Mode, the Cellular Networks option will be disabled.. so you need to keep it active so you can switch to it later. Couple of people in the thread and offline have confirmed this working in 5.1, but yeah it would help if all people with working steps posted their version. Is there a screen capture app that is free?

Both bluetooth and USB work, but WiFi requires a mobile hotspot plan (which I don't have, so I can't test).
If you are the only one on your plan, go prepaid, I dont pay extra and the stock tethering under settings works just fine

I searched for the same, tried a number of apps, tried all of these recommended root apps & protocols ended up with the same disappointing result. Most of it just didn't work or no one could provide the necessary tools in proper sequential steps.
With you phone powered on remove your sim card. Go to Mobile hot spot & tethering, activate blue tooth tethering.wait a few minutes put your sim back in. you should now be able to pair devices with your phone and share its internet connection..

Found this in the other threads regarding hotspot. If you download "Network Signal Refresher Lite" from 8JAPPS in the playstore you can use native tethering. Just open the app and hit refresh and the moment you lose service drag down the quick tiles and tap the hotspot button. Been using this on my Moto Z Droid for the past few days and it works perfectly

Use Network signal refresher
Does anyone know of any workarounds? Network Signal Refresher stopped working for me with Nougat as well.
Yesterday they had an update for Network Signal Lite to version 5.0. Didnt work for me.
Today they have another update to version 5.1 hoping it fixes the issue. Just figured I would share.
i take it popping the sim doesn't work as well then. seams as if they might have closed the "if not able to call home let hotspot on anyway" bug then.

Does your carrier support Wi-Fi calling, its possible that either Its not enabled on your account or its not yet supported. That's probably why nothing is showing? I could be wrong though.
Try looking in the phone app/3 dots/settings. That's where I find the wi-fi calling option
