Lag/slowdown problem with my SGS2 camera - Galaxy S II General

Hello all
Yesterday I started having problems with video recording on my SGS2. The camera has begun to "slutter" during video recording. EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkQE_62Ee6Y
I notice it doesn't happen outdoors in broad daylight, but even so you can see the room I am in is well lit, and the problem still occurs.
I don't know what to make of it. I tried doing a factory reset, removing and re-inserting the battery, but no dice. The problem persists. Could this be a hardware defect with the camera?
When I was using it last night to record there was suddenly a huge white "flash" on the screen, and it was definitely an image anomaly, not a stray light source.
Has anybody else experienced this problem? :\
EDIT: I remembered something important when going through yesterday's videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZlv_XVK2Pw
I was doing some night testing. Notice how the video keeps getting really bright at random moments? It almost looks like I am turning the flash on and off, but I am not. The camera was doing this by itself! Like it was reducing speed to take in more light or something.. The problem is that since it did that last night, it has been doing it ever since in better lighting conditions. I have taken a close look at the other sluttering videos and noticed that the videos also get a tiny bit brighter when the sluttering occurs. It is just far more obvious in the video I just posted.
Does anybody have any idea at all on what this could be? I'm starting to suspect something went wrong with the camera.. Hardware-wise :\
EDIT: Added video links now that I'm allowed to post them

Nobody besides me has this problem? Nor any idea of what it could be?

I am having the same problem with my second SGS2. With my first this wasn't happening... The first SGS2 was having the OC firmware, the second is SC... Maybe is related? How can i change to OC firmware?

UPDATE: I have tried rooting my phone and flashing it with a new rom(lite'ning 1.5).. So both kernel AND rom have been replaced. Sluttering is STILL present.
If you ask me, this pretty much excludes software issue as a possibility. It seems what I have is a hardware fault. Guess it's time to reflash to stock and take it in for repair/replacement.. Sigh :\

exposition -2 and you"ll see no more slutting !

Thank you, that actually worked! But.. Do you know why it this happens or did you just happen upon this fix by chance?
Does anybody have at least a probable explanation for this? I think there is still a potential problem with the hardware since it only started doing this yesterday(I didn't do any updates). I never had a problem before :\

i think it's autofocus issue !
maybe next firmware solved it .............

You think so? But if that's true, why would my camera start doing this all of a sudden without any updates? And if you check night video samples on youtube, there is absolutely no lag or slutter in those, and I highly doubt they all set their exposure to -2..
It's good to know I'm not the only one with the issue at least, but there still don't seem to be many people with this problem given the low amount of replies.
I'd really love to hear from more people. Anyone else have this problem, please let us know!

Also check if your video quality is set to normal. If it is, try changing it to superfine.

Thanks for the suggestion! Though it has been set to superfine this entire time. I tried playing with all of the settings since I was tipped off about the exposure having an effect.. And unfortunately lowering the exposure to -2.0 is still the only way to get rid of the sluttering for me
It does seem to be a problem with autofocus indeed. It's like the camera keeps slowing down in an effort to pick up more light each time it tries to focus.. I'm still baffled as to why it started doing this all of a sudden.
The behaviour looks very much like that of cameras with a dedicated night mode. Lower FPS(reduced shutter speed) in an effort to capture more light. It's odd seeing as the "normal" GS2s don't do that. Every low light/night sample on youtube is buttery smooth. :\

About the camera...

Is it not that good, or is it just me?
Everytime I take a picture, the camera freezes when saving the picture,
Problem is.. the "frozen" image, is slighly before the actual image which is saved..
Most of my picture so far, are blurred...
Id sort of expected that this camera was lighting fast, but so far it dosent seem so....
On the other hand.. My hands are constantly shaking, and that dosent help much.
So anyone here with steady hands, who takes great pictures, and its just me whos a bad photographer?
I could post on saturday. since the stores are closed aswell as the postal office now in the easter. and I won't be home again untill friday.
But I could post some so that we could compare when I got the phone in my hands.

I am really interested in how the picture quality will be compared to the X1 and the Magic. If it is anything like either of them, then I hope the Magic.
It is such a shame that I can't get it now, when it is in the mail. but I am just to far away from home at the moment :/
it really sucks tho
Tip for non blurry pictures, use touch focus mode - works very good here.
Seems to focus better and you don't risk rocking the phone because you press the camera key.
Otherwise it's as with all mobile phone cams, the sensors and optics are limited by size, so of course you get better pictures the more light you have.
I find the camera very nice in comparison to my N1.
My pictures turn out just fine. maybe a blurry one once in a while but nothing to complain about. Try turning on the image stabilizer

Image stabilizer!!!! Why didnt I think of that while checking in the settings....
Not the pictures are actually good... Strange thing now, when I click to take the picture, it freezes with a blurry image, but the actual picture is great!
here is some pictures that I've taken today can be found here.
I might upload some other pictures later. but we will see.
I do not think that it is that bad, it is better than the X1 camera, and I do think that the picture quality was slightly better than the Magic camera aswell.
The only thing that I can complain about with this phone would be the battery I guess.. It could have been better. but I tought the same thing about my x1 in the beginning, but now does it last 2 days some times.
2-3 hours when I am teethering the network and downlading with torrent on it tho... but that is things that takes alot of battery.
mine freezes with a blurry image aswell. not sure about the actual quality since ive only seen them on the phone itself.
ive got another question tho, does your camera in macro mode make noise when pressing the button halfway(focusing) its like a loud click, very mechanic sounding?
id say the x2 had a much better camera so far

Yeah. You have to turn on the LED in settings before it's usable. I've read that it's a limitation in 1.6 but I don't know really. Seems to work great on HTC Legend with 2.1 though.
Yeah, what is the flash like on the x10? Is there a flash????
theres no flash, only a constant light that will blind you!

I thought the camera in the X1 was pretty good actually but the one in the X10 is insanely great! The image stabilizer is just GREAT! I don't know how I could live without it with my X1! The image quality is great too!

Camera Configuration

hello guys i want the best Camera Configuration ( macro or single or infinity ......)
because really my camera suckss my xperia was .14 and i debrand it to .16 but my camera is very bad !!!!!
Or the problem is with the photographer
I saw on Esato some amazing pictures taken with X10.
cant complain here ... best pic ever with that phone .. and fastet ever seen readjusting from light to dark places ... the only thing i dont like is the autofocus .. it cant focus to close to an object ( that is 3 - 5 cm away from the camera lense like my x10) but since i rarly do that i dont care
ok noblack can u tell me ur config.
I've found using the camera on Touch Capture, 8mp, Normal scene, Centre metering, Auto white-balance gives me the best pictures.

pretty sure it's the firmware of ur phone that's giving out crap picture. i didn't even bother changing the setting on the camera and the pic comes out just fine. it does pretty amazing in dark places too for a phone
what si ur firmware ?
firmware version 1.6
baseband version R1DA007
i have
firmware version 1.6
baseband version R1FA016
what is the different !!!!
yours is newer
I think the problem is your phone.
Try using EV -1 here has improved 50%
-1 EV is too much...
I think -7 is better and also, for better results is a photoshop app on the market.
A bit +contrast and saturation and everything is ok.
My images are a bit ... washed so, -7 EV + contrast makes them a bit better.
I'm not happy either with the quality compared with what picture i saw on esato.

video camera blurry?

Hello , I instaled eb13 via samsungs downloadable exe and the first time it was really laggy and buggy so I thn went into basic system recovery and iped data and such and then did it again and now I have an awesome smooth runnign froyo aside from the browser checkerboard and the video camera. Tghe browser I can deal with but what gives witgh the video camera? It is horrible when your moving quick its extremely blurry. This was not the case before and there is no real logical reason for the downgrade. I don't get it since I'm on a bug free froyo now. Anyone found a fix?
I have the same issue
Same here with the camera. Dunno about the browser as I use Dolphin HD.
The camera only presents the lag in low-light conditions it seems. It did not do that with DK28 or DI18.
Some users report not having this issue but do not mention low-light vs. high-light.
Ran update through Samsung's exe.
i've noticed this as well
Damn this sucks.....I lways braged to my girl that the recording was better vs her evo shift lol. Now its eaxctly the same. What a crock. I doubt they'll reease an update to fix it with there laz asses. I'm rlly just wondering if its an issue with the method of installing or eb13 in general and or if devs can fix it.
Yup, I didn't know I had this issue until coming across this thread. The video is fine in good light conditions but recording in low light produces blurry and bad video

YES, its all because of low lighting. I took a video today and the quality is AMAZING, I love my epic
except for the fact that now we can't saves picture messages. Once they fix that and the checker boarding on the browser--this phone is perfect.
I'm trying to remember if it was Sprint who released an update shortly after the Moment's camera fiasco (same thing..updated to 2.1 and camera went laggy) or if it was a developer who fixed it and released it on SDX.
Anyone else remember that?

Yeah, video recording is totally screwed up. The framerate drops along with the lighting/increased ISO. My room is dimly lit right now, and I can point it at my monitor and it records at a nice smooth framerate, but as soon as I pan over to a dimly lit area of the room, the framerate tanks to like no higher than 5 fps. I didn't expect EB13 to be much if any better than DK28, but so far it's worse. How can Samsung drops the ball every time, and they spent how many months working on this update?
Im really having no problems after wiping data and cache and all that and then flashing besides this problem with the camera. It seems to be a problem for 95% of us. How did the other 5% not get this problem lol.

Here's what I think is going on with the video problems:
I've looked at videos I shot on Eclair, and in low light it just didn't have any sensitivity at all. Anything below an average room lighting was just pitch black. But, the video stayed smooth.
On Froyo the camera app appears to try to reduce the frame rate to increase the sensitivity of the camera. You can see images in VERY dark environments, but with only a few frames a second.
Neither option is very good but I think I like dark video over 4 frames a second.
I'm guessing there is a hidden parameter somewhere that controls this. Something like a mimimum ISO setting.
Yea its a pain in the ass because of what it considers low light. I live in an old house so evenwith the lights on where I can see everything with my eyes the camera decides that its low ligt. So basically to have reg freamerates I have to be in a warehouse or outside in the sun? This is not acceptable lol. I like to take videos out and about at night and at concerts wich is usually dark.....as well as at m home of my daughter and now I can't. Hopefully your right and it meanss someone can go in there and change it back.

[Q] Camera tweaking help please

Greetings all, I just got the N3 upgrading from the N2 and without doing any tweaking I am finding my the camera performance poor compared to the N2. Is there something I need to tweak? I didn't really do anything at all to the N2 and got the best camera performance I've ever had on a phone. But so far the N3 is so bad I'm considering returning it if I can't fix this somehow. And yes, I did take the protective plastic off the camera

Have you gone into settings and put it on 16 mp
This has been answered tons of times in other threads, learn to search.
Basically people complain about the camera on the Note 3 when it's actually amazing. Take it outside and take a picture and you'll have stunning quality. When it becomes darker it got a hard time since they have removed the Night Time feature and inserted another method instead. This is mostly software related issues rather than hardware.
Yes, I tried 13M, 9.6 which is what it was set on out of the box and 8M. Doesn't make a difference. But thank you for trying to help.
And BunnyPig, don't be an ahole. I DID search but I haven't found ANY threads with an issue like mine. Outdoor pictures are JUST AS BLURRY as indoor. It has nothing do do with a lack of night mode, pictures that are normal, daytime indoor ambient light pictures should not be out of focus. This camera just will not focus. After looking around I see nothing that addresses this issue anywhere. Think it may be a bad unit and hardware releated. But thanks for nothing.

There are TONS of people complaining about the same thing, I was not being an "ahole". You are complaining about a camera that's really good, if it's defect then get it replaced, you haven't given us ANY pictures nor any description on what's wrong until now. I was just making a statement on that a lot of people have complained only because lack of skills on adjusting the camera and on the overall quality. Check this link out (took me one minute to search for this!)

You have a lot of decent pictures there. Some are better than others because some people know how to take pictures and how to get them to have decent quality with and without lightning. You're the being rude to me now. You can also find several solutions and explanations on how the camera works.
I just ran across the street to the Verizon store and the guys there looked at it and after 5 minutes said it's a hardware issue. Unfortunately they couldn't swap it out there because of my corporate plan so I am on the phone with Verizon and they are going to send me another one.
If the N3 needs more light than a brightly lit office or full sunlight outdoors to take a picture that is in focus then I am going back to my N2. We'll see what the new one does when it gets here.
Just for fun I installed Focus and tried that, but every time I try to take a picture with it I get an "unfortunately focus has stopped" error.

The long overdue photography video tutorial is finally out - enjoy!
Tell me what you think (oh, and I'm well aware of the microphone issue, I'll fix it next time). If you knew everything that I've said in this video already, fear not - I'm planning on making a part 2 and a part 3 about post-processing inside and outside of Android, since that's what people seemed interested in, as well as more general photography tips such as how to better compose an image. If you have anything else that you'd love to see a tutorial of, please do mention it!

I'm using the latest stock firmware from Sony. So nothing fancy!
The thing is, I tested some things before recording so the application was most likely still in memory. I tried again just now and the camera seems to open in about two seconds when it's not in memory.
Awesome! Great video!

And the more strong light from flash LED will make the photo better or doesn't for taking a picture with low light ? (light condition around 40-50%)
Thank you very much

Hey,
I never use the LED light on my phone for photos. I used to use Xenon flashes on my SE Satio and Nokia N8, but LED lights are generally just too weak. Especially the single LED found on the Z series. In low light, I will use Night Mode and set my phone against some object so that I can take photos at the minimum shutter speed. For my static shots, an LED light would imbalance the white balance anyway, so I'm always better off not using it (as a "fill light" it is also surprisingly ineffective).
The only time I would consider using the flash is when I'm not trying to take good shots but useful ones instead. Photos that otherwise turn out too dark to see anything that I should be seeing. As for club or party photos - I just don't take those. That is pretty much the most difficult environment and no smartphone camera can really take decent photographs in that case.
I can't seem to be able to view the video. Is it me or everyone?

I double-checked and I can watch it just fine as well. You sure you don't have something disabled in your browser?
... and man, it's awful listening to your own voice.
