Hey guys, just wanted some opinions here . I currently have a Hero running Froyo and was thinking about buying my contract out with nTelos and going with Verizon . At any rate, I can get the Droid 2 free with new contract or the Incredible free with a two year contract . That said , do you all think it's worth the change ? Are the phones really that much different ?
I came from a Hero running Froyo to the Droid2. I've also played around the the Incredible. The Droid2 and Incredible are hands down better than the Hero. You will instantly notice the difference...on the bootanimation/loadup. The Incredible/Droid2 is a different subject. Read some of the other posts about that decision though
first, where did you get it free??? I just upgraded from a kaosfroyo v36 eris(hero) to a droid 2 and just rooted it today. I instantly fell in love.

I'll cut to the chase.
I'm on Verizon currently mulling a switch to Sprint as a money saver.
Strongly considering the Evo as I can get it for a penny on Amazon.
Owning an Incredible and a NookColor, I know just about everything I need to know about rooting, blah blah, etc.
Just one question, on Evo ROMs, is 4G actively working? Say CM7 for example?
and is the root process the same? Unrevoked or am I out of the loop?
Yes, you can use unrevoked.
And yes, 4G works in cm7.

Ahh..not really. The latest Gingerbread update broke unrevoked. Currently there is no root exploit for the updated firmware. It's been that way for about a month. Many have confirmed that new Evo's are being shipped with 2.3.3 so until an exploit is found, if you get a new Evo you will not be able to root it.

Is there progress on rooting the 2.3.3 EVOs?
I'm hoping by some means Amazon would ship a Froyo EVO.

From what I hear the unrevoked team is working on it, but no ETA and scant information has been revealed. I'm waiting on a root to be discovered as well so I can exchange mine due to a few bright spots on the screen, but they are tolerable vs. giving up my rooted phone.
little bit more info for you then what others gave trying to look out for XDA peeps

not that i am aware of due to the fact none of the HTC 2.3.3 phones have been hacked yet. Maybe you could sell your vzw phone and buy a rooted evo off here or ebay or maybe craigslist. If you do tho gotta get the number checked to make sure its able to be activated on sprint and not black listed. Or if you wanted to you could get the evo 3d (which there has been strides on is being worked on very diligently so that it can be rooted.) I know you probally dont want to spend 200 but if you ported your number before 7/23 you can still get 125 credit.
http://www.sprint.com/landings/portcredit/?ECID=vanity:switchtosprint
also i beleave sprint will buy your phone at the moment for 72 bucks
with their buy back program which would leave you with a while 3 dollars you would have to pay for the phone. BUT I would suggest you do this very very soon.! hope you go through with it and enjoy if you want to check out the evo 3d many top devs have moved and some will probally move sooner or later just about the funds.
https://secure2.sprintbuyback.com/c...onid=2BEA87BD9605B2DCB255C5F7903FCEE3.server1
let us know if you joned sprint back here in the evo forums hope this helps you out man!
(ps if you are a member of a credit union or AAA ask if they have any eligble discounts or for your work to reduce your bill)
Spend the extra money and buy the 3D. You will thank yourself in the long run.
So I hear Sprint's network kinda blows, any info on this?
I know it's no Verizon but is it acceptable, gets the job done or downright miserable like AT&T?
I think it gets the job done but it is depends on your area also. I can watch netflix and tether and i have no complaints about it.

Also keep in mind you pay less so you Take hits in some areas lol.

If I end up getting an Evo off of Wirefly or Radioshack, is it safe to assume it'll be updated to 2.3 and not rootable for the time being?

If you get an evo with 2.2, you can use unrevoked, if 2.3, there is no root for it yet and you'll be stuck. As for CM7, everything thing works, except MIUI, because it has no 4G. And I thought I was Marino.

I think you shouldn't cancel your Verizon plan just yet, the EVO is a great device.and probably one of the phones to have a lot development going on , but Sprint network might not be your cup of tea , I love my EVO even tho I trade it around for some other phoned in the past lol , but Verizon kick ass out of Sprint in las Vegas , specially in 4G. You just might want to get a thunderbolt for Verizon on Craigslist just make sure to meet the dude at the Verizon store to make sure is clean

Hoping mine isn't updated.

Okay I have the $7 sprint insurance and my phone fails to connect to the sprint network(unrooted and stock 2.1).
I went to the sprint store today and they said they fixed it because the PRL was outdated blah blah blah....and the pohne worked fine.... for 2 hours then it failed again.
I chatted with sprint about it and a rep told me to go to the sprint store to get a new hero(he first offered me a refurb instinct! because he did not have any refurbs for the hero).
So tomorrow I have to go to the store again to claim a new hero.... but I'm 99.9% sure I won't see it since its discontinued.
What phone should I ask for if the hero is not in stock? (I am not asking for an evo or evo 3d just the next comparable phone that replaced the hero)
definitely do not get the instinct worst phone ever lol. if anything try and squeeze the lg optimous s out of them, it was very similar to the hero accept it didn't have sense, if they don't have any heroes in stock that is.

LG Optimus is very similar spec to the hero but better for some reason. Also has a real proximity sensor, still doesn't do flash. This would be a sidegrade though, you should shoot higher, sometimes the reps are good about that.
EVO 3D would be ideal but aim for a EVO Shift
Instinct is a big NO WAYYYY!!! That phone almost had me give up my cell phone and get a landline again it was so bad. The Optimus is a decent phone. My son has one and he generally likes it, however it doesn't have a large developer following so your ability to stick with it for the duration of your contract could be problematic.....if your contract extends beyond the next 6 months or so.

If his Hero is stock he'd probably be happy with an Optimus.....Agreed there. The Hero has been a lot more fun for me to tinker with though IMO.

Last time I checked (about a month ago) Aosp was primarily for the Optimus V some reports were that it would run on the S but it was buggy as hell and required the hard buttons remapped.... There were only 2 roms at the time worthy of a daily driver (stock & 1 custom). There were ony a couple of custom kernel choices and very few tweaks. It's also quite cumbersome to root (had to follow like 5 seperate threads and the screen is totally blank for 3/4 of the process). Please don't get me wrong it's not a bad phone, but if you're used to all of the customization of the Hero (like me)....I personally find it somewhat dissapointing.
***EDIT*** To be fair and objective since I don't give my son's Optimus the same love & TLC as our other phones & Nooks. I just popped over to Android Central to have a fresh look around. It seems like the rooting proccess has improved substantially in the past month and there are a couple of flashable "Sprint fixes" for the Aosp rom. Also new since I last visited is a unofficial beta CM7.....For what it's worth.
I sat down and had a beer with an old friend last night, he told me he had a samsung moment and since they didnt have that phone in stock he got an epic 4g.
They offered him a keyocera android phone and he said he paid for a high end samsung phone when it came out...not a keyocera.
I played with the optimus at the store and I like it...my upgrade is in 2 months...if they're feeling nice and let me renew my contract I'll get an evo 3d.
But an optimus S will be fine
I only need two things...my dish network tv everywhere app and pandora...
Lol.... this is what they offered me directly from my sprint web transcript
I can offer you one out of below mentioned refurbished phones for free. The contract will not be renewed. Once your phone will be eligible for upgrade, you may upgrade:
LG Lotus(Refurbished)
SANYO SCP-3810 (Refurbished)
Samsung Reclaim(Refurbished)
SCP-2700 by Sanyo (Refurbished)
Samsung Instinct (Refurbished)

Well lets wait and see if I get the new phone on Friday. 99.9% guaranteed i'll get a refurb but meh its worth avoiding the $100 deductible from asurion.
Played with the optimus in the store again... the thing flies on stock 2.2.
Played with the evo shift and the slider feels firm compared tot he epic which feels cheap in the hand.
Going to use my upgrade towards the Galaxy S II or Motorola photon on september or whenever the phones are out

It sucks for VZW customers but also sucks for HTC. The DNA's not selling well on VZW and once the SGS4's released won't sell at all. VZW has almost as many subscribers as all of Japan and HTC getting them and the other three U.S. carriers to sell the One under its own name would have been a huge win. VZW not carrying it means HTC lost a little under half the U.S. as a sales opportunity for the One and the DNA's not strong enough against the SGS4 to move the sales needle for them. It's a shame. When asked about devices with larger than 5" displays on an analyst's call in February HTC's CFO said "yes, in the coming months." So maybe there will be a "Droid" by HTC phablet on VZW in the future.

Thought we already knew it wasnt gonna be on verizon? You know..until later?
Verizon did get the Note 2?
Verizon is a carrier that wants to have their way with a device. If they can't put their carrier branding all over it and make a weird commercial they don't want it.
CDMA carriers always miss out/ late getting phones. It's best to be on GSM if you like to change phones

Anyone using G4 Play with T-Mobile? If so, what is your experience?
I'm using it on TMo. Great reception. VoLTE working. Band 12 support. Go for it.
I'm using as well as a temp phone until my regular gets fixed (HTC10 with insurance). I'm impressed so far! Better reception on both cellular and WiFi, probably due to the plastic vs. metal case. No WiFi calling but probably the best bang for the buck around. Battery lasts a long time and is replaceable.
I'm also using with Tmobile, coming from a S7 that was stolen. I'm floored by this phone, I'm not a heavy gamer or anything and for my use this thing is buttery smooth. I mostly: stream music, netflix, amazon video, use with chromecast, reddit, and of course as the base for my Lg Urbane watch.
I have g4 play with metro PCs. No miracast jus Google I guess til I'm brave enough to root it.
I just bricked a new metro PCs Alcatel
one touch XL 5.0.1 or 2 .
Eventually I'll find out how to stop Alcatel XL from freezing at metro PCs logo. (I know this part should go on another forum but it freezes from me using kingaroot and ended up with 2 superuser's kings and su think it's chainfires nfs

I dropped it and cracked the screen. The HTC 10 came with what HTC calls "Uh-Oh" protection - a one-time replacement at no charge if you damage it to where it doesn't work. I now have a new HTC 10 replacement at no charge and gave the Moto to my son who is enjoying it immensely.
Been using it on T-Mobile all day today. Setup LTE yesterday, no connectivity issues, and coverage was better than my old 6P, for whatever reason. I got nearly 6 hours of SOT as well, I am SO pleased with this device.
Tmo here, just switched from iPhone 5s to mess with Android again. Impressed as no lag like the s5 I had a few months ago.
