At&t 850hz on rooted? Possible?

Has anyone with a rooted nexus s managed to enable the at&t frequencies? 850hz? is it possible physically (is there a 3g 850hz frequency built in?)

3G on this first version of the Nexus S (assuming they come out with an HSPA version as well like they did for the N1) supports 900, 1700, and 2100 MHz. The onboard hardware does not support 850hz / 1900hz.

That's a real bummer...

I'm pretty sure it was intentional. It would be in Google's best interest to have all bands so that they wouldn't need to release multiple versions like with the N1. They likely have a deal with T-Mo

5 and 6 band HSPA radios are still quite uncommon. I can only think of one or two devices on the market that use them.
It is just life. Send them feedback and tell them you want an 850/1900 version.

Just wait for the Nexus S to come out on ATT, I seriously doubt Google is going to make the Nexus S strictly Tmobile. Tmobile makes up less than 10% of all cell phones, would be kind of stupid...

That's GSM - you can make calls and get 2G (EDGE) data just fine on AT&T with the Nexus S... but would you want to? =)

Its not googles' fault. A long time ago the US gsm providers decided to add a download chanel to 3g gsm so that users couldn't take their phone from one provider to another and so the could not import phones in from europe. You can take a phone from att or tmo and it will do 3g on any european gsm provider you chose. However no normal european gsm phone will do 3g in the us. They lack the second download chanel. So don't complain about google, it was the providers that made a conscious decision to muck it up.

I'm on ATT
I hate the EDGE speeds but there is nothing else we can do. I currently carry around my Nexus One with this one to use as a hotspot. Google will probably release another version within a couple months as they did with the N1. Hopefully they will cause tethering all the time is awesome to show off but cumbersome all at the same time

I picked up the nexus s yesterday. Love the phone compared to my Captivate on Cognition but EDGE is really hampering the experience.

Nokia managed to design a pentaband 3G (5 different 3G bands, 850/900/1700/1900/2100MHz) phone, the N8 and it has no problems AFAIK. Samsung probably doesn't have the knowledge or talent to design a pentaband 3G device though.

The T-Mobile Vibrant (a Samsung Galaxy S phone, just like our Nexus S) can be used with full 3G speeds on both T-Mobile and AT&T (1900mhz). My friend is currently using an unlocked T-Mo Vibrant on AT&T with no problems and fine 3G speeds.
Samsung certainly knows how to make a phone that will work on both networks; this was clearly a Google decision...why, we'll never know, but I suspect pressure from T-Mobile.

At&t does not use 3g on 1900mhz everywhere. In fact, a major AT&T initiative in the past few years was to move 3g to the 850 band everywhere possible in order to enhance indoor signal strength.
A phone that can only do 3g on 1900mhz is not a nationwide solution for AT&T, coverage is quite hit or miss.

Check the nexus s specs again. It does not have 1900mHz 3g in any form at all like the vibrant.
It only has 900, 1700, 2100.

Re-read my post, and the post I was responding to again.
I never said that the Nexus S supports 850/900, I was telling a guy who said Samsung didn't know how to make such a phone that he was incorrect because Samsung has already made such a phone (the Vibrant which supports both AWS/1700/1900/2100 on the UMTS side).
Ironic that you're telling me to re-read something when you should have done the same before correcting me.

Yes, I'm well aware of this, but if you're in any major metro area where AT&T has been offering 3G service for a couple of years or more, 1900 is likely available to you. 850 is in far fewer areas, isn't it? It's only a recent addition to San Francisco as I recall.
1900 support in the Nexus S would have made it much more attractive to me, and a viable AT&T alternative for many across much of the country, but I'll concede that 850/1900 would be necessary to address the whole nation.

I see I mis read your post thinking it meant it had 1900.

Alright as seen above is the Galaxy S2, Mkkkkkk thats great and all but because it has HSPA+ does that mean it can be on T-Mobile only I get confused by this and think "God dammit the antenna cant be run on Sprint, there is no way we are getting that phone now" This happened with the Pre 3 too, I just need some further insight into what that spec means and how it affects which provider the phone is going too.

HSPA+ is run on GSM networks NOT CDMA which is what sprint and Verizon use. Hence the different stuff on each network ex. EVDO, and HSPA

I think at&t also is going to be using hspa+

Yes, but keep in mind that leak is coming from Korea and it's going to be at MWC so it's no surprise that it only mentions a GSM / HSPA+ version. Nothing says that there wont be a CDMA / LTE / Wimax version for Sprint / Verizon.

HSPA+ is what the GSM carriers are doing for 4G right now. I think ATT is going to do LTE, T-mobile doesn't plan on it...I just switched back to sprint from t-mobile and the speed difference is ridiculous. Even on 4G, I am getting half the data speeds that I did with t-mobile HSDPA. Definitely not what I expected.

When the original Galaxy S was announced, it was GSM only as well but variants came out for all the carriers. I wouldn't buy anything from Samsung though, regardless of how appealing it seems.

Actually, the term pre-dates combo GSM/CDMA devices and was used to refer to GSM phones since GSM networks were the predominate cell technology outside of the US (and still are).
Oh, and to the OP, HSPA+ is being marketed as "4G" currently by AT&T alongside their yet-to-be-launched LTE network. Talk about confusing You may find that with a little bit of effort,( or none at all) HSPA+ equipped devices will bet interchangeable between T-mobile and AT&T. There are also rumours that some LTE-equipped devices will be able to swap between Verizon and AT&T.

Yep..me too. Actually breaking my contract (less than a year in because of Sprints abysmal speed) as soon as Infuse, or Galaxy 2 etc break.

I lived in Cambodia for five years and travelled between often to Thailand and other countries. They all use GSM...

I'm breaking contract with T-mobile. I had a G1, loved it. Got a Vibrant, it was a nightmare trying to get it to work correctly, although I can't lie, I still enjoyed having it. Got a Nexus S, too many problems, returned it. Got a MT4G, nice phone, runs smoothly, but the screen was too small and the phone itself is a bit on the ugly side.
The real determing factor for me was that Sprint has 4G in my area, all of the other providers have 3G, and T-mobile is still running on Edge. I'm within my 30 day trial period w/ Sprint and the Evo, and I'll see how it goes. I was really hoping on going w/ Verizon and the HTC Thunderbolt, but alas, it's still up-in-the-air when it will come out. Verizon is more expensive as well when it comes to data plans. And as far as the MT4G, although CM7 runs very well on it, and it is very stable, I still can't bring myself to buying a 4G phone from a company that only offers Edge in my area (supposedly the military base near here is using their 3G towers to link to Afghanistan, but that's their problem, not mine)

Do yourself a favor... don't buy a Samsung device. They make good screens, I'll admit. But you'll be waiting for updates forever, and somebody won't release the code... just look at the Vibrant threads... they haven't even gotten CM6, let alone CM7.

You're an idiot. The only places outside of North America that CDMA are used are sporadically in China, a carrier or two in Japan, here and there in the rest of Asia, and that's about it.
"World phones" are AT&T (since they use different frequencies than the rest of the world's GSM networks except for... Telstra in Australia?), Verizon, and Sprint phones which have extra radios that support the standard quad-band networks. That's why there's two models of the Nexus One: A T-Mobile/World model, and the AT&T model.

The future of mobile is going to be in wifi not cellular. Hspa+ is TM's trial run at nailing down seemless transfer from 4G to wifi for data and voice calls. Assuming there are not many stumbling blocks, their future (and any other wireless companies that dont want to be left behind) will be into switching to running purely off wifi towers.

Confirmed: Bell releasing Motorola ATRIX March 17th

It’s now confirmed. Bell has released a statement indicating that the Motorola ATRIX is going to be available on March 17th. As for the price points: $169.95 on a 3-year (with a minimum $50 voice/data plan) or for $599.95 on no-contract. Bell will also sell the Lapdock and the HD Multimedia Dock but no word on those prices were announced.

As an american living in canada the US has far better cell phone service, I just wish motorola made a version that worked on wind because that's what I use... 40/mo for unlimited voice/texts/data is too hard to beat =)

They are great. If you live in a metropolitan area. I'm juuust outside Oshawa, the Wind Zone ends 3 blocks from my house. Not good if I'm getting say groceries and need to call home to see if my wife needs something.
Or travelling. As much as I hate Rogers, my data usage in the states comes off my monthly balance

1) So, can I purchase an unlock code for it?
2) Also, what GSM/3G bands will it support?
3) Finally, no 4G??

Pretty sure you can get an unlock code for any phone out there... just a matter of price. In Toronto you can just go to pacific mall and a ton of places can get it for 10 bucks or so. There's some online sites that work too but it's a bit riskier.
It'll most likely be the same exact phone that AT&T has in terms of hardware since Bell/Rogers/Telus all use the same 3G frequencies now.
And for 4G... does any carrier in canada even have 4G yet?

Well, getting an unlocked, rooted Atrix 4G from the US will cost me CAD $650 ... while getting it locked from Bell would cost me CAD $600.... I'm not sure if $50 is worth worrying about unlockability and rooting...

It's like how AT&T is doing it, calling their HSPA+ 4G.
I was wondering about rooting the Atrix. The AT&T version is already rooted, would the same rooting method work for the Bell version? Would this only work if they have the exact same firmware for 2.2? I remember when I manually install updates for my Nexus One, I had to wait for the AT&T update to come out since the firmware was different than the TMo version. This was before the versions were merged. So I'm wondering if this is the case? Or does this have no relevance?

when first switching to tmobile i bought my gf an optimus t before getting her the g2, i have to say it was one of my more delightful android experiences ive had, unlocked bootloader, fastboot enabled by default, source code is up (and teh real source code not some samsung give only enough to be gpl compliant crap) the day phones are released. the build quality was decent and i enjoyed it. i think the g2x is a good start for them to enter the high end devices, with there not truly being any recent phone releases on tmobile it will mean a lot of devs might snag one up.

Yeah I think it'll most likely get as much support as the G2 has eventually.
As long as the bootloader get's unlocked.
Others have complained about it being released with Froyo.
But, I don't care what version it's released with, just that it's bootloader can be unlocked for CWM and later CM builds.
I stopped caring about manufacturer OS releases a long time ago.
Unless you have a Nexus phone, it's usually not as good as CM anyway.

First timing posting mainly just searching forums and try ROMs...
anyways I'm very interested in the G2X will most likely get one even though I'm weary about the merger much like a lot of people. I did read that the G2x is going to ship with T-mobile HSPA+ capability (duh) and AT&T HSPA+ capability, so it shouldn't turn into a useless phone once the merger happens.

I also read the G2x will ship with att and tmobile bands.. so seein as att most likely, hopefully fcc stops it, ill be movin to att sadly. Ugh, I work for them and hate them.. so sad. but if it works for ATT sounds be good thou. ATT is gettin there own versions of it thou.. and usually price android phones pretty cheap since then lick apples nuts on the daily..

The only big manufacturer making these types of radio is Nokia, who makes Penta-band radios which basically hit every mhz spectrum around the world.

When I worked for verizon, when the htc ppc6700 was out (that long ago) the dumbphones with music players were the rage ie the chocolate and the moto q. Yes I consider the moto q a dumbphone because it was a pile of ****. I sold the hell out of certain lg phones like the 8300, and I owned 2 8300 for a reason. It was simply a kick ass phone for its time.
Lg quality seems to be good on cdma. Gsm I'm not sure tho. I was so satisified with lg at the time I would say 50% of my sales were lg devices at the time.

I can't post the article but the G2X will have AWS Band IV/ 2100 / 1900 / 850

Update: It turns out the "4G" radio in the G2x is quadband (2100 / 1900 / 1700 / 850MHz) but strangely, it's limited to 14.4Mbps downlink speeds. Apparently, this also applies to the T-Mobile G-Slate. We're reaching out to T-Mobile to check if the G2x radio is HSPA+ or merely just HSPA.

Update: It turns out the "4G" radio in the G2x is quadband (2100 / 1900 / 1700 / 850MHz) but strangely, it's limited to 14.4Mbps downlink speeds. Apparently, this also applies to the T-Mobile G-Slate. We're reaching out to T-Mobile to check if the G2x radio is HSPA+ or merely just HSPA.

Sorry about that. The first linked story said that it would only be compatible with 1900, which would've meant you won't get UMTS in some areas on AT&T.
I wonder if this is a conscious decision by LG to make sure the phones don't get thrown out in a year.

I'm sure. Its a smart decision.
The one thing I will really miss about T-mo is how cool they are about releasing phones. No telco has given Android love like T-mo. The G2x is another great example.

Looks like a nice device but personally if it doesn't have a hard keyboard, its not for me. I've tried the touchscreen deal but with how much I text and email on the go, I can't live without a keyboard.
Gonna be sticking with the DZ for while. Won't likely get a new device until I get a new service provider... Considering Sprint with the looming merger between ATT and TMobile. Verizon is just too pricey.

I agree. but try this.... If the screen is 4 inch or 4.3 it actually is not too bad to type on anything smaller it can be troublesome. The mt4g actually is bare min size to type on in portrait but 4in or bigger is actually not too bad so dont totally rule it out of a hardware keyboard is not a feature available later on.

I will consider getting one to compliment or replace my G2 depending on the build quality. The hard keyboard is not a necessity for me and I really like the 4 inch screen size, tegra 2, and stock Android.
Also, I work for T-mobile and the optimus t has been a solid Android phone with very few issues or complaints. It is an entry level handset but very solid. It will be nice to see what LG does with a high end device.

What that basically does is TMO and ATT will SHARE the spectrum, meaning their phones have to have the same bands, and you guys know that ATT gets most of the cool phones and TMO usually gets nothing but Galaxy S series as its top of the line phone.

It'll be sharing the same spectrum, meaning their phones will be compatible with TMO's network.

I honestly can't answer that, but just opinion wise, i think thats a no. International phones have different bands than that of ATT or TMO, but if ATT gets a phone that we don't (iphone) we SHOULD be able to use it.

They aren't sharing spectrum, they have a roaming deal. Which is totally different.

T-Mobile has had some nice phone though, didn't we have the first dual core? The Sensation, Amaze, G2X, and SGS2 are all top of the line.
Just curious though, wouldn't this mean that At&t's already terrible data speeds will become worse, since more people will be using the same spectrum?

My unlocked 3gs is still just hitting edge..guess im not in the area affected by this.

But i think what this new arrangement is to use ATT towers only for roaming where tmobile towers are not available. All t mobile phones do support the 2100 band, so that makes sense. But Att phones cannot work on tmobile 3G/HSPA+ 850 mhz band.

Yep. I wouldn't go buying an AT&T device just yet. They're not merging their networks. They're just letting TMo customers use their network in some areas. This isn't a full frequency overlap of the companies' networks as the OP is implying.

I think they are going to be sharing "some" spectrum. It has already started:

That's their own spectrum and has nothing to do with AT&T.
