For 400-500 I would say to go with an Acer computer, while they're not the best on the market they are definitely the best for the price.

Newegg.com
Newegg or tigerdirect is where to buy. DON'T buy acer, emachines, or gateway. You used to be able to save some money with those brands, but now its so competetive you can find asus, lenovo, and toshiba at the same prices.
sent from "The Other Woman"
Staples pretty often puts out deals to beat newegg and tiger direct.
You can get about an i3 or i5 hp lappy with a 17 inch screen for the mid 400s.
Just keep an eye on slickdeals.net and techbargains.com
You'll fnd something pretty quick.
I also would not buy acer emachines or gateway. Real talk.

Whatever you get make sure to bump up the ram and see what bloatware can be removed from it.
skip the i3 processor ... i5 or better
check out microcenter too...many bargains can be had there...open box/clearance & hot ad deals
Well, since he wants to develop, the first thing he should do is format the harddrive and install linux lol. Ubuntu 10.10 or 11.04... your choice. As far as RAM goes, get AT LEAST 4gigs. Compiling uses cpu, so get at least an i5, gpu... the only laptops with good gpu's are expensive and you don't really need a gpu to compile or dev, so you'll be good with an integrated intel one... don't expect to game out of it though... and lastly get adequat hdd space... like at least aa 500gb hard drive...

That's a nice machine at a nice price, but watch what graphics you get those intel hd chips are kinda cheesy for a lot of online games. I got a lenovo t510 that is very similar and its only downfall IMHO is the intel hd graphics.

You don't need an Intel laptop get one with a E-350 which is better than Intel HD graphics. If you do get an Intel laptop make sure you get the 2nd gen Core processors because battery life is amazing. Core i3 2310m or Core i5 2410m

My opinion lol;
Dell is your way to go. Dell uses pretty decent hardware with little issue from it. the processors are always top I believe only i5s and up now but the best thing is the extended warranty. You will have no issues getting your pc fixed from them if you ever do run into a problem. They send the repair man to my house so no sending the pc off for repair. Newegg is excellent but I don't like not having dells warranty backing it so if your not getting top of the line parts in it from newegg id be careful. Hp, emachine and unfortunately even toshiba now I wouldn't buy because the rate their hw fails. Toshiba used to be my goto brand.

Also, to upgrade the ipad to 64gb, it's another $100 plus tax. To upgrade a xoom, it's the price of a 32gb micro SD and possibly missing that second part. Not to mention you can upgrade it on your own after you buy it. You're not forced to decide before you buy it.

its an old article..seen it before....but I also cant wait..
to note though dont let the benchmarks fool you too much..if you visit coremarks website:
Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU 330 1600 - SCORE: 9049.77
Intel Core i3 CPU M 380 2530 - SCORE: 19543.40
And remember the AMD E-350 is very low power and is almost as powerful as a core i3...

Tegra 3 is just a next gen quad core, but it almost certainly will fix the flaw. Even if they didn't, technically the quad core would be powerful enough to just use the cpu to software decode the video most likely.

Mind you, a transistor isn't a processor! A single modern processor includes approximately one billion transistors!
Hz also isn't everything, in the PC world, the trend for the last several years have been to improve the IPC, rather than the Hz! It's the reason that a Pentium 4 running nearly 4 GHz would be crushed by a Sandy Bridge running at <2 GHz (even ignoring the extra cores).

How exactly do we stand corrected? It doesn't seem to be contradicting anything... in either this or the quad core thread! If anything, it backs up the claim that nVidia will be first with quad core processors (none of that info in that article looks at all recent, at least a couple months old!).
Just calculate it using Moore's law, though that thinking has a different meaning as technologies mature. Googlehertz makes more sense. Derp.

Both have AMD APU's.
I've been told (by a friend) the AMD APU's don't play that well with Ubuntu.
Could have been user error, but IIRC he said he found a good bit of people having trouble online..
Just givin a heads up, if others have reason to disagree or personal experience, go with their advice over mine...

yeah the newer Ubuntu doesn't like it. I have the and a8 APU'S and it just gets the black screen of death.... the sad part is at the end of boot up the song plays.... anyways yeah I suggested using LMDE since everything works upon boot up. Which was surprising. Well actually except CPU scailing and governors. But lilaj when you do get it and decide to put Linux on it. I can help ya.
