Really Cool Tech News!! - Epic 4G General

Not really related to the Samsung Epic, but some really awesome news I couldn't pass by.
http://androidandme.com/2011/02/new...-quad-core-cpus-in-android-devices-by-summer/
Expect some pretty sick tablets this summer =D (just telling those who were considering one)
Also, expect this for phones too by Christmas!
Looks like Q4 of 2011 will be something really spectacular.

quadcore?!?!?! thats better then my computer....
dumb dual-cored piece of ****.

I wonder if this processor will be able to play high profile h.264 finally. That was a RIDICULOUS flaw in the Tegra 2. Couldn't even play 720p high profile h.264.

Now i know to wait
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App

The problem with the SOC market is their business model of planned obsolescence which we (tech nerds) allow to continually give us the reach around.

its an old article..seen it before....but I also cant wait..
to note though dont let the benchmarks fool you too much..if you visit coremarks website:
Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU 330 1600 - SCORE: 9049.77
Intel Core i3 CPU M 380 2530 - SCORE: 19543.40
And remember the AMD E-350 is very low power and is almost as powerful as a core i3...

I was soo against tablets, especially since they they had the same specs as my samsung epic. But this could be good news for me playing TF2 on a tablet. I may have to get one.
I hate "Top Flight Security Mods"

By the time a quad-core comes out, the six-core will be out. They kinda rushed quad core though, dual core didn't even last 6 months. LOL

thunderbolt...

I tried the Thunderbolt for 2 weeks and returned it and this is why... its about twice as thick and ALOT heavier than the fascinate. Battery wouldn't last all day when I barely used it while my fascinate would easily last 2 days with little use or a full day of heavy use. The screen on the fascinate looks a lot better than the thunderbolt. Another thing I noticed was that the thunderbolt was always a lot hotter then my fascinate even when it was at its regular clock speed and was regularly at 110 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. So if anybody is thinking about getting the thunderbolt I hope I saved you the $35 restocking fee.
Nice to hear that the grass isn't always greener!

Kernels will help with the battery life, and I've used it and I don't mind the heaviness at all. The main reasons why I'm not bothering to upgrade to it is because the screen isn't as nice, and the GPU doesn't seem as good as the Fascinate's. To expand on that GPU point, I used Neocore on my sister's Thunderbolt and my Fascinate at the same time, and my Fascinate performed smoother and quicker, however the final FPS score was apparently better on the Thunderbolt's, which I found strange. However visuals don't lie, while benchmarks sometimes do (especially quadrants).
Overall, I'd just wait for a decent dual-core phone on Verizon, rather than upgrading to the Thunderbolt. Galaxy S II anyone?

Hopefully they will update the Galaxy S II a little more often then they have been doing with the fascinate but I think Samsung's hardware makes up for everything
Im probly still goin to get one I would like more oppinions tho some ppl love it and some hate it xD I won't know till I try it my self

I havent had 2 weeks worth of trial with it, but my Daughter just got one. As with every phone, it has it's ups and downs. I agree with most of the OP, but it has some positives. The front camera for one, the 4G for another.
It is like heaving around a brick though in size and weight compared to the Fascinate.
I am not switching to anything anytime soon, but I would still wait awhile to see what the community does with the customizations before i would choose anything...
ha I don't care even if Galaxy 2 has 2ghz triple core, I wouldn't buy Samsung phone again. I'd rather have faster update than better hardware.

That might be because the fascinate is framerate limited to ~60 fps, it won't go above 60, even if the GPU could run it faster
Battery life for me has been similar to my fascinate and it was worth switching just to be able to use data while I'm using the phone. My area won't have LTE for another year but I use a lot of data and getting an unlimited plan while verizon still offers them seemed prudent.

So im most likely going to get a tablet in june and i was wondering what i should get.
There's always the iPad and then the new galaxy tab is coming out so idk suggest.
I would have suggested the Galaxy Tab 10.1 before I found out it was Tegra 2 based. I personally wouldn't buy any Tegra 2 based tablet due to the ridiculous video playback limitation.

I'm looking to get a tablet soon too, and the 10.1 coming out soon was what I was thinking of. The xoom is nice, but screen isn't large enough. The other downside to the 10.1 that I know of is that it's only going to have the proprietary port from Samsung and not USB or anything else, yes?

Tegra 2 is incapable of playing high profile mkv files smoothly. Basically it would mean having to transcode all of my media. I refuse to do that, since even the ORIGINAL iPad can play high profile mkv files flawlessly (with XBMC), as can our Epic 4g's.

Tegra 3 is just a next gen quad core, but it almost certainly will fix the flaw. Even if they didn't, technically the quad core would be powerful enough to just use the cpu to software decode the video most likely.

Doesn't look that way since article states :
"The device is expected to be powered by either Texas Instrument's OMAP 4460 chip or an ultra low-power 28nm Krait-based Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm running at 1.2GHz or 1.5GHz."
There could be manufacturing delays with tegra 3 so they might stick with dual core. Instead of releasing with a dual core at end of 2011 they should release with a quad core in beginning of 2012.

Mind you, a transistor isn't a processor! A single modern processor includes approximately one billion transistors!
Hz also isn't everything, in the PC world, the trend for the last several years have been to improve the IPC, rather than the Hz! It's the reason that a Pentium 4 running nearly 4 GHz would be crushed by a Sandy Bridge running at <2 GHz (even ignoring the extra cores).

How exactly do we stand corrected? It doesn't seem to be contradicting anything... in either this or the quad core thread! If anything, it backs up the claim that nVidia will be first with quad core processors (none of that info in that article looks at all recent, at least a couple months old!).
Just calculate it using Moore's law, though that thinking has a different meaning as technologies mature. Googlehertz makes more sense. Derp.

From my experience, Samsungs may "feel" cheap, but they are more rugged than any HTC friends and family have had. Sure those thin metal accents look and feel nice in your hand, but I know too many people with their HTC's having chunks of their phones missing, scratches, and dings. I've dropped my phone a few times and it still looks like new with no sort of extra protection.
As I tweeted about this last night, whoever at Samsung designed the Touchwiz UI for ICS needs to be shot. Then fired. In that order. That is the WORST looking UI on an ICS device :\

Its the s3... I doubt they make a sgs2+ that's stupid. This isn't bad spec wise anyways... this sounds more realistic. 2.0ghz quadcore exynos and 2gb of ram is a little to much hype. 1.4ghz quadcore and 1gb ram sounds just about right.

You don't know what the S3 looks like yet though?...
Its in a dummy shell that's not the real physical phone only the internals.
I'm looking forward to this.

Total ram of 681mb. I agree 2gbs of ram is overkill but at least give us 1gb of USABLE space C'mon sammy!
