Has anyone else noticed that the transfer rate from your PC to the Xoom over the USB cable seems to be really slow?
Might there be a fix for this?
Coming from an iPad, its blazing fast.
I'm on a Mac though, perhaps its different since it uses software.
I just transferred 2 ~750MB video files in no time at all.

Did you also face its inability to write 2 or more files simultaneously? while you copy first movie to XOOM and try to copy another, the copy dialog will say that the device is busy... What type of filesystem is that?

Not a file system issue, but a protocol issue. This is not a mass storage device.

I wouldn't say "really slow" no, but it's also not mind-blowing quick either. It's just acceptable in my eyes.
Make sure you use the USB ports on the rear and not the fronts, the backs seem to be faster.
The way i understood it was that the internal memory was supposed to be an SSD but maybe i heard wrong.
Hi everyone,
I was using my Samsung mini usb drive on my Android Tablet (Honeycomb 3.2.1) and the drive stopped working on my pc. Every time it now I get a BSOD, but it still connects to my tablet just fine. I was using ES File explorer, transferring a movie when this problem first occurred.
So far, I have found no mention of being able to hack the tablet to support mass storage (assigning a drive letter) and I can find no other way to format. I was actually hoping I could find an app on the market, but one such as this doesn't exist.
Please help me being back the full functionality of my external drive, guys!
Btw, the external drive is now formatted to General Hierarchical, like the tablet itself.
Thanks so much!

Distrowatch.com download a Linux distro perhaps Gparted or what ever run on live disc then do what you need till android incorporated this feature
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
AFAIK these Samsung drives use an unusual block size. I have the S1 with 120gig that could not run on my Nintendo Wii. These drives can be troublesome especially on XP. There is a special tool from Samsung for formatting.
But a recent version of GParted will do also. But after formatting it will still use this special block size. There is no way to get rid of it.
BTW: Your post fits better in the Q&A section. It is not development related.

Ok dincdoes.me and se_ebel_portolkyz, thanks for the replies.
I thought of posting this in Q&A, but I thought it was more technical in nature than "how do you do this?" or "how do you hack the battery icon?" or whatever is usually in that section.
It's funny se_ebel_portolkyz, I have a Wii as well, and my drive is the S1 mini, 250GB and it wouldn't work on the Wii. I'll try the tools you guys recommended, but the Acer shows up as an external device with no drive letter and then the Samsung shows up inside that, so I'm not sure how I'm going to get access to it to format it. :/
I'll continue to work on this problem though and again, thanks.

Have you tried cracking open the case and removing the drive and directly plugging it into your PC motherboard.
No, I haven't.
Was wondering about everyone's thoughts about this new feature. Personally I think it's crap. I can't view/read ANY files from the sd cards unless I FIRST transfer them to my mac...GAY! Why can't we just mount the SD cards like the GS2???
Can you please explain because I'm having this issue managing files from the sd

Basically, the mac tells me I have to transfer a file to the mac to view it....which sucks. With phones like the Galaxy S2, I was able to plug in and mount the sd cards and it would act like any other USB mass storage external memory drive.

It's due to the way that Ice Cream Sandwich handles the Memory. It's always live in the system. The only way to access the Memory is through MTP. There is an advantage of using such because it means that if your phone is formatted ext4 (speed increases if I am not mistaken) you can take advantage of that and still access the data. Both Windows and Linux support MTP, unfortunately Apple has not implemented such even though devices are starting to use MTP more these days.
For Further reading go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol
From reading the site, there is a 3rd party implementation, not sure how up to date it is, but you might be able to make it work.
http://www.wentnet.com/projects/xnjb/ check that out to see if you can enable MTP on your mac which would reduce the need for Android File Transfer.
Also it has been a while since I have used Mac but you might be able to use these instructions to install a Ubuntu supported MTP software on your mac through X11 (allows you to run linux software on your mac) http://www.humans-enabled.com/2011/12/how-to-fix-samsung-galaxy-nexus-mtp.html

Thanks very much. I'm looking into it now
Ok.. I am using the Android File Transfer program and I can copy individual files to/from my GS3 BUT I cannot create folders for some reason. Even with the +Folder button. The error message reads: "Could not create folder. Try reconnecting or restarting your device." (Obviously I have done both multiple times.
Any thoughts?

I can't get Android File Transfer to work with my Galaxy S3 running CM9 (or CM10, for that matter), either using MTP or using the camera setting. This is really annoying. Anyone know of a way to get it to work? I really wish that USB mounting still worked, so I wouldn't be required to use client software.
It works fine on my mac at work and I have a 5 year old macbook pro. It's not all that bad. I just use it to transfer files when I'm at work.

All I did was install the app and it popped up a window that displayed sdcard and phone. Each option displays a list of the content on that storage device.

Why can't I see the SD Card contents with a file manager app? It only shows me the internal memory contents.
Am I missing something here? It shows me that I have a 16gb SD Card in there and when I connect my phone to my macBook Air, it only shows me the SD Card contents and not the internal memory.
Something is weird here.
I'd appreciate any help.

I've noticed at times the external storage seems a bit finicky - randomly things happen like dodolom described. Plus, who decided to put designate the path /mnt/external1 ? Quite a few apps have to be redirected to that and don't find it by default.

I have a related question:
Anyone know how to view the internal SD contents when connected to a PC? Given that the M stores photos to the internal storage, I figure it would be nice to pull them off occasionally when connected to a PC. However, when I connect via USB, I see only the SD card.
Thanks.

When it's plugged in, pull the notification bar down and change the usb thing to MTP from Mass Storage (or however it's worded). That should do it.

Our tablet lacks the USB Mass Storage capability, also Note 2 lacks this also.
I have found this little gem app that works on Note 2, i hope that someone here will test this and report back.
It only works on external SD, but it is way better then MTP.

How is this better than MTP? I connect my Note and it shows up - I double click on it and it shows me a drive for the internal and external storage and you can drag file in and out of them. The only two issues are that when you copy some kinds of media, you get asked if you want to convert it - and on the Note, it runs an actual app to do the MTP. It's odd because other Android devices don't do that (even the Samsung Nexus doesn't).

If you use other OSes then Windows you will notice the difference, it does not work reliable on Linux and Mac. MTP is slow , with UMS i get something about 20MB/s read/write. Also, if you have to modify a file then that file will first be downloaded locally on your PC, modified and the reuploaded instead of modify it on the phone. This is how MTP works.
I have used the app 10 times by now, no issues at all. I also checked the sd card with scan disk on win7, no corruption !
By the way, there's a good technical reason why modern Android devices don't do USB Mass Storage.
USB Mass Storage operates on an *entire partition* and needs *exclusive* access to that partition. So the phone needs to be able to totally *un-mount* the partition (stop using it entirely) which is to be mounted as USB Mass Storage.
Older devices like my Samsung Galaxy S2 had the built-in storage separately partitioned. The downside to this, however, was that app storage was on a small, limited partition so even though the phone had 16GB, apps were limited to a 2GB (or so) partition.
New devices have all data on one partition so the app data can expand as far as it needs to into your storage space, but it means that it's no longer possible to mount it over USB Mass Storage as you can no longer get exclusive access to a partition.

You are right about internal storage, but , this app only exports the External SD Card, which is formtated as FAT32 or ExFat. The app first unmounts the card from phone, export it through USB, then with the middle button, when you are done on PC (end ejected the card), will mount it right back.
This way you could check the SD card on the PC, copy large files very fast, directly modify files, works on linux and mac !
I have tested this on N8000 and it is working perfectly

Another weakness in MTP is that if you are in a locked down environment with no admin/privileges to install devices MTP will not be detected. (You'll get the same nonsense with iOS as well)
has anyone been able to get this working with a ps3. I would like to be able to transfer things to my ps3.
So, no method exists that would allow the Note 10.1 to connect as UMS to Windows XP? and/or without the use of the inserted MicroSD?
I installed KIES but it tried to install like 3 versions of Net Framework and other garbage, so I removed it. There is no way I will use the KIES. I tried to use the driver that Kies installed along with the SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe but no luck. I can't believe this is an issue.
I'm a bit of a novice with tablets/android and have searched a long time for a solution with no luck.
It only export the external sd card through UMS, the internal one it is impossible. For me, it works on XP x64 just fine.
Has anyone tried multi mount, i use it on my galaxy s to listen to music while i am mounted to the pc, works well but i think it a bit buggy cause i can't get my external sd card to mount but i don't know if that the rom cause it worked well on the previous rom, try it out multi mount
