I haven't tried abusing the Camera Connection Kit yet to see if I can use a camera as a memory card reader.

The SD card is a motorola issue, not a google issue. This has been pointed out in many, many forums.
what about Linux connection via usb. Can anyone confirm if this has been fixed?

It's never been a problem. 3.x and higher use MTP so they can stop using FAT32 for internal storage. Linux does MTP just fine. What are you talking about?

why was this method needed? Xoom will not show up as a drive, unless you do this. Where as with the Droid X, once plugged in, it showed up as a drive. I hope this makes sense.

USB Mass Storage is the old method and it shows up as a drive. The Droid X is older than the Xoom therefore it is using USB Mass Storage.
MTP is Media Transfer Protocol and is the method used by 3.0 and higher.
How is it that you're using Linux and you don't understand this stuff?

I still dont understand why they havent added (or, in fact, have removed) the "clear all" button in notifications. If I download more than 2 files it really annoys me. (I'm OCD about unchecked notifications)

He did answer you. The xoom uses mtp which will not show up as a drive in Linux unlike older android which used mass storage. Mtp allows you to add files with out having to unmount the file system on the xoom. There are many threads on how to set mtp up. If you're new to Linux it may seem hard to do but its simple. Do a Google search for mounting xoom Ubuntu and you should find them easy.

i know just what you mean, however i quite enjoy having the (X)s to click to get rid of them. I would like to see a slide to delete in the notifications aswell

totally agree. there are lots of things i understand why they're waiting, but this? come on. i could clear all on my phone.
I just want to clear up a misconception about MTP. It is not a cross platform solution for transferring files.
My post from another thread on the subject:
I can mount my Xoom in linux using libmtp and mtpfs, however, it's slow, kludgy, and generally feels like it will flake out at any moment. Additionally, even when it's mounted, I can't seem to copy music across properly; it doesn't keep the folder structure. In fact, the directories are created and any non audio files are copied across fine, but every mp3/audio file is flatly dropped into the Music directory.
I tried to copy some music onto it from my fiancee's windows xp laptop and it worked ok (though the album art didn't appear).
The move away from mass storage to MTP is a massive disappointment for me. Mass storage has always been a big selling point for me when purchasing a device and for Google to switch to using a Windows specific protocol and consider it cross platform is a big letdown. MTP on mac requires a special app and on linux, support is dire, certainly for anything more complex than simply pulling images from a camera.

New update for drag racing is really choppy, lile playing angry birds on a g1.... but samauri II and the other thd games run smooth...dont kmow if its 3.1 kernel cuz it plays fine on my mytouch4g

Change all the extension names in the song file name to .mp and it will allow the transfer
Then use something of your liking, I use astro file manager, and just add the 3 on the a tail end of the extension.
Its a b, but you can at least get a couple good songs on there.

You're right, it's a cross-platform solution for transferring MEDIA, being the Media Transfer Protocol.
It's smart enough to detect the media files that it supports and put them in the right place. I prefer it over the old way, I hated having to unmount the sdcard every single time.
A poorly made Linux MTP library doesn't make it not cross-platform. It's an open standard for transferring media to USB devices.
It's not perfect, but it's great for a device like the Xoom where unmounting the internal memory is not desirable.
Honestly users get really confused by all of the extra directories when mounting an android sd-card anyways.

Actually, it has been a big debate on rather it is Google's or Moto's issue, but I am sure that we all can agree that it needs to be fixed no mater whos issue it is.
Is there a way to connect the TF101 to my computer as a mass storage device? Right now I end up with "Transformer TF101" as a portable media player in My Computer - It would be much more helpful to get the behaviour of my smartphone (just looks like another drive connected to coputer).
You know, I was wondering the same thing. I have been annoyed with having to move information to the tablet then to the meida storage device. Don't ask about my lack of an SD card reader. I had one that worked and now it appears like it doesn't.
Regardless this is is something I was hoping for. Moving information to the SD card, w/o a reader, shouldn't really be a two transfer process.
Anyone been able to resolve this issue? My Win7 laptop sees the TF like a USB drive but my WinXP desktop can't direct copy/paste with the TF.
Hi anyone sort this? My Win7 PC always sees it as a media player and never as mass storage this really cripples data transfer rates, really would like some help.
I need to test this, but maybe multi mount from the market will do the trick.

Honeycomb uses the MTP protocol rather than USB mass storage. It does this to avoid having to kludge apps2sd as they have in phone versions of Android.
To the poster with XP, XP doesn't support MTP out of the box but it is added with Windows Media Player 9+.

I'd seen mention of it being done on xoom's with rooting but didn't look into it deeply so that was the reason for wording it that way. Really sucks that wifi explorer is a faster transfer method than plugging into usb.
use wifi explorer, available in the market. you can view the contents of your SD card in the browser of your computer, upload, download, change folders etc. Saves you the hassle of using a cable as well.

Using Astro file manager, there's a Samba share plugin. Create a share on your PC and you should be able to access it
Is there a file size limit on the Tab? I'm trying to copy a 7.97GB mkv movie file to the Tab. It gets to all but 15 seconds to complete, then a timeout occurs?

How didyou get your comp to reogize the tablet? When i plugged mine in i didnt receive a prompt from the tablet to mount it.
I was very interested if this would be the case for the gtabs that came out today because my google io tab is not recognized when i plug it into my computer. I have to push everything via ADB. Anyone else have this happening?

Disable USB Debugging and that allowed me to connect it to my PC.
I thought Android internal memory is using ext4 file system, which should be more than 4gb file size limit, no?

I believe the internal memory formatted as ext4 is the system part. The internal memory reserved for the internal SD card is formatted as FAT32 hence the 4GB upper file limit size. I guess it needs to be FAT32 so that when you plugin the device to a PC, it can be read by most operating systems. If it was formatted as ext4 then this would not be the case.
Personally, I would have preferred if it was formatted as ext4. You could still copy from Windows using KiesAir as this just uses a browser interface to copy files.

Hmm i tried disabling it while the device was already connected and that didn't seem to work. Ill try again when I get home. You cant change usb settings while its not connected to anything can you?

That is why I bought the Playbook. It has NTFS storage and I have several 6-8 GB h.264 high profile HD movies in my 64 GB Playbook.
I have the Xoom and I will never buy another Tegra 2 (even if I sold my Xoom) no matter how good it looks or weigh because Tegra 2 cannot do high-profile h.254 movies. For those who like to watch movies, wait for Tegra 3.

How does that help in getting around the file size limitation of FAT32? Whether you use USB or wifi, it doesn't change the fact that FAT32 has a file size limitation.
Just use a program to split it. It's a hassle, I know.
Are you guys shore that its a limit with 4GB? If this true its sucks big time because i have order one that will replace my Xoom.
Why would it have the limit with 4GB when Xoom and other honeycomb tablets dont have the limit .
I have no problem to transferring files bigger then 4gb to my Xoom,
Know that android 2.2-2.3 have the limit but HC does not.

Got my Tab now. And it was, unfortunately, as mentioned earlier that it does not fix files larger than 4GB. The transfer gets stuck on 5-15 sec left
Iam really angry, how the hell can Samsung sell Media Tab and it does not fix +4gb files, this sucks. can not play most movies because Tegra 2, or cant store large files.
What a miss to buy Tab today, better wait for Tegra 3

Was wondering about everyone's thoughts about this new feature. Personally I think it's crap. I can't view/read ANY files from the sd cards unless I FIRST transfer them to my mac...GAY! Why can't we just mount the SD cards like the GS2???

Basically, the mac tells me I have to transfer a file to the mac to view it....which sucks. With phones like the Galaxy S2, I was able to plug in and mount the sd cards and it would act like any other USB mass storage external memory drive.
I'm not quite understanding what you mean by "mac". This issue is KILLING me. I can't even find my sd card unless I use the built I file manager

It's due to the way that Ice Cream Sandwich handles the Memory. It's always live in the system. The only way to access the Memory is through MTP. There is an advantage of using such because it means that if your phone is formatted ext4 (speed increases if I am not mistaken) you can take advantage of that and still access the data. Both Windows and Linux support MTP, unfortunately Apple has not implemented such even though devices are starting to use MTP more these days.

From reading the site, there is a 3rd party implementation, not sure how up to date it is, but you might be able to make it work.

Ok.. I am using the Android File Transfer program and I can copy individual files to/from my GS3 BUT I cannot create folders for some reason. Even with the +Folder button. The error message reads: "Could not create folder. Try reconnecting or restarting your device." (Obviously I have done both multiple times.
Any thoughts?

I can't get Android File Transfer to work with my Galaxy S3 running CM9 (or CM10, for that matter), either using MTP or using the camera setting. This is really annoying. Anyone know of a way to get it to work? I really wish that USB mounting still worked, so I wouldn't be required to use client software.
It works fine on my mac at work and I have a 5 year old macbook pro. It's not all that bad. I just use it to transfer files when I'm at work.

All I did was install the app and it popped up a window that displayed sdcard and phone. Each option displays a list of the content on that storage device.

I have a Dell PC, I need to transfer some Power Point files and some other files to the Nexus 10. How can I go about that? Please help
I've always used Dropbox for all of my file transfer needs, and it has worked fantastically :good:. Give it a shot!
You could use wufi file explorer. Install it on your n7 then access it through your dell's browser to upload & download.

Yes you can.
If your using Vista+ (and not a N or KN edition of Windows), you should just be able to plug the Nexus 10 to the computer and transfer files via MTP.
If that doesn't just "work":
- You have a N or KN edition of Windows and don't have the media pack installed
- MTP is either removed or disabled
- Old drivers from ADB are possibly interfering (uninstall them, replug device, should work)
No idea what to do on XP or any other OS though.
I would use es file explorer.

Got me worried for a moment. Now if you can use the Nexus 10 as storage, is it possible to make say a mobile the "PC" or whatever and exchange files tru USB or that is blocked by Google? I'm a bit clueless what is allowed and whatnot on Nexus devices.

Might be better to think of it the other way around, could possibly connect a phone/camera etc to a nexus 10 and use the nexus as the host to see the files on the phone/camera etc

Yeah but stock N10 doesn't allow that, no? Really strange. It's okay not to have SD slot, but why does Google block USB OTG?
I havent tried but i imagine its possible whether its stock or not i dont know sorry. You can read from usbs as stock, just install Nexus Media Importer, so cameras could maybe be used with this, phones may get a bit trickier.
look at es file explorer. a must for every android user.
it lets you see network lan shares, your dropbox, skydrive, box, gdrive etc etc - with same ease as your device's local storage.
so you can export the share from your desktop where the files are and copy them on your device from that network share.
or, on your desktop, upload the files to your favorite cloud storage and do the same. have a habit of copying important files to the cloud, just in case your desktop crashes. outside of backing then up like that, you now could access then from anywhere using your mobile devices.
encrypt important stuff.

then you can use any FTP client and send files

benefit of using this option instead of cloud services like dropbox:
say you have a 1gig file, u have to upload that 1 gig to dropbox, then download that 1 gig from the phone. this way you only send file one time
of course if you only using small files then no benefit
but if u have 50 small files in one folder you can send 1 folder with all the files, instead of 50 individual exports from dropbox or other could service

I just starting to get familiar with my Nexus 10 16GB tablet. I have an Android phone and a Kindle fire so I've had some experience with transferring files to my devices. When I plug my N10 into my Win7 PC, it shows as a "Portable Device", not a Hard Drive so went I attempt to eject it, that device doesn't show up as a choice to eject. I have no other choice but to 'pull the plug',something I'd uncomfortable with.
Nevertheless, I can double-click into the 'internal storage' and see some of the folders. When I attempt to create a new folder (to attempt some organization), I can create a 'New Folder', but I can't rename it to anything. This is very different from my experience with my Android phone and Kindle Fire.
Anyone got any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong?
