File Size Limit? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

Is there a file size limit on the Tab? I'm trying to copy a 7.97GB mkv movie file to the Tab. It gets to all but 15 seconds to complete, then a timeout occurs?
Thanks!

Same as usual, file size limit is 4GB.

Thanks for the reply.
Why the limit? Anyway to override it? How are we supposed to enjoy HD movies with such a low size limit?

How didyou get your comp to reogize the tablet? When i plugged mine in i didnt receive a prompt from the tablet to mount it.

I was very interested if this would be the case for the gtabs that came out today because my google io tab is not recognized when i plug it into my computer. I have to push everything via ADB. Anyone else have this happening?

Disable USB Debugging and that allowed me to connect it to my PC.

I thought Android internal memory is using ext4 file system, which should be more than 4gb file size limit, no?

I believe the internal memory formatted as ext4 is the system part. The internal memory reserved for the internal SD card is formatted as FAT32 hence the 4GB upper file limit size. I guess it needs to be FAT32 so that when you plugin the device to a PC, it can be read by most operating systems. If it was formatted as ext4 then this would not be the case.
Personally, I would have preferred if it was formatted as ext4. You could still copy from Windows using KiesAir as this just uses a browser interface to copy files.

is it possible to run the following command from the shell?: df -hT

That is why I bought the Playbook. It has NTFS storage and I have several 6-8 GB h.264 high profile HD movies in my 64 GB Playbook.
I have the Xoom and I will never buy another Tegra 2 (even if I sold my Xoom) no matter how good it looks or weigh because Tegra 2 cannot do high-profile h.254 movies. For those who like to watch movies, wait for Tegra 3.

Wow this blows!! Can we transfer via network?

How does that help in getting around the file size limitation of FAT32? Whether you use USB or wifi, it doesn't change the fact that FAT32 has a file size limitation.

Just use a program to split it. It's a hassle, I know.

Are you guys shore that its a limit with 4GB? If this true its sucks big time because i have order one that will replace my Xoom.
Why would it have the limit with 4GB when Xoom and other honeycomb tablets dont have the limit .
I have no problem to transferring files bigger then 4gb to my Xoom,
Know that android 2.2-2.3 have the limit but HC does not.

Got my Tab now. And it was, unfortunately, as mentioned earlier that it does not fix files larger than 4GB. The transfer gets stuck on 5-15 sec left
Iam really angry, how the hell can Samsung sell Media Tab and it does not fix +4gb files, this sucks. can not play most movies because Tegra 2, or cant store large files.
What a miss to buy Tab today, better wait for Tegra 3
Will be difficult now, if i are going to keep my Xoom that can handle large files or not

it is ext4 as supercurio had explained in another thread. it's why we have to mount using MTP instead of as an external drive. so why there's a limit is puzzling. could be in the samsung drivers.

[Q] Am I doing it wrong?

So I thought I was going to see how a 720p movie looked like on the Epic, although I'm sure it would look amazing, something is holding me back.
When I try to transfer the file over to what I am assuming is SD card space by default I'll get, an insufficient space error. So basically, I checked in amazement to see if I had filled up my SD card; only to realize I had 13.2GB free space out of what appears to be 14.7gb.
Anyone know if I'm doing it wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Missing a few key pieces of info. How are you transfering and how big is the file?
If the file is larger than 4 gigs, it won't copy because the card is formatted in fat16 or fat32. It is subject to that filesystem's limitations.

I never realized there were limitations to the partition. Any suggestion on possibly changing the partition type? Will that ruin the functionality w/ the phone?
Are we limited to no higher definition video? The file I was trying to use is 4.6gb, I would assume other people have tried other high-def file types on their Epic, advice??

I've mostly just done episodes of Futurama.
cat /proc/filesystems says (abbreviated version):
ext3
ext2
vfat
You could probably format the SD card with ext2 file system. Then it'd work on the phone. Or you can use any linux boot cd, though the driver will help for copying.
http://www.fs-driver.org/ - this will let you read it in windows
You still have no way of formatting it though. You'll need a linux boot cd for that (or linux box).
The 4gb limit is a limit of FAT in general. Stupid Microsoft.
I take my personal, owned copy of the DVD and run it through DVD Shrink. I then take the Video_TS folder and run it through Handbrake.
It ends up about 1.5GB and is in HD.

Xoom storage, why MTP instead of USB file system, true APP2SD (from Google developer)

If you are still wondering:
- What is the breakdown of that 32GB Xoom internal memory (how many parition, how much space for apps / files)?
- Why Google is using MTP instead of USB file transfer on Honeycomb?
Here is straight answer from Google developer:
MTP is a big improvement over USB mass storage — for devices with lots of internal memory, a manufacturer no longer needs to come up with some hard partition between the USB mass storage and internal storage. Instead, they are all in one partition, with MTP providing access to the directory of media files that would normally be available through USB mass storage. This means there is no longer a need for apps on SD card for such devices, because what used to be the “internal SD card” is in the same partition as where applications are stored. The storage on your device can be used for either applications or media, depending on what you want to put on it. You aren’t stuck with how much space the manufacturer decided to leave for the two areas.
Oh also this means that the media storage doesn’t need to be unmounted from Android when it is being access through the PC.

Finally, true APP2SD You now have 32GB to put all your apps!!!
Sounds like a good thing!
This is a great explanation. Thanks for posting.
There is no doubt that mtp has advantages over mass storage. On the other hand I miss the ability to attach it to any computer and access files. It is not a huge problem but does add a limitation that was not there before.
That saod it is nice being able to access files on my computer without losing access to the partition on the device.

I'm sure future versions of CWM will be set to ignore that one folder.. I hope. Otherwise nandroid backups will take forever.
I'm not sure in terms of security it is a huge improvement; unless there is an option to turn it on/off somewhere.
Previously I would have to plug an Android device in to my computer, turn the device on, enter my unlock code, and then specifically allow the computer access via the USB. This morning I just plugged my xoom in and, poof, access to all my stuff.
At least before someone had to take my sdcard out at put it in their computer manually
Does MTP have anything to do with file size limit? I've seen posted on this forum that you can't load video files larger than 4gb onto the Xoom because of FAT32, is that still the case?
This MTP also seems to hide a lot of file from being seen by a pc. I open folders with File manager on the Xoom and see more folders namely the android folder which has game save data and other odd ball files. When hooked to a pc its blank. With MTP it seems all your allowed to do is transfer music, video and pics.

Still haven't got around to testing (so many things to try out!), but in some of the video threads, I've been told XOOM uses EXT4 format not FAT32, and thus, should not have that 4GB limit. I've been re-encoding video files to meet XOOM's current playback limitations, and have been reducing them to sub 4GB anyway, so I haven't tested that for myself.

[Q] Slow Transfer Rate?

Has anyone else noticed that the transfer rate from your PC to the Xoom over the USB cable seems to be really slow?
Might there be a fix for this?
Coming from an iPad, its blazing fast.
I'm on a Mac though, perhaps its different since it uses software.
I just transferred 2 ~750MB video files in no time at all.

Did you also face its inability to write 2 or more files simultaneously? while you copy first movie to XOOM and try to copy another, the copy dialog will say that the device is busy... What type of filesystem is that?

Not a file system issue, but a protocol issue. This is not a mass storage device.

I wouldn't say "really slow" no, but it's also not mind-blowing quick either. It's just acceptable in my eyes.
Make sure you use the USB ports on the rear and not the fronts, the backs seem to be faster.
The way i understood it was that the internal memory was supposed to be an SSD but maybe i heard wrong.

It's due to the way that Ice Cream Sandwich handles the Memory. It's always live in the system. The only way to access the Memory is through MTP. There is an advantage of using such because it means that if your phone is formatted ext4 (speed increases if I am not mistaken) you can take advantage of that and still access the data. Both Windows and Linux support MTP, unfortunately Apple has not implemented such even though devices are starting to use MTP more these days.
For Further reading go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol
From reading the site, there is a 3rd party implementation, not sure how up to date it is, but you might be able to make it work.
http://www.wentnet.com/projects/xnjb/ check that out to see if you can enable MTP on your mac which would reduce the need for Android File Transfer.
Also it has been a while since I have used Mac but you might be able to use these instructions to install a Ubuntu supported MTP software on your mac through X11 (allows you to run linux software on your mac) http://www.humans-enabled.com/2011/12/how-to-fix-samsung-galaxy-nexus-mtp.html

Ok.. I am using the Android File Transfer program and I can copy individual files to/from my GS3 BUT I cannot create folders for some reason. Even with the +Folder button. The error message reads: "Could not create folder. Try reconnecting or restarting your device." (Obviously I have done both multiple times.

I can't get Android File Transfer to work with my Galaxy S3 running CM9 (or CM10, for that matter), either using MTP or using the camera setting. This is really annoying. Anyone know of a way to get it to work? I really wish that USB mounting still worked, so I wouldn't be required to use client software.

USB Mass Storage (SGS3 Easy UMS)

Our tablet lacks the USB Mass Storage capability, also Note 2 lacks this also.

How is this better than MTP? I connect my Note and it shows up - I double click on it and it shows me a drive for the internal and external storage and you can drag file in and out of them. The only two issues are that when you copy some kinds of media, you get asked if you want to convert it - and on the Note, it runs an actual app to do the MTP. It's odd because other Android devices don't do that (even the Samsung Nexus doesn't).

If you use other OSes then Windows you will notice the difference, it does not work reliable on Linux and Mac. MTP is slow , with UMS i get something about 20MB/s read/write. Also, if you have to modify a file then that file will first be downloaded locally on your PC, modified and the reuploaded instead of modify it on the phone. This is how MTP works.
I have used the app 10 times by now, no issues at all. I also checked the sd card with scan disk on win7, no corruption !
By the way, there's a good technical reason why modern Android devices don't do USB Mass Storage.
USB Mass Storage operates on an *entire partition* and needs *exclusive* access to that partition. So the phone needs to be able to totally *un-mount* the partition (stop using it entirely) which is to be mounted as USB Mass Storage.
Older devices like my Samsung Galaxy S2 had the built-in storage separately partitioned. The downside to this, however, was that app storage was on a small, limited partition so even though the phone had 16GB, apps were limited to a 2GB (or so) partition.
New devices have all data on one partition so the app data can expand as far as it needs to into your storage space, but it means that it's no longer possible to mount it over USB Mass Storage as you can no longer get exclusive access to a partition.

You are right about internal storage, but , this app only exports the External SD Card, which is formtated as FAT32 or ExFat. The app first unmounts the card from phone, export it through USB, then with the middle button, when you are done on PC (end ejected the card), will mount it right back.
This way you could check the SD card on the PC, copy large files very fast, directly modify files, works on linux and mac !
I have tested this on N8000 and it is working perfectly

Another weakness in MTP is that if you are in a locked down environment with no admin/privileges to install devices MTP will not be detected. (You'll get the same nonsense with iOS as well)
has anyone been able to get this working with a ps3. I would like to be able to transfer things to my ps3.
So, no method exists that would allow the Note 10.1 to connect as UMS to Windows XP? and/or without the use of the inserted MicroSD?
I installed KIES but it tried to install like 3 versions of Net Framework and other garbage, so I removed it. There is no way I will use the KIES. I tried to use the driver that Kies installed along with the SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe but no luck. I can't believe this is an issue.
I'm a bit of a novice with tablets/android and have searched a long time for a solution with no luck.
It only export the external sd card through UMS, the internal one it is impossible. For me, it works on XP x64 just fine.
Has anyone tried multi mount, i use it on my galaxy s to listen to music while i am mounted to the pc, works well but i think it a bit buggy cause i can't get my external sd card to mount but i don't know if that the rom cause it worked well on the previous rom, try it out multi mount
