Odd Issue & Fix for Seemingly Dead RMA'd TF - Eee Pad Transformer General

Rather than reply to a handful of threads where this might be interesting, figured I'd just post it here/once.
I sent my TF into Asus for RMA repair, the power and volume buttons had lost their "springy-ness" and had to be pushed in hard/just right to get anything to happen.
It delivered to Asus on a Friday and I got it back the following Friday, pretty quick considering that time included a weekend and that it had to ship from TX to PA.
First thing I did was try out the buttons, they felt perfect! I was pretty excited, but couldn't get the TF to turn on. Ok... I figured the battery was dead so I plugged it in, nothing.
I left it plugged in over night... nothing. No combination of button pressing, holding, docking, undocking, etc.... nothing made a difference.
I called up Asus, explained the situation. It was clear the tech had nothing to offer and suggested I send it back. I was ok with doing so, but I was supposed to pay the shipping again. I explained the various ways that made no sense and eventually had to ask for a supervisor (I was very polite and calm, I've worked in the IT industry my whole life so I know how it goes).
Got the supervisor and he was also fixated on this policy that customers are responsible for shipping to them. I requested his supervisor. I was told that they'd have to call me back, so I got the relevant names and case number/etc and agreed.
I got a call back about an hour later. They person admitted they were not a supervisor, but a higher level tech who thought he could help. I was open to fixing, of course... who wants to be without their toys.
He said that the board and related connections in my TF were replaced and that the contacts for the buttons are very stiff when new (and that the device goes through very little re-testing after repair) and that things were probably in contact when they shouldn't be.
His advice was to sort of break it in... alternate between pressing and holding (gently, not with force) the power button for about 10 seconds and then releasing and pressing it continuously for about 10 seconds. He asked if it was ok if he called back in an hour to see how I was since I was still waiting for a supervisor anyway. No problem.
I was very pleasantly surprised that after following his advice for about 20 minutes (almost non stop... I got a lazy and discouraged a few times, lol) the device came on! The batter was nearly full... not sure if that was from me charging it or if it was already full.
The device seemed to work fine and from that point on, the power button worked perfectly. Quick press turning the screen off and on, longer presses initiating shutdowns/startups. I had the same positive results with the volume buttons (for clarity, they also did not work at first but after about 5 minutes each, they began working too).
So anyway... hopefully that is helpful to someone, I was really glad to avoid sending it back again. Sorry for all of the separated "paragraphs," seemed like it'd make it more friendly to casual interest readers.

You're not mad about this at all? It's perfectly acceptable to you? That you have to **** around with the buttons for 20 minutes to get it to turn on? That doesn't make you the least bit uncomfortable about what really might be causing the issue and whether it will get worse in the future? Stiff buttons? Were they carved out of marble like the nipples on Michelangelo's "David"?

That's it, I'm done. I'm speechless. I have no idea what to say. This had better be a joke. So how exactly do they know it works after putting it together? Maybe this explains why a member just received the tablet and dock back both non-functional.
From breaking **** and making up stories about how things arrived broken, to not testing them or not even repairing things in some instances and demanding that the customer pay return shipping everytime they make a mistake, I'm ****ing done with this company. All expectations for my device are gone. I expect to receive a piece of paper that says "I.O.U.: TF101". The lousiest company I've had to deal with in ages.

Well, definitely not mad in any literal sense. It takes a lot more than that to get me mad, otherwise I'd be mad all the time. If this is the worst thing that happens to me in a day, I'm a lucky guy.
Less literally speaking, it's a little frustrating and annoying. I've been buying Asus parts for over 15 years or so and I love their products.
No question it is disappointing to hear that they don't do a lot of testing on repaired units. No question that it is frustrating to be told to pay to ship a unit that you just got back in the same or worse condition than when you sent it.
The guy was obviously being more candid with me than most would be, which I appreciated. I bought the product from a company, but then you're dealing with people from there on out. He isn't going to change the reality of the company's approach to this product, so at least he tried to help instead of reciting scripted verbage to me.
As far as down the road is concerned... I guess it's an issue that is different for everyone... before the end of the year I will have already replaced the TF and given it to someone to mess with. Same for that future device in another 6-10 months. So for my own personal situation, I tend not to think too much about the future of the device.
All of that said, my TF really is working very well now and it performs wonderfully. It's a lot of fun to mess with and is lighter to carry around than whatever book I might be reading at any given time.

Apparently not, if the button is sort of pressed in without actually being pressed in. I suppose you could put the TF on it's side, press the button in then while holding it in plug it in with the other hand and see if it powers on. I didn't really think/care to give it a whirl.

This sounds like they do this on purpose so the device doesnt turn on until it is ready to ship. I assume many hands will touch a TF in the manufacturing stage and its probably set up to turn on after 30 presses. This way the TF doesnt keep turning on and have to be turned off. Probably before they box it for good a worker presses the buttons 30 times each until it turns on they shuts it down and boxes it to ship to stores.

Hrm... interesting thought. I've never heard of such a process anywhere, but stranger procedures have certainly existed.

How many people have problems with the back button

This is the only thing stopping me from getting this phone.. I'm trying to determine how wide spread the issue is. I figured a poll was the best way to see how wide spread the issue was, and whether its worth it to shop around to try and find a working phone
Mine seems to work fine Its not as sensitive as say my girlfriends Incredible buttons, the ones on the Epic seem to work more like physical buttons but they aren't. You have to use a little force for it to recognize and I actually prefer that because I always found myself coincidently hitting the buttons on my girlfriends Incredible when i didn't mean to/meant to press another button
It is really a non issue for me. Haven't noticed it.
I think if you used one of the defective phones, it would have been obvious.. All the other buttons worked without issue. The back button on the one I tried wouldn't register no matter how hard or how long you pressed it - some times. Some times it would register for a light little hit, other times I'd be pressing down pretty hard and nothing. By the second or third time, you'd feel the feedback buzz (which was pretty cool), and it would actually work..
It was sort of funny, the rep who was trying to sell me the phone started off to try and down play it and say "I'd just have to get used to it"... until I gave it to him. In the end, he agreed there was something wrong.
I didn't want to make the guy try other phones because I was planning on purchasing the phone from my business' phone retailer... It would have been sort of wrong to make the guy go through 3 phones and just leave if I found one that worked..
Not sure if it matters, but what state are you guys in? I'd imagine that similar batches ship to the same region.. I'm in LI, NY
Absolutely never had a problem with the backbutton.
All 4 of my capacative buttons work with light taps AND full presses.
Its hard to tell wherethe buttons are when the lights time out, and you have to hit the button in the right spot for it to register. My nexus was the same with its capacatives.

While I don't think there is an issue with the buttons persay. I was doing some testing and seems there might be some "lag" I was having this issue more with the home button at times. One time after i knew i clicked it i let is sit. took a few seconds but continued to do its thing... So maybe its the same with the back button as well. Next time after you click it once let is sit and see if it proceeds.. that way we know its a lag issue vs button issue. A lag issue would be easier to fix I would think.

Secondly,
I had a defective Epic 4G. The back button was the worst of the bunch. I would have to hit it 10-15 times to get it to work. But it wasn't the only faulty button. All of the capactive buttons seemed to falter just about anytime I went to use them.
I went to Sprint the next day and explained the problem and she said I was the first to bring it to their attention. But long story short, she exchanged it and the buttoms work perfectly. There aren't as sensitive as say the EVO or Incredible but they work as intended and the phone I once thought was hopeless and I hated, is now a phone I'm contemplating keeping.
So there are definitely defective devices out there but it is as simple as going in and getting a replacement.

I picked my Epic on launch day and all was well..my brother on the other hand just got one this afternoon and after we got it activated i hvae noticed his has this same problem.

I didn't notice any lag... Again, I think if you have a defective phone, it would be obvious. A press just didn't register, even if you'd wait..
Yeah, there isn't a lag. It just straight up does not register any contact. You have a defective phone. I took mine back and got a new one and it works EXACTLY like it should. Night and Day!
Buttons work great.
I bought the cheap screen protecter at RS and had it put on in store, my button presses were instant. When I got home and decided I didn't like or really need the screen protector, I took it off and then my button presses didn't register as smoothly may be a quick fix for some that want to use a screen protector.

Aww from the nexus forum?? That was such a fun time! The nexus is truly a phone meant to be rooted. kinda miss that thing but the keyboard on the epic is too good.
But yes, there will always be phones that are defective and need to be replaced.
yeah i noticed some lag on mine. i also tripped out when then home and menu buttons were switched (compared to the evo) and kept pressing the wrong buttons.
its looking like a 50/50 so far on getting a phone without tis problem :-\

That logic doesn't work.
1. Most people that don't have the problem won't vote.
2. Remove the people on the last option and it's 70/30 (at the time I write this).
You might be right with #1 (I don't know), but as for #2 it is 15-14 for people who are and aren't having some sort of problem with the back button (or other buttons)..
I do agree that this is far from scientific, as people who have never used the phone are likely to be voting..

Yep. I think you might just skip over this thread all together unless you've had the issue. Personally, I got one phone with the issue, exchanged it, and got another with the same problem - although not as bad as the first. However, I haven't returned the second one yet and the problem seems to have gone away. I'm not sure exactly how these buttons are engineered, but I'm wondering if more people with this problem will simply see it go away. FYI: the first phone I had was getting better but it started out as more of a 70% fail/only work with hard mashing.
My back button has a mind of its own :-( it presses itself when it wants to. Very annoying.

My first phone didn't have a working 4g radio. The second had this problem and it is very annoying if your used to a working button I returned it to radio shack. My third phone is perfect in every way.(hardware wise) this was all in the first week of the phone release. I would deffinetly go back and return it.

[DEBATE NEEDED] Broken Nexus One Power Button

Hey all.
As you all know, the N1 has a design defect that eventually causes the power button to break down after prolonged use. It's a design issue related to wear and tear. No avoiding this one. Just how long.
Mine got lucky, lasted slightly more than a year. Couple of days back, it eventually caved in.
So now, I'm considering a few options and I'd like to get some feedback from anyone.
If you were in my shoes:
1) Would you repair?
Cost being approximately $100-120 USD. With the phone almost certain to be scratched as part of the repair process. And with that, being certain that the battery button will someday eventually break down again due to the design defect.
2) Get a new phone NOW?
Cost being approximately $575-600 USD. Probably get either a MT4G or Desire HD/ACE.
Pros being = better screen type for multitouch, more ram, more internal hd, bigger screen, better cpu, better gpu.
Cons being = bad screen tech (LCD = crap colors & battery vs amoled), slow ROM updates unless you run custom (which is do, running CM, but official drivers, etc aren't out till the official stuff moves forward as well.), uber bad battery life (though this is subjective, let's say - average 8-10 hours a day), no 2nd mic for noise suppression, no trackball.
3) Wait for dual cores to come out in the next 2-3 months and get one then.
Which means buying at potentially up market costs because the tech is considered new and supply will probably be less than demand.
Would like to hear some ideas from the community. =) Thanks br0s. And uh, sis'. Lol.

Already rooted. Already on CM. I live in Malaysia. No profit due to shipping costs. Lol.
Maybe you want to try local HTC support? Check the cost for the repair 1st before deciding.
I think repair.. u can trade in low yat plaza .. n1 is still rare in malaysia.. mine got n1 too.. but still lucky no power button issue..

I sent it to Vodafone Spain technical service (it was still under warranty) and got it replaced by a brand new one.
To avoid a new power button failure, I'm using No-Lock widget and Lock Screen.
I repaired mine myself last week, $40 (aprox) part from eBay, 2 hours work tops and it now works perfectly. I did make some very small scratches in the antenne cover, but I can live with that. Don't regret it in the least, now I'm ready to wait for a dual-core "Google experience" phone...
Besides, once you have the phone open you can make sure the small button inside doesn't move around (glue or small piece of paper), as others have said that that helped in not having the problem again.

There' no support for Nexus One in Malaysia. I called HTC Malaysia already. They said I'd have to send it to Singapore.

Yeah, I'm considering repairing it on my own. Do you have the process guide? I heard you have to disassemble nearly the entire thing just to replace that board. Was hoping to solder the flex cable if possible. Do share your thoughts, am very keen to hear more.

Agreed. Very true.
Everybody would love to save money obviously.
I can live with the broken power button. I believe it's only a matter of getting used to it. And I'm pretty alright with ADB and running mods on the phone. So updating, etc will still be fine. And I'm currently using the Lock Widget, with Sleep on the pull down notification bar and long press Home to sleep the phone as well. Lol.
Only concern now then would be, how to power up the phone when I'm not near a cable. Anyone got any ideas?
I would love to keep the n1 if I can figure this one out. As of this point, everything is still alright as long as I'm near a cable. But if the phone hangs when I'm not near a cable.

You certainly can live without the power button (I did for over two months) but it is a pain every time you have to power it off/on. The problem became too bothersome for me when needing to fly and when needing to swap sim cards, and not always having a pc at hand.
In any case, the replacement process does need for the entire phone to be disassembled, but the guide at ifixit was detailed enough for me. I did try to solder or otherwise fix the cable before replacing it, but it was impossible (very small, short, flexible and, in my case, it was completely severed). To see the cable you don't need to dismantle the whole phone, just the battery cover and the screws behind it.
After changing the board, I used some cable coating to make sure the button sat firmly and that cable was under as little stress as possible. Lets hope this time it lasts more than 8 months.
Can someone explain what the method is to reinforce the power button (with pictures if possible)?
Also, does this apply to the volume buttons too? On one of my refurbs, the top volume button got unresponsive and was probably dying the same way these power buttons do.

I've been "living" without a power button for more than 4 months now, using a combination of "no lock" and "lock 2.0" to turn the device on and off.
As for the reboot issue, i always have a usb cable at hand and a small portable usb/dc charger when there's no laptop around.

I don't know of there being a generally accepted way to reinforce the power button. If you search you'll find very different ideas and opinions.
I think that the problem is that the button in the board rests over a metallic support that is part of the structure of the phone. However, the button just rests there, and depending on how you press the power button on top it can move around stressing the cable in the process. After spending some time with the phone open, I think that any solution that fixes the button in its place (glue, paper, o cable coating like I used) should help in reducing cable stress and extending its life. In any case, I don't think any of these solutions are permanent and eventually the cable will break again.
As for the volumen buttons, I have not heard about problems with them as they are are much better supported and there is no movement, cable stress or anything in that part of the phone. If you are having problems with them, maybe it's just dust or something else that got into your phone?
I'm still using widgets and trackball wake (I'm in CM7, so...), just to extend the useful life of the button as much as possible.

Yeah, I've got trackball wake and lock widgets and stuff. But I can't be carrying around a usb cable and charger all the time. Lol. I have a set in my car though.

Your ribbons in the flex cable are probably fraying. That's what happened with mine. It slowly became more and more unresponsive until one point it just chucked out.

Hmm. Very interesting. I'm not keen on opening up the entire unit to fix the flex cable though. And I was at the repair shop when the guy told me the process, and I pulled back. I would go crazy if there was dust UNDER the screen. Hence why I would like to try soldering the cables first. Any idea on how to go about with that?

Yeah, but like I said, would be difficult to carry around. I hate having stuff in my pockets. If only like some sdcard-eject-reinsert or SIM card thing could work. That would be perfect. But of course I'm probably asking for too much already. Haha.

Yeah, that's a really good write up. I read that the instant my power button broke and has helped me reorientate real quick. I highly recommend the article to those who are facing the same problem.
I actually just sent my nexus one in for repair (I'm in Singapore, just bring the phone to the center). I complained about my phone was just a few days out of warranty (3 days) though I had no receipt with me. They waived the shipping fee (S$53.50 since it's an import phone). Got the phone back a week later with a quote of S$41.50 (not bad at all). The only down size is that the technician somehow didn't plug the cable in all the way. Now I have random flash light when booting up the phone and when picking up the call. Might have to open it up to secure the connection or to send it in for repair again (I have 3 moths of warranty for this part anyhow)
Hope it can help. I had the button failure as well. At the time I send the phone in, MIUI was installed and I did not get any complain about that.

I would send it in if I was in Singapore. Not sure how they'd deal with someone from Malaysia though. Repairs + travel/postage would cost quite a bomb. Though I've seen the board part costing about 30 euros. And I would be quite mad if I was returned a phone that has a random flash of light. Lol.
I thought hardware warranty and software warranty were two different issues? Besides, it's a well documented fact that the Nexus One and Desire suffer the same problem... no?
Maybe I can call in and report the phone as a Desire for repairs. LOL.

Newtron rings - a unknown problem with samsung- we need to act on this

i contacted samsung technical support concerning the newtron rings issue and ask to get an extended warranty through them instead. But i learned that this issue has never been reported to samsung. We should all contact and let samsung know about this issue just in case down the road we encounter this problem. this is actually my second tablet, the first one i got has this problem and it will be just a matter of time for you to get it too. READ THE CONVERSATION i had with samsung. my fear is that samsung will eventually ignore our situation when we get this problem.

I don't understand the anxiety. I periodically get them. However, it doesn't affect performance and I can't see them when the screen is on unless I turn it at a extreme angle.

I believe it's evidence of the apocalypse. Isn't "minor tablet defect" one of the four horsemen?
Personally, I liked the new Tron better than the original. Both are fun, though, and shouldn't be taken as literal representations of how computers work or anything. They're metaphors for the interaction of logic and emotion.
Oh, sorry. I've not seen any issue with Newton rings on my tab, but it pretty much just stays at home.

Oh, karma bit me in the ass today.
First time I've ever had the newtons rings. Left the tab out in the sun for a bit (love that I can actually read in the sun on this screen) and had the issue when i picked it up and touched the screen. They went away after a few seconds, literally as I watched, and have not come back. Now that I've experienced it though I can't really see the big deal. You really can't see it when the tab is on. Well, serves me right for making fun anyways.

Maybe its the way people handle their tabs. Sure these tabs shouldn't have issues from a bit of rough handling or the like. And what's funny to me at least, his that the people that have them and send them into samsung, to be replaced.... they get thm again shortly after the replacement is in their hands. That leads me to belive that they handle it rough. Or something....

I'm guessing it's a warm climate that does it. Like I said in mine, it happened because it was hot. The real question is whether it's really an issue. If you can't see it when it's turned on, why worry about it?
What serial number you have on your tablet?
I have the R63B (3rd batch), no probs what so ever... I was in the sun for a week while in vacation.
Maybe you shouldn't leave it in your car or whatever your doing to create such high heat or humidity... I dunno, never had an issue with mine, but then again, I don't let my tablet or laptops sit in the oven that can be a car on a hot day... Common sense tells me that it isn't a smart thing to do, but I am not an expert.
in my case the cause is heat... if you add pressure to the heat the NR will become worst and take longer time to cure.
My tab gets them when you turn the tab upside down, or if you hold the tab in a vertical position.
I never had this problem until I had the Ghost Armor installed on the back of my Tab. I guess having the tab upside down and the pressure from the install cause this to initially occur. The rings did not go away for several days and then they finally went away but they come back when I turn it upside down or on its side but then go away within 30 seconds.

Didn't mean to thank you for that post. In fact just the opposite. Maybe you're not familiar with the concept of climate. You see in some places the world is warmer than others. But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and blame your self-righteousness on your climate.
I have the same problem and it is getting bigger and bigger. I called up Samsung and they also said it isn't a known problem but they would book it in for repair. That would be great however I need it for work.
I've had my Verizon GT 10.1 4g LTE for about a month now and no ring problems here. No other problems either. I love it.

When it gets hot (in the sun) I get distortions in the screen. I once put it in the freezer for a few minutes and they went away until I left it in my car again. Now I put it under the seat.

Mine is R61B so maybe its a problem for the first batches?

This many be the last straw for me.

I noticed this after i used it for a few days, it happens RIGHT where it gets hot on the back, it sticks to something inside and then comes off, hence the click/sticky sound. This is ridiculous. Anyone else have this issue?

On the phone with HTC, they tried to turn it into something I DAMAGED on the device, i wasn't having that. They shuffled me off to the tech support and there i demanded to speak to a supervisor. Finally I got an RMA and shipping instructions. Shipping this guy back tomorrow, so so so mad and disappointed at this device.

Same issue new 32 gb white just got it hours ago. Also it is taking 10 hours to charge... really?

That definitely sounds like a defect. Thank God mine doesn't make that sound.
I bet after it gets really hot it might be melting something structural in the back. I don't have the issue, but maybe I haven't warmed it up enough.

I noticed that mine made the same noise, but it sounds like some adhesive is trying to stick, but is not strong enough. That would also explain why the sound comes when letting go instead of when pressing the device. So I pressed the back firmly. Now the sound is gone and I think the flex has become smaller too (could be placebo)

I agree with Gormsen. Sounds like double sided tape that is just not sticking. The back seem super thin and that probably all that keeps it flat in the middle. I do have the flex but no noise yet...
It must be some adhesive melting when it gets hot, which causes it to unstick.. pretty pathetic.

Or, it could be that it's thoroughly pressed upon manufacturing. Pathetic? Nah, all products have some production errors.
The good thing is that we should be able to fix this, if we pull of the back cover, apply some stronger double sided tape and the put the back cover back.
We can do some hardware modifications, am I the only one who's excited about it?
Also with the extra space (due to the flexing) we will be able to fit a bigger battery, if one is made

Not placebo. Mine was very bad to begin with. Several places on the back could be pressed in with a light finger and under the camera I had that sticky click. I did as you and literally pressed the tablet together firmly at all places. During this process there were several clicks as if the whole thing settled properly. Result. Zero flex and it now feels totally solid all around the back. I'm totally happy with it now since I have no noticeable lightbleed and everything works as expected. Good times! ?

I noticed the sound when i unboxed it. Have tried to do so. But seems like my stick is not strong enough, and the sound remains. If this is really a stick issue. Then maybe try to heat it up and push the back hard to stick properly may solve the problem. Anyway I have initiated RMA so really dont want to fix it lol. fingercrossed to get a good device.
This isn't really anything new as my Nexus 7 was the same back in 2012. I gave it a good squeeze and its still creak free to this day. I did the same with my Nexus 9 and can confirm that I don't have any creaking, although mine didn't have that much creaking to begin with anyway.

Yes the exact same thing happens here, I've not played any games or had the device become hot, just expect it was like it from the start. This is typical HTC build quality, reminds me very much of the HTC One X and it's plastic back, just all done a bit cheaply.
In the iFixIt pictures there doesn't appear to be any sticky pads in the location this is happening, so it is probably just sticking unintentionally to the smooth plastic of the stick on NFC antenna in that location. As the whole back cover seems to default to be floating away from the internal chassis by a couple of millimetres, again typical HTC lack of attention to detail, then the back is going to do this, become depressed and sometimes stick to pop out again making a noise.
I'll personally live with it, it is a bit annoying, and I'd expected better at this price point, but it doesn't affect the functionality.

Firm press between both hands is the fix. You will hear and feel it lock. There are back clips that are not seated. Mine is solid and click/creak free now.

My own experience with the dreaded "eMMC read failed"... and aftermath

First of all, hello to all Note 4 owners and my deepest sympathies to those affected by this "bug" (whatever it actually is).
I got used Note 4 in March 2016. It was trade in for my Sony Xperia and guy told me he had it for around a year. I liked this nice device. It had great display and served me very well. Excellent, even better term.
It was until December 2016 when dreaded bug appeared, and I knew nothing about it at the time. You already know it - lags, restarts, freezes, unable to turn on, going to download mode, harder and harder to start up...
How it happened is what amazes me most. I have 2 batteries, both original. I exchange them sometimes when I am on longer time without charger. This night (before it all happened) I let phone charge down to 0% because it showed false % in battery bar. It would die at 15% and not charge over 92% for example. This was factory battery and not my spare one I got later. I found out battery % is reset each time I let it charge down all the way, then after it shuts down I charge it up and it fixes the percentage bar temporarily. Anyway, as I was saying, that night (day before I experienced the bug) I wasn't in a good mood and phone died on me sometimes in the early night. I was annoyed and I started up the phone, it got to homescreen then shut off because it was empty. I did it again. This time it got to boot animation. Again. Again. How foolish of me. I did it until phone couldn't be turned on at all. Then I set it up to charge and left it overnight. Tomorrow I took it and left to work. It was peak 100%.
Around 10AM I got some messages on facebook messenger, and I wanted to check them out and reply, I took a break from working. In middle of my typing, phone simply froze. Froze, it wouldn't react to physical buttons, virtual keyboard, nothing. Screen was on non stop with frozen facebook messenger, virtual keyboard on screen and my unfinished message.
I took out battery and turned it back on. Phone was never the same since then... First "light" freezes and after second or two it "let's go" and all messages I typed appear instantly in messenger. Sometimes I press power button to wake device it wouldn't right away. It was getting harder and harder... after investigation I learned about this production "flaw" from samsung, I've read many pages about this error, many of those here on XDA (by the way community here is wonderful)...
I bought another device because Note was getting in state of unusable. I left it alone on table and it stand there for some time.
I couldn't give up it's wonderful screen, power, pretty TouchWiz... and after I've read a lot about this, I decided to buy new motherboard. I got one from ebay in late August and it arrived sometimes in middle September. 60 US dollars. I asked seller will all functions work, is IMEI blacklisted, is WI FI working, does it has good memory chip (which is culprit for bug it seems) and seller kept saying to me everything works, is tested one by one before shipping, and he said "it must work, 1 year warranty!" I smiled a bit, it's how he said it.
I ordered also some tools for disassembling phone as I wanted to do it myself. Very cheap, 7$ and there is everything there, really nice kit. It got to me before motherboard. Then it arrived. Same night I wanted to do it, I couldn't wait to use my note again. I missed it.
One friend at work which owns mobile store and repair, told me to wait until tomorrow, he will do it for cheap but I was not patient enough. I thought I can do it. After couple of youtube videos I started it... Bottom line is I didn't heat up the device to loosen the glue and I ended up breaking the screen... And couldn't attach screen to motherboard, because Samsung made it hard without removing the screen too. I went to my friend and he scolded me for not waiting few hours and eventually found me used screen for 75$ more... They are 150$ around but he took it from some friend of his own to help me because he felt sorry and he got that friend's phone, got out the screen and transplanted it to my motherboard and casing over for free. I have working Note again...
Now, I don't know what to do with it? Do I sell it? Use it? I felt free to attach some screenshots from it, to add up to collective knowledge of XDA (it was my intention with this story in the first place). Who knows... maybe some info from here might help someone, sometimes.
Phone info showed my phone (motherboard) is made in 01.2016. Brickbug check app can't identify the memory chip (shows production date as 11/1999 which is not possible for note 4). It is fast now, one screenshot proves it. Friend said he stress tested the board (whatever it means) and it seems fine. All functions work, I tested everything too. Board color looks different - shade of green is different. KNOX warranty void status 0x0.
What is opinion of fellow XDA's about this? Do I use this thing, sell it... it cost me more than it's worth, and selling it will be just extracting mere costs I invested. But I like the device... I feel like just going through with it, whatever happens this time... maybe my pain with emmc fail is over.
Maybe some other members reading this, can screenshot their brickbug check app statuses? Those which have "healthy" devices and those having emmc issues too? Maybe we can build database of good chips, and which devices may be "safe"... I will sure add my results here in attachments.
I wish everyone owning this good little device much luck and as less problems as possible...
PS Mods can move thread to some other one regarding this issue but I'd like it stays thread of it's own... but I will conform to decision of Mod team. This is wonderful and helping site, thanks goes to owners which built it and mod team keeping the order, as well as userbase for contributing to collective knowledge and "hacking" the android and devices in a good way.
