[Q] Throttled? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A few days ago T-Mobile sent me a text saying I was being throttled for the rest of the month. My data speed has gone from about 4mbps down to 50kbps. However, I checked my account and it says I've only used 375 MB this month. Any help?
EDIT: I have the unlimited data plan

If your billing cycle has kicked over you might want to cycle the phone off and back on. if you haven't cycled you need to call t-mobile. Nothing can be done on our end.

What do you mean by cycling it off and on? (sorry. im a meganoob..)

Pull the battery, put it back in and turn the phone on.

What billing plan for data do you have? You didnt mention in OP.

Nothing changes.. I guess I have to call them. Thanks!

Well unlimited in the t-mobile world means you will not be charged for going over the set limit.
Do you have 200Mb, 2Gb or 5Gb?

I got this phone last year.. but I'm pretty sure I have the 5gb plan. Another line was just added to my family and they only have the 200mb. I wonder if something happened there?

Very possible. I'd call them, like ASAFP.

Anybody else gotten their data plans upgraded by AT&T?

I two texts from AT&T telling me they upgraded my data plan "as a courtesy" as was previously reported on by Engadget. I have been swapping out my SIM card and placing it in my old K790a and changing the data plan back to the $10 per month one. However AT&T keeps changing it back a day or two later.
What I'm interested to find out is if I make the switch just before the billing cycle ends, and it sticks through to the next one, will I be charged 10 bucks or not.
you should switch to tmobile they are cheaper and they dont change your plan on you.

and yes.. they finally got my plan upgraded on me too! bastards! i had it cheap for soooooooooo very long.. i guess it's sorta fair.. but the fact that they sent me the text at 4:48 in the AM was very uncool. And prompted me to call and ***** out customer service lol
I haven't gotten "upgraded". I'm still on $15 MediaNet.

T-Mobile 5GB Data Throttle Starts Oct.16 :-(

Got TMO Nexus owners ?
Tether or hotspot your laptop all day long like me ?
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/10/t-mobile-reducing-data-cap-will-throttle-speeds-after-5gb-of-usage
Oh no! damn. This sucks.
That's fair. No extra charges.
It is unfortunate, but it was inevitable. As long as there are no extra charges, 5 GB of 3G speed seems fair. Blame everyone who abused their connections >:|
This seems fair, at least its not like 2gb and overage like those poor suckers on ATT
Sent from my awesome Nexus One using XDA App
5 GB on a mobile device is a lot to use. Are you guys streaming HD movies on your phone or somethin??
I agree seems fair. Att is going down hill fast.
FWIW I had 5 gig tehter plan on blackberry as my main internet connection for two months. I came very close but never hit 5 gigs. This was 8 hours a day at work + pleasure.
Id rather have a choice than be stuck with either.

dude 5gigs is a **** ton... if you are blowing over that every month then you prolly need to look into using wifi a bit more often...
didn't know 10Gb cap.
how slow will it be? i wanna watch streaming video on bed.
Just be glad you're not in the UK, most carriers here limit you to 500Mb now.

Oh wow, that would REALLY suck. I definitely go over that easily every month. I have never come close to 5gb though. I'm on AT&T right now with a grandfathered unlimited plan, so I'm ok (for now).
At least the TMO unlimited plan is still unlimited, just at a slower speed once the 5GB is reached. With other carriers charging for overages, I'm not sure how they (the other carriers) can get away with calling it "unlimited".
im guessing this doesnt affect tzones ($5 plan) users... since when i goto my account, even if ive been using over 2gb of data that month, it says ive used zero data... im guessing this is because everything is going through a proxy

wow i never thought of that actually...
can the proxy setting be used for other data plans to bypass this data cap? I normally use 6 to 8gb per month as the tether is my only internet access.
The 5GB limit is fair. At least they don't charge you for overages like ATT. My buddy has a 200MB plan because ATT f-ed him when he tried to grandfather his unlimited data plan from ~3 years ago. Now he makes me turn on my N1's hotspot whenever we hang out.

My jaw nearly hit the floor when I read that, and then read people complaining about it
I'm around 1.5-2GB per month right now and don't believe that I'll ever read 5GB unless I start downloading huge files all day! I believe this is the right way to treat customers compared to the "big two's" plan. Also, I'm a loyal T-Mobile customer for 7 years now.
I can live with 5GB limit...but they better never change it again to any lower
Victimized ?
Tomorrow (paintball day heheh) is the throttle day.

Tethering limit?

Is there a new tethering policy in place? I read that it was 10 GB before they trottle you but recent artickes suggests it is in fact only 5 GB? When did this happen?
Edit: Summary of this Thread:

Carrier should be doing that in the first place. A recent FCC ruling made it mandatory for ATT to warn the customer when they are about to go over the limit.
I know I will never use the 10 GB (even though the thread title is tethering limit, I actually do not tether), but having something that I used to have (paying for), ripped out of my hands just like that just doesn't feel good.
We don't have a tethering limit, you can blame those that do tether excessively for the reduction in the limit

It's been debated over many time, and I think the general census is that it is "Unlimited Access " but not "Unlimited Usage". You can access the internet when and where you want, which is the general idea.
From what I understand they don't bill you extra or turn you off, they just throttle you (slow you down) .
I saw the number as 5 gigs, kinda a reasonable number in my book. Even if you were tethering that is a big number if you just surfing and checking email. File sharing, big game downloads, and watching lots of videos would be the only way to hit that number.
Just my two cents

It is true, Ill probably never hit that 5gb (I lightly tether, probably, 5 hours a week). But I only tether because my justification is: my data plan costs more than my home internet plan ($30 vs $15) so I try to use it to its full extent. The market for mobile internet is ridiculous..
I swear, prices between data and text message plans is highway robbery. FCC should really do something (beneficial).

Yea, I hear you there, between my wifes phone and my phone we drop alot on mobile internet, and I do tether when needed, but I by no means abuse it, I use about 200 megs a month, through tmoble. I use anywhere from 5 to 60 gigs through my home internet, comcast caps you at 250 gigs a month.
Both companys are just trying to hold up the abusers, file sharing is a major issue, (if I hit anywhere over 10 gigs at home it is because of file sharing)
The abusers are the issue, when one person uses as much as 200 other users it becomes an issue.
I don't agree with it, but I can totally see why they do it. It won't affect 99.99% of user's. And the ones that it does are probably doing things they aren't supposed to.

Pulling what stuff? This has been said before, T-Mobile will allow unlimited usage for their data plan, nothing states that they will not throttle your speeds. If it stated that they didn't in the past and then changed their minds then people would have room to gripe but that isn't the case. If you do not like their service then choose another cellular provider. I think Sprint offers unlimited 4g access when you pay the extra $20 or $25 on top of the fee for the data usage.
I called them abouta year ago when I started tethering on my g1 (of course I didn't tell them that) and they assured me that there is no such limit or charges. It ready is simply unlimited

The call center reps are not qualified to make that distinction because of their lack of knowledge about the terms of agreement that you had to sign. They will tell you anything to make you happy, that is their job. This is not limited to T-Mobile of course. If you want to a definitive answer then just check your contract. It will state what restrictions there are for the data plan. I had to pull out the contract to make sure I followed the terms of agreement when I was messing with the firmware on a Clear modem they sent me so I could use it with my router and accidentally bricked the modem. I argued for 30 minutes with the rep for a new modem because she believed that messing with firmware for the modem constituted to abusive use of their devices without stating what is abusive use. She sounded pretty new to the job too.

Believe me, if most of my friends & family had AT&T, I would've jumped ship a longggg time ago (would've also been much happier & easier on the wallet with the 200mb $15 data plan).

Nothing is stopping you or your family and friends from changing providers. That is why there is a free market, don't like on service provider go to the next and so on and so forth. I am not trying to cause an argument, but the old adage, you can't have one's cake and eat it too, applies here.

They are not doing much because (which I just learned the other day) that taxes on cell phone usage (monthly plan) where I live is stunning 18%.
FCC probably want your bill to be as high as possible.
Now, this thread isn't really about tethering, I started because of the fact that T-mobile is reducing the amount from 10 GB to 5 GB. I understand the fair use policy so an artificial cap is fine with me, but don't lower the cap for everyone just because a few people are tethering to their phone, scale those who use more and charge them more.
Now, you might ask: If you never needed more bandwidth, why do you care?
There's distinction of being punished because you did something wrong yourself and there's being punished as a group because of someone else' mistake. If I can have 10 GB a month, I want to keep it at 10 GB a month irregardless of whether I used it up, it's the principle that counts: I signed up knowing there's 10 GB a month of bandwidth and it needs to stay that way.

Well, at least your bill is tolerable. Oh and coming from the g2x, which had a throttle fix, I have only ever been throttled once, when i was on vacation and tethering like a mad man(speaking of which, that was exactly one year ago, and im going again in a week!) I am not sure about your data usage, but it is difficult to go over 5GB on a regular basis, and it would be at the end of the billing cycle anyway. If you're really worried, go for 10GB. i'm sure its still cheaper than vz unlimited.

Verizon Data Calculations not reset - Warning!

I purchased by Note 4 on the 4th of December and based upon my previous usage statistics, I chose a 2GB plan. (This is for a single line mind you). I took a trip to California for a couple of weeks and where I was, there was no Internet and no wifi, I was forced to use my 4GLTE the entire time. This required me to upgrade my data to 3GB on the fly and when I finally returned home on the 22nd, I had used 2.54GB data of 3GB.
On Jan 1 my bill cycle ended and my DATA USAGE should have been reset to 0/3GB. I left the house to run errands yesterday and while waiting for my car to get fixed, I decided that I would watch some youtube videos. I popped up the widget that verizon supplied and I seen that I was now at 2.58GB of data out of 3GB. I called Verizon 611 and the rep said that they were sure that it was reset and that I most likely left Facebook open and that ate up 2+GB of data in 2 days, seems legit! NOT. The rep then tells me that I need to disable Mobile Data if I am using Wifi because programs will still use it (Now I know this is the case with some applications and download boosters, but I do not have any of those installed). She then sent me over to technical support to see what is using up all the data.
The technical support rep answered and I was so upset that I was almost to tears. He was polite and said that he would help me figure out what happened and how to keep it from happening in the future. He did the calculations and he came back with 2.1GB at first then after checking my phones usage, it did not match up. He admitted that he miscalculated and what he was seeing was 2.1MB of usage and not 2.1GB. He opened a ticket and also switched me to the Loyalty plan, giving me 4GB of data for 2GB price, all in all I ended the call with a smile.
TLDR: Make sure your Data is getting reset each month. Double check your usage on your phone to make sure it matches Verizons usage. If not open a ticket with support and have them review/correct the miscalculation.
Hope this helps someone else.

Lol brand new phone and have to put it down when data limit reaches threshold lol I feel sorry for the people that upgraded. When you're out of town you're definitely going to use alot. That's pretty strange, indeed! For me however, my data doesn't reset until like four or five days after the bill is paid. My billing and data cycles aren't on the same period, so I would definitely check on that and see if you're in that same boat, too!
Off topic but fwiw I hate Verizon! Had to get it because of a move(I had T-Mobile) and for the few months I've had them I've had nothing but problems. Crap speeds, paying out the ass for 20 measly gigs, had to pay full price for a DE Note 4 for root and an unlocked bootloader..my last run in with them was yesterday when I was approaching my data cap and I tried to up to 30gb...they tried to say they couldn't since I had video calling on my phone..which doesn't make sense since one I don't have video calling and two what would it matter if I did?!?! I'm so sick of them its nuts. Plus the employees in the store are the dumbest known to man. I told them if I get an overage I'm not paying it since I tried multiple times to up my data and they were no help and if they hit me with the charges I'd dump them for AT&T and use a T-Mobile phone...they didn't care nor do I think they even listened. AT&T gives double the data for the same price, T-Mobile & Sprint have Unlimited data..if anyone can switch from Verizon they should..to hell with it I'm starting a petition where I live for a tally of people that would gladly switch to T-Mobile if they would put up a damn tower for LTE.lol
I still have my unlimited data as well! The bad part is Verizon took away using other lines to update and just switch it over to your unlimited line. That really pissed me off. That's a bad move and says a lot on how they feel about us with unlimited data. They want to so badly force us out of it. But not going to budge! Between me and my wife we use 14gb a month. And that's without root now so no WiFi tether. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only 1 spending $700. On a phone once a year!
