Who else is excited about Touchwiz? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

I think it looks atrocious on their phones, but..... What they are showing on the GT doesn't look bad at all. I've so much empty real estate on my homescreens anyhow due to there not being all that many widgets available anyhow and just like my phone, I like easy access to info. I've no problem giving it a try on the tab and seeing how it is. Not to mention, whatever custom apps Samsung has been working on in the meantime.
I'm not one of those people that like barebones Android anyhow. Sure, I wish skins weren't so obtrusive so they didn't slow down updates and it would be nice if we could just turn them on or off as needed (I wish it were apps tied back to their kernal or whatever).... Still... I'm excited to see what is coming.

I am. I love the mini app seem pretty usefull with that i can check calander or use calculator while still on the broswer.

i believe people are looking more toward the additions like allshare but yea it doesnt look like it will be too terrible or so we seem to hear

can you link some videos?

No desire for it at all. Samsung (and indeed all manufacturers) should provide these updates via the Android Market, not hardbaked into the firmware, so that people can choose to install them or not. Or at the very least make them optional so that you can simply switch them off in the settings.

I'm actually looking forward to it. I just hope its optimized to run smoothly.
I'm worried it going to bog down the device.

Hopefully text entry on the browser wont suck. I'm looking forward to it.

Nice...mini application tray looks cool. I also wish if they could improve browser for the current text lag.

Does anyone know if we will have to accept the update? I really kinda like stock Honeycomb

From what we've been hearing so far from Samsung, Touchwiz will continue to be optional. Hopefully they don't back track on this.
The mini app tray looks cool, but it would be about 10x cooler if there was some kind of API to allow other developers to add to it. Specifically, I'd like to have the full (scientific) calculator available while looking at technical documents at work for example - and it would be nice if I could reply to messages and Facebook chat with out having to stop what I'm doing and load up the facebook app. You could do a lot of cool things to bring the tablet experience to "the next level" so to speak, by creating something between an app and a widget (applet?) that was easily accessible no matter what you were doing.
The mini app tray is a step in the right direction, except I suspect it will be proprietary to Samsung and limited to their implementations - which will likely remain pretty basic and not much more than we've already seen. QuickDesk was sort of a similar idea on our phones, though limited to widgets and it appears that development has stopped after the creator starting charging for it. Glad I didn't buy that one!

Samsung unloaded a source code files for their GTab 10.1.
I'm sure they will unload something like an API for the mini apps tray.
They have a developer website on their webpage specifically for their products.

I look forward to any update whatsoever the keyboard when typing in browser SUCKS!

Samsung had to release the source code for the underlying OS per the licensing agreement. AFAIK they do not have to do this for their launcher or other "enhancements".

I just hope the addition of touchwiz doesn't delay our firmware updates too much.

I like stock honeycomb but sometimes I kind of find it boring. Touchwiz ads a lot more colors and on the light / bright side but I would rather have boring but smooth than cool but bogged down. Hopefully they find a perfect balance in between.

I tested a TEST version of touchwiz on tab 10.1, there was lag when using stock honeycomb keyboard, which did get better when I used the samsung keyboard. the overall user ex. did lag and slow down, I also immdiately used what appeared to be an RC or Final of the TouchWiz (more inclined to RC) was quite smooth - the lags were almost not present, but still not down to stock honeycomb speed !

I hope that they fix the kb lag in the browser.

I'm looking forward to it. My home screen is too empty..

Xoom slow and buggy

Does anyone else feel like the software was rushed? It just feels so slow and unoptomized? Really glitch and stuff. Especially when scrolling. Do y'all think this will be solved soon with an update or what??

Can you be more specific on what is slow? Yes, I do feel it was rushed with missing features and stuff but I do not think it is slow. The only slowness I have noticed is when on XDA in the browser and typing a response. Other forums/sites seem to work fine. Not sure if you are talking about the browser, some sites, all sites, all apps, etc.
Yeah I feel they shouldn't have removed the beta sign off the Operating System yet. I've had little crashes in the browser and in the camera here and there. Since we are all Android geeks we are accustomed to it. But newcomers that pay $800 for a device would get very frustrated. Just gotta wait for those OTA's.
The one I played with at Best Buy the other day seemed laggy on the home screens, but when I got into an app, everything was so fast and smooth.
I have to give Google the benefit of the doubt here. At this point, I see the XOOM primarily as a platform for developers to get their apps tuned for tablets before the Honeycomb Tablet rush begins. I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot of Honeycomb ready apps show up over the next few weeks. Also, I would hope Google has an update ready at least some time in March in anticipation of those other tablets that will launch later next month and in April. Having the XOOM out is a perfect way for Google to find bugs that are present in the system. They can do all the internal tests they want, but someone in the real world is always going to find something they missed. Granted, I'm sure they know about the lag and choppiness in the browser, but considering the XOOM was actually being manufactured before the Super Bowl, this version of Honeycomb is at least that old. I hope they're well on their way to an update by now.
Just give it some time.
[edit]
Case in point.
Yea it seems just laggy and choppy. Like the app draw and stuff. Its just annoying lol. Hopefully the updte fixes it

I'll have to agree with almost everyone here about the state of the software.
Though I don't have a Xoom as of yet (its on order), I have had the chance to spend a lot of time with one at work. The biggest gripe I have with it is the fact that it's packed to the brim with amazing technology yet does not perform like it is. I have been able to do what I want with it with no difficulty, but the sad thing to me is I don't feel like I'm holding a Tegra 2 powered device. It's like having a V8 engine in a sports car but only using 4 cylinders, it gets you where you want to go, but its not as fun.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the thing, and I am replacing my iPad with it. We just have to be patient, and confident that Google will come through. Besides, they always do.
it is choppy and laggy and still needs a lot of work. When I compare it to my inspire it is very clear that it needs work. I still love it and wouldn't trade it for anything.
It is a more of question of when rather than if it will be updated. They made the right choice getting this thing to market, you have it in hand and it's real. It might be buggy, but it has it's moments of being impressive.
Dont worry guys. Wait till we can deodex, have custom recovery from Koush, and start work on kernel development. Then we will see what this baby can really do.

"Google" pissing anyone else off?

OK so... first we go to Gingerbread - I noticed the Green icons as the most changed, hardware acceleration and a few more tweaks and what not....
Now this morning I woke up ready to go to football practice, im taking a ****.. and i go on engadget and i see this:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/11/android-ice-cream-sandwich-pictures-leak-leave-us-cold/
I just go WHAT THE ****?
I understand its a alpha release, but the UI will probably not change from whats shown in that article anyways...
Can't someone come up with a better looking UI? I'm really starting to get pissed off, and I can't find out who to blame.. I'm guessing its Google because they make the OS and the default UI is that color...
Green to Blue
thats it? Thats the big new ICS?
*NOTE im not talking about all the other changes, i know there will be minor/major new things, but i'm trying to focus this on UI more than other things...
Are people just not creative anymore?
This is an alpha release!!!
It is the pure Android UI. The companys like Samsung, HTC,...... will make there own changes like Sense (HTC), Touchwiz (Samsung) and this will change the look of ICS.
There are hundrets of different launchers and themes in the market so you can make your own style. And if this is not enough there is still UOT kitchen where you can change everything you like to.
And what about custom roms? Devs are working hard for us to get something new every week.
Its a little bit early talk bad about something that is not available yet for normal customers like us.
So what do you whant? Do it better if you can. But i am sure you can not!
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
What's the big deal? It's gonna change after official release not to mention the OEMs will put their custom UIs over it anyways. You can use 3rd party launchers or a custom rom. If none of that fits your needs then just get yourself an iPhone.
Since u r more creative than them why don't you just make ur own UI
lulz^ im sure there will be huge improvements in icecream sandwich.
To be ohnest if that's what ics will look like I don't think I'm that excited about it. I mean Ill love all the improvements and tweaks in it but I just don't really like the launcher.

Android is a platform that makes anything you want to change possible...you don't like blue find a red theme... don't like red find a green theme... don't like anything out there.. find a instructional thread and make it your own... Don't like your processors speed... overclock it... Google (android) is awesome for that reason and I don't really care too much about official updates except that with each one it gives our devs something new to work with. If you don't take advantage of the open source community maybe an iphone is a better device for you. And I don't mean that in a condesending way. They look and run fine out of the box.. but it will never run better than the way you get it. I love my android... I flash rom after rom and theme after theme until my phone looks and runs exactly how I want it to.

I'm not waiting for ICS ... I'm waiting for the custom roms to be ICS based
=]
Anything from the factory will have bloat and other limits for sure.
Wait for a custom rom and call it a day.
Vibrant+MIUI
And I thought it was supposed to look like honeycomb?
Who the hell cares what it looks like? If you're on this site it's because you want MORE! MORE CHOICES! MORE ROMS! MORE THEMES! MORE CUSTOMIZATION! Everybody on this site will just change ICS to look like what they want it to anyway...

I'm for changes, especially in UI. But how many other major mobile OS change from version to version? Not even iOS has changed much since it's initial launch to the latest firmware. The biggest advantage with Android is the possibilities are endless when it comes to customizing the UI the way you like it.
can't wait for a newer version personally!
Am I the only one that looked at those pictures and thought FAKE?
Sorry but it looks like TW type launcher with a CM7 type color scheme, not much else, we all know you can make it say whatever version of Android you want it to have, and some are claiming that the kernel is just a GB kernel, not a newer one
Google is an engineer driven company, not design.

I agree, I thought the same thing. I heard ics was going to have it's own theming engine which would render manufacturer's theming useless and unnecessary. The whole point was to make it easier to push the updates and save the manufacturers time. Just my two cents.

Wave Launcher currently allows widgets to be popped up over the current app. Obviously it gets in the way, and there is not really enough room on the Note. This approach does seem great for tablets, but for the Note? I need every pixel to see what I am using, having tired old eyes.
To be honest I always assumed a tablet could be used a bit like that. I'll find out when my FlyTouch5 arrives, I guess!
When is the release date?

Since your note has a high resolution it won't eat up too much screen space.

Hi Kangal. Too me, it makes a good compromise between a desktop environment and android's current state. I also like how it partitions the screen. Anyways they have gone open source and are providing a ROM for Motorola Xoom and source code for developers to incorporate into other devices and improve. This is a good thing!

In the entire rant above you never once mentioned anything specific that: 1) you want to do, 2) you can't do. I use mine for streaming video from Plex and PlayOn (Hulu Plus, HBO GO) over Wi-Fi and 3G, download and watch HD movies from Google Play, read books and magazines, catch up on the news through dedicated apps and the browser, control my Google TV's with the remote app, use it navigate all over the world with CoPilot, etc., etc. That doesn't seem boring to me. Of course a newer tablet with a Teg3 processor is going to be faster. But for doing what I described above the G-Tab is more than capable. And when the ICS update is released in a couple of weeks it'll get a lot smoother too. Look at it this way, with all the tablets in the world for Apple to try and get banned they picked the G-Tab. Kind of flattering actually.

It's not exactly about what it can and can't do, it's how it does it. Biggest problem I'm having with this is lag, the lag is ridiculous, and it's pretty funny because a lag free experience was what nVidia boasted about at the debut of Tegra 2.

Running CM9 right now (I LOVE Aokp on my Sensation, myTouch, Galaxy Nexus but AOKP is a bit odd on the tab, and crashy). Some apps are smooth, some are laggy as ****. egl drivers on this really suck though, it could be a lot better. Gonna wait and see how good (or how bad) ICS runs with Samsung's official drivers. If it's still awful then I'm just gonna get rid of this crap and go for a Nexus 7. ASUS actually does **** right and gets it right. That's why Google made them the official Nexus 7 manufacturer, and that's one of Google's best choices ever.
I wouldn't pay 400 for the GT today. A year ago, it was well worth it. If your problem is with apps, get the the iPad. If it's speed, get the Transformer Infinity or the Nexus 7. Simple.

I have no problem with apps at all, Google Play is amazing annd has a great selection of apps. But this tablet can't run most apps without lag, and it's ridiculous. iOS is an extremely boring and disappointing OS so any of those iCrap devices can go dig a hole and die in it. I want the Transformer Pad Infinity, but with $500+ vs $199 (and tax, shipping), with the only significant different being screen resolution... The Nexus 7 is hard to pass up. Sadly my laptop is ****ting out so I might have to pass up on the Nexus 7 for now and get a new laptop, but God damn.... You really have no idea how much I want that Nexus 7.
I'm still running HC 3.2 cause I want the camera but task650 has done a great job. I don't see any lag but some apps don't work which is a bummer, but I still don't think its a waste.
Lag has always been an issue but I've always just lived with it hoping for ICS to come out and save the day. Still waiting (have the verizon tablet and paying for mobile data so no, CM9 is not in the cards for me). Now having a One X in hand for my phone makes the GT feel even more long in the tooth but until there's another android based LTE tablet out there to jump to with better performance I'll stick it out with what I've got.
Depending on when you bought this, yes. I got this the first day it came out and for what it was, it was awesome. It was one of the first Android tabs and I've watched Android's tablet ecosystem grow. If you've passed this recently, there are way better options. I myself got a nexus 7, but there are lots of praise for the Asus infinity and people with their prime are generally happy with it. Good luck and see if you can get an exchange as the Samsung tab definitely isn't worth 400 anymore
My life for Aiur
Its definitely not the fastest thing these days but I use it non stop and it runs games, music, movies, etc. just fine for me so I have no complaints. Official ICS would be cool though.

Hey I am an Android user since G1 too and I am looking from the same perspective.
Here is what I am going to do with this crappy Tab:
I am not going to trash it but I will keep it and hate it.
This will help me remember not to get any heavily customized interface (Touchwiz, sense ... etc) device in the future and waiting 1 year for an update then getting dropped in the second update because my device cannot handle it because of the customization.
Moral: Keep it simple and light.
Can not say install CM instead, as it is not an valid alternative. Don't take me wrong but my level of reliability I am looking for is just higher than that.

True, GalaxyTask ROMs are actually the best ROMs here, which I find disappointing because ICS is a lot lighter than Honeycomb ever was. Even so, apps still lag, and every browser I use crashes.

Now having a One X in hand for my phone makes the GT feel even more long in the tooth but until there's another android based LTE tablet out there to jump to with better performance I'll stick it out with what I've got.

I have a bad feeling ICS won't save the day either. I have an even worse feeling we'll just be getting ICS after Jellybean is released.

The Transformer Prime was slowly being released when I got this, but it was sold out and patience is non existent with me.

Nexus 7 is calling your name too
Its a shame your experience is so poor with this tab. I love the galaxy tab 10.1, running honeycomb 3.2. I luckily don't experience this lag and never have. I have the US model bought on first release a year ago and I still love it today. Use it for everything these days. Music, movies, streaming all from my WD Live hub, connect to my smart tv via HDMI or wifi direct. My mate bought the galaxy tab 2 10.1 yesterday and running them side by side the tab 2 was even smoother ics is an improvement but with touchwiz looks the same as honeycomb tbh.
Maybe you should take your tab back for a refund and do more research and see if there is something more suited to your needs.

What apps does the iPad really have that Google doesn't? Any Apple plp chime in? x

Is it just that the apps are not meant for a 10 inch screen? I just don't see why every review I read is that the apps are just awful for the Nexus. Can anyone who uses both Apple and android respond? I'm strictly android....

A great example is Facebook. Look at FB on the iPad vs an Android tab. There are a few others that I can't think of but as Android tablets gain popularity (and they are), the market will push developers to develop for the 10 inch platform.
Also, they apps on the N10 really are not that bad.

The Weather Channel and ESPN Scorecenter are great examples as well.
I don't require many apps for my tablet, but Android has horrible options when it comes to sports apps made for big screens. It is just awful. As far as weather you should try weather bug for tablets

Yea, sports apps. I forgot about them since I stopped installing them on my tablet because they were so bad
Agree with the others. The guy on The Verge hit it on the nose. Android tabs will be a bust until the app ecosystem is improved. The Facebook app is a great example of an app looking great on the iPad (even though I hate the layout) but looking/working like crap on Android. Hopefully this changes soon.
We have so many great Android developers but hardly any Android APP developers :/

Paper is major one for me.
The thing I have heard is... If you mostly use Google apps they all look amazing. This perfectly describes me, so it won't be a problem. No need for weather apps when I have a widget and no need for sports when I got Google now cards updating me.

Hasn't Facebook already been described as poor for Android on all devices, never mind tablets.
In fact I seem to remember something about Facebook doing a complete refresh of the Android version only a few months ago. I expect this is due any day.
Now they throw ads in your face, I prefer my timeline widget (AP widgets) anyway. No ads get displayed. I hardly open the Facebook app.
Besides, opening the FB website via a browser (with desktop mode enabled) gives you far more control than the app on any other platform, including ipads.

Cinemagram.
Its not the paid apps that hold it back IMO.
Most people use the same sites. Just want tablet versions of eBay amazon Expedia Facebook twitter. We get these others will follow...

Verge has no right to talk about app ecosystem when their own app is a messy ****. I don't care about reviews who scores while testing the device for just few hours. I think something seriously wrong with android app developers. They are lazy, unimaginative. Google has given very clear guidelines about app development. But most devs would just create a wonky iOS_like application. Google is too generous. They should clearly block such apps from getting to the play store. I will rather take a good 10,000 apps compared to pathetic 700,000 apps that we have now. when apps have the capability to scale properly as per the size/resolution, why don't they make proper use of it? if the app developers are lazy, they don't deserve anyone's money.
I'm curious, why don't BIG COMPANIES make tablet apps for Android? I mean we're talking about FB, Twitter etc. You'd think at least the big apps would have droid tab apps by now.

Good point. As for FB/Twitter, it's an interesting case. G+ is a competitor for both. Actually this should be even more incentive for the social networking giants to release a great app for Android platform. Obviously at certain point G+ will start gaining because of it's wonderful integration with Android. They should come up with proper native app for Android.

OK, I only know FB from looking over my gf's shoulder from time to time, but what could an app have to offer on a 10" display that would make you choose it over the web page? In my view even on my N7 online community pages (including this one) are better viewed through a browser than the dedicated app.
One exception would be fast user switching support like in the twitter app.

A couple of things come to mind: multi-touch gestures (maybe web pages can offer this, but most don't), being able to access the app without being online, and -admittedly this is just out of habit though- I simply prefer opening and app to a webpage.
iOS on iPad actually has some really nice features. The stock keyboard can be made into the split keyboard, you can close an app with a gesture (pinch with 5 fingers), switch between apps by swiping with 3 fingers (I believe) from the edge. Just feels very polished and cohesive.
I still prefer Android but iOS does do a lot of things that make it feels really nice.

It's not lazy,
If you want to pay for my time to update our apps to support the 5% or so customers on tablets, I'm sure my company would be happy for you to do that.
At the moment, any time I suggest it, it gets shot down cause my time (and their money) is better spent on the other 95% if customers.
I would love for that to change, cause I hate crappy apps on my tablets, but these apps don't write themselves and somebody has to pay for it.

Maybe there's only 5% traffic from Android over iOS BECAUSE the app sucks and not the other way around?
iOS appears more polished because it's been exactly the same since it's initial release. The "updates" they roll out offer no real value, it's all "nice to haves" like 5 finger swipe for close..... I presume apple would now sue Google if they used this in Android.........
Or they will give you a feature that you should of had since day one, I.E MMS didn't come to iOS for ages, then when it finally arrived all the Apple users all got excited..........What's wrong with emailing images? It's free....... :\
Google actually realease beneficial changes in Android updates - NFC control where hardware avaliable, USB OTG drivers, better task management etc - They improve the OS behind the scenes and try to make it faster, smarter.
I find tablet apps are improving a lot on the Play Store now - Agreed there isn't much avaliable in the ways of sports apps. The Sky Sports News Center on iOS is way better than Sky Sports News on Android . Then again this is not Android/ Google's fault. It's way easier to submit an app for Android than it is iOS so it's the developers who are bottle necking the market here. Also - Facebook for Android is being re-based and taken away from HTML 5 (Which IIRC is actually prefered for Android - must be something to do with Facebook server side). So hopfully we will see a big change soon !
On the plus side - if you have the know how,. There's nothing stopping you getting the Android SDK writing your own app and installing on your tablet. Obviously on an Apple product this is not possible without a jail break , heaven forbid if you might want to use a piece of hardware that you own to run your own software! You can do this on Android - out the box, no root required (but you already knew that )
I used to have a Iphone 3Gs and now have a HTC ONE X and a Cube U30Gt (Nexus 10 coming) I would never go back to iOS. I have a very strong, but very biased opinion on the apple vs google front so I have probably been a bit unfair to Apple here......... Then again I have used both brands on many occasions so the end user experience is there.
I just dont like the idea of having to void the warrenty to be able to use a product to it's full potential - which with apple you have to do.
I think the question here should be.....What does Android have that Apple doesn't? - I could write a list as long as my arm
